Dear Parents, BACK TO A BUSY TERM

During our Staff Development Day, in addition to regular planning for what is set to be a very busy Term 3 we were able to finalise the review of all the school policies that were updated to meet the mandatory requirements set by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). Last term, we successfully submitted the application for the renewal of our Registration with the NESA. Final preparations are now being carried out by all members of staff with less than a week before our inspection visit on Thursday, 1st August 2019. The purpose of the inspection is to assess our application for renewal of Registration by considering the school’s compliance with the requirements of the Education Act 1990.

The agenda will involve meeting with the inspectors, reviewing relevant documentation including teaching programs and checking the school’s facilities, premises and buildings. As part of the application process we have already prepared and transfered a large volume of documents electronically. These documents include teaching programs for each Year level in each of the Key Learning Areas (KLAs). Documentation showing relevant school policies, allocation of times and the qualifications of our teachers. We have also included the assessment plans for each of the KLAs for each Year level, indicating how student performance is assessed, monitored and recorded.

It may all sound daunting, but this is what teachers are expected to do on a daily basis. Therefore, I believe our preparation since the start of the year is well on task and we are ready for this assessment and review.

Since our last inspection the school has also been approved as a ‘Teacher Accreditation Authority’ (TAA). As a result, an application has also been placed to renew our approval as a TAA., in conjunction with our school Registration. This also involves maintenance to strict guidelines and evidence of compliance at all times. Once again, we are confident that all required evidentiary documents are in place and our approval to operate as a TAA will be renewed.

CELEBRATING ‘VARTAVAR’ ‘Vartavar’ is one of several ancient Armenian festivals that has survived until present. Although now a Christian tradition, celebrating the transfiguration of Jesus Christ (the Feast of Transfiguration), Vartavar’s history dates back to pagan times. The ancient festival is traditionally associated with the goddess Astghik, who was the goddess of water, beauty, love and fertility. The festivities associated with this religious observance of Astghik were named ‘Vartavar’ because Armenians offered her roses as a celebration (‘vart’ means ‘rose’ and ‘var’ mean ‘rise’), which was celebrated during the harvest time.

On this day in Armenia, people of all ages drench each other with water and rose petals. It is common to see people pouring buckets of water from balconies on unsuspecting people walking below them. The festival is very popular among children as it is one day where they can get away with pulling pranks. It is also a means of refreshment on the usually hot and dry summer days of July.

As we are due to celebrate ‘Vartavar’ this Sunday, our students were given the opportunity to join the festivities in our own Alexander school way! Taking into consideration the current season in the southern hemisphere, we made some modifications to the ‘water games’ that the students joined in to play this afternoon. Armenian Classroom Վարդավառ

Եկեղեցին այս օրը կը նշէ որպէս Այլակերպության կամ պայծառակերութեան տօն: Այս եւս շարժական տօն է և կը նշուի Զատիկէն 98 օր յետոյ: Տօնը, սակայն, բնապաշտական ժամանակներէն է և թերևս եղած է հայ ժողովուրդի ամենասիրելի տօնը: Հայաստանի որոշ շրջաններու մէջ Վարդավառը կը նշեն անշարժ տոմարով` Յուլիսի վերջին կիրակի օրը: Այս տարի Վարդավառը կը նշուի Յուլիսի 28-ին: Վարդավառը ջրի տօն է և այդ օրը բոլորը խրախճանքէն, երգ ու պարէն բացի, նաեւ կը ջրեն միմիանց: Եկեղեցին այս կը բացատրէ այսպէս՝ «Երբ Նոյը Արարատէն իջաւ Նախիջեւան, որպէսզի իր ժառանգներուն մէջ անմահ պահէ ջրհեղեղի մասին յիշատակը, կարգադրեց, որ ամէն տարի այս օրը ջրեն միմիանց:

Մարդիկ Վարդավառին ուխտի կ'երթային սարերը, ուր գետերու, աղբիւրներու ակունքներն են և այդ ջրի ակունքներուն մօտ ալ Վարդավառի տօնախմբութիւններ կը կատարէին, խաղեր ու խրախճանք կը կազմակերպէին: Ամէնատարածուած խաղը կոխն էր, որ հավանաբար նուիրուած էր Վահագն աստծուն, որ կրակի, ուժի և պատերազմի աստուածն էր: Վահագնին նուիրուած էր նաև վանեցի երիտասարդներու կազմակերպած ռազմական խաղերը Վարդավառի տօնին, երբ խմբերու բաժնուած, պարսատիկներով ու փայտերով «կը կռուէին (խաղ կռիւ)» միմյանց դէմ:

Շատ տարածուած էին աղջիկներու զանազան երգ-խաղերը, զուարճախաղերը: Տօնը կը սկսուէր շաբաթ երեկոյեան, երբ ուխտաւորները մատաղ կ'ընէին, անասուն կը մորթէին և գիշերային խարոյկի շուրջ կը դիմաւորէին Վարդավառը: Խարոյկ վառելու և տօնը կէս գիշերին դիմաւորելու սովորոյթը լաւ է պահպանուած յատկապէս Լոռի մէջ, ուր Վարդավառը ժողովրդական ամէնասիրելի տօնն է: Վարդավառը նաև խնձորի տօն էր: Առհասարակ, Վարդավառի սեղաններուն առատ է եղած միրգը: Ժողովուրդը տօնը երբեմն անուանած էր «խնձորի պաս»: Տարուայ առաջին խնձորը կ'ուտէին Վարդավառին:

Վարդավառին՝ ցորենի հասկերէն խաչբուռ գործելու սովորութիւնը պահպանուեր է առ այժմ: Խաչբուռը կամ խաչփունջը կը հիւսուէր ցորենի հասած արտէն հնձուած առաջին փունջէն և կը նուիրաբերուէր աստվածներուն, որպէս գոհաբանութիւն՝ բերքի համար: Խաչբուռը կը հիւսուէր խաչի տեսքով, կապելով երկինքն ու երկիրը. այն բացարձակապէս չի առնչուիր Յիսուսի խաչափայտին հետ:

Երիտասարդները Վարդավառի շաբաթ երեկոյեան կը վառէին խարոյկը մինչեւ լուսաբաց, որմէ ետք խնձոր կը խորովէին և կ'ուտէին: Խարոյկի շուրջ տօնախմբութեան կը յաջորդէր երգը, պարը, խաղը և ուրախութիւնը:

Վարդավառի տօնի խաղերէն մէկն է ձիարշավութիւնը, երբ երիտասարդները կը մրցին իրենց ձիերով` ցոյց տալով իրենց հմտութիւնները արագութեան և ձիախաղի մէջ: Տօնը, որ հեթանոսական ժամանակներէն հասած է մեզի, ան նուիրուած է Աստղիկ դիցուհիին: Վարդավառ բառը բաղկացած է վարդ և վառել բառերէն, որ կը նշանակէ սիրոյ գերագոյն խորհրդով օծուիլ: Աստղիկը հայոց սիրոյ և գեղեցկութեան աստուա-ծուհին էր, ուժի և պատերազմի աստուած Վահագնի սիրելին:

Վարդավառը ջուրի տօն է: Այս օրը մարդիկ կը խմբուին ջուրի ակունքներու մօտ և զոհաբերութիւններ կը կատարեն, որմէ յետոյ կը սկսուի խրախճանքը: Ընդունուած է զոհաբերել ուլիկ և գառնուկ:

Աւանդութեան համաձայն՝ Աստղիկ դիցուհին ամէն գիշեր կը լողար Մշոյ դաշտով հոսող Արածանի գետին մէջ: Սիրահարուած երիտասարդները կը հաւաքուէին մօտակայ բարձունքին, որպէսզի տեսնէին աստուածուհին: Սակայն Աստղիկն աննկատ մնալու համար, ջուր կը սրսկէր երիտասարդներուն ուղղութեամբ և դաշտը կը պատէր մշուշով, այս պատճառով ալ երկիրը կոչուեցաւ Մուշ, դաշտը՝ Մշոյ դաշտ, (այստեղէն ալ` եկած է Վարդավառին միմիանց ջրելու սովորութիւնը):
