First , let’s consider cost: the cost of attending a community college is less than half what students pay at a four-year college. I don’t need to tell you that student loan debt is at an all-time high and poses a significant burden for

students and families. Approximately half of our students get a two-year degree and then transfer to a four-year college, where they graduate with significantly less debt.

Second, A-B Tech works with employers to design programs tailored specifically for jobs in our community. A recent study by the American Association of Community Colleges “Where Value Meets Values: the Economic Impact of Community Colleges,” found that community college graduates receive nearly $5 in benefits for every dollar they spend on their education. The bottom line is that our graduates are hired into better paying jobs.

Third, we offer quality education. A-B Tech’s recent reaccreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges is significant. It means A-B Tech is recognized as an institution of academic integrity and excellence by our peers in 11 southern states and Latin America for the next decade.

As we begin a new fall semester, we will be offering several new programs, including the new Central Sterile Processing certificate for healthcare workers and the

launch of our customized workforce training program with GE Aviation, which selected A-B Tech to manage its Composites Center of Excellence.

Finally, I’m pleased to recognize our Culinary Arts Program for sending a student team to the American Culinary Federation’s national “final four” contest for a record eighth time in late July. Our culinary program is second to none and its continued national and international recognition are the result of setting a standard of excellence. We’re very proud of our students and staff!

When Dr. Joseph Fox recently retired from his position as Chair of Business Administration at A-B Tech, he left a legacy through his work with the Minority Student Leadership Academy.

When Fox founded the program in 2008, it was called the A-B Tech Minority Male Mentoring Program and had 16 members. Today, it has been renamed the Minority Student Leadership Academy, is open to all races and genders, and has more than 200 members, including 97 women. Fox said students involved in the Academy tend to be more involved in their classes and campus life, which encourages them to complete their educations at A-B Tech. “Our retention rates have soared over the 80 percent mark and were 100% last semester,” he said. Jeremy Jackson, a recent graduate who obtained three degrees, said his experience with the Minority Student Leadership Academy enriched his years at A-B Tech. “ It provided a lot of resources, and exposed me to a lot of people I’ve met, a lot of networking, and going to places I’ve never seen before. It’s really just a great experience,” he said.Phyllis Utley, A-B Tech’s diversity recruiter and co-host of the College’s No Limits radio show on WRES FM, has worked with Fox in the Academy and will remain involved following his retirement.“The Academy is a student-focused organization that helps students navigate their college experience and life,” she said. “It provides a lot of resources for students outside of the academics, the things that you need to create a very healthy life. It’s a smart start in their journey.”Fox said the Academy also gets involved in the community, most recently creating a community service project focused on assisting middle school students.“We are developing future male leaders,” he said. “Their story is also our story. Our A-B Tech students share their challenges growing up and how they overcame them with minority male middle school students.”Fox said A-B Tech students were alarmed when one middle school boy told them he saw jail in his future. “Our members took him under their wing. They ended up learning more about themselves working through the group. They were shocked to recognize young people already think they are a lost cause and college was not in their future,” he said. CONSTRUCTION PROJECT UPDATEConstruction of A-B Tech’s new Jack and Carolyn Ferguson Center for Allied Health and Workforce Development began in early 2014 and is targeted for completion by Fall 2015. Buncombe County, which is responsible for all construction on A-B Tech’s campus, also has broken ground on a new multipurpose building and parking garage near the Coman Student Center. A rerouting of Fernihurst Drive, the roadway adjacent to the area, has been completed and is now open to traffic. Follow our progress at abtech.edu/construction-projects.

The new A-B Tech Promise scholarship has been established to enable up to 20 recent high school equivalency graduates continue on their educational journey beyond a high school equivalency certificate.“It is the College’s tangible commitment to further embrace these students as part of the College community and culture,” said Lisa Bush, Director of Enrollment Services. “These scholars will receive mentoring, advising and student support to build the key skills needed to succeed academically and to meet their goals.” The A-B Tech Promise transition team in Student Services and Basic Skills will build a supportive environment to

ensure students have a successful transition to college and a successful future with no limits.

Awarded at A-B Tech’s recent High School Equivalency graduation, the first 17 recipients of the scholarship are: Kathryn Ingle, Jennifer Herrera, Kristin Davis, Shaina Simpson, Gwen Lyles, Bethany Melvin, Devin Roberts, Christine Clymer, Tyler Snowden, Wendy Brooks, Jenna Douglass, Nicollette Larrimore, Kierstin Smith, Kaitlin Mundy, Calvin Sheppard, Jessica Purple and Christina Zaikina.

The High School Equivalency program has transitioned from using GED® in its name because GED is now a proprietary exam and other types of high school equivalency tests are available. For more information, visit abtech.edu/ged

The A-B Tech Community College Foundation added new scholarships from generous donors to help students fund their education. During the 2013-14 school year, nearly 400 scholarships were awarded. Mike Fryar, who was appointed by the Buncombe County Commissioners, has been a resident of Buncombe County

for 50 years. He attended A.C. Reynolds High School and served in the U.S. Navy. A self-made man and small business owner for 32 years, Mike started his career sweeping floors for the legendary Banjo Matthews — working his way up the ladder and eventually starting his own engine business, Fryar Performance, in 1980. He currently serves as a Buncombe County Commissioner for District 2.Frances Ramsey was appointed by the Madison County Commission to fill one of its seats on the Board. Ramsey

taught at Madison High School for many years and was an instructor for A-B Tech at Madison in History and Humanities (HIS11/112 and HUM 122/123) under the Huskins program. Madison Director Sherri Davis said Ramsey is an excellent addition to the Board. “She is well-known and loved in Madison County,” she said. “Her classes were always filled with high school and adult students who loved her.”

A-B Tech’s Pharmacy Technology program has expanded its program with a new night course to accommodate growing demand

and to make it easier for current pharmacy technicians to become certified. The pharmacy tech field is expected to grow by 20 percent through 2022, according to the

United States Department of Labor, faster than the average for all occupations. In addition, legislation currently under consideration will require all pharmacy technicians to be certified, which means many current pharmacy techs will be required to obtain certificates.“The night program is ideal for someone already working in a pharmacy,” said Zachary Jordan, Chair of the Pharmacy Technology program. “For the technicians that are already working, legislation is coming down the pipe that will require certified pharmacy technicians to come from an accredited program. No one can be certified without it.”The program also is designed for people interested in the profession who do not have pharmacy experience, Jordan said. “We can provide a solid education and preparedness before they enter the job market,” Jordan said. “The new certification exam by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board is very difficult and hard to pass without putting in the classwork.” A-B Tech’s program gives students the opportunity to work in a clinical setting and get the critical hands-on training in addition to the needed classroom knowledge. “We’ve got a 100 percent certification passing rate,” Jordan said. The day program currently serves 16 students and the new night program will start with a class of 10. Potential students must apply to A-B Tech and scheduled an appointment with an advisor. For more information, visit abtech.edu/pharmacyFAQ

Financial Aid OfficeASSISTS STUDENTS

A-B Tech’s Financial Aid Office serves all eligible students who require assistance in paying for tuition, fees, books and supplies by awarding grants, scholarships, and/or federal Direct Loans based upon the successful completion of their financial aid account with the College. The Financial Aid Office can, in accordance with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), provide eligible students with Title IV funding to assist with educational expenses. The FAFSA can be easily completed online at www.FAFSA.gov, and will serve as the basis for determining all Title IV eligibility. For any students who may require assistance completing their FAFSA, the Financial Aid Office regularly offers 30-minute FAFSA workshops which provide students guidance for submitting their application. Appointments for FAFSA assistance can be made via the College website at: abtech.edu/fafsa-by-appointment All Title IV aid is awarded based on the following requirements: • Financial need as determined by the FAFSA • Maintaining enrollment in minimum credit/contact hour requirements

pursuant to an approved degree or diploma program • Satisfactory academic progress (SAP) as defined by the U.S. Dept.

of Education and A-B Tech

SOURCES OF TITLE IV FUNDING INCLUDE:Grants: Grant funding is need-based, and usually does not have to be repaid. Eligibility is determined by FAFSA results, institutional cost of

attendance, and enrollment status. Every student who submits a FAFSA application is automatically screened for both federal and state grant eligibility.Federal Work-Study: The Federal Work-Study program provides part-time job opportunities for students with financial need. Jobs may be located on, or off campus. Students are paid an hourly rate, and receive a monthly paycheck for hours worked. To apply for work study positions, visit the Job Board on A-B Tech’s website at: www.abtech.edu/jobboard Scholarships: A-B Tech offers many scholarships which are available to students enrolled in eligible curriculum programs. Enrollment scholarships are available from the College, as well as a wide range of

other scholarships available through the STARS Online application, which is open from January through March of each academic year. Eligibility requirements will vary based on each individual scholarship criteria. Student Loans: Federal Direct Loans are available to students who are enrolled at least half-time (six credit hours) in a qualifying program, and who maintain good academic standing. Loans must be repaid. The amount a student can borrow each academic year will depend upon enrollment, dependency status, and other aid received.

NEW CENTRAL STERILE PROCESSING PROGRAM OFFERED

A-B Tech’s Allied Health Department has added a new certificate program for Central Sterile Processing, which is designed to prepare healthcare workers for sterile processing and central service supply. Students will develop skills necessary to properly disinfect, prepare and issue both sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment for patient care. Graduates will receive a certificate and may be eligible to apply to take the National Institute for Certification of Healthcare Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel Examination (CBSPD). Employment opportunities include surgery centers, dialysis facilities, and central processing units in hospitals. For more information, visit abtech.edu/csp-certificateAllied Health also is expanding two popular programs to include night classes starting with fall semester classes on August 18. Culinary Team Heads to Nationals

A-B Tech Community College students are headed back to nationals for the American Culinary Federation’s Hot Food Team competition in Kansas City in July. Continuing a tradition of excellence, team members Alex Harris, Caroline Williams, Ruth Solis, Jay O’Hannon and Kristina Costa, will be judged on their skills and cooking, while floor judges will evaluate their organization, sanitation, teamwork, workflow, and cooking techniques and knife skills. This is the eighth time A-B Tech has had a team make it to the national level, more than any other student team in the history of the competition. The A-B Tech team won first place in 2007. “The team’s skills are definitely high level,” said Chef Instructor Eric Backer, the team’s coach. “You can certainly see the difference in how much practice they did.” Students have been practicing three times a week since graduation. All of them either work or are doing internships, too.“Including gathering and organizing all food products, recipe development plus prep lists and planning, it is more than

36 hours per week,” said Culinary Chair Matt Tracy. “Their willingness to put in the long hours is a testament to their dedication to each other. Each team member has put forth their best efforts and that is all that can be asked of them.”Competitors are judged on such criteria as the flavor, taste, texture and doneness of their foods; serving methods; portion sizes and creativity. Culinary teams from the College have been to national competition six times in the past 10 years. “They are an incredible team – truly. They are professional, focused and well-skilled,” said Chef Sheila Tillman, Associate Dean of Hospitality Education. “A-B Tech comes with a standard and our students continually raise the standard at competition. This team doesn’t have to be motivated. They have the drive to push themselves toward excellence.”“The team is pleased to be able to represent the ACF Southeast region,” said Backer. “The students have had their sights set on Kansas City from the beginning, and I could not be prouder of a group of students representing our school. The team is aware of the task at hand, and they are preparing for the incredible competition they will face at the national convention.”Visit abtech.edu/culinary

A-B Tech opened its current Madison County location in 1990 to offer a more convenient location for residents to take classes. Over the past 24 years, programs have expanded to meet the needs of the area.

“ Students can take most of the general education courses such as English, math, social/behavioral sciences, communication, computers, and electives right here on our campus. We also have several free computer classes and GED testing preparation,” Director Sherri Davis said.

According to site Director Sherri Davis, the students can earn certifications and get many of their transfer degree classes without having to leave the county. “Students can take most of the general education courses such as English, math, social/behavioral sciences, communication, computers, and electives right here on our campus,” Davis said. Students can earn welding and criminal justice certificates, along with a multitude of non-credit continuing education classes such as Nurse Aide level I, EMT-Basic, Effective Teacher Training, CPR, small business, forklift safety and blacksmithing. “We also have several free computer classes and GED testing preparation,” Davis said. Davis started working for A-B Tech on June 1, 2007 as secretary for the Madison Site. She was promoted to Administrative Assistant and Assistant Director under Dr. Connie Buckner who retired in 2013 after 42 years at A-B Tech. Working with Davis are Sharon Cupstid, Assistant Site Director; Jerome Moriarty, Custodian/Maintenance and part-time Administrative Assistant Jude Cestaro. “Working with such great people as a team as we serve the needs of our community is very rewarding. We care about our students and the community and we strive to make each person who enters the building feel they are the most important person in the world,” Davis said.“I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Connie Buckner for six years. She is one of the most compassionate and caring people I have ever met. Watching her with students was incredible. She loved them and they loved her,” Davis said.Davis is a proud product of A-B Tech, attending the college after her job of 17 years relocated to Mexico. “A-B Tech and the Employment Security Commission came to talk to us about going back to college if we wanted to,” Davis said. She enrolled, graduated, then earned a second degree from A-B Tech and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree.

“I was at the Madison campus many hours working on homework and took classes both at Madison and on the Asheville Campus. I went to Madison High School and Mars Hill Elementary. I know a lot of people in the county. It’s great to be recognized and awesome to be able to help

students and our community in any way I can.” Davis said. “A-B Tech inspired me and it is my desire to give back by inspiring others. Working with students, faculty, staff, Madison High School, and the community of Madison County is wonderful and I look forward to coming to work each day. Encouraging students as they change their lives by striving for their educational and career goals is wonderful. I love it when students come in and ask to see me – they want to see me. What an awesome feeling! I am very blessed and thankful to have been given the opportunity to work for A-B Tech’s Madison Site. This will be a wonderful career for me and I will work hard for A-B Tech and Madison County,” she said.A-B Tech will open its third College Readiness Center (CRC) at Madison High School in August. The center is designed to give high school students an extra boost as they prepare for a college education. Madison High CRC participants will be assessed and tutored in reading, writing, arithmetic, and algebra, with the intention of eliminating students’ need for noncredit-bearing preparatory courses after being admitted to college. Students who complete the course will also earn an

elective high school credit. A-B Tech opened similar centers at Asheville and Roberson high schools last year, and those CRCs have been reaping financial and academic benefits for their communities, according to Michael Dempsey, the college’s Director of Educational Partnerships. For more information about the Madison High/A-B Tech College Readiness Center, contact Michael Dempsey at 398-7484 or [email protected].
