About Academic Regalia
he custom of wearing distinctive dress for academic ceremonies dates back to the Middle Ages, when people dressed in
keeping with their class. The clergy were the literate class, so early academic costume was clerical. A heavy dark gown seems to have been worn at all times. Hoods and capes were also necessary during European winters because the buildings where scholars lived, studied, and taught were cold. From the beginning at Harvard in 1636, the faculties of American universities have worn distinguishing costumes. Those holding a bachelor’s degree wear a gown distinguished by long pointed sleeves hanging nearly to the knees. The master’s gown has long closed sleeves with a slit for the arm near the middle of the sleeves. The doctor’s gown is faced with a broad strip of velvet
and has three horizontal velvet bars on each sleeve. The level of degree is shown by the size of the hood, the width of the velvet trimming, and, in case of the doctoral hoods, by the shape. The bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s hoods are 3 feet, 3½ feet, and 4 feet long, respectively. In the same order, velvet trimming is 2, 3, and 5 inches wide. This velvet trimming extends all around the hood on the exposed edge, but to make a more comfortable fit, it is allowed to narrow at the neck band. The color of the trim denotes the field of learning in which it was given, and the hood provides the best clues for identifying the level of the degree and the institution which awarded it. Among the subjects represented by the colors in hoods worn by Schreiner University faculty and administrative staff are the following:
he appropriate cap for all degrees is the familiar mortar board. A black tassel, or one of the colors signifying the field of
specialization, hanging to the left of the face, is appropriate for all degrees. Those holding a doctor’s degree may wear a soft velvet cap or the mortar board with the tassel in whole or in part of gold thread. Schreiner University Board of
Trustees are wearing robes of maroon with white bars, representing Schreiner University colors. In 2020, the academic regalia for Schreiner’s bachelor and master students was redesigned incorporating the official Schreiner tartan in the gown and hood, connecting to the university’s Scottish heritage.

Our Tartan
The Origin of the Schreiner University Legacy Tartan In 2018, the official university tartan was registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans in an effort to reconnect the university to its Scottish heritage. The official thread count is W1 W9 K23 DR95 W1 W9 K23. The first three thread counts represent “1923” marking in white - one of our school colors - the founding of the university and black as an official accent color. The 95 Maroon count represents the 95th year of the founding of the university in which the tartan was passed. Finally, we follow back with the 1923 thread again in white and black to represent the future reflection of our past 95 years of educational excellence.
A Note of Thanks
This past March, Schreiner University followed Governor Abbott’s Executive Order No. GA-08 by closing all residence halls and transitioning all instructional delivery on-line in order to comport with the law. As a result, the final weeks of the Schreiner Experience was directly impacted for all students especially graduating seniors. Then, the following letter was anonymously received by the Registrar’s Office.
WE LOVE YOU, CLASS OF COVID-19!
Blessings
Blessing of Families and Friends Dr. William Davis, Dean of Faculty
It is only prudent to take a moment to remember that while your college journey was yours, you did not do it alone. Family and friends and friends that are now family can be the glue to help keep you together in life. Behind every one person is a whole community of people. Graduates, I invite you to take a moment to pause and reflect on those who have journeyed with you through college. Bring their images to mind. Remember all of the good memories they helped you create, remember all of the difficult things they brought you through. Hold on to those moments. May you have many more of them. May God bless you, your family and your friends and you continue your life's journey beyond this place.
Blessing for Health Dr. Wanda Sparks, Director of Nursing
As a human, may we never take for granted a healthy mind, body and spirit. On this graduation day, I would like to say a blessing of health over you and your family. May God bless you each and everyone. From this day forward, may the Lord be with you, as a guide and your protector. May He encircle you with angels, liken to a campfire. May your spirit be nourished by the work you do, may hope lead you forward and courage sustain you. I pray for peace of mind. May your thoughts be filled with love, joy, compassion and kindness. Each moment you wake and in each breath you take may you be sanctified. In closing, I pray that you receive God’s favor and grace and may you be in good health all the days of your life. Amen
Blessing of Career Ms. Marta Diffen, Director of Development
Graduates, you may now have faced one of the greatest challenges you will ever face in your lifetime. What did you find within and learn about yourself in the last 5 months? Who were you in the moment of challenge? Today, you continue your journey that started when you enrolled in Schreiner. The world awaits you, your leadership, your talents, your compassion, your empathy, your integrity, your humor and your resilience. You and all that you are, make a career, the career doesn’t make you. No matter what your chosen profession is or the career that you create, sometimes those are not the same things;
May you discover your calling or career and may it renew you, May you push past your fears and strengthen your resolve and your voice,
May you inspire others and also be inspired, May you build a life of service and be a contributor to your community,
May you work with integrity, compassion, empathy, vision and hope, And, finally, remember to continue to develop yourself,
By doing so, you will develop those around you and together, you will achieve more.
Blessing for Wisdom and Knowledge Dr. Samuel J. Dreeben, Assistant Professor of Psychology
As you reach this summit today equipped with great knowledge, I hope you will take the time to pause and take in the view. The knowledge you have gained is powerful - it provides predictability and methodology, skills and even status but it needs something more - perspective. If there is a silver lining in these past few months, it may be that it has forced us all to develop perspective - perspective on the finite nature of life, the importance of other people, and our place within creation. My prayer for you, Class of 2020, is that together, the knowledge and the perspective you have earned will develop into true wisdom, a wisdom grounded in humble compassion and filled with moments of gratitude, laughter, and wonder at the great beauty of it all.
Blessing for Continued Spiritual Inquiry The Reverend Ms. Kelsey Penn, ‘11
Associate Campus Minister & Coordinator for Purposeful Lives
At my seminary graduation a professor asked me if I was leaving with more answers or more questions. I replied that I had more questions than ever before. My professor then said to me, "Good! Never stop questioning." And so I pass that advice on to you class of 2020. There is so much to learn and explore in the world. There are so many ways to engage in your own spiritual journey. Seek out people to learn from, books to read, experiences to have. Take in every opportunity that is presented to you. I pray that you will never stop questioning, never stop exploring, never stop engaging in your own spiritual journey and remember the foundation you built while you were here.
Blessing of the Connection to the Schreiner University Family Dr. Charlie McCormick, President
We call the college from which we graduate our alma mater. This phrase is often translated as the foster or fostering mother. It suggests the ways in which we have become like family—spending years under the same roofs; sharing meals; reading, thinking, and aspiring together; laughing, shouting, and weeping together. Like family members everywhere, we acknowledge that time takes us in new directions. But, as we follow those new paths, may our hearts always remember that we have a home and a fostering mother to which we can return in these hills.
Blessing of the Hoods Dr. Travis Frampton, Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs
Since medieval times scholars have worn these robes, but the hood is special. The hood indicates the distinctive mark that the bearer has earned a college degree. It signifies a scholarly and personal achievement. Judges, choirs, and clerics all wear robes, but only the college educated have earned the right to wear the hood. In the blessing of the hoods, we mark that you now Leave With Achievement. Receive this blessing of the hood, a symbol of all you have accomplished in the past and all you will accomplish in the future, with gratitude.
Graduates, we look forward to the ways your contributions of goodness and leadership will be a blessing to all as you help build a more humane and just world. May you strive towards excellence in all you do so that you honor God's gift of knowledge; use this gift to speak for justice and peace, to sing with joy, to comfort those around you, to raise up your community, and to serve the world.

University Ring
chreiner University’s official class rings reflect the school’s history and traditions. Designed by students in 2014, the official university ring unifies the campus community with a single symbol that represents
pride for the university. Elements on the official ring include:
Top — The university’s official seal with an inner oval that represents the bullring, where military students once worked off demerits by marching around the oval.
Side — Twelve leaves represent the 12 original graduates of Schreiner in 1924. Two soldiers holding aloft crossed swords honor the school’s early history as a military institute. The figure of Captain Charles Schreiner honors the school’s founder and namesake, a Hill Country rancher, merchant and former Texas Ranger.
Side — The Weir academic building, one of the original structures, on the steps of which class photos of the incoming freshmen and graduates are taken. Deer represent the always-present whitetail herd, an integral part of the campus. The name Mountaineers refers to the name locals gave to the militia group Charles Schreiner led in the early days of Kerr County, and the nickname adopted by the university as the mascot. The date 1923 honors the year the school was founded.
The rings are also engraved on the inside with the words Leave With Achievement, the second of two statements inscribed on the main gate of the campus. The other, for those arriving, is Enter With Hope.

Presidential Challenge Coins
he history of challenge coins is military in nature and can be traced as far back as the Civil War when soldiers carried a coin from their hometown throughout the conflict and then continued to carry it after
the war as a reminder of their experiences. The coins are still an active symbol in today’s military forces. In addition to the military, law men and women, and firefighters are also known to carry challenge coins today.
At Schreiner University, the Presidential Challenge Coin series was established by Dr. Charlie McCormick after his presidential inauguration in 2017. The five coins that can be earned by undergraduate students include:
Enter with Hope Acceptance of the Schreiner Promise during the Fall Academic Convocation ceremony
Academic Excellence Earning the President’s List (4.0 GPA) any single semester
Leadership Attaining various levels of leadership responsibilities while attending Schreiner University
The Schreiner Experience Receiving all three Schreiner Experience certificates:
Meaningful Work, Purposeful Lives, and Changing Global Society
Leave with Achievement Completing a certificate or degree at Schreiner University
Today, all degree candidates will receive the Leave with Achievement presidential challenge coin from the President as they cross the stage.
Schreiner University offers a personalized, integrated education that prepares its students for
meaningful work and purposeful lives in a changing global society.
T
Our Rich History
chreiner University was founded in Kerrville, Texas, by Captain Charles Schreiner; a pioneer, rancher, banker, merchant, and
philanthropist. On December 31, 1917, he placed in trust for the establishment of Schreiner Institute 140.25 acres of land and $250,000 to supply facilities for high grade instruction to boys and young men as a preparation for college and university course work. The school was to be “owned, maintained, and controlled by the Synod of Texas of the Presbyterian Church of the United States.”
On December 27, 1921, trustees, appointed by the Synod of Texas, formally received the trust and took steps to erect the first unit of buildings — a classroom building, one dormitory and the president’s home. Under the leadership of James J. Delaney, a faculty was organized and, in September of 1923, the school opened its doors. For a decade, Schreiner offered to boys and young men a preparatory department and the first two years of college. In 1932, coed residents of the
immediate Kerrville vicinity were enrolled as day students. In 1971, women were enrolled as boarding students. Other changes redefined Schreiner’s educational mission. From the beginning, instruction in military training was required for both high school and college students. In 1957, military training was made optional for college students; in 1969, it was discontinued; and two years later, it was also discontinued for high school students.
In 1973, phase-out began for the preparatory department, the name of the school was changed to Schreiner College, and the curriculum was broadened to include career education and life-long learning opportunities. The transition took Schreiner in one decade from a military preparatory school for men to a fully coeducational, four-year, liberal arts college, which received accreditation as a baccalaureate degree-granting institution in 1984. In 2001, the Board of Trustees changed the name to Schreiner University.
Our University Seal
seal has been part of a university since the Middle Ages and is considered one of the more important symbols of the
presidential office as it represents the legal mark of the university’s governing body. The Schreiner University seal is trademarked, licensed, and is used to authenticate official documents such as diplomas and other legal records.
Found at the front entrance of the university and in the center of the Administrative Quadrangle, the official university seal is admired with honor, respect, and reverence as a mark of distinction of Schreiner University’s academic excellence. Because of its symbolic significance, the seal is present at all official university
celebrations. The 5 ft. wide seal on display today was created in 2016. It is coated with a gold metallic finish, and is accentuated with laser-cut acrylic for the decorative trimming and lettering.
