MKK</p><p>Dear Readers,</p><p>This presentation is prepared for those of the beginner level who want to learn about DSLRPhotography.</p><p>This will help you understand the meaning of photography, exposure, DSLR camera body, lensesand the basic composition in photography.</p><p>In addition, there are a few collections of photographs by two famous photographers whom I mostadmire.</p><p>None of those pictures, photos and article in this presentation is my own. MKK</p><p>3</p><p>Q: What is the meaning of the word 'photography'?</p><p>A: The literal meaning is "Writing (graphy) with light (photo)".</p><p>The term comes from The Greek word phos, photos - lightand graphos - writing.</p><p>The word photography means writing with light but most photographers claim theyare painting with light!</p><p>This 'writing with light' or as us photographers say ' painting with light' was firstreputed to have been termed by Sir John Herschel to William Henry Fox</p><p>Talbotin letter in 1839. Herschel was an English astronomer who also devised thewords negative and positive and I believe the word snapshot. A lot of his work</p><p>involved chemistry which was the forerunner of the black and white processes.Henry Fox Talbot was the inventor of the negative positive process ofphotography. MKK</p><p>9</p><p>UNSERSTANDING EXPOSURE</p><p>What is Exposure?</p><p> Your camera understands EXPOSURE, which is essentially the total amount of light entering your camera used to create the photo.</p><p>Exposure describes how light or how dark your photographs are</p><p> Under-exposure is when your photos come out too dark.</p><p> Over-exposure is when your photos come out too light, washed out or blown out.</p><p>(L) Over-exposed Too bright. The white dog is blinding. Need sunglasses. (M) Under-exposed Too dark. The white dog looks like a</p><p>phantom. (R) Nice balance of light on the dog, bubbles and grass. Awwww! Images that are technically considered</p><p>to be over or underexposed can be visually appealing:</p><p>(above) Both these beach images have elements of under and over</p><p>exposure. MKK</p><p>13</p><p>SHUTTER SPEED (Controlling Motion)</p><p>What is the Shutter in your camera?</p><p> When you take a picture and you hear that click, that is the sound of your shutter opening and closing. Imagine the concept like shutters</p><p>on your window. You open and close the shutters to control the amount of light entering your room. MKK</p><p>17</p><p>ISO SENSITIVITY (Controlling cameras light sensitivity)What is ISO on your camera?</p><p> ISO refers to how sensitive your camera is to light. Halfway</p><p>between white and black is middle grey. Middle grey reflects 18% of light; this is why its called 18% grey. Camera meters are calibrated to</p><p>18% grey. MKK</p><p>33</p><p>1. f-numberFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia</p><p>In optics, the f-number(sometimes called focal ratio, f-ratio, f-stop, orrelative aperture) of an optical system is the ratio of the lens'sfocal length to the diameter ofthe entrance pupil. It is a dimensionless numberthat is a quantitative measure oflens speed, an important concept in photography.</p><p>The f-number is given by</p><p>Where</p><p>is the focal length, and is the diameter of the entrance pupil (effective aperture).</p><p>Stops, f-stop conventions, and exposure</p><p>The term stop is sometimes confusing due to its multiple meanings. A stop can be a physical object: an opaque part of an optical system that blocks certain</p><p>rays.
