A polymers is a larger molecule that forms when many smaller molecules are linked together by covalent bonds.

Poly means “many.”DNA is a type of polymer.

Types of Polymers

Synthetic polymers are is an industrial produced chemical substances consisting of a number of molecules together with covalent bonds. (Exp. Plastics, rubber, nylon, and polyethylene.)

Synthetic Polymers

Supply of natural rubber is limited because of how much we use it.

We make rubber because supplies are low. Rubber is copolymers (polymers consisting

of more than one monomer)

Natural polymers are made by living things (not humans), plants, animals, ect… (Exp. Sugar molecules are linked together in chains.)

Natural Polymers

Sugar molecules have actually been found in the gas around a young sung like star!

Sugar molecules are the most common natural polymers.

In the 1800’s Charles Goodyear came up with a plan to make rubber more heat resistant. He succeeded with a rubber called Vulcanized Rubber.

Nucleic acids are large neutron containing polymers found in the nuclei of cells. There are two types. DNA,RNA

Two Strands of DNA line up in sequence. DNA looks like a rungs of a ladder. There held together by strong molecular attractions between hydrogen atoms on one side and nitrogen or oxygen on the other.

1) What are polymers? 2) What are two types of polymers? 3) What type of polymer is rubber? 4)Who came up with a way to make rubber more

heat resistant. (Hint: Last name type of tire.) 5) What are two nucleic acids? (Hint: Learned

about them last year.) 6) Where have scientist recently found sugar

molecules that is surprising? 7) What type of polymer is sugar molecules? 8) What is Vulcanized rubber? 9) Why do we make rubber? 10) What are copolymers?
