Quality + Best Value + Program Execu on = CPI’s Formula for Success
Sharing Our Latest News
December 2017 Issue 2
CPI Aero has earned a reputa on for quality cra smanship, fair prices and opera onal excellence that leads to a superior buying experience for our military and commercial customers. Customer sa sfac on, in turn, results in new opportuni es from current customers for new applica ons or contract extensions on work we are already performing. We proudly announced several such contract awards in the la er half of 2017 that fall into this category.
In July and September Sikorsky Aircra , a Lockheed Mar n company, awarded CPI Aero with two five‐year follow‐on contracts for the UH‐60M Black Hawk helicopter. These contracts were awarded to CPI following Sikorsky’s “Mul ‐Year IX” contract signed in June with the US government to manufacture 257 H‐60 Black Hawk helicopters, with op ons for an addi onal 103 aircra . CPI Aero will con nue to manufacture fuel panel assemblies for this aircra , as well as gunner window assemblies. CPI Aero has been manufacturing these products for Sikorsky since 2010.
Then in November, CPI Aero announced that Lockheed Mar n had again selected the company to manufacture addi onal assemblies for the F‐35 Lightning II aircra . CPI Aero will now manufacture drive sha assemblies for the aircra ’s canopy actua on system, more than doubling CPI Aero’s content on the F‐35. In May 2017, CPI made its first delivery of F‐35 door lock assemblies under a contract the company received in 2015.
“We are proud that current customers such as LMCO con nue to select CPI Aero for mul ple contracts as a supplier on some of their most significant programs,“ said Nazz Palmerini, CPI Aero’s Vice President, Programs. “We strive to provide the best customer service in pricing, performance, and delivery and believe that our customers recognize and reward us in return for this commitment.“
Message from Douglas McCrosson, President and CEO
The Importance of Looking Back While Planning Ahead
Here in the northeast the cold air and shortened days are some of the obvious indica ons of winter’s approach and the end of the year. At this me, I find myself reflec ng on this year’s accomplishments while
we finalize plans and goals for the upcoming year.
As I look back at 2017, I am proud of the accomplishments CPI Aero has made, and I am eager to build on them in 2018. Contracts won throughout this year con nue to reflect our business strategy to focus more of our sales efforts within the defense market, a market we know very well and in which we have historically achieved success. In addi on to contracts for some of the most‐advanced military
aircra programs, such as the F‐35 Lightning II and UH‐60 Black Hawk, we also saw con nued growth in our pod structure business with our contract with UTC Aerospace on their TacSAR reconnaissance system. Internally, capital investments and improvements made within our facility con nue to enhance produc vity and efficiency. A newly re‐built metal polishing area and a new Bonding Room were both added to the manufacturing floor this past year.
In 2018, we expect to build upon the momentum we have in the defense sector, while con nuing to execute on the important programs we have across both the defense and commercial aerospace markets. We have a series of “first deliveries” for 2018 and we’re excited to move these programs toward full produc on.
For 2018 we also are offering new benefits to deliver the highest quality of work life for our valued employees. Star ng in January, CPI Aero will move to a 9/80 work calendar which will align our business days with many of our customers while also providing our employees with every other Friday off. This new schedule as well as other ini a ves we will be rolling out in the new year reflect a company goal to maintain the quality of service we provide to our customers while improving the work/home balance for our employees .
So as one year comes to an end and another is about to begin, I’d like to extend a hear elt thank you to our customers and suppliers for the con nued collabora on and coopera on that fuels our mutual success. And on behalf of everyone here at CPI Aero, I would like to wish each and every one of you a joyous holiday season and a prosperous new year!

CPI Aero Selected by LMCO for Addi onal F‐35 Assemblies
In November, CPI Aero was awarded a mul ‐year
contract from Lockheed Mar n (LMCO) to
manufacture mul ple canopy actua on drive sha
assemblies on the F‐35 Lightning aircra . CPI will be
responsible for manufacturing and delivering four
different drive sha assemblies used within the
actua on system that opens and closes the cockpit
canopy of all three variants of the F‐35 aircra . This is
the second contract awarded to CPI Aero for this
aircra . In May CPI Aero made its first deliveries of
F‐35 door lock assemblies to LMCO, a contract that
was awarded to CPI in 2015.
CPI Aero Manufacturing Receives Advanced Composites Training
CPI Aero strives to con nuously seek out opportuni es for providing
valuable, real‐world applicable training for its employees. Recently 18
CPI Aero technicians received advanced, hands‐on technical training in
composites manufacturing ac vi es at the Composites Prototyping
Center (CPC), an R&D/Technology incubator for all things composites
located in Plainview, NY. The training was funded via Empire State
Development and comprised 60‐hours of training over 10 days. Upon
comple on, CPI’s technicians received an accredited na onally
recognized cer ficate in composites capability. Technicians will be able
to apply their training immediately on current programs, such as our
HondaJet engine inlet program and the Next Genera on Jammer,
Increment 1 pod program with Raytheon.
Avia on Week Network Names CPI Aero a Program Excellence Finalist
CPI Aero’s MH‐60 Seahawk Stabilator overhaul and repair program the company performs
for Sikorsky Aircra , a Lockheed Mar n company, was recognized as one of the two finalists
in Avia on Week’s Program Excellence Awards this year. The only US‐based small business
finalist out of all categories, CPI was selected as a finalist in the Supplier Sustainment
category. We were cited for our carefully thought‐out program planning and execu on,
consis ng of receiving assembled product, assessing the damage and crea ng a unique
manufacturing plan for each stabilator repair. Pictured at le , Jessica Hill (Program
Manager) along with Nazz Palmerini (VP, Programs) and Doug McCrosson (President & CEO)
accepted the finalist award from Carole Heddon (Execu ve Editorial Director, Avia on
Week Execu ve Intelligence) at the awards banquet held in November. Nazz Palmerini, Jessica Hill, Carole Heddon, and Doug McCrosson

Environmentally Controlled Bonding Room
CPI Aero takes pride in the collabora ve rela onship it establishes and maintains with its customers. Recently, during the early phases of some of CPI’s newer programs, conversa ons between CPI engineering and our customers revealed that instead of using fasteners as originally planned, certain assemblies would be manufactured using bonding processes. Due to the cri cal nature of these assemblies, it was decided that CPI would be responsible for performing the new bonding processes. To support this internally CPI constructed an environmentally controlled area for bonding purposes.
Two small ovens (approximately 27 cubic feet each) are installed next to the Bonding Room and will be used for curing film adhesive for programs such as the HondaJet engine inlet.
The room is an enclosed space with full environmental control and has
the ability to be upgraded and expanded to achieve clean room
status, if required.
Inside the Bonding Room a freezer will
store film adhesives as well as other
composite products that require it.
A cu ng table is available for suppor ng,
rolling out and cu ng film adhesive or
prepreg, as well as for use as "bagging
sta ons" where fab‐as‐needed and pre‐
made‐by‐design vacuum bags can be set
up on inlet or pod components.
Local vacuum pumps and all bagging
tools and materials will be deployed at
the bagging sta ons inside the room.
CPI will perform metal‐to‐metal bonding, which also requires ovens for curing the film adhesive, in support of the HondaJet engine inlets we currently manufacture. In addi on, we will be performing several bonded seals for our Next Genera on Jammer, Increment 1 pod program with Raytheon, which require heat blankets to cure the sealant. In both cases CPI Aero will be working with film adhesives, vacuum bagging and elevated curing temperatures over me/temp measured cycles.
