the Lance - Simon Fuller (Rolling out the green carpet) 9 9 7 6 31 I liked the front page treatment with the cutout photo to give the page some depth. Story began with a compelling lede, places the gardening business in larger environmental context, and holds strong community appeal.

the Sou'wester - Danielle Da Silva (Perennial progress) 8 10 8 6 32 The front page presentation and descriptive lede ensure the reader is hooked right away. By placing something as seemingly simple as a garden club in a much larger environmental and social context, the writer does well to elevate the importance and relevance of the story. Quality journalism, of which many of the entries sadly lacked.

Altona Red River Valley Echo (Opening of the Gardens)

18 20 16 14 14 82 Lacked editorial content. Photos could have been layed out more creatively, rather than all in squared boxes.

Brandon Westman Journal (Winter Festival) 25 20 16 8 15 84 Photos with stories would be nice.

Carberry News-Express (When they were young) 0 16 16 15 15 62 A banner or lead page with introduction story explaining what readers are looking at would be nice.

Dauphin Herald - (Festival memories) 22 22 18 13 15 90 Excellent section! I liked the scrapbook feel of it.

Flin Flon Reminder - (Fishing) 18 18 16 14 14 80 More local stories, less canned copy would be nice.

Interlake Enterprise - (Health and wellness) 18 10 17 5 13 63 Love the top banner. Page one story is so short, it would have been better as one column of text, instead of dividing into two. Ads were arranged strangely, leaving weird blank spaces.

Interlake Spectator - (Grad 2015) 20 16 16 12 12 76 Not all ads in section were supporting content. Photos printed dark.

Kivalliq News - (Nunavut Arts and Crafts Festival) 0 23 16 10 6 55 Add preview stories of some of the events, business advertise specials or congratulations type ads.

Stonewall Teulon Tribune - (Memorial service) 23 20 16 14 10 83 More creative ads would increase score. Change up banner from year to year.

Swan Valley Star & Times - (Swan Valley Co-op) 20 20 16 13 10 79 Photos printed poorly. Story broken into smaller stories with headlines on each page instead of flowing through the whole section would make it easier to read.

the Headliner - (Prime times) 17 21 18 13 10 79 Ads relevent to content would increase points.

the Herald - (Prime times) 21 22 18 13 13 87 Nice section, with theme flowing throughout. Good stories & nice ads.

This approach allows him to tell detailed stories in his photos and is the signature of the good photographer.

Selkirk Journal - Brook Jones 19 13 13 8 53 Brook Jones of the Selkirk Journal is this year's winner of the MCNA photographer of the year award. Brook demonstrated a great eye in his photography. His understanding of his subjects and consistency in dramatic and interesting photos in tight and close cropped shots demonstrates a photographer that understands what it takes to get a good photo time after time for his readers. His photo of the release of a snowy owl from the opposite side of the crowd demonstrates he knows where he wants to be before the photos happens. Brook knows how to get in close, how to use light, angle and timing. Great work.
