Building a Tepee

Building a TepeeTim and Jamila’s class is learning about the Plains Indians, the Native Americans who lived in the Great Plains of North America. There were many different tribes living in the Plains, including the Blackfoot, Cheyenne, and Lakota Sioux. The Plains Indians were dependent on bison, also known as buffalo, for many aspects of their lifestyle. In addition to hunting the bison for food, they used the bison’s hides to make clothes and shelter and their bones to make tools. Some of the tribes were nomadic, meaning they had no fixed home and traveled as a group, often to follow herds of bison. Other tribes lived in villages and farmed the land as well as hunting bison.Originally, the Plains Indians traveled by foot because there were no horses in North America. However, when Europeans came to North America, they brought horses with them, and the animals became part of the Plains Indians’ culture. The horses allowed the tribes to travel greater distances to hunt bison and made it easier for them to transport their belongings. Many of the tribes lived in dwellings called tepees. Tepees were tents in the shape of cones and were usually made from skins of animals, such as bison, and wooden poles.Tepees were useful for a variety of reasons. They were sturdy structures that could be taken down, moved, and put back up very easily. This meant that they were ideal housing for people who move from place to place. Also, they provided shelter from rain, retained warmth in the winter, and kept relatively cool in the summer heat. An image of a traditional tepee is shown below.

As part of their school activities, Tim and Jamila are making a tepee, which they will put up in the schoolyard. To make the tepee cover, they first will cut out a large semicircle from a big piece of canvas. They made a scale drawing of the tepee cover, as shown below.

After cutting out the semicircle, Tim and Jamila will decorate the tepee by painting it with traditional Native American designs. The tepee will be supported by several poles. The poles are made from bamboo and will be 14 feet long. Two of the poles will be placed directly across from each other at the base of the tepee. Each pole will form a 48-degree angle with the ground. The poles will meet at the top of the tepee, where they will be tied together.Tim and Jamila are excited to learn about Native American culture and are looking forward to showing their classmates the tepee they build.
