BASIC IDEAS
Safety in schools refers a general idea that must be followed in order to mimimize, reduce or remove the reasons that may occur as accident/disease and threaten students’s health/life.
WHAT IS ‘’SAFETY’’ IN SCHOOLS?
An unplanned incident that results as injuriy, wound, equipment demage, illness or even death during the training period in the schools.
WHAT IS WORKING ACCIDENT?
Disease caused by:Unsuitable working conditions,Lack of hygiene,Unusage of personal safety equipments,
Be exposed to high level of risky factors : light, heat, radiation, chemicals etc…
WHAT IS WORKING DISEASE?
The situation that threatens student’s health and safety. The danger may be small or huge.
DANGER is divided into 3 main factors:
PERSONAL FACTORSENVIROMENTAL FACTORS TECHNICAL FACTORS
WHAT IS DANGER?
PERSONAL FACTORS : Age, sex, education level, experience, psychological and physiological factors.
ENVIROMENTAL FACTORS : Heat, light, noise, radiation, chemicals, microorganisms etc…
TECHNICAL FACTORS : machines, tools, lack of maintenance, lack of usage knowledge, design of the working area, unusage of personal protective equipments etc…
WHAT ARE THE FACTORS OF DANGER?
3 MAIN REASONS:DANGEREOUS TRAINING/WORKING CONDITIONS,
DANGEREOUS BEHAVIOURSLACK OF CONTROL
WHAT ARE THE REASONS FOR WORKING ACCIDENTS AND DISEASES?
PREVENTIVE CONTROL RIGHT ARRANGEMENT/ORDER APPROPRIATE WORKING AREA DESISGN OF THE MACHINES/TOOLS
WHAT ARE THE PRECAUTIONS ?
BOREDOM TIREDNESS LACK OF KNOWLEDGE OVER-CONFIDENCE LACK OF SAFETY TRAINING UNDICIPLENED BEHAVIOURS PERSONAL PROBLEMS
WHAT ARE THE DANGEREOUS BEHAVIOURS/SITUATIONS?
The connection between the results and the reasons of dangereous behaviours/situations.
WHAT IS RISK?
PHYSICAL RISK FACTORS: Vibration, noise, moisture inadequate air-conditioning/heat/light.
CHEMICAL RISK FACTORS: Toxic gases, chemical vapour, radiation, infra-red lights, acids/bases, chemical powders etc…
WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS?
ELECTRICITY –RELATED RISK FACTORS: Grounding mistakes, lack of periodical control of the devices, broken or worn tools, insulation mistakes, high-low voltage etc…
MECHANICAL RISK FACTORS: Turning/pressing/drilling processes, wrong design of the machines and working areas, insufficient warning systems, lack of stop button etc…
WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS?
BEHAVIOUR-RELATED RISK FACTORS: Not usage of personal safety equipments, over carrying, over stowage, not usage or negligence of warning signs, not reading the user manuals, not controlling the devices/tools periodically etc…
WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS?
WORKING AREA - BASED RISK FACTORS:
Surface, slippery ground, insufficient space, lack of emergency exit and meeting point, irregular training area, stairs, wrong design etc…
WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS?
GENERAL RULES FOR
SAFETY
Every school has to create a commission responsible for health and safety issues in the schools. This commission should consist of the manager, department chiefs, a teacher from each department, a student representative and a parent representative.
SCHOOL HEALTH AND SAFETY COMMISSION (SHSC)
Coordinating health and safety activities in the school.
Identify deficiencies and resolve these problems.
Taking emergency precautions. Organizing education activities and
seminars about health and safety.
DUTIES OF SHSC
Create activities ( painting, banner competitions etc…) that will take students’ attention to the safety issue.
Provide needed personal safety equipments.
Prepare and control safety signs. Educate school staff and students about first aid rules.
SOME EXAMPLES FOR SAFETY RULES
THERE ARE DANGEREOUS BEHAVIOURS AND RISKY SITUATIONS IN VOCATIONAL TRAINING. BE AWARE OF THIS!
YOU ARE NOT AN EXPERT.FOLLOW YOUR TEACHER’S COMMANDS AND DO NOT DO ANYTHING THAT YOU WERE NOT SAID TO DO!
DO NOT WORK WITH MACHINES AND TOOLS THAT YOU ARE NOT EDUCATED ABOUT!
THERE IS NO JOKES IN WORKING AREA. THE RESULTS WILL NOT BE FUNNY!
USE THE APPROPRIATE PERSONAL SAFETY EQUIPMENT. HUMAN BODY DOES NOT HAVE REPLACEMENT PARTS!
DO NOT HESITATE TO ASK FOR HELP. DO NOT TRY TO BE A HERO!
OBEY THE SAFETY RULES. THESE ARE FOR YOUR HEALTH AND SAFETY!
WATCH THE WARNING SIGNS. THEY ARE FOR YOU!
CONTROL THE MACHINES AND THE TOOLS PERIODICALLY.
CARE ABOUT YOUR OWN PERSONAL HYGIENE!
CONTROL LISTS
EVERY INSTUTION HAS TO PREPARE CONTROL LISTS
FOR:
COMMON AREAS OF USAGE EMERGENCY PLAN WORKSHOPS CANTEEN/CAFETERIA GENERAL CLEANING CLASSROOMS CORRIDORS SCHOOL VEHICLES/SERVICES MEETING HALL OUT-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
MUSIC ROOM ART ROOM WET ROOMS ( TOILETS AND
BATHROOMS) SPORT SALOONS SWIMMING POOL BOILER ROOM ERGONOMICS-PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES ERGONOMICS-OFFICE ACTIVITIES WORK STATION/COUNTER OBJECTS WITH DANGEREOUS SURFACE
OBJECTS MOVING WITHOUT CONTROL CONTACT WITH COLD/HOT OBJECTS LIGHTING AIR CONDITIONING WORKING IN HIGH PLACES MACHINE’S MOVING PARTS HAND TOOLS AND EQUIPMENTS EQUIPMENTS WITH ELECTRICITY INSTALLATIONS WITH PRESSURE GAS TUBES WITH PRESSURE
CRANES AND LIFTING MACHINES EMERGENCY EXIT AND MEETING POINT FIRE AND EXPLOSION NOISE AND VIBRATION CHEMICAL SECURITY CHEMICAL WASTES PHYSICS LABORATORY CHEMISTRY LABORATORY BIOLOGY LABORATORY COMPUTER LABORATORY
Is there a first-aid kit in the workshop?
Are the materials in the first-aid kit sufficient?
Is there any student who doesn’t use personal safety equipment?
Is there an exit plan for emergancy situations?
Are there sufficient warning signs?
SOME QUESTIONS THAT MAY BE ASKED IN THE CONTROL LISTS
Are there any dangereous materials?
Is the workshop’s physical condition suitable for training/working period?
Is the workshop design appropriate for training?
Is there a storage room for keeping hand-tools?
etc…
