SYNOPSIS

Zoe and Olivia has been best friend for a very long time and do almost everything together. They have planned to tour the world as prima ballerinas and many more. They both are also very close to the cheerleaders in their school and would maybe join the squad. Besides, Olivia has a crush on a boy name Calvin Taylor who Zoe really hated as he ruin a first date with one of guys from her school. Zoe cant stand how Olivia is so obsessed with Calvin and couldnt imagine anything worst happening.

Until , Olivia falls really sick and is said to have leukimia, cancer that usually begins in the bone marrow and results in high numbers of abnormal white blood cells. Olivia misses months of school and Zoe has to hope and have faith that her best friend could fight this disease which is killing her friend.

Things get even worse when Zoe falls in love with Calvin and lies to Olivia. The only thing that keeps Zoe moving is knowing that her best friend is going to beat this disease and everything would go back as it used to be. Unfortunately Zoe was wrong, Olivia died after falling very ill. Zoe could not imagine life with her best friend who means the whole world to her.

CHARACTERS AND CHARACTERISTICS

ZOE

Shes that girl who is alone in the crowd. She cares so incredibly deeply for her best friend. She does some things that make me cringe and that seem horrible like wishing it was Jake ( Olivias brother ) who had leukemia instead of Olivia, its grief and sorrow, that kind of thing will happen when you are extremely upset.

Olivia

Shes kind and gentle. Shes the sort of person that you just read the bad news about and then feel like youve been brought to your knees. Shes effortless to care about. I felt like she was my best friend too,the way she treated Zoe

Calvin

Hes a genuinely good guy and one who is also deeply hurting over Olivias pain. He really was very caring to Zoe. He also understands how Zoe felt after Olivias death and he tries his best to help her through.

MESSAGE IMPLIED (MORAL VALUES )

TRUE FRIENDSHIP

Zoe and Olivia has been best friends for a very long time. They have helped each other through ups and downs and are always there when they are most needed. Zoe will also remember Olivia for the rest of her life as she is and will always be one of the most meaningful person to her.

KIND HEARTEDNESS

Calvin was very kind and helpful to Jake (Olivias brother) by helping him to send his sister to the hospital. Besides,Calvin also helped Zoe with what she was going through to accept the fact that her best friend is dead.

FORGIVE

Olivia forgave Zoe even though she lied to her and did not tell her the truth after a long time.

BE WILLING TO SERVE

Zoe help to teach Olivias ballet classes when Olivia was very sick and ill and needed Zoe to do it for her.

IF YOU ARE A WRITER, HOW WOULD YOU END THE STORY?

I would have wanted them to be popular in their school as they were suppose to join the cheerleaders squad. But the main part that I would want change in this book is to end it by making sure that Olivia does not die, and she would be cancer-free after the chemotherapy and things could go back as usual. Zoe and Olivia could stay best friends till the future and travel the world together as Prima Ballerinas. Besides, they could go on holidays ,camping and many more activities together. I would also want them to get a promotion to Europe as professional ballerina and be great ballerina teachers together as a team.

CRITICS CORNER

In my opinion this book was

PositiveWe're not going to be dancers, but one day our lives are going to be amazing, Zoe. Totally amazing.

Where do I even start. I dont cry when I read books I just dont. I may feel sad and all melancholy for a bit, but I can count on one hand how many books Ive read where tears were involved. This is now one of them. If you go into this book expecting it to be a book about cancer, well its notnot really. At least it wasnt for me. Instead, its about friendship, its about love, its about sisterhood and its about growing up and dealing with the shitty things that life sends your way. Cancer just happens to be one of those shitty things. Olivia and Zoe have been best friends since the day Olivia asked for help with a barrette before a dance recital. Thirteen years of growing up together, having each others backs and basically becoming sisters have passed. So when Olivia gets a diagnosis that rocks their world, Zoe is determined to be there for her with positivity and support. Its hard not to take a book like this personallyto turn page after page and not feel every emotion that these characters are going through because almost all of us know someone who has been affected by cancer. What I found unique about this story was that we see everything from Zoes point of view. We see her dealing with and watching her friend be ravaged by something that she cant do a single thing about, and that has to be one of the hardest things to accept.

What I loved the most about this story was that the bare bones of it, despite everything going on around these characters, is about friendship and how amazing it is. Its lovely to see a book that focuses on positive relationships and shows us characters who love each other unconditionally, yeah they may get mad at each other, but at the end of the day that doesnt change their love for each other. It was also amazing to see the support system for these girls. Not only their parents, because they were a big part of it, but the other girls at school. Zoe never really formed that true friendship connection with many other girls but regardless, there wasnt a mean girl in the bunch, which in itself was refreshing to see. Mia and Stacey and even Emma while secondary characters to the main friendship were absolutely a positive addition to the story, and I especially loved Mias tenacity and determination to not let Zoe push her away permanently. I mentioned the parents above, and I have to say they were wonderfully done here. Zoes parents in that they offered Zoe someone to share her frustrations and disappointments with and yet they still were able to give her some good advice Its a marathon, not a sprint. that we saw her use later on. We also got to see quite a bit of Olivias parents the effect from Zoes point of view that the illness was having on them, not only as a family, but as a couple. The stress it was having on their relationship and the different thoughts on how best to care for Olivia seen from Zoes eyes was enlightening.

And yes, there was a teeny tiny bit of a romance and Im not even sure I would call it that, but I have to say that I loved how patient and understanding Calvin was with Zoe. At times she may have been using him as an outlet to forget all the bad things going on, but I have to commend the maturity that he was written with, because despite Zoe being all over the place emotionally, he never really gives up on her and if it came down to it, he would and will be there for her in a heartbeat when she needs him. And I think Kantor uses that to show us that life goes on, the world continues to spin and things continue to happen even though all we may want to do is freeze time and stop to cherish everything weve had, I just wish that she had pushed herself to let Calvin in a bit more. However, we would have missed Zoes character growth had she done that her realizations that there is hope for some happiness and a future and its okay to lean on others when you need to are wonderful to see.

NEGATIVE

Gah! I hate how romance has come to be an almost mandatory part of every book. So much so, that sometimes I feel like it takes away from the central plot and becomes distracting, and thats just sad. Not every book needs a love story, you know.

Im sorry you didnt enjoy Maybe One Day more, but Id be lying if I said Im not kind of relieved, seeing a slightly negative review for it. Im currently reading a book that almost everybody I know has loved, but I just cant seem to get into it, and Ive been debating over how to write a negative review for such a well-loved book. And now I know.
