Introduction

Awaken is an invitation for you to fast and pray over the course of the next three weeks for a revival of God’s presence and work in your own life and church. The goal of that revival in you is for God’s glory to be revealed to a watching world that needs to know Him. When large numbers or high percentages of people are transformed by the gospel of Jesus Christ, spiritual awakening is the result. Communities change. Cities change. And yes, nations can change. Spiritual awakening is what we need in our nation, but revival of God’s people is a spiritual prerequisite.

Each day in this prayer guide, I’ve included one or more Scriptures to get your focus on God and what He has to say to us through His Word. I’ve shared some thoughts with you that I pray will be a challenge or encouragement to you. I’m praying that God will increase your own hunger for His presence and power to such a degree that you will make every adjustment required to experience revival and awakening. I’m praying that God will increase your faith to believe Him for all He wants to do where you are. Don’t focus attention on how bad things may be around you. Get your eyes fixed on Jesus and what He can do. He is our Hope.

I’ve given you some suggestions for prayer. Prayer is a relationship with the Creator of the universe. Jesus wants you to spend time getting to know Him and His purposes and His ways as you pray. He wants to speak to you about your life and your part in His plan for world redemption. You will notice that each day I’m asking you to talk to the Lord about what you should do to apply what you are hearing from Him. Don’t be a hearer only.

Fasting may be a new discipline for you. If so, do some research or ask someone about fasting. That may include denying yourself food, or it could include a fast from television or media for a season. Fasting heightens your hunger for God and your focus on Him, but it also provides you with additional time to pray. Fasting and prayer go together.

In Christ,Pastor Jimmy Taylor

Day 1 – August 12

Listening and Praying

God’s Word for todayRevelation 3:14-22

The spiritual discipline of listening is one of the hardest Christian disciplines.

What does God’s voice sound like? It’s a still, small voice. It’s can be hard to hear because we expect a loud shout.

Hearing God’s voice requires a listening heart and a listening posture. Listening requires silence and stillness. Silence asks me to close my mouth and open my heart. Listening requires quieting distractions. You can do that by praying and reading God’s Word.

To begin 21 days of prayer, ask ‘What is on your heart God?’ After you ask, listen for God’s still, small voice. Write down what God is telling you.

In verse 20 of the passage you read today, Jesus tells us that He is knocking. If anyone hears His voice and responds God will do His work. God is at work 24/7. He is actively knocking. Open the door and let God speak. He wants to fellowship with you. Each morning find you a quiet place, Bible, pen and pad and “open the door and fellowship with God”.

It’s Time to Pray:1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. In this passage, God despises lukewarm. Are there areas in your life where you are lukewarm in your walk?

3. What actions steps can you take today to have a “hot” relationship with God?

Day 2 – August 13

Trusting God

God’s Word for todayProverbs 3:5-6

What does the Bible say about trusting God? One of the most prominent themes of scripture is to trust in God, especially in times when it becomes difficult to do so. While we will experience unexpected hardships in our lives, it is crucial for our spiritual health that we continue trusting God as the Bible encourages. Although not an easy feat, trusting in God could save you from an irredeemable decision you may make in anger or sadness that could ruin your life.

It is the Lord in whom we are to trust, not ourselves or our plans and certainly not the world’s wisdom. We trust in the Lord because He and He alone is truly trustworthy. His Word is trustworthy (Psalm 93:5, 111:7, Titus 1:9), His nature is faithful and true (Deuteronomy 7:9, Psalm 25:10, 145:13, 146:6), and His plans for us are perfect and purposeful (Isaiah 46:10, Jeremiah 29:11).

Trusting the Lord in good times will help carry us through tough times. We may be knocked down, we may stumble, or we may fall into sin, but “though he stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand” (Psalm 37:24).

It’s Time to Pray:1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. In today’s passage, God’s word tells us that if we trust Him, He will make our paths straight. What a great God we have. In what areas of your life do you need God to “straighten” your path?

3. What action steps can you take today to develop your trust in God?

Day 3 – August 14

Obedience to God

God’s Word for today1 John 3:23-24, 5:2-3

From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible has a lot to say about obedience. In the story of the 10 Commandments, we see just how important the concept of obedience is to God. Deuteronomy 11:26-28 says: “Obey and you will be blessed. Disobey and you will be cursed. In the New Testament, we learn through the example of Jesus that believers are called to a life of obedience.

The general concept of obedience both in the Old and New Testament relates to hearing, trusting and obeying God. One of the Greek terms for obedience conveys the idea of positioning oneself under someone by submitting to their authority. Another Greek word for obey in the New Testament means “to trust”.

Obedience and following God go hand in hand. You cannot have a close, loving relationship with God without obedience.

“Tell God you are ready to be offered, and God will prove Himself to be all you ever dreamed He would be.”  ― Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest

It’s Time to Pray:1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. In today’s passage, John connects keeping His commandments and abiding in God. Abide means to stay or live somewhere. How are you ‘abiding in Christ’?

3. What action steps can you take to develop your obedience to God?

Day 4 – August 15

Next Step

God’s Word for today2 Corinthians 5:11-6:2

Max Lucado, one of the great Christian authors of our day, wrote the following in his book “Just Like Jesus”,‘God loves you just the way you are, but He refuses to leave you there. He wants you to be just like Jesus.’It’s a simple, easy to understand statement.

No doubt God loves each of us. Scripture is full of such expressions. It is easy to talk about God’s love. It is comforting and reassuring. God’s love is easy to embrace. Unfortunately, far too often we neglect the second half of Lucado’s statement. We are not nearly as comfortable with change. It can be difficult to conform our lives, not to the world, but rather to the leadership of the Holy Spirit and obedience to the Word of God. But God loves us far too much to leave us where He found us at salvation. Salvation is simply the first step, albeit the most important step, in a journey that will last a lifetime. God wants you to continue to take the next step in your relationship with Him.

It’s Time to Pray:1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. In the passage today, Paul writes that we are God’s “new creation”. How? Because he “reconciled us to himself”. In your prayer time, thank God for His reconciliation.

3. What action steps do you need to take today to allow God to keep sharpening you to be like Jesus?

Day 5 – August 16

Circumstances

God’s Word for todayMatthew 14:22-33

This well-known passage in Matt. 14 shows us a lot about Peter. He often speaks first and thinks second. We all have those moments in our lives. How many of us can identify with Peter? He was always outspoken and doing things that he shouldn’t. Also, he was someone who was willing to take risks.

Peter’s confidence of walking on water tells about his faith in Jesus. None of the other disciples walked on water, only Peter.

What did you think made Peter sink? Was it because his focus shifted from Jesus to his circumstances? Maybe because his fear was greater than his faith. The right answer is probably a lot of both.

The one thing we all admire about Peter is that at least he stepped out there. You know all of the other disciples wish they had the faith to step out like Peter.

Often, we are most like the disciples. We like the safety net of the boat. We are comfortable there. What if Jesus is calling us to step out of our boat onto the waves? Are we willing to do it, or do we want to stay where our comfort is?

It’s time to pray1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. Is God asking you to stretch your comfort zone and get out of the boat you are in?

3. What action steps do you need to take to follow Jesus without fear?

Day 6 – August 17

The Lord’s Day

God’s Word for todayHebrews 10:19-25

Recently, Randy Seale, one of our Bible teachers, challenged us to change the name of Sunday to the Lord’s Day. Sunday is supposed to be a day where we prioritize the Lord and rest. We are called to worship on the Lord’s day. It should be a day we share with our brothers and sisters to worship together. We should make every effort to be there with our church family on the Lord’s day.

The Lord’s day is a day we shouldn’t just show up to “get”, we should show up to “give”.

The Lord’s day (tomorrow) this week will be filled with worship of our Lord, and great teaching in a message from Pastor Roy. God is in the business of changing people. He has changed all of us. Plan on praying, attending and serving on the ‘Lord’s Day’.

Tomorrow, the Lord’s day, many people will hear how to change by giving their life to Jesus and begin to let Him do His work. 2 Peter 3:9 says “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you,[a] not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”

It’s Time to pray1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. Please pray for Sunday services. Pray God will draw people to Him.

3. What action steps can you take today to make sure the ‘Lord’s Day’ is all it can be?

Day 7 – August 18

Baggage

God’s Word for today1 Samuel 10:9-24

When God led Samuel to appoint Saul as king, the people were thrilled to finally have a king like the other nations had. Samuel warned the people what a King would require from them. A king would take your sons and your daughters and make them serve him. A king will also take your horses and chariots. He will take the best of your cattle and flocks.

The people refused to listen to Samuel and wanted a king. So a king they got. Sure enough Samuel was right about everything.

The first king of Israel was named Saul. When Samuel anointed Saul, Saul was afraid and overwhelmed. In fact, the first time Saul was introduced as King, they couldn’t find him. Eventually he was found “hiding in his baggage” according to verse 23 in our reading. Why was he hiding? Fear!

In our lives we have many obstacles. God wants us to face them head on. He wants us to face our fears and not hide in “our baggage”.

Why do we sometimes let fear and frustration get the best of us? Is it a lack of trust in God? A lack of faith in God? Something from our past (baggage)?

It’s Time to Pray1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. Is it time to look deep inside at your baggage? Is there something holding you back from taking your next step?

3. What action steps do you need to take to face your giants?

Day 8 – August 19

Why Pray?

God’s Word for todayJohn 17

CS Lewis was the author of the widely read children’s books, The Narnia Chronicles, as well as many novels for grown-ups and books on issues surrounding the Christian faith. The movie Shadowlands (directed by Richard Attenborough and produced in 1993) tells Lewis’ story, focusing in particular on his relationship with his wife, Joy Gresham. Gresham and Lewis meet while Lewis was at Oxford University. After Joy is diagnosed with cancer the couple marry. The movie invites us to witness their love, their pain, their grief, their struggles with faith and God. (Spoiler Alert) Eventually Joy dies.At one point in the story a friend says to Lewis, “Christopher can scoff, Jack, but I know how hard you’ve been praying; and now God is answering your prayers.”Lewis replies “That’s not why I pray, Harry. I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time, waking and sleeping. It doesn’t change God, it changes me.” CS Lewis

We don’t just pray to get God to do our bidding, we pray to show our love for God and acknowledge our dependence on Him. We keep praying until the answer comes!

It’s Time to Pray1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. What an honor to know Jesus prayed for us. In the passage today, Jesus prayed for His future followers. Pray for people in your reach that need Jesus.

3. What action steps do you need to take to strengthen your prayer life?

Day 9 – August 20

AWANA

God’s Word for today2 Tim. 2:15

Children’s ministry at Westland has always been a big priority. Over the years, many children have prayed to received Christ and have also taken steps to be disciples. Christi Richards leads our children’s ministry. Her heart and leadership at Westland is a blessing to us. She attended Westland as a child and also attended AWANA.

The name AWANA is an acronym for “Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed”, which comes from 2 Tim. 2:15.

AWANA club has had a great impact at Westland. The focus on reaching kids for Christ and showing kids to memorize scripture in a fun way pays dividends in each student’s life for their whole life. Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

We have always had great leadership and great commanders. This year is no exception. Bob Vauthrin and his daughter, Michelle Westermeyer, are co-commanders. They are continuing on the success of this great ministry.

As we embark on another year of AWANA, let’s join in prayer for the leaders and kids in this vital ministry at Westland.

It’s Time to Pray1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. Pray for the children’s ministry and the AWANA ministry. Pray for the leaders and the continued success of our children’s ministry.

3. What action steps can you do today to encourage the leaders of our children’s ministry?

Page 14: A 21 DAY PRAYER GUIDE & JOURNAL - westlandbaptistchurch.org  · Web viewSpiritual awakening is what we need in our nation, but revival of God’s people is a spiritual prerequisite

Day 10 – August 21

Youth

God’s Word for todayMatthew 28:19-20

Through our youth ministry at Westland, we have seen numerous students become followers of Jesus. Some have accepted the call of God on their lives to a life of ministry.

According to home.snu.edu, a survey by the International Bible Society indicated that 83% of all Christians make their commitment to Jesus between the ages of 4 and 14. That’s a big number. We have seen those stats lived out here at Westland. That is why we invest heavily into our children and youth ministry.

What can you do to help? Always pray and support those ministering to the children and teenagers.

Here are ways to pray for this vital ministry at Westland.1. Pray that students will grow in their walk with the Lord.2. Pray students will see the need to reach out to their friends.3. Pray for a softening of hearts towards the Lord for teens.4. Pray for wisdom for TJ Richards and our youth leaders.5. Pray for parents of teens to encourage their kids in their walk.

It’s Time to Pray1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. As we read the Great Commission in our passage today, how can we reach out to those around us to further God’s kingdom?

3. What action steps can you take today to encourage the leaders of our youth ministry?

Day 11 – August 22

Music and Worship

God’s Word for todayActs 16

When people talk about music, the place where the conversation usually begins (and often ends) is about preference. Did you like that song, or not? And, of course, we all have musical styles and songs that we really like. It is common to try to encourage a worship leader by saying, “Hey, I really like that new song!” But when talking about worship, our musical preferences are at least peripheral, if not irrelevant.

Worship is not about gratifying our personal preferences, but about drawing our hearts to Jesus (John 4:24). That’s what we should be on the lookout for in our services. Nevertheless, we will not always agree on what styles, songs, or sounds will do this best.

The greatest joy of a worship leader is when people see more of Christ, when people’s burdens are lifted by Christ, when their hope and joy in Christ begins to rise. The best way to encourage your worship leaders is to show them Christ, and often, this can be done by showing them how Christ is working through their ministry.

Our worship leaders give many hours a week preparing to lead us in worship of Jesus. Take time to encourage Jeremy Howard, the worship team, and tech team.

It’s Time to Pray1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. In vs. 25 of our passage reading, Paul and Silas sang hymns when in prison. Worship encourages our souls. Sing your favorite song during your quiet time this morning.

3. What action steps can you do today to encourage the leaders of our music ministry?

Day 12 – August 23

Westland Bible Fellowships

God’s Word for todayJames 3

Our Bible Fellowships are the backbone of our church. Whether Children, Adult or Home Bible Fellowships, the leaders have a big calling.

The teacher’s responsibilities are great. James 3:1 says, “Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.” He or she must know that portion of God’s word he is attempting to proclaim. He has to be aware of his listeners’ needs and their level of comprehension.

The best advice one who would teach others can receive is found in 1 Tim. 4:16 where the apostle Paul told Timothy to “take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.” One who teaches must first apply the word to themselves.

Any great Bible teacher knows that the greatest teacher is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit’s job is to show us the meaning of God’s Word and how it applies to our lives. He will help you see in the Bible what you wouldn’t see otherwise. If you don’t have the Holy Spirit, you’re going to miss a lot in the Bible.

It's Time to pray1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. James 3 is the go-to passage about our speech and taming the tongue. As you read it ask God to guide your speech and talk.

3. What action steps can you take today to allow God to help you guard your words?

Day 13 – August 24

Westland Pastors

God’s Word for todayEphesians 6:19, Colossians 4:3

I would encourage you to remember that because of the calling on pastors’ lives, they are even more vulnerable and susceptible to tests, temptation, and burn-out. We, as the members, should always be interceding on behalf of our leadership and covering them in prayer. We should be watchful for and with them.

In our church, our pastors give so much of themselves to the body. They give up their time outside of church to counsel and mentor people in their walk with God. They give up their personal resources in order to make sure that the church members have their needs met. They also spend time and effort, sacrificially as they pray and fast in order to teach the unadulterated word of God with power and anointing.

Our pastors are flesh and blood. They are people, just like the rest of us. They face many of the same problems and struggles that we face, yet, they are tasked to rise above and to live their lives at a higher standard than the rest of the church.

Let’s pray for our pastors on a consistent basis. Let’s cover them fervently. We do not know the battles that they face. Many pastors do not share half the things they go through. Let’s give them grace, honor, and support through prayer whenever we can!

It’s Time to pray1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. Pastors need for you to pray for unity, good friends, their families, rest and for the gospel to be forefront.

3. What action steps can you take today to allow God to help you encourage your pastors?

Day 14 – August 25

God Is On Our Side

God’s Word for today1 Samuel 17

The story of David and Goliath is a very well-known story. There are so many aspects of this story that we can apply to our own lives. However, the main focus of this story always leads to our admiring David’s spiritual strength. David walks through the battle lines of the Israeli army with such a confidence. He doesn’t understand why the soldiers won’t fight this guy who “... defiles the armies of the living God”.

Oh, what I would do to have the kind of strength to stand before a giant with just a sling and a stone. To walk as a spiritual victor has great appeal for followers of Jesus.

We are all faced with our own giants in life. The Israelites were helpless against Goliath. They were afraid, they had no plan. They allowed themselves to be intimidated and they had forgotten that God was on their side.

Why did David think he could fight and beat Goliath? His confidence comes from his experiences where he has seen God working.

Have we forgotten how to face our giants? We are not to be afraid; God has a plan; we have no reason to be intimidated because God is on our side.

It’s time to pray1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. List the giants in your life that you need to face. Remember, God is on your side.

3. What action steps do you need to take to face your giants?

Day 15 – August 26

Schools

God’s Word for todayDeuteronomy 6:4-9

Our district has great schools, which is no secret. That is why so many people move here. Our schools are great because we have great leadership.

In KISD, there are 42 elementary schools, 16 junior high schools and 10 high schools. There are close to 80,000 students in KISD.

There are two schools that meet on our Westland campus, Berean Christian Academy, K-7, and ECEC, a preschool.

As we are fresh into the new school year, please pray for our students, teachers, other employees and administrators in the district. Pray for:God’s protection from evil entering the schools.God’s spirit to move in the campuses and that we see many students follow Jesus. Godly wisdom for the leaders in our district from our school board all the way down to the classrooms. Our school bus drivers and others watching over our kids. Children to avoid temptation and love God with all their hearts.Great learning environments in every class.Strong Godly leadership in our schools.

It’s Time to Pray1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. In the passage reading today, the commands are put on adults to teach “the children diligently in your house, when you walk, when you lie down and when you rise”. How can you help that happen?

3. What action steps can you take today make sure the ‘Lord’s Day’ is all it can be?

Day 16 – August 27

Revival

God’s Word for today2 Chronicles 7:13-14

“Revival is the visitation of God, which brings to life Christians who have been sleeping and restores a deep sense of God’s near presence and holiness. Thence springs a vivid sense of sin and a profound exercise of heart in repentance, praise, and love, with an evangelistic outflow.”

J.I. Packer

“Revival is a divinely initiated work in which God’s people pray, repent of their sin, and return to a holy, Spirit-filled, obedient, love-relationship with God.”

Henry Blackaby

“Revival is a renewed conviction of sin and repentance, followed by an intense desire to live in obedience to God. It is giving up one’s will to God in deep humility.”

Charles Finney

“Revival begins when you draw a circle around yourself and make sure everything in that circle is right with God.”

Anne Graham Lotz

“If we want revivals, we must revive our reverence for the Word of God.”Charles Spurgeon

It’s Time to pray1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. Is God speaking to you about revival in your heart? Write down what God is telling you.

3. What action steps can you take today for revival?

Day 17 – August 28

First Love

God’s Word for todayHebrews 13Philippians 4:13

The story is told about an old farm couple who were driving along in their pickup when the wife said, “We never sit all snuggled up in the truck like we used to.” The husband looked at her and said, “I haven't moved.”

When we discover as a church or as individual believers that we aren't as close to God as we once were, understand this, He didn’t move, we did.

It is comforting to know that we can always trust God because He is always there. He is not a moving target. He is the same yesterday, today and forever.

In Hebrews 13:7, the author encourages us to have a mentor or role model as someone to imitate. Look at someone who is mature in their faith that loves Jesus with all their heart. Imitate what they do to stay close to Him. Always remember that God is still there. Sometimes we leave the closeness to Him. He hasn’t left, He wants us back.

It’s Time to pray1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. Revival and first love go together. Draw close to God. Is there someone that can be your mentor?

3. What action steps can you take today to stay close to Him?

Faithful Walk

God’s Word for todayPsalm 51:10-15 The Message

Soak me in your laundry and I’ll come out clean,    scrub me and I’ll have a snow-white life.Tune me in to foot-tapping songs,    set these once-broken bones to dancing.Don’t look too close for blemishes,    give me a clean bill of health.God, make a fresh start in me,    shape a Genesis week from the chaos of my life.Don’t throw me out with the trash,    or fail to breathe holiness in me.Bring me back from gray exile,    put a fresh wind in my sails!Give me a job teaching rebels your ways    so the lost can find their way home.Commute my death sentence, God, my salvation God,    and I’ll sing anthems to your life-giving ways.Unbutton my lips, dear God;    I’ll let loose with your praise.

Psalm 51 is a great cry out to God for holiness. Our lives can get so busy and messy. Busyness can be used by the evil one to keep our thoughts and prayers away from God. Staying close to God is what our lives are to be about.

It’s Time to pray1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. Pray for God to show you the schedule He wants for you.

3. What action steps can you take today to have a faithful walk?

Day 19 – August 30

Daily Prayer

God’s Word for todayJeremiah 33:3, James 4:8, 1 Chronicles 16:34, Psalm 9:1

Why is daily prayer so vital to a life of a follower of Jesus? Daily prayer gives us an opportunity to share all aspects of one’s life with God. Life’s circumstances change on a daily basis. In fact, things can go from good to bad to worse in a very short time. God calls us to bring our concerns to Him for disposition and potential blessing. He also calls us to share our joys and triumphs with Him. In fact, Jeremiah 33:3 states, “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” God wants us to call on Him so that He can answer our prayers. He also wants to share with us incredible blessings that we might otherwise have missed had we not reached out to Him through prayer. And finally, James 4:8 tells us to “draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” God wants us to be close to Him at all times.

Daily prayer gives us the chance to express gratitude for the things in life that He provides. It is no secret that we must give thanks to the Lord for all the things that He provides and all of the things He does on our behalf. His goodness and lovingkindness to us should be recognized on a daily basis. In 1 Chronicles 16:34, we are commanded to “give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” The psalmist tells us in Psalm 9:1, “I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonders.” We pray on a daily basis to acknowledge His faithfulness and His abundant provision in our daily lives.

It’s Time to pray1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. Showing gratitude for God is a command of our Father in heaven. As we get close to finishing 21 Days of Prayer, commit to showing God gratitude daily. List things you are grateful for.

3. What action steps can you take today to connect daily with God?

Day 20 – August 31

Continue Praying

God’s Word for todayPsalm 32:5, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Daily prayer provides the platform for confessing our sin and asking for help repenting of that sin. Let’s face it, we all sin daily whether we know it or not. So as followers of Jesus Christ, what must we do? Scripture makes it very clear: “Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the LORD’— and you forgave the guilt of my sin” (Psalm 32:5). Tell God what He already knows and do it on a daily basis. Daily prayer time is a great place to unburden one’s self from the debilitating effects of sin. So often Christians walk around with unconfessed sin that hinders our personal relationship with Jesus Christ, when we should humbly submit ourselves and ask for forgiveness in prayer. Another important element of daily prayer is asking God for the strength to repent of our sins. Only God can help us turn from our sins, and, for this to be so, He needs to hear our plea to repent.

Daily prayer is an act of worship and obedience. Perhaps no other verse better summarizes why we should pray on a daily basis than 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18: “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.” It’s God’s will for His children to rejoice in Him, to pray to Him and give thanks to Him. To pray without ceasing simply means that we should make prayer a regular habit and never stop doing so. Prayer also is an act of worship because by praying to Him we are showing Him how much we adore Him. Daily prayer is also an act of obedience that brings joy to the Lord to see His children following His commands.

It’s Time to pray1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. Confessing our sin and repenting will bring us close to God. Challenge: make this a daily act of obedience.

3. What action steps can you take today to continue connecting daily with God?

Day 21 – September 1

Daily Habit of Prayer

God’s Word for todayIsaiah 46:9-10, Daniel 4:17, 1 Chronicles 29:11

Daily prayer is a way to acknowledge who is really in control of our lives. As Christians, we know who is really in control. God is sovereign. Nothing happens without God knowing about it (Isaiah 46:9-10; Daniel 4:17). Because He is sovereign over all, He deserves our worship and praise. “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all” (1 Chronicles 29:11). God is our great King and as such He controls every aspect of our lives. Each day we should acknowledge His proper place in our lives humbly and with a reverence reserved for such a great and awesome King.

Whether one is a new believer or an established one, prayer should always be considered as THE best way to speak to God. Imagine not speaking to a loved one or a close friend. How long would the relationship last? Daily prayer with God is daily fellowship with our heavenly Father. It is truly amazing that God would want to have fellowship with us at all. In fact, the psalmist asks, “What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?” (Psalm 8:4). Daily prayer is a good way to understand this incredible truth and the marvelous privilege God has given us.

It's Time to pray1. Ask, ‘what is on your heart today God?’ Write down what you feel God is

telling you that is on His heart.

2. God is in control; the question is are we acknowledging it? How can you acknowledge God’s sovereignty daily?

3. What action steps can you take today to continue connecting daily with God?
