12 "HISTORY. OF CANTON BAPTIST CHURCH) ,J~ WI !{l, _

Martin L. Dorton, the eighteenth pastor, served three years with mod-erate success. The Canton members are like sheep. They can be lead but not driven. Some thought he wanted to exercise too much authority over the church. So his resignation was gladly accepted. But be it said to his' honor that during his twelve years at West Albemarle Baptist Church he was very successful.

The twentieth pastor, Z. W. Rotan, was a good singer and preached well for a young man. In less than a year after he came to Canton, a call to a more promising church was extended to him; so he resigned.

Columbus Croson Honeycutt, 21st pastor, preached practical sermons and enjoyed helping in the song service. When he began at Canton Church, there were two factions in the church, but time, his kindness, prayers and sermons almost, if not entirely, healed the trouble..

He fosters education. Five of hi;: children receive·d college degrees. His son Everette is a Baptist preacher and is pastor of Centerview Baptist Church', Stanly Association. Most of his pastorates have been rather long-nine years at Canton and at Plyler seventeen years. His success as a minister has been partly due to his loyal wife, Bessie May, whom eve:ryone loved. This_ was shown by the large crowd that attended her funeral. · · ·

Though 72 he is still i'n the harness with his second wife, Lula, also a faithful helper in church work! Occasionally he assists in funerals here.

On January 1, 1947 I took up the work as pastor of Canton Church. I am glad to say a . word .of greeting to every member of the church. I appreciate the honor of being your humble pastor as my predecessors were noble leaders. We owe them a heavy debt of gratitude. It is my aim to the best of my ability, time and energy to carry on the good work begun by them. I appreciate all the cooperation.

_ It is my hope that the work of the Kingdom may come in such a way that we will know what Christ m eant when he prayed that his followers •·might be one in him".

Faithfully yours, 0. H. BOLCH, Pastor.

Rev. Bolch takes a great delight in visiting the sick and those in need of financial help. He often requests the church to help needy families to which the members respond cheerfully. He . could aptly be called a "welfare pastor". He is to be commended for having no "pets" in the church-treats a ll the same. He is now moderator of the Stanly Baptist Association.

His wife Ruby is a faithful helper in church activities. She teaches the old ladies' Sunday school class and is church organist. Their only child, Oscar H. Bolch, Jr., is a senior in Endy High School.

They live in the parsonage near the church house.

For many years at this church Rev. William Bangle Almond, famil-iarly known as "Uncle Bill", was both organist, choir leader, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher and now teaches when his health permits.
