How does the air bagsupplemental restraint system(SRS) work?
The SRS is designed to activatew hen the vehicle is in a collision, sim ilar to hitting a fixed barrierhead on at 12-24 km /h (8-14 m ph).
The fact that the air bags did notinflate in a collision does not m eanthat som ething is w rong w ith thesystem . Rather, it m eans the forcesw ere not of the type sufficient tocause activation.
The air bags inflate and deflaterapidly upon activation.
A fter air bag deploym ent, it isnorm al to notice a sm oke-like,pow dery residue or sm ell theburned propellant. This m ayconsist of cornstarch, talcumpow der (to lubricate the bag) orsodium com pounds (e.g., baking
soda) that result from thecom bustion process that inflatesthe air bag. Sm all am ounts ofsodium hydroxide m ay be presentw hich m ay irritate the skin andeyes, but none of the residue istoxic.

The diagnostic m odule m onitors itsow n internal circuits and thesupplem ental air bag electricalsystem readiness (including theim pact sensors), the system w iring, the air bag system readiness light, the air bag back up pow er and theair bag ignitors.
If the air bag is inflated, theair bag will not function

The SRS uses a readiness light inthe instrum ent cluster or a chim eto indicate the condition of thesystem . Refer to the Air bagreadinesssection in theInstrumentat ionchapter. Routinem aintenance of the air bag is notrequired.
A difficulty w ith the system isindicated by one or m ore of thefollow ing:
The readiness light w ill eitherflash or stay lit.
The readiness light w ill notillum inate after ignition is turnedon.
A group of five beeps w ill beheard. The tone pattern w illrepeat periodically until theproblem and light are repaired.

CHILDREN AND SAFETYRESTRAINTS
It is extrem ely dangerous toride in a cargo area, inside or
outside of a vehicle. In a collision, people riding in these areas are
m ore likely to be seriously injuredor killed. D o not allow people toride in any area of your vehiclethat is not equipped w ith seatsand safety belts. Be sure everyonein your vehicle is in a seat andusing a safety belt properly.
Safety belts and seats canbecom e hot in a vehicle that
has been closed up in sunny
w eather; they could burn a sm allchild. Check seat covers andbuckles before you place a childanyw here near them .
D o not leave children, unreliable adults, or pets
unattended in your vehicle.
To prevent the risk of injury,
m ake sure children sit w herethey can be properly restrained.
W henever possible, putchildren in one of the rear

Important child restraintprecautions
You are required by law to usesafety restraints for children in theU .S. and Canada. If sm all childrenride in your vehicle (generallychildren w ho are four years old oryounger and w ho w eigh 18 kg[40 lbs] or less), you m ust put themin safety seats m ade especially forchildren. Check your local andstate or provincial law s for specificrequirem ents regarding the safetyof children in your vehicle.

A lw ays follow the instructions andw arnings that com e w ith any infantor child restraint you m ight use.
W hen possible, place children inthe rear seat of your vehicle.
