Dear Members,

While writing this preface, I see an old copy of Greens Committee duty roster on my desk issued by the Club Captain. For years, I would diligently print out the list of golf duty dates and pin it around my office table. Just to share with some of us who are not familiar with the game of golf, Greens Committee conducts courtesy rounds, workshops and also serves as tournament referees. Initially it felt strange and unnerving to test a member at golf but later I found out that it was a USGA requirement. Looking back now, it was a great opportunity to socialise and I made many friends.

NSRCC will be looking for members to contribute as committee members as part of its renewal process. Do step forward if you have time and ideas to contribute. The renewal process is necessary for the club to stay relevant to members needs.

In this issue, you can read about Mount Pleasant, our new F&B operator at The Deck. From the past, I see that every new change in operator creates taste and service challenges. We look forward to a fantastic dining experience for all. Member’s support in terms of patronage and feedback would be greatly appreciated. Also by now, most of you would have heard about KTM shifting to Woodlands. For many years, regular golfers at Kranji Sanctuary had encountered delays at the Kranji train crossing. Now, the traffic lights and narrow road junction had been consigned to the history books. When I golf there one Sunday, the road was resurfaced and I drove past without noticing the junction. Great, now we can golf at Kranji without worrying about getting stuck and missing our tee times.

The Resort & Facilities Committee is organising the annual year end party and this year’s theme is “It’s is a Great Great World”. Sign up early and enjoy the early bird discount! The bowling centre has upgraded with new synthetic lanes. Renovations had just been completed and you can sign up for the many exciting events organised by our bowling convenor Florence Khemlani. Last month, I met her at the Resort & Facilities Committee meeting and I asked her if she plays golf. She says no because she is at the bowling centre most nights. So do see her there for a bowling good time!

In this issue, Maureen Teo, a member of both the Greens and Editorial Committee shared her recent trip visiting our affiliated clubs in Malaysia and also visiting a durian farm belonging to a friend of ours. Malaysia is our closest neighbour and easily accessible for a short break. One of the privileges of NSRCC membership is that we have access to Malaysia and other overseas clubs at preferential rates. All you need to do is LOGIN under MEMBERSHIP SERVICES at our website and obtain the introductory letter with a click. Do take advantage of this to save some money in this period of rising costs.

By the time you received this issue in the mail, petrolheads will rejoicing as Singapore largest spectacle on the sporting calendar will be in town ie Formula One. At the same time, our Muslim friends will be celebrating Hari Raya and Hindu members, Deepavali in October. Some families will also be going on holidays during the short September school break. I want to take this opportunity to wish you well as you go on to enjoy yourself with family and friends.

Have a jolly good time and stay safe.

Regards,Tan Sze WahEditor

updates

‘Tropicana Time’ at The DeckNew kid on the block Mount Pleasant has been operating at The Deck since late july and hasn’t looked back in serving hearty food to golfers. Since opening, they’ve have grown accustomed to the capacity crowd of golfers filing the place during CAT 1 closure to serving food ideal for lunch meetings or take-aways.

For its soft opening, F&B Manager Mr Foo opted to operate with limited items on the menu so as to familiarise with the crowd conditions to better train staff and create good customer experiences.

If you noticed, the café has a tropical theme and aims to provide you with a whole new eating experience at The Deck. Under the auspices of Chef Chong the current residential chef, his signature dish of Hainanese Chicken Rice is not to be missed! A dish native to his dialect, this dish is as good as it gets.

Chef Chong, brings in his wealth of experience having worked as executive chef at Riverview Hotel, sous chef at Shanghai Hilton, chef de partie at Orchard Café. He has garnered at three medals from previous Food & Hotel Asia (FHA) culinary competitions he had competed in. He is one who has both speed and patience.

Apart from Chef Chong’s very famous Hainanese Chicken Rice*, he is also able to whip up dishes such as Fried Hokkien Mee, Nasi Goreng an Indonesian cuisine, Fish Head Curry, Beef Hor Fun or anything that comes into your mind. A famous local delicacy, Fish Head Curry is a portion enough for more than two. Apart from that, there are many ala carte dishes that you can pick off the menu to settle a family lunch or dinner. He is definitely a reliable man you could leave your hungry stomach with.

Rise and shine with their American Breakfast set which includes choice of scrambled or fried egg served with chicken sausage, hash brown and toast and includes coffee or tea or chilled orange juice. Another popular item on the menu is the Club Sandwich served with side salad and fries.

If you have been a regular patron to The Deck (Golfers’ Terrace) do share with us and fellow diners your food reviews or vote for your favourite dish. We would love to hear your feedback, so send it in to [email protected].

updates

of a NSRCC membershipMost of the time, when we join a country club, we often think of all the weekend golf games that we will be playing with our golfing friends. We always look forward to the coming weekend to get our regular golf fix. However, a golf membership has other benefits too and one of them is the affiliated club arrangements that we have with overseas golf clubs. When traveling, we tend to overlook what our golf membership actually offers us both overseas and back home. The nearest retreat that NSRCC offers is located in Melaka and there are two of them: A’Famosa Golf Resort and Orna Golf and Country Club.

Weekend getawayJust recently, a group of friends and I took a convenient getaway to enjoy two golf courses in Melaka, This time round we included a trip to a durian plantation as we had received an invitation from Mr TC Tay, a golfing kaki and member of a reciprocal golf club (Staffield) from Malaysia,

cum owner of a durian plantation in Melaka. An hour drive from the Tuas second link brought us to the Pagoh R&R for our breakfast –nasi lemak, mee soto and mee rebus

and downed the simple but delicious food with the fragrant local coffee. It was a pretty smooth drive and we managed

to reach Melaka just before 10am. As there was a golf tournament at A’Famosa that morning, we were advised to tee off around 2pm, so like any true-blue S i n g a p o r e a n , we would not miss the chance to do some shopping. Not only were we able to pick up local products like “tau sar” biscuits, belacan, sambal chilli and of course the 100% kampong gula Melaka used to make nonya kuehs, we even managed to collect the baju and sarong kebaya that a friend had sent earlier for alteration to a local tailor.

After the quick shopping, as we headed back to our car parked along the main road, we were almost slapped with a fine for not displaying a parking coupon. That made me feel like back home in Singapore with the parking attendant all ready to issue his summon. We managed to dash to him and begged him to give us another chance and his sharp response was, “You have to do this in Singapore right? Why you never do the same here!” and we just kept apologising till he let us off.

We then continued with our drive to A’Famosa. The club and the hotel next to it were abuzz with people and activities. The theme park next to the club was crowded with hoards of people and their young children in tow – it was a corporate family day and all were having a wonderful day out.

After a quick lunch at the golfers’ terrace, we teed off our first round of golf. It was an extremely hot afternoon but fortunately, the constant breeze and the beautiful scenery made us forget about the heat. The pace of play was good and we enjoyed it.

The A’Famosa Golf Resort comprises a hotel, the Animal World, the Water World, Cowboy Town and the Microlight and Sport Centre which explained the popularity of the resort as a destination for family entertainment as it caters

Member Maureen Teo shares her experience on visits to affiliated clubs in Melaka.

to people from different age groups. A’Famosa Golf Resort has a 27-hole golf course named Rockies, Crocodiles and Palms. The course flows naturally with the undulating terrain, lined with mature trees, spectacular boulders and pristine waterways, uniquely combined to provide the best of a natural setting for a nice round of golf.

The next day, we headed for Orna to play our second round of golf, as the durian plantation was in the same vicinity. Opened in late 1997, the Orna Golf and Country Club has a 27-hole golf course comprising the North, East and West courses. It is known as a relatively challenging golf course and is well maintained. The courses were generally undulating and the buggy rides were pretty bumpy. The fairways were pretty wide with several holes occasionally having upper and lower tiers, which makes playing there a different experience. The greens were pretty fast and it was disappointing to three putts which was a regular occurrence throughout the game for some of us.

Yummy durians, here we come! After a light lunch and hurried shower, we headed for the durian plantation.

Upon our arrival at the plantation, our host Mr Tay made sure that we were comfortably sprayed with insect repellant as the place was infested with mosquitoes. Thereafter, the different varieties of durians were brought out. One by one, Mr Tay patiently explained its special features and urged us to taste them. Whether it was the D24, D28 or the renowned “mao shan wang”, Mr Tay would describe the texture, taste and highlight its specialty. It was an eye-opening as well as mouth-watering session. Never had I tasted so many different types of durians at one go. The bitter taste of the “maoshanwang” remains vivid in my mind even as I write this article.

We also managed to see the entire process of durian harvesting, how they are sorted out, ready to be delivered. We commenced on our uneventful drive back to Singapore and reached home in time for dinner. All in all, it was an extremely fruitful, enjoyable and meaningful weekend.

Note: With the affiliated club arrangements, we paid approximately RM$150 for the 18-hole game at A’Famosa and RM$110 for Orna. Please refer to the club’s website www.nsrcc.com.sg for more details and for the entire list of affiliated clubs in other parts of Malaysia and other countries.

Some of the changes you may not have spotted would be the replacement of gear parts of the ball return track machine and updated scoring machines. These in return had eased the stresses of the bowling staffs prior to maintaining the lanes. Ismail, 27 commented “With the new bowling lanes, it is much easier to bowl and it also helps to bring crowds in with the new image. It is also easier to maintain now.”

Apart from bringing joy to the staffs, the new lanes also brought excitement to regular keglers who have been constantly practicing with us. Jonathan Ong, 14 said “I can slide better when approaching the lanes and loves the new experience.”

We share with you pictures of the lanes before and after the upgrade that can now be enjoyed by members and guests. Thank you for your patience during the upgrading period to allow us to serve you better. So wait no longer, polish your skills and head down to SAFRA Resort Bowl to try out our new lanes.

Member found guilty of altering Golf Scorecard

Wider road to Kranji Sanctuary Golf Course (KSGC)Many of us visiting KSGC would have driven past this path many a times, the last level crossing in Singapore. When the train passes through, barriers are raised and the roadway is closed to allow the train to pass through.

With the stretch of the historic KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu) Malayan railway tracks closed on 30 June and road widening project completion, traffic jams in and out of the estate has become a thing of a past and the last rail corridor is something we can only reminisce about.

Line of dismantled railway track

Newly paved and widened Kranji road

Recently a member was alleged to have altered his scores in two tournaments played at the club, resulting in lower gross scores for both events.

Following disciplinary proceedings and supporting evidence provided by his flight mates, the club found him guilty of submitting higher scores at numerous holes instead of actual scores played.

For his breach of the club’s bye-law, the Disciplinary Committee (DC)unanimously disqualified him from the club’s tournaments, fined him $2000 and suspended him for a 2-year period.

The club would like to remind all members and guests to report any misconduct or dishonest acts within the premises as such behaviour is undesirable and would not be tolerated.

Any member caught in the act of misconduct him/herself is liable for disciplinary actions. These actions include being issued with a warning, a fine, being suspended from using the club’s facilities and termination of membership.

Team Thailand won the team leg of the 21 Asian Optimist Championships 2011

Over 100 Sailors from 20 countries came together to participate in the 21st Asian Optimist Championship Regatta for sailors aged 15 and under with NSRCC’s Sea Sports Centre hosting the team racing leg of the event on 26 July.

Despite the unpredictable weather, many braved the seas and managed to finish the race before sun down. During the team race, sailors from Singapore and Thailand stood out as the finest amongst the other competitors. The team of 20 strong Singapore sailors had their supporters constantly cheering them on, keeping their hopes up high.

Sweeping the team racing championship title this year is Thailand’s team made up of Chaninant Poonsirikut, Pongsapat PoomYam, Jirawat Jadklay, Sarawut Phetsiri and Auckarapong Chanyim. They previously won medals at the world championships in Langkawi in January this year. The Thais left no room for the Singaporeans to fight back.

Well done to all sailors!

About the EventThe Asian Optimist Championships started out in Singapore when Singapore Yachting Association (SYA) and Optimist Dinghy Association of Singapore (ODAS) inaugurated the first championships and created the continental title for the class.

This year marks the 21st edition of the Asian Optimist Championships and is a week- long event held off Singapore’s East Coast beach.

Optimist SailingThe Optimist is a small, single-handed sailing dinghy intended for use by children up to the age of 15 often used for beginners.

This special occasion served as a platform of recognition for committee members for their dedication and commitment and at the same time to acknowledge the management staff for their service contribution, which ensures that the club is running smoothly.

Unlike previous years, this year was a break from tradition with a mood for singing and some fun. LG Neo gave out the Service Excellence Awards to our best service employees. This award is given to staff that have performed extremely well in serving our members and also have been voted by them.

We extend congratulatories to the ex-committee members, Seah Chin Aik, Cynthia Lee and BG (NS) Lim Teck Yin for their support.

The event concluded on a high note with the entire crowd singing along to the tune of “Peng You” by Emil Chau.

We certainly look forward to planning next year’s soiree.

More than 300 golfers turned up with great enthusiasm on the afternoon of 9 July to celebrate SAF Day with a game of golf at Changi.

Despite the hot and humid weather, the tradition of playing an eventful golf game never failed to bring many together to show their support for our armed forces contributions to the nation. As part of the celebrations, Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Defence took time off to participate in the morning golf game despite his busy schedule. The event was officiated by Chief of Airforce MG Ng Chee Meng.

In conjunction with SAF Day celebrations, the club offered up to 10% discounts on 5 and 10 year-term membership to NSmen and members of SAFRA and HomeTeamNS for a stipulated period. To further reward members, members also enjoyed exclusive promotions on OTO lifestyle products.

Last issue, we shared with our readers the type of interchangeable lenses in the market. This issue we highlight the three fundamental elements that you can use to control exposure in your shooting and thus make you seem like a pro.

Take the camera lens as though it is your eyes. The way the lens works is just as similar to it. When we open our eyes slowly, we would never get a glimpse of what happens around us, at the same time if we were to open our eyes wide, we would be able to see more than just peeking through our closed eyes.

Likewise for a camera lens, we would have to adjust the dials to allow the shutter to move fast and also to allow the lens to open up wide. This is what we call aperture and shutter speed.

APERTURES

Apertures is the hole which the light passes through to reach the sensor or film. You can control the diameter of this hole.

Large apertures: F1.2, F1.4, F2, F2.8, F3.5, F4Small apertures: F8, F11, F16, F22, F32

These numbers are called f-stops. Moving up or down a stop, halves or doubles the light let into the camera. Rule of thumb, the smaller the f number the larger the aperture is.

Live well, eat well

Portraits, Macro PhotographyAn aperture of 3.5 to 5.6 would be the best suitable for faces or close up captures of an object.

Landscapes PhotographyAn aperture of 11 to 22 would be the best suitable. It is also best recommended for maximum sharpness.

SHUTTER SPEEDA shutter is as similar as our eyelids. The speed of a shutter would be very much alike to the speed of our eyes blinking. The longer we leave the blinds of the shutter open, the more light the camera will capture. Shutter speeds are 1/30th of a second, 1/60th of a second, 1/125th of a second, 1/250th of a second.

Moving from one speed to the next halves the amount of light that can enter the camera. Taking a picture of a fast moving subject with a slow shutter speed creates a dreamy blurred effect as opposed to using a high shutter speed, we can ‘freeze’ the action of the subject.

ISO The ISO of the camera sensor of film is a measure of how sensitive it is to light.

An ISO of 100 is used for shots taken outdoor on bright sunny days. Shooting indoors may require a higher ISO (400 to 800) depending on room lighting.

ISO helps to take pictures in poor lighting. It helps to accommodate surroundings and capture movements at high speed. The higher the ISO is, the more sensitive the camera is to lights. However, one may need to know that increasing the ISO introduces noise (grainy images).

In order to get the right exposure, we must always remember this formula:

EXPOSURE = ISO + APERTURE + SHUTTER SPEED

Shutter Speed: 1/8 secAperture: F2.8ISO: 3200

Shutter Speed: 1/125 secAperture: F8ISO: 100

Shutter Speed: 1/125 secAperture: F11ISO: 100
