BARBARA’S STORY...

Barbara   Janssen,  a  wonderful   lady  with  a  big   heart,   came   to   Penang   8   years   ago.  She  is  the  one-­‐and-­‐only  European  to  have  founded  a  no  kill  dog  shelter  in  Malaysia,  and   does   a   wonderful   job   rescuing   the  strays  in  Penang.  

Her  shelter  is  like  a   ‘dog’s  paradise,’  with  more  than  250  dogs  roaming  freely.

When   she   first   came   to   Asia,   it   was   a  shock  to   her   to  see   stray  puppies  by   the  roadside   (something   she   had   not  experienced   in  Germany,  her  homeland).  Barbara  could  have  reIred  comfortably  in  Malaysia   aJer   moving   from   Europe.   But  instead…

She  has  sacrificed   so  much   for   the   stray  dogs,   giving   up   a  comfortable   life   in   the  city  to  live  on  a  rundown  farm  with  all  her  furry  friends.  She  has  used  up  most  of  her  wealth   for   the   shelter.   Barbara   says,  "What  I  have,  my  dogs  have."  

Feeding  her  dogs  before  herself,  she  makes  sure  that  all  the  dogs  -­‐-­‐  no  maMer  how  sick  or  healthy,  stray  or  unwanted,  old  or  young  -­‐-­‐  are  well  taken  care  of.  She  takes  them  in  and  loves  them  all  uncondiIonally,  knowing  every  single  dog  by  its  name  -­‐-­‐  and  all  their  stories  which  are  mostly  sad  and  heart  wrenching.  Luckily,  our  furry  friends  have  a  place  to  call  home  -­‐  4PAWS!

When humans are humane

All for our furry friends: Janssen and Elizer watching the zumba dance session at New World Park. The abused dog

has known the cruel side of humans but now it is healthy, having been rescued by 4Paws.

ELIZER is a mixed border collie with a sad past. When she was a stray pup several years ago, she went with tail

wagging to beg for food from a hawker, with disastrous results.

The hawker hatefully slashed her with a cleaver. She lost her left eye and half her face was split open.

Penang Animal Welfare Society (4PAWS) founder Barbara Janssen found her in a horrid state.

“Her left eye and left side of her face were maggot ridden. We spent months nursing her back to health, but her left

eye was gone for good.”

Today, Janssen said Elizer was the friendliest and most patient dog in 4PAWS, and is the superstar of the

organisation dedicated to rescuing abandoned stray dogs.

“We rehabilitate strays and ultimately help them find permanent homes,” Janssen said.

Elizer was spotted curiously watching a group of 160 Zumba dancers at New World Park in Burma Road in Penang.

Unknown to the one-eyed dog, the Zumba dancers were sweating it out to help stray dogs like her.

The two-and-a-half-hour Zumba dancing session raised nearly RM9,000 to help 4PAWS.

The organisation needs the funds to continue rescuing and caring for abandoned dogs.

Event coordinator Camisse Siow said eight Zumba instructors volunteered to lead the dance session.

“Everyone paid RM20 to join the session and learn from the dance instructors, and all the money was donated to

4PAWS.”

She added that 30% of the sales revenue of dog food products and souvenirs at the event was also given to the

society to fund medical aid for strays.

“This is not the first time we have helped raise funds for strays. It gives us great pleasure to dance for a good

cause,” Siow said.

William never liked dogs because he was scared by a big one when he was very young. He would never go near them. However, when his family adopted a dog from 4PAWS in March, it changed his world! The furry companion melted his heart and now he loves dogs very much! His kind and loving family also adopted a cat and rescued another from the drain.

Tonight’s Dinner Bowl benefit introduces the wonderful work of 4PAWS and founder Barbara Janssen to the larger community of Penang, Malaysia, and the world.

I first met Barbara 6 years ago. I have watched her give all of her time, energy, and money to the cause of rescuing and caring for Penang’s stray dogs and cats. A few months ago, we spoke about the future for the Penang Animal Welfare Society – and how it is time that it becomes better known.

From the 52nd floor government offices at KOMTAR, among many local pet-caring businesses, and in the national press, there has been a wave of support in recent months.

Founded by Ms. Barbara Janssen, the society currently provides support for Penang’s only registered animal sanctuary -- the 4PAWS dog shelter in Teluk Bahang -- home to more than 250 dogs. Also under 4PAWS’ care are 65 cats with plans in progress for sanctuary for cats as well.

Thanks to the many volunteers and supporters who help in so many ways, 4PAWS can look forward to realizing Barbara’s dream of a ‘forever shelter’ – and to continuing to make a big difference in the lives of Penang’s animals…
