Message from the Dean Annual reports represent a snapshot in time in the history of an organization—a year in the life. But one year can’t stand alone. Each year builds on those that came before, just as each year is focused as much on the future as it is on the present. Our theme of this year’s annual report, “A Tradition of Excellence,” reflects the reputation of educational, service and research excellence that the University of Florida College of Dentistry has earned following 40 years of dedication, innovation and passion for oral healthcare and academic dentistry. It is a reputation forged not by an institution, but by the people who have passed through our doors. Forged by our faculty—who developed an innovative curriculum some 40 years ago and today attracts some of the best dental students and advanced education students from around the country and around the globe. Forged by our researchers—who developed an oral health research enterprise recognized nation- ally and internationally. Forged by our students—who are transformed by their educational experiences and have developed notable professional careers as dental professionals and community leaders. Forged by our alumni—who, by word and deed, demonstrated to their dental colleagues across the United States the quality of their education at UF. I had the unique opportunity this year to reflect on the history of our college in preparation for a series of presentations and submissions to the Florida Board of Governors regarding dental education and service needs in our state. Although it was part of a conversation about ex- panding our D.M.D. class size, and adding additional dental schools in Florida that ended “on hold” due to funding issues and the economy, it was a valuable exercise. I was able to walk through the timeline of our college’s history, from where we began to where we are today. And the inevitable next step: envisioning where we will be tomorrow, in ten years and beyond. It is clear that we must continue to invest in the future of dental education in Florida and the challenge is to decide what we, in the present, can do to ensure a continued tradition of excellence for the future. Fortunately, I am not facing this challenge alone. I face it together with all of you who through your input and support will help to create our future built on the excellence of our past and forged with the achievements of the present. Message from the DeanAnnual reports represent a snapshot in time in the history of an organization—a year in the life. But one

year can’t stand alone.

It is a reputation forged not by an institution, but by the people who have passed through our doors.Forged by our faculty—who developed an innovative curriculum some 40 years ago and today attracts

some of the best dental students and advanced education students from around the country and around the globe. Forged by our researchers—who developed an oral health research enterprise recognized nation-ally and internationally.

Although it was part of a conversation about ex-panding our D.M.D. class size, and adding additional dental schools in Florida that ended “on hold” due to funding issues and the economy, it was a valuable exercise.

Sincerely,

Teresa A. Dolan, D.D.S., M.P.H. Professor and Dean

EducationThis year, the college received more than 1,400 applications for the

D.M.D. program from some of the best and brightest future dentists in Florida and the United States. Our applicants are growing in diversity as well as excellence. The college ranks third among U.S. dental schools for the number of enrolled Hispanic students and 17th in the number of African American students.

Our 36th Annual Commencement Ceremony in May 2011 celebrated the accomplishments of 81 Doctor of Dental Medicine candidates, and 36 dentists who received certificates or graduate degrees in Advanced Dental Education. The D.M.D. graduates followed a national trend, with 60 percent of dental students pursuing advanced degrees before en-tering practice; seven members of the class joined various branches of the United States Armed Forces, where they are taking care of the oral health needs of our nation’s military servicemen and servicewomen.

The national trend in advanced dental education was the driving force behind the creation of the college’s new School of Advanced Dental Sciences. Launched in July 2011, the school facilitates the integration of advanced study in endodontics, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry and periodontology and improves the educational experience for our residents. The school, which also includes the UF Continuing Dental Education Program, places the college at the forefront of educational change and positions us to meet the emerging educational expectations of tomorrow’s dental students.

ResearchOur vibrant and growing research program is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in oral

health research, particularly in the oral biology arena. During the 2010–11 fiscal year, college researchers received more than $16 million in sponsored funding, with extensive support from the prestigious National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, part of the National Institutes of Health.

Students and faculty participate in a variety of research activities related to oral health. The college recently added a D.M.D./Ph.D. program that offers integrated dental and graduate research training culminating in the awarding of both a D.M.D. and a Ph.D. in biomedical science.

Campaign Goals

The University of Florida’s Florida Tomorrow Campaign is in its final year. Thanks to our generous donors, the college has exceeded our $15 million goal, raising a total of $17,361,546. Thank you!

Alumni & Friends Fund Clinic RenovationGifts will create a new home for clinical care and education in Periodontology and Prosthodontics

Is there anything more generous than giving for the benefit of those who follow in your footsteps? Alumni and friends of the college have done just that—with gifts currently totaling more than $500,000 to fund a trans-formative nine-month renovation of Clinic 1A into a state-of-the-art peri-odontology and prosthodontics graduate clinic. The renovation is scheduled for completion in July 2012, just in time for the 2012 periodontology and prosthodontics residents to begin their graduate programs.

Started almost ten years ago, these projects gained traction with leadership from the Department of Periodontology and gifts from alumni and friends. Renovation plans include a redesigned clinic located on the first floor of the dental tower close to the specialty clinics of the newly established School of Advanced Dental Sciences.

The new facilities will include surgical suites named for lead donors, including Gerald Kluft, D.D.S., and Geraldine Ferris, D.M.D. Their gifts, along with ongoing support from many other contributors and a $200,000 gift from Biomet 3I, made this project possible. The combined graduate clinics of periodontology and prosthodontics will enhance interdisciplinary learning and will also include modern ceramic and removable prosthodontic laboratories. All contributors will be recognized in the renovated facilities.

To see the blueprints and more design images, to learn how to support this project or to view the names of everyone who has made a gift, please visit our website at dental.ufl.edu/clinic-renovation-2012/.

Pediatric Graduates Honor SilvaSince 1984, the UF Pediatric Den-tist Resident Program has educated more than 90 dentists to serve the special needs of pediatric patients. Alumni of the program live in 14 different states, but remain strongly connected. This year, the five grad-uates of the Pediatric Dental Resi-dency Class of 2007 made a class gift totaling $30,000 to honor their graduate program director, Daniela Silva, D.D.S., M.S. and renovate the Pediatric Residents Room.

Silva, who recently left the college to take a position at the UCLA School of Dentistry, directed the pediatric residency program from 2004 to 2011. She is well loved and respected by her students.

Left to right : Drs. Eric Berry, Mindy Hall, Daniela Silva (Program Director), Amanda Velazquez, Lisa Ameer, and Jordan Tarver.
