• Delta Air Lines is investing $50 million to soothe one of air travel's biggest headaches: lost and delayed luggage

• Delta already has one of the airline industry's best luggage handling records … but hopes that by deploying a RFID … tracking system globally it can improve further

• Ultimately the bag tag might be replaced with permanent RFID [tags] in our suitcases …

A Tale from the Future…

I need some new luggage

The retailer asks if I want the bag’s EPC assigned to me. I reply “yes”

I visit an retailer web page and order a RAIN-enabled suitcase

A Tale from the Future …

My luggage arrives!

The shipper uses the bag’s EPC for delivery routing

The retailer linked the bag’s EPC to my home address and granted the shipper access to that information

A Tale from the Future …

My futuristic Echo includes a RAIN reader

Alexa asks me if she should:Q: Register the bag’s warranty? A: YesQ: Change the shipped EPC to a new one? A: YesQ: Alert my RAIN-enabled phone that the EPC is mine? A: YesQ: Assign RAIN privacy protections appropriate for luggage? A: YesQ: Register the EPC with my airline frequent-flier numbers & TSA? A: Yes

A Tale from the Future …

Today is my trip to Amsterdam

I pack my bag with my RAIN-enabled stuff

I use the RAIN reader in my futuristic phone to link the bag’s EPC to my ticket, alert the airline, and alert TSA that my bag flies TSA pre-check

At the airport, I handover my bag and head to security – no waiting in a check-in or bag-drop line

A Tale from the Future …

The airline verifies my bag’s destination using RAIN-enabled belt loaders

And sorts it using RAIN-enabled sorters

At the baggage carousel, my futuristic phone beeps when its RAIN reader reads my bag coming my way

A Tale from the Future …

My vacation is over; today I fly home

The airline alerts me as I board the plane that there is a security situation and my bag will be delayed

My phone RAIN-authenticates my bag, and vice versa, when the driver delivers my bag

I arrange next-day delivery to my work and track progress with my phone

A Tale from the Future…

Alas, after a few trips I realize my bag is just a tad bit too big – I really want something smaller

As for my old bag, Alexa, please transfer ownership from me to my daughter…

I buy a new bag from the retailer and repeat the process

The IoT Vision

• “A Bag’s Life” is an example of the IoT’spromise and challenges

• The promise is embodied in the vision and mission statements

MissionTo enable businesses and consumers to identify, locate, authenticate and engage items in our everyday world

VisionA future where everyday things are part of a connected world … like raindrops to the sea

• Harmonization

• Interoperability

• Partitioning

• Extensibility

Data Management

• Storage

• Integrity

• Discovery

• Distribution

• Persistence

Chris Diorio Assertions

• Enabling consumers to use RAIN can massively accelerate adoption

• The three challenges are a bigger risk to that massive adoption than are RAIN technology or market acceptance

Page 16

Page 17: A Bag’s Life - RAIN RFIDrainrfid.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/5-A-Bags-Life...2016/09/05  · The IoT Vision • “A Bag’s Life” is an example of the IoT’s promise and challenges

A Tale from Our Past…

• In 2000 the MIT Auto-ID Center published a memo entitled “The Networked Physical World”

Page 17

Page 18: A Bag’s Life - RAIN RFIDrainrfid.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/5-A-Bags-Life...2016/09/05  · The IoT Vision • “A Bag’s Life” is an example of the IoT’s promise and challenges

I Want to Rekindle that Vision

• The data challenges are hard – Universal namespace

– Data management

– Data governance

• The number of stakeholders is large– GS1, WG10, AIM, NIST, IERC, many more are involved

• But we, the RAIN community, are poised to connect more items to the Internet than all other technologies combined!

Page 18

Page 19: A Bag’s Life - RAIN RFIDrainrfid.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/5-A-Bags-Life...2016/09/05  · The IoT Vision • “A Bag’s Life” is an example of the IoT’s promise and challenges

How Do We Start?

• Partnering with GS1 is a natural first step– EPCglobal embraced that original Auto-ID vision

– RAIN + GS1 can lead solving the three challenges

• Extending the partnership is the next step– The opportunity is larger than RAIN + GS1

– Data carriers can be RAIN, NFC, Zigbee, Bluetooth, more

• Our outreach must extend beyond business– Consumers

– Government

– Other IoT bodies

My Request

• RAIN engage GS1, end users, and other alliances to solve the three challenges and thereby drive RAIN’s vision and mission – Universal namespace

– Data management

– Data governance
