OPERATING GUIDELINES

It is important that the spray-hood(s) and toolbar be operatedparallel to the ground (front to back) or with the front of thetoolbar slightly raised. Operating the spray-hood(s) and toolbarparallel or slightly raised will assure that even wear isaccumulated on the hood wear skids while in contact theground.

If the spray-hoods dig into the ground during operation,

lengthen the top linkage of the 3-point hitch to slightly raise thefront portion of the spray-hood.

If the top linkage of the 3-point hitch is raised, verify that theswing arms (1) [Figure 3] on the spray-hoods remain angledback and are not too high.

The spray-hood wear skids should contact the ground duringoperation, or as close to the ground as possible.

OPERATING GUIDELINES

REDBALL® SPRAY MONITORS

For the best performance of your Willmar Fabrication 915SPRAY-HOOD, Willmar Fabrication strongly suggests the useof Redball® Spray Monitors.

The Redball® Spray Monitor will visually show if one of thenozzles on the 915 SPRAY-HOOD begins to plug, allowing youto verify your application rate. Be sure to follow the instructionswhen assembling the monitors and choosing the proper ballsfor use in the monitor columns in relation to the gallons perminute which is flowing through the columns in the monitor.

When assembling the Redball® Spray Monitor, the red glassballs are to be used in most cases. If in question, check the flowrate.

Please observe the operating instructions enclosed with theRedball® Spray Monitor.

Helpful Hints to achieve top performance of your Redball®Spray Monitors:

• Redball® Spray Monitors are recommended for use withthe 915 SPRAY-HOOD. It is important that they be used todetect plugged spray nozzles.

• When equipment is not in use, cover the monitors with adark plastic or sun protective material if equipment is notstored inside. This will prevent the clear plastic poly body ofthe monitor from premature darkening.

• Remember, the spray monitor is a flow indicator not a flowregulator.

NOTE The Redball® Spray Monitor is a flow indicator. It is NOT a flow regulator.

CALIBRATION

11

915 SPRAY-HOOD CALIBRATION

The instructions for the calibration of the Willmar Fabrication915 SPRAY-HOOD offers you the required information toperform this task. For proper application it is important that youdo this to assure that the correct output volume comes from thespray nozzles.

Calibration Instructions

If you change from the standard nozzle configuration, followsteps 1 thru 5. Make every attempt to work with the standardnozzles before changing.

If no nozzle change is required start at step 6 and refer to steps1 thru 5 for reference.

Steps:

1. Refer to Chemical Manufacturer's Label and Record:

• Nozzle recommendations

• GPA (Gallons Per Acre of Carrier and Chemical)

GPA = ______________________

(Converting L/ha to GPA: GPA = L/ha x 0.107)

2. Select and Measure Ground Speed:

• Drive machine a measured distance (not less than 300feet) from start to finish at planned operating speed, recording travel time in seconds. In field conditions, perform this three (3) times with the spray tank(s) 50%full.

• MPH = (Distance in feet x 60) / (Time in seconds x 88)

MPH (km/h) = ______________________

(Converting km/h to MPH: MPH = km/h x 0.621)

(Converting meters to feet: feet = m x 3.281)

3. Determine the Effective Sprayed Width (W):

• Band Spraying: W = (Band Width in inches) / (# ofNozzles Per Band)

W (inch) = _________________________

(Converting cm to inches: inches = cm x 0.394)

4. Determine Flow Rate GPM (Gallons Per Minute):

• GPM = (GPA x MPH x W) / 5940

GPM = ______________________

Page 18: 915 spray - hood manual - Willmar Fab · 2015-03-09 · Two (2) 90 degree elbow nozzle holders are located on the left and right of the side of the spray- hood. Nozzle holders are

12

CALIBRATION

5. Selecting New Nozzles:

• Refer to spray manufacturer's catalog for nozzle type andsize.

• Suitable for applications

• That will provide desired flow (GPM) atrecommended pressure.

6. Verify Nozzles Currently in the 915 SPRAY-HOOD:

• Refer to spray nozzle manufacturer's specifications toverify proper GPM and pressure ratings. For consistentspray application, use the same nozzle throughout the915 SPRAY-HOOD as recommended in the OperatingGuidelines. (See “GENERAL OPERATINGGUIDELINES” on page 5.)

7. Verify Spray Output:

• With the 915 SPRAY-HOOD operating at the desiredpressure, collect flow from nozzle, checking actual toexpected output (GPM). Two or more nozzles should beverified. If necessary, adjust pressure slightly to achieveoptimum output. When checking nozzles already in the915 SPRAY-HOOD, replace if two or more exceed thedesired flow rate by 10% or more.

8. Determine Amount of Chemical to Add to Tank:

• Gallons = (Tank capacity in gallons x RecommendedChemical Rate in oz/acre) / (GPA x 128)

Gallons = _____________________

(Converting Liters to Gallons: Gallons = L x 0.265)

(Converting mL/ha to oz/acre: oz/acre = mL/ha x 0.0137)

9. Determine Number of Acres Possible to Treat Per Tank:

• Acres = (Tank capacity in gallons x Row Width in inches)/ (GPA x Band Width in inches)

IMPORTANT Pressure adjustment will affect droplet sizes, impacting drift and coverage. When changing speeds, pressures, configuration, nozzles or formulations, be sure to always re-calibrate the system.

SUMMARY

13

915 SPRAY-HOOD SUMMARY

• Always read and follow label directions provided withthe chemicals being used.

• Follow the Nozzle Manufacturer's recommended nozzlepressure rate for best performance.

• Always calibrate your 915 SPAY-HOOD(s) to determinefor certain that the hood is giving the proper volumefrom the spray nozzles. (See “Calibration Instructions”on page 11.)

• Always operate the 915 SPRAY-HOOD with both front andrear wind curtains in place. Replace wind curtains as wearor damage occurs.

• Adjust the hood to desired height for optimum chemicalcoverage.

• 915 SPRAY-HOOD swing arms should be angled back, when toolbar height is properly set. This allows the spray-hood wear skids to slide easily and prevent the spray-hood(s) from jumping.

• The swing arm pivot bolts and J-Pins are designed toremain stationary with the swing arm bushings allowed topivot around them. Grease the swing arm bushingsregularly, and check during the season for excessive sidemotion. Replace swing arm pivot bolts and J-Pins whenworn. (See “Installing the swing arms.” on page 3.)

• The 915 SPRAY-HOOD should always be used with thefront and rear knockdown bars in place. The front barbends over the weeds for better application of chemicals.

• 915 SPRAY-HOOD(s) have been provided with lift orgathering rods. The gathering rods collect larger weedsthat are located closer to the crop rows and pulls themunder the spray-hood.

IMPORTANTThe spray-hood wear skids should contact the ground during operation, or as close to the ground as possible.

IMPORTANTWhen replacing lower swing arm J-Pins in the 915 SPRAY-HOOD, be sure to install the 5/16” wear washer between the hood and swing arms. Failure to do this will cause wear directly to the spray-hood.

IMPORTANTUse extreme care if adjusting the lift or gathering rods. Over adjustment may result in dragging the planted crop into the spray-hood.

SUMMARY

• It is important that the spray-hood(s) and toolbar beoperated parallel to the ground (front to back) or with thefront of the toolbar slightly raised. Operating the spray-hood(s) and toolbar parallel or slightly raised will assurethat even wear is accumulated on the hood wear skidswhile in contact the ground.

• Inspect the 915 SPRAY-HOOD wear slides (1) [Figure 1]periodically. Replace the wear slides if worn or damagedbefore damage to the spray-hood occurs.

• The maximum suggested field operating speed for thehooded sprayer is 5 MPH.

• On wing model hooded sprayers, or when the 915 SPRAY-HOOD is mounted to wing that will fold vertically, fold downthe wings to a level position when the equipment is storedor parked. This will limit premature twist and stress on theswing arms, curtains, and mounting channels.

NOTE Maintaining speeds at 5 MPH or lower limits the potential of chemical drift and the possibility of getting onto the plant row with the equipment.

DISCLAIMER Willmar Fabrication, LLC does not claim any responsibility of application rates, type of spray tips used or any equipment that can cause crop injury, ineffectiveness of chemical or any other unintended damages because of weather conditions or application which are all beyond the control of Willmar Fabrication, LLC or the seller.
