CUSTOM-FABRICATED STRAINERS

11

There are two ways to fulfill your requirements fornonstandard strainers. First, we show four fabricateddesigns below. These can be easily modified to yourspecial requirements. If none of these will do the job,

we can create a unique, one-of-a-kind strainer that willfit your needs exactly – with no compromises. Your spe-cial size, pressure rating and materials of constructionrequirements for an Eaton Strainer are never a problem.

AUTOMATIC SELF-CLEANING STRAINERS

12

OperationThe debris-laden dirty fluidenters the strainer's large bot-tom chamber where the linevelocity is reduced. Flow contin-ues upward, passing radiallythrough the “sealed” screenelement. Unwanted materialsare trapped on the inside of thescreen. The flow is uninterrupt-ed and the strained clean fluidcontinues into the outer annulusof the strainer body and exitsthrough the outlet nozzle.

Backwash cleaning is accom-plished by utilizing the pressuredifferential between line pres-sure and atmosphere. A hollowfull flow backwash arm –extending the full length of thescreen element – rotates slowly inside the screen andis piped to atmosphere. The port shoe is in proximityto the screen and its opening is equivalent to the“debris collector” sections created by the convolu-tions and/or the vertical collector bars in theDuraWedge® elements.

When cleaning is required, the automatic backwashvalve opens the system to atmosphere – causing a

high velocity reverse flowacross the isolated section ofthe screen. Dirt and debris areflushed from this segment ofthe screen into the backwasharm and out of the strainer viathe backwash piping.

During the backwashing cyclethe main flow is uninterruptedand continues to be strained inthe normal manner. A manualthrottling valve is recommendedafter the control valve. Thus, backwash flow can be regulat-ed and balanced for optimumperformance and reduction ofwater loss.

An automatic control systemconsisting of a discrete mount-

ed electrical panel, pneumatically or electrically actuated valves and a differential pressure switchoperates the strainer. The cleaning cycle can be setto “activate” by differential pressure and/or on atimed cycle. The control system will automaticallyclose the backwash valve after the screen element isproperly cleaned. The unit can also be operated man-ually from the control panel or in the continuous back-wash mode.

AUTOMATIC SELF-CLEANING STRAINERS

13

DesignThe Eaton Automatic Self-Cleaning Strainer is amotorized unit designed for the continuous removal of entrained solids from liquids in pipeline systems. They have successfully performed in industrial, process, water and wastewater, power, paper andmunicipal applications for over 30 years. With an automatic control system monitoring thestrainer operation, cleaning is accomplished by anintegral backwash system. A small portion of thescreen element is isolated and cleaned by reverseflow. The remaining screen area continues to strain –providing uninterrupted flow. With this efficient design, only a small amount of the liquid being strained isused to carry away the debris from the strainer. The Models 596 and 2596 are available in sizes 2"through 24" in cast construction and 2" through 60" infabricated construction. Design and construction arein general accordance with ANSI and ASME Sec. VIII,Div. 1. A wide range of screen designs are offeredthrough 1/2-inch openings.ApplicationsEaton Automatic Self-Cleaning Strainers are commonly used on water service where the disposalof debris and backwash water is not a problem.Continuous flow is assured and protection is providedfor nozzles, pumps, valves, heat exchangers andprocess equipment. These units can also successfully handle other fluidssuch as white water, black liquor, starch, fuel andlubricating oil, caustic solutions and cooking oils. Adetermining factor in these cases is the recycling ofthe backwash fluid. Automatic self-cleaning strainerswill significantly reduce maintenance costs and pro-vide uninterrupted flow. They are a particularly worth-while investment where the solids loading is high orupset conditions occur. Frequently, cleaning and serv-icing of manual strainers is costly, and if not properlyattended, serious disruptions to the entire piping sys-tem can occur. Also, they are an ideal solution formaintenance problems where the strainer is in aninaccessible location.Typical ApplicationsAutomatic self-cleaning strainers are used in nearlyevery industry to strain fresh, brackish, or salt intakewater for plant services; cooling, process, fire protec-tion, etc.Process Industry – Protect heat exchangers, pumps, valves and water spray nozzles.Power Industry – Protect heat exchangers, pumpseal water, traveling screen wash water.Pulp & Paper – Removing fibers from white water filtrate preventing clogging of nozzles. Separate barkand chips for recycling.Sewage/Waste and Water – Straining secondaryeffluent – thereby protecting spray nozzles while alsoproviding clean plant service water.Primary Metal Industry – Provide clean water forquenching, descaling, blast furnace cooling.

STRAINER BASKETS AND ELEMENTS

14

The basket or element is the heart of an Eaton Strainer. It is designed to be both effective anddurable so that it will function reliably for years. After a particular type of strainer housing has been selected,

equal concern should be given to the basket orscreen design and the perforation or mesh size – forthis alone determines the ultimate functionality and performance of the strainer.

Cylindrical Basketsfor Simplex andDuplex Strainers upto 8˝ SizeThe strainer coverpresses down on thebow-shaped handleand assures a tightseal. This is the stan-dard, basic strainerbasket, available instainless steel orMonel, with a widerange of perforationsand mesh linings tohandle any strainingproblem.

Pleated TypeBaskets for Model72 Simplex and forModel 50 DuplexSizes 10˝ to 18˝Pleated, open typebaskets have a verylow pressure loss. Theconvoluted or pleatedstructure of the screengives much greaterstraining area thanother designs.Available in plain perforated metal orwith a fine mesh lining.

Slanted Top TypeBaskets for Model510 Simplex andfor Model 570Duplex Sizes 8˝ to 36˝The slanted, open topdesign allows fluid toenter easily and cutsdown pressure droploss. By using four ofthese baskets in eachchamber of the strain-er, individual basketsize is reduced. Thismeans only one per-son is needed to cleaneven the largest sizebaskets.

Automatic StrainerScreen ElementsModel 596 and 2596Automatic, Self-Cleaning Strainers usea screen elementrather than a basket totrap unwanted parti-cles. These screen ele-ments are designed sothat, during backwash-ing, the debris is easilydislodged and carriedaway through thebackwash arm and outof the strainer. Severaltypes of screen ele-ments are available tomeet all applicationrequirements.

Magnetic InsertsEaton strainer basketscan be supplied withmagnetic insertswhich are valuablewhen microscopic ironor steel particles arepresent. These mightpass through a finemesh lining, but themagnetic insert willcatch them. Our pow-erful magnets areencased in stainlesssteel to preventcorrosion.

Bag Filtration Systems…for removal of large amounts of very fine material from theprocess media.• Filter vessels in your choice of

stainless steel, carbon steel or corrosion-resistant plastic.

TECHNICAL DATA

15

Pressure Drop CalculationsTo accurately calculate the pressure loss forfilters and strainers in a pipeline, proceed asfollows:

1. First calculate pressure loss using Cv factor formulaat right.

2. Take the pressure loss figure obtained in (1) andrecalculate it using the appropriate correction factorfrom the following tables.

Pressure Loss Calculation Using Cv Factor

Q∆P = — [ Cv ]

∆P = Pressure DropQ = Flow in GPM

Cv = Flow Coefficient

The pressure loss across a strainer or filter can be calculated using the system's flow rateand the Cv factor for that strainer or filter.

For example, a 1˝ strainer with a Cv factor of 8 will have a 4 psi pressure loss in a systemwith a 16 gpm flow rate: (16 ÷ 8)2 = 4.
