ACADEMIC PROCESSIONAL & CEREMONIAL CUSTOMS

The pageantry of commencement is rooted in traditions that are centuries old. The following information isdesigned to assist you in understanding the significance of these ceremonial rites.

ProcessionalThe academic processional is anofficial prelude to the commence-ment ceremony. The Universitymarshal leads the procession, bearing the University Mace, which represents the authority ofboth the University and of thestate. Following the Universitymarshal are the members of theplatform party including trustees, recipient(s) of honorary degrees, and the president of the University, who wears a medallion withinscriptions representing thehistory of the state and theUniversity. Next come themembers of the faculty followedby the degree candidates.

The marching order of candidatescustomarily reflects the historicalorder in which the various collegesor schools of the University wereestablished. Led by marshals, thecandidates for degrees march inwith their respective colleges.

Academic AttireThe academic regalia worn atcommencement is of medievalorigin. The scholars of Bologna,Paris, Oxford, Cambridge, andHeidelberg dressed in a manner to distinguish themselves from themerchants and other townsmen. When the universities first cameinto being in the 11th century,“learned clerks” robed themselvesin gowns, caps, and hoods, thussignifying the distinction between“town” and “gown.” As additionaluniversities came into being, theirfaculties adopted distinctive formsof the gown and hood for bachelors, masters, and doctors.

These customs are reflected intoday’s academic attire. In Europe,a professor generally wears the

type of garment customary in the university where he or she islecturing. In the United States, however, professors wear the gownand hood of the university wherethey earned their highest degree. All commencement ceremonyparticipants at The University ofAkron are attired in the appropriateacademic apparel. Universitymarshals are distinguished by their blue and gold robes andElizabethan caps.

Caps and TasselsThe cap, also called the mortar-board, may have been derivedfrom the squarish cap worn by themasons of the Middle Ages, orperhaps was suggested by theshape of the books which occupiedso much of the scholar’s time. Inthe United States, the cap is alwaysflat and square in shape. In Europe, one sometimes sees caps of othervarieties. Attached to a button atop the mortarboard is a tassel;associate’s are often silver in color;bachelor’s and master’s are black or of a color appropriate to thecollege from which the candidate is being graduated; and doctor’s are usually golden.

GownsOriginally, the gown may simplyhave been a type of overcoat toprotect the teacher from the cold in unheated buildings. The cut or style appears to derive fromecclesiastical attire and most oftenis black. The associate’s andbachelor’s gowns generally have a closed front and open sleeves. The master’s gown more often haslong, closed sleeves, from whichthe arms extend through a slit atthe wrist. The doctor’s gown is

faced down the front with velvetpanels and has bell-shaped sleevesadorned with three velvet bars.

HoodsA triangular fold of cloth worn overthe back of the gown, the hood isfaced with colors which denote thefield of study represented by thewearer’s degree. The colors of thelining indicate the college or aca-demic discipline in which thedegree is granted. Recipients ofthe doctor of philosophy degreewear royal blue hoods, and theircaps feature golden tassels. Thosewho have earned the doctor ofeducation degree wear light bluehoods and tassels.

ColorsThe various colleges and academicdisciplines of The University ofAkron are represented by thefollowing hood and tassel colors:

White Arts and Sciences

Drab Business

Silver Summit College,Associate’s

Black Summit College,Bachelor’s

Light Blue Education

Orange Engineering

Dark Brown Fine and Applied Arts

BannersThe impressive backdrop for theceremony consists of the bannersof the eleven colleges and theGraduate School. Each bannerbears the name, founding date, andtraditional colors of the college itrepresents. Banners were first insti-tuted at The University of Akron in the spring of 1995.

The University Seal and the Presidential MedallionA seal serves to confirm, ratify, orsecure an emblem, symbol, or word that is used to certify a signature or authenticate a document. The use of official seals dates back to the NormanConquest in 1066. During the next century, seals were usedthroughout England to authen-ticate documents. Persons of rank had unique seals befittingtheir status. Most seals werecircular or oval-shaped and boreheraldic designs embossed on their faces.

The use of seals became part of academic tradition in themedieval university and continuedto the present. The University of Akron, for example, displays its seal on diplomas presented to its graduates.

The coat of arms shown on theUniversity’s seal includes an openbook and quill, representative ofthe University’s original liberal artscurriculum. A lamp of learningshown against a city skyline depictsthe University’s metropolitan set-ting. Three diagonal bars representthe private, municipal, and statestages of the University’s history. The phoenix, a mythical bird thatis consumed by fire and rises fromits ashes to achieve greater glory, isa tribute to the University’s rebirthfollowing the devastating fire of1899. The seal also displays theoriginal Buchtel College motto,Fiat Lux (let there be light).

The University’s current Presi-dential Medallion, as designed inthe year 2000 by renowned artistDon Drumm, consists of theUniversity seal, set in a necklace ofpewter. Originally, the PresidentialMedallion was presented by theAlumni Association in 1970, com-memorating the University’s cen-tennial. The medallion is a symbolof the authority of the president, asbestowed by the Board ofTrustees, that traditionally is wornby the president on importantceremonial occasions.

The Ceremonial MaceThe Ceremonial Mace was pre-sented to The University of Akronby the Alumni Association onFounders Day 1970, in recognitionof the University’s founding 100years earlier as Buchtel College.

Since ancient times, maces havebeen symbols of authority for many academic and governmentalbodies. The University of Akron’sCeremonial Mace is carried by theUniversity marshal at all formalacademic occasions.

The most distinguishing feature of the Ceremonial Mace is the rising phoenix. A mythical bird that rose anew from its ashes to achieve even greater glory, the phoenix is a fitting symbol for the University whose predecessor, Buchtel College, suffered a disastrous fire in 1899 and was rebuilt through the generous support of alumni andthe community.

John A. Fink will receive the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

JOHN A. FINK, M.D.

Dr. John A. Fink, respected vascular surgeon and esteemed leader in the Akron community, served on The University of Akron Board of Trustees from 1997 through 2006 and is recognized as oneof the architects and principal leaders of the University’s New Landscape for Learning campus enhance-ment program.

After earning a bachelor of science degree in microbiology in 1977 and a medical degree in 1980from The Ohio State University, Dr. Fink rose through his profession to become a highly regarded mem-ber of Northeast Ohio’s medical community. He maintains a private practice as a vascular surgeon withAkron Vascular Associates; is an active staff member with the Department of Surgery at Summa HealthSystems; and is affiliated with Akron Children’s Hospital and Akron General Medical Center. Dr. Finkpasses on knowledge to new generations of physicians through his work as an Associate Professor ofSurgery at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. He has served as Chairman of theHospital Board of Summa Health System and in multiple positions for Summa, including Chief ofMedical Staff and Secretary/Treasurer of the Medical Staff.

In 1997 Ohio Governor George Voinovich appointed Dr. Fink to The University of Akron’sBoard of Trustees. In the ensuing years, he has served the Board and the University with distinction ina variety of roles, including Chairman of the Board from 2005-06; chairman of the Facilities Planning andOversight Committee, and the Personnel and Compensation Committee; member of the CollectiveBargaining Committee, the Educational Policy/Student Affairs Committee, the Finance, Fiscal Policyand Investment Committee, the Nominating Committee, the Personnel and CompensationCommittee, the Rules Committee, and as an Ex-Officio Member of the Planning and BudgetCommittee.

Dr. Fink’s most lasting legacy at the University is the campus transformation that he initiatedand oversaw. Shortly after his appointment to UA’s Board in 1997, Dr. Fink was asked to chair theFacilities Planning and Oversight Committee. He and fellow trustees visited state universities, com-missioned a study of the campus’ needs, and met with administrators and representatives of the faculty, students and city. From this extensive database, trustees and University administrators created the basicblueprint for the campus enhancement program. Ground was broken in 2000 and in just five years, phaseone of the New Landscape for Learning program was completed. The campus blossomed with nine newbuildings, 14 major renovations, more than 50 other capital improvements, 30 acres of new green space, and thousands of new trees, shrubs and other plantings. The success of this first phase is being contin-ued as additional structures and features are added to the campus proper, and has led to a renaissance ofsome adjacent neighborhoods.

The University of Akron is only one of several Akron area institutions to benefit from Dr. Fink’svolunteerism. He also has served on the board of trustees of the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authorityand was a member and chairman of the Ohio Public Health Council. For many years he coached youthleague basketball for the Revere School District.

Dr. Fink is a member of several medical organizations, including the American College ofSurgeons, the Midwest Vascular Society and the American Medical Association. He has publishedresearch in medical journals and given presentations at conferences and professional gatherings.

Dr. Fink is married to Dr. Deborah Owens-Fink. They have four children and live in Richfield.

THE ALMA MATER

Chorus

The Alma Mater for The University of Akron was written by the Rev. Augustus B. Church, who was thelast Universalist clergy to serve as president of Buchtel College (1901–1912). He also was the first personto assume the board responsibilities of chief executive officer. In fact, Church served both as presidentand as a trustee of the institution — as well as pastor of the First Universalist Church of Akron.Dr. Church understood the importance of higher education as a means to improve society, and he workeddiligently on projects to successfully link the educational efforts of Buchtel College with the needs of agrowing city. During his presidency, Buchtel College offered the world’s first courses in rubber chemistry(1909).

THE AKRON BLUE AND GOLD

The University of Akron’s fight song, “The Akron Blue and Gold,” was written in 1939 by Fred Waring, nationally known composer and leader of the wildly-popular band, “Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians.”In response to a request from the University’s student newspaper, Waring wrote “a distinctive song” forThe University of Akron. “The Akron Blue and Gold” premiered over his NBC hookup on November 17,1939, and has been used as the University’s fight song ever since.

O

This program is not an official graduation list.

While every effort is made to ensure accuracy in this commencement program, printing deadlines sometimes prevent inclusion of candidates’ names, or may result in the use of names of persons not completing graduationrequirements. All honors indicated in this program are tentative. Official degree honors for diplomas and transcriptswill be determined after final grades are reported. This printed program, therefore, should not be used to deter-mine a student’s academic or degree status. The University’s official registry for conferral of degrees is the student’s permanent academic record, kept by the Office of the University Registrar, Simmons Hall 120, Akron, OH44325-6208.

The Ohio Universalist Convention established a small, liberal arts college in Akronin 1870 and named it for one of the city’s prominent industrialists, John R. Buchtel. It was Buchtel who led a group of 100 individuals and 13 businesses in a fund-raisingcampaign to build the college. On July 4, 1871, thousands of area citizens turned out towitness the results of that initiative, joining in a great celebration as the cornerstone waslaid for a single but impressive structure that constituted Buchtel College. Both avisionary and a pragmatist, Buchtel believed that the vigor of any city is closely tied tothe proximity of a high quality institution of higher education. Decades of progress, both for the city and for the college he launched, have proven him right. Today, TheUniversity of Akron occupies a campus more than 30 times the size of the old collegeof the 1800s. With an enrollment of 24,300 students from throughout Ohio, the UnitedStates, and 102 foreign countries, the successor of Buchtel College is one of the largestprincipal campuses in Ohio. Long committed to an academic tradition which stressesexcellence, The University of Akron offers more than 300 associate, baccalaureate, andmaster’s degree programs and options, as well as 17 doctoral degree programs and fourlaw degrees. Since 1914, the University has been accredited by the North CentralAssociation of Colleges and Schools, and it is currently classified at the highest level asa comprehensive, doctoral-degree-granting institution. Today, more than 128,000 of itsalumni live and work around the world.
