Volume 6 – Issue 5 Message from the Executive Director Jean-Pierre Beaulieu Constantly growing!

At the beginning of each golf season, expectations are high. We can say that 2018 fulfilled them. Playing conditions, weather, athletic performances, presence of more golfers on the course. Every box was checked.

Obviously, we have absolutely no control over the weather. Yet, we were quite spoiled throughout the season. Our courses were in great conditions despite a lack of water and, in the end, those great sunshiny days were ideal to promote playing more often and increase the number of golfers on the course.

Québec golfers have appropriated the Get Out, Play Golf campaign. https://www.facebook.com/SortezGolfez/?ref=br_tf

Based on data collected by the NGCOA, with a 5% increase, 2018 was the 4th season in which the number

of golf rounds played in Québec has increased over the past 5 years. Many factors influenced this participation growth. Golf clubs were proactive to organize various activities. The tourism offer was also quite dynamic. The Get Out, Play Golf campaign powered by Golf Québec also contributed massively to raise interest for golf towards occasional and regular players. Through contests, fun video clips, and a Tour, many clubs used the campaign by sharing its posts and creating their own content. Yet, the biggest impact of the campaign resides in the way golfers have stepped up to the plate and used the #getoutplaygolf and #sortezgolfez hashtags. The Québec golfers literally took over the promotional campaign. And we believe that it is only the beginning of a beautiful story!

In 2018, close to 50 new establishments have joined the Golf in Schools program. After ten years, the Golf in Schools program is far from dying down. With its 650 elementary and high schools located in every corner of the province, it is actually booming! In 2018, close to 50 new schools establishments joined the program. This was made possible, among others, by the new Pr1mo program implemented by the RSEQ and which is aiming to develop competencies of our youth in physical education and health as well as their motor skills through various sports activities. http://www.golfquebec.org/en/pages.asp?id=134 Many diversified initiatives that contribute to growing the game of golf. Everyone can help and make a difference. 2018 was unforgettable. We can already foresee that 2019 will also be a great year. Enjoy your winter break and get ready to Get Out, Play Golf again, next April.

Fundraiser Tournament

$95,000 to support the Golf in Schools initiative

The 12th edition of the Golf Québec Fundraiser Tournament was held on October 2 at the Royal Montreal Golf Club. Mr. Ted Fletcher, founder of the Mint Green Group and President of Cobra Puma Golf Canada, was Honorary President of the event. This traditional golf celebration was the pinnacle of the “From School to the Golf Club” fundraiser in which $95,000 was collected this year.

Golf Québec was honoured to team up with the Royal Montreal Golf Club and more specifically with Ted Fletcher, Honorary President of the event and member of the club, as well as with Robert Côté, Club Captain. “Mr. Fletcher and Mr. Côté accepted the challenge raised by Golf Québec with great enthusiasm. Both of them share a passion for the game of golf. True to high standards in their professional lives, these inspiring gentlemen were committed to making a difference and facilitating the transition of children to our golf clubs. They truly were instrumental to the great success of this fundraiser,” confided Jean-Pierre Beaulieu, Executive Director of Golf Québec.

Despite a very wet and grey October day, representatives of the business and golf communities happily got together the 12th edition of this great golf celebration. From School to the Golf Club Following its tradition, Golf Québec is promoting junior golf development on the theme “From School to the Golf Club”. The main purpose of the Fundraiser Tournament is

to raise the money required by Golf Québec to pursue golf development initiatives specifically designed for children and families. The collected funds will be used to pursue the initiatives that facilitate the transition of children from their Golf in Schools introduction program to actually playing at the golf club. This can be done through golf professional visitations in teaching establishments and Future Links Field Trips to the club. Through twelve editions of this key fundraiser, over $800,000 was collected to promote the sport development of new young golfers. This year’s event was made possible with the contribution of major partners, including Cobra Puma Golf and Park Avenue Group.

Through the “From School to the Golf Club” fundraiser, $95,000 was collected this year. http://www.golfquebec.org/en/pages.asp?id=229 Well-deserved honours Golf Québec also took this opportunity to introduce the business and golf communities as well as its partners to the young Québec athletes who were crowned on the provincial, national, and international stages. Three members of the national team were in attendance: 58th on the amateur world ranking, Joey Savoie of Pinegrove is a National Amateur Squad member, as well as Céleste Dao who is the Canadian Junior champion, Mexican Junior Champion and #1 junior girl in Canada and Christopher Vandette, the Junior and Juvenile Canadian Champion. Both of them are junior members at the Summerlea Golf and Country Club and played, in 2018, with the Golf Canada National Development Squad. http://golfcanada.ca/team-canada/

Other young rising stars participated in the event to support the Golf in School initiatives. They were: Laurent Desmarchais (Vallée du Richelieu), 4 times champion this summer - Emily Romancew (Elm Ridge), winner of the Québec Future Links Championship -

Malik Dao (Summerlea), three-time gold medallist of the Québec Games - Logan Boucher (Summerlea), provincial juvenile champion.

Some of Québec’s most talented young athletes supported the Golf in Schools initiative by attending the event. In addition, Lisa Meldrum who is currently the teaching professional at the Royal Montreal Golf Club, addressed the everyone in attendance. She explained the commitment of the Royal Montreal Golf Club in junior development programs and how they contributed to her own development path towards becoming a golf professional. In her amateur years, she was crowned numerous times on the provincial and Canadian stages. She competed as a professional golfer on the LPGA tour in 2010 and 2011.

Heading to Le Mirage in 2019 On October 7, 2019, Golf Québec will present the 13th edition of its annual fundraiser event at the prestigious Golf Le Mirage in collaboration with Daigneau Eau de Source who will be the official presenter. Don’t miss it.

Rising stars Always aiming for more!

Be proud of our young Québec athletes. From one season to another, we are always hoping to see them perform exceptionally well as they represent Québec on Team Canada. Our expectations are always high for those performing on the provincial and national stages. Clearly, our wishes were granted in 2018.

A star in the sky At 17, Céleste Dao is collecting prestigious titles at an incredibly fast pace. The Summerlea Golf and Country Club member just completed her 2nd season with the Team Canada Development Squad. #1 junior golfer in the country in 2017 and 2018, Céleste was crowned three times on the provincial, national, and international stages: • Provincial Junior Girls’ Championship • Canadian Junior Girls’ Championship • Mexico Junior Girls’ Championship

She finished 5th in the World’s Junior Girls’ Championship and represented Canada in the Youth Olympic Games held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Talk about consistency At age 15, Christopher Vandette was the 2017 Canadian Juvenile Champion. The Summerlea golfer is a member of the Team Canada Development Squad and, in 2018, he planned on defending that title. Vandette actually did more than that. He earned a double title and was crowned Junior and Juvenile Champion. This is quite an impressive achievement for this 16 year-old golfer who had already collected both the provincial junior and amateur titles in

2017 besides winning two gold medals at the Canada Games.

We are not referring to the height of the Vallée du Richelieu golfer who is towering above others by many inches. Laurent Desmarchais truly has a head start on his development path. Four-time winner of major events, this summer, Laurent also set a never seen before record on the amateur stage as he registered a cumulative score of -19 in Bromont. • Provincial junior champion • Winner of the Ontario Future Links Championship • Junior Match Play Champion • Winner of the Graham Cooke Junior Invitational –

record rounds of 62 and 62 (-19)

Then, they teamed up again as part of the Team Canada Amateur Squad to compete at the Azalea Championship and in the 2018 RBC Canadian Open. Both are ranking amongst them best amateur golfers of the world (Savoie 58th). Their path towards professional tours is quite clear

set out and they should take the turn in a near future. Team honours It is unthinkable to forget the performances of our provincial teams in Canadian Championships. The Québec team composed of Hugo Bernard, Joey Savoie, and Julien Sale captured the Willingdon Cup in the inter-provincial competition presented within the Canadian Men’ Amateur Championship. Céleste Dao, Élizabeth Labbé, and Emily Romancew also captured the team victory for Québec in the inter-provincial competition presented within the Canadian Junior Girls’ Championship.

Fundraiser campaign The crucial impact of a donation

The 2018 season is now finished. We hope that you enjoyed it and had the opportunity to introduce a friend, a family member or a child to golf. With your help and that of many others, perhaps, more children had the opportunity to discover golf in our introduction initiatives. And that is exactly what we are looking for: more children on the golf courses!

This is why Golf Québec intends on working twice as hard to roll out its golf introduction initiatives designed for children in their schools and municipalities. Key programs supporting this strategy include Golf in Schools, Future Links Field Trips and the First Drive program which facilitates access to the game.

Thanks to the contribution of numerous donors over the past years, 650 elementary and high schools teach golf within their Phys. Ed. curriculum. http://www.golfquebec.org/en/pages.asp?id=134 Up to now, offensives of the past golf season have had a significant impact. Thanks to the contribution of numerous donors over the past years, we now see 650 elementary and high schools where golf is thought within the Phys. Ed. curriculum. In addition, about forty golf clubs are using Future Links driven by Acura.

A donation to facilitate the transition “From School to the Golf Club” It is now your turn to make a difference. Make an online donation and contribute actively to introducing many children to the game of golf. www.golfquebec.org/donations More than ever, we need the financial support of golf amateurs to stimulate and supervise our youths, furthermore, while passing on the strong values of the game.

In the spring the city of Sainte-Julie helped the Du Moulin School implement a Golf in Schools program. With a donation, you will facilitate their transition to the golf club and help maintain a long tradition of golf participation while promoting a healthy lifestyle. This is why your donations are so vital. In the facts, for each donation cumulating $500, we will be able to: • Equip the school of your choice with the complete Golf

in Schools teaching kit and adapted material. • Organize a Future Links Field Trip in a golf club,

enabling many students to have a positive experience on the course.

• Organize an in-school visit with a golf professional, in a special event or city activity.

For each financial contribution of $25 and more, Sports-Québec will remit on behalf of the Québec Golf Federation tax receipts corresponding to the eligible donation as part of the Placements Sports matching program. http://www.golfquebec.org/en/pages.asp?id=236
