LITU’s History

On the Occasion of The 50th Anniversary of Trout Unlimited

This history is comprised of some anecdotal notes from those who remember as well as a catalogue of past Paumonok Newsletters. I have also incorporated notations in date order of events and other trivia that have come from the Chapter’s scrap book and other sources.

Editor’s note: I joined TU in either 1978 or 1979 after attending a casting clinic at Connetquot. I went to a few meetings in Bethpage but never got involved. Life got busy and I drifted away from meetings (not fishing) to return in 2001. I have served on the Board for 4 years and edited the newsletter for 3. I took on this project when TU asked Chapters to submit a list of their greatest accomplishments for the 50th Anniversary web site. Any comments or additions to this history can be sent to [email protected].

Anecdotes & Research From TU National upon inquiring about our original charter: Andy Snyder went through the records we have in Arlington and reported the following: After combing through the Long Island Chapter (069) records, it appears that the chapter was first chartered in 1970, but was then disbanded due to lack of membership. The chapter was then re-started in late 1972 with Salvatore Palatucci as the chapter president. Salvatore was based out of Bethpage, NY at this time until he was replaced as the Chapter President by Jim Holley in 1975. All we have in the hard files is the correspondence between Mr. Palatucci and Executive Director Gytenbeek regarding the early years of the Long Island Chapter. Unfortunately we don't have the original charter document or welcome letter clarifying the dates. Hope this helps. Bryan K. As they remember it: From Peter Dubno: Our chapter held the Second (ever) National Conservation Banquet in all of Trout unlimited history with the help of Tom Pero who was the editor of Trout Magazine. It launched us on a National Banquet program that has continued until now with our 28th National Conservation Banquet. We have raised tens of thousands of dollars for conservation with the program. LITU started Trout in the Classroom here on Long Island. We have shown The Way of the Trout video, promoting TU, probably more times than any other chapter in order to educate the public to trout conservation. More from Peter Dubno: I spoke to Theodore Powers, our first President and founder (He still advertises in Paumonok!). I asked him about some of the early days and the formation of the chapter: The Long Island Chapter of Trout Unlimited started with a Long Islander named Theodore (Ted) Powers who at the time, (1970-73?) was a member of the Theodore Gordon Fly Fishers. TGF met in Manhattan and he had heard of Trout Unlimited, and wanted to start a fly fisher’s organization on the Island. He contacted National and received from them, the instruction he required for starting a chapter. To advertise the first meeting, at Howard Johnson’s in Plainview, he put out flyers that he photocopied at his own office and placed them in various outdoors and sporting goods shops. The first meeting consisted of five people, which included Ted Powers, Henry Prussen, and Sal Palatucci. The other two names cannot be recalled. The first regular meetings were held in Bethpage Long Island, at the St. Martin of Tours Church. To give local purpose, the fledgling chapter members met with Gil Bergen of the then Southside Sportman’s Club to help with clean-ups on the Connetquot River. The Long Island chapter of TU spawned the Art Flick Chapter and the NYC Chapter. The exact dates would be when their charters were formed. LITU was the only chapter in the NYC region until these chapters were formed and were populated with LITU members on a geographic basis. This was done in the early 1980's. In 1986, as I recall, the roadway where Sunrise Hwy and Montauk Highway almost come together had to be modified as the old roadway was dangerous in its configuration. One accomplishment of early LITU is that the Chapter helped convince the NYS DOT to build the current "Oakdale Merge" in front of the entrance to Connetquot rather than taking about 150 feet of frontage from Connetquot River SP Preserve to build it. This was in 1986. From Paul Sequira: I tracked Paul down and found him happily fishing in Florida. He mentioned some ups and downs of the early LITU and referred me to Sal Palatucci: Its nice to hear from LITU. I was involved from 1973 through 1981, so long ago and I no longer have any materials from the Chapter in my possession to jog my memory. However, when I retired in 1992 I gave carton of old Paumonoks to Sal Palatucci. As you know Sal is the founder of LITU-2 as the first attempt, although valiant didn’t catch on. Why not contact Sal and see if he still has that box? Good luck and I’d love to see a copy

of the history when you are finished. Best Regards, Paul. From Sal Palatucci: I left that box at my Mother’s in NY when I moved to Virginia. I’ll see if I can find it next time I am up visiting. What Paul was alluding to regarding the founding of LITU-2: Ted Powers originally tried to start the chapter but it didn't last past 2 or 3 meetings. In the meantime, I was a school teacher and joined TU and was assigned the LITU chapter (in Syosset somewhere). I couldn't find the chapter and ended up participating in an upstate chapter in Brewster. The president there, Dick Taleur, of fly fishing book fame, encouraged me to re-start LITU which I eventually did and the rest is history. Just thinking about that time creates a flood of memories for me so I'm confident if you can find them the re-founding leaders can fill in a lot of blanks! One small story, but a critical one: we had no money to speak of to run the chapter early on but after our 4th or 10th meeting, a member came up to me and made a private, $100 donation which was like a transfusion. We were not only broke, but I think we averaged 11 attendees for the first 6 months, so that was a confirmation we were on the right track at least. The man's name is Izzie Jacobson, by the way. He was or is a dentist and one of many hidden stories about our founding. It's kind of startling looking back how much has been accomplished by the hundreds of men and women who have stepped up to the plate for Trout conservation and the Long Island Chapter of Trout Unlimited. More from Sal: Henry Prussen (wife Marge) was my VP back when, and he might have lots of stuff for you to check out. I know he comes to the National Banquet every year, so Pete Dubno probably has his number or email. One short story there: We did our first stream improvement project as a new Chapter on the Carman’s River where we moved big rocks into a long slow flat section with no holding capacity. To move the rocks, Henry built this 2x4x8' stretcher with rope webbing that was amazingly strong. So there we were that one day; our pile of boulders on one side, cradle in hand, and a dead river to fix! Unfortunately, none of us had a clue where to put the rocks! I can't say it was Keystone Cops, but I do remember us busting our nuts hauling them out on this flat with someone saying: let's put it here and another saying “No over there!” I think if someone had taped us, it would still be very funny! The ultimate irony though is that it took a lot of convincing by me to get the man who managed the Carman’s to let us do this project, which he did. But some months later, as I recall, he got complaints from duck hunters that the boulders screwed up the river (or maybe he just went down to the river to see

14

what we did) and in short order, they were all removed! God that was funny. Anyway, I'm sure Henry will remember many of those first 2 year exploits, so if you can hook up with him, he may give you a jump start into LITU years 1 & 2. Ed: Sal, What jobs did you have in the early days of LITU? Sal: I was President first, then pretty much every other chapter job, including co-newsletter editor for 2 years with a great guy who passed away, Dave Watt. Then in 1980 I got a call one day from National TU offering me a full time job in Washington, which I took and ended up working for TU for 13 years which was an incredible experience. My first position was as National Banquet Manager, then Special Projects Manager and ultimately Membership Director for the organization. Up until I turned 50, I used to joke that literally half of my life was devoted to Trout Unlimited! Along the way I got to meet and get to know so many giants in our conservation universe including TU's founders, and notables like Art Flick, Lefty Kreh, Sparce Grey Hackle, Gary Borger, Leon Chandler, Ernie Schweibert, as well as many of the owners/CEO's of equipment manufacturers like Sage and Orvis (all the current chapter equipment discount programs came out of that period by the way), and of course the indomitable, Gil Bergin and many more. It was quite the honor and quite the rush. Plus I ended up going to Auctioneering school as part of the National Banquet Program which was a real blast experience. I used to come up to do our National Banquet/Auction until about 5 years ago. Now my closest LI friend, Mike Greco does it, as you know. An interview with Henry Prussen I found Henry Prussen, as active as ever, at a meeting - still loving and caring for his river, the Connetquot. I asked him a few questions: Ed: When did you join TU? Henry Prussen: Before the Chapter was formed, probably the year it was created. I joined the Chapter later. Ed: What was your earliest memory of the beginning? HP: The Southside Sportsman’s Club was a closed and private place, one we got to peer into as we rode by, but never get inside. Then some things happened and the State took it over with the intention of making it a park. The biggest thrill for me, after all those years on the outside was receiving a written invitation from NY State asking us to come and give our opinion about the location of fishing sites on the Connetquot – and the Nissequogue. I recall driving through the gate for the first time and looking out instead of gazing in while thinking we will be the first locals to fish this amazing place. Gil Bergen walked us to all the fishing sites and the hatchery and the following week Larry Myer

15

gave a tour of the stream and ponds including a canoe ride. It was overwhelming after all those years of exclusiveness to know that this was now ours, all of ours. (Henry is a long time friend of Gil Bergen and they enjoy fishing and shooting sports together, as well as each other’s company.) Ed: What LITU jobs did you have in the early years? HP: I was Vice President for two years and Membership Director for one but was on the Board for 10 years. We also worked with other conservation organizations back then and I was the LITU representative for Y.O.U. (Your Organizations United) which included members from the Great South Bay Water Fowlers, Garden Clubs, Horse Clubs, Audubon, and the Decoy Carvers and Collectors. Sal and I worked on stopping the Southwest Sewer District Project and, along with Gene Novikoff, were able to close down the duck farm on the Carman’s. Ed: Stream improvement projects? HP: One I recall was the work we did on the Carman’s in 1976. I made two 6 foot long stretchers with rope and netting so we could move the heavy lumber and rocks. With 4 members on each stretcher we could life a heavy load, even in waders. The work was directed by DEC as I recall and we built dams and riffles. If I am not mistaken someone had taken about 20 color slides of the activity, see if you can figure out where that guys is! Ed: Tell us about the Conservation Camp Program and your role in funding all those kids. HP: The camp program began in 1977; it was Sal Palatucci’s idea. From that time until 1983 over 20 boys and girls attended summer camp on us. First they went to the environmental camp in DeBruce, NY and then, starting in 1993 we switched to Rogers Ecology Workshop in Shelbrooke, NY. Almost every year the Chapter sends 2 teens to camp. The scholarship is named the Henry Prussen Jr. Conservation Scholarship Fund in honor of my son who participated with me in stream clean-ups, restoration work as well as casting clinics and fly tying. Ed: What else do you recall? HP: There were several related groups – Fresh Water Anglers of Long Island, Long Island Fly Tyers (Boycott Worms, Use Flies decal) and Long Island Fly Rodders. We went to shows at Roosevelt Raceway (featuring Leonard Rods with Ron Kusse), at the South Shore Mall and the Nassau Coliseum along with our Fly Casting Clinics at the state parks. When the American Fly Fishing Museum was looking for a home, they came with their board to visit Connetquot and the Nissequogue. They were very impressed with the locations as well as proximity to transportation and lodging but the State was on austerity that year and couldn’t be open the number of days they

required. We were all very disappointed. Sal put it best: “It would have been some feather in collective cap.” Ed: Henry also brought us the February 12, 1976 edition of the Long Island Fisherman with a two page article with photos by Ron Miller titled: Environmental Action on a Trout Stream. It talks about the work TU volunteers are doing to make the Nissequogue, Connetquot and Carman’s better for all. In addition he gave us the Pre Season Issue of Fly Fisherman Magazine (Jan – Feb) 1980 which has a four page article featuring all three streams: The Connetquot by Edd Monoco, The Nissequogue by Maurice Mellon and the Carman’s by Craig Woods. Both will be added to our Chapter Scrap book. From Al Westbrook My tenure as President of the LITU Chapter was 1991-1993. I can't remember what I had for breakfast much less 16 years ago! At that time I had been Secretary for years and afterward was Secretary a number of years more. I do remember, however, working with Clarence Ware, Director of Caleb Smith Park, and began the first of many "kid's clinics". The program was met with much success and, I believe, lives on today. One other accomplishment by the Chapter at the time was the installation of "Jersey barriers" on Vet's Memorial Highway where it crosses the Connetquot River. We were concerned that contamination at the headwaters of the Conny would not only ruin the River for a very long time but we felt that, say an oil truck or such, could go off the road into the river and the contamination might reach the hatchery before it could be dealt with. So getting the barriers in place was an important hedge against disaster. I certainly wish I could remember more but I hope this helps a little. At that time I was President and board member of the Yankee Gun Club and Secretary for the Long Island Flyrodders as well as active in LITU so I recall that time as being very busy and my time as President very enjoyable. From Brian Nazinitsky I started fly fishing around 1975, when I worked for Herman's World of Sporting Goods, in the hunting and fishing department. Mostly I fished salt water, out of Brooklyn, nearly every week on the Flamingo III. I was only into fly fishing a bit and wanted to join a conservation organization. I joined TU around 1984 (Could have been a couple of years before or after; seems like forever). One week, I read an article by Nick Karas in Newsday about TU and he mentioned the monthly meetings. I attended a couple and then Bob Mass mentioned he was looking for someone to take over his job editing the Paumonok. I took on the job. In those days (pre-computer) everything was typed, laid-up by hand, with a drafting board, T-square and glue. What a job! I had also inherited a LITU archive box from Bob which I passed on to someone else, but can't remember who.

Naturally the fly fishing bug bit, and I spent my warm weather weekends alternating between fly fishing and sailing, which is my other pastime. At some point after becoming editor of the Paumonok I also became a board member, and part of the banquet committee; funny how it grabs you. At one of the banquets I met Art Stoliar, who was involved with Theodore Gordon Fly Fishers and a program Trout in the Classroom. After speaking to his wonderful wife and him, we set up a program in my school, which today is one of the largest, oldest and most successful. My involvement in TU has waned a bit; children, work and other commitments and organizations. The good news is my older son has a great interest in fishing, and now is interested in learning to fly fish. He is involved with the Boy Scouts, and hopefully the chapter will work with his troop as well. As far as my favorite LITU memory the holiday/open house meetings were always a favorite, along with the banquets. Renewing, friendships and catching up always seemed the best part. A recollection from Lou Ruggerio - A NIGHT AT THE OPERA In the early seventies, LITU monthly meetings were held in the basement of St. Martin of Tours Church in Bethpage. The official meetings began at 8:00 and ended about 9:30. Die hard members would begin arriving in the Church parking lot around 7:00. They would spend the time by their cars and trucks sharing fish stories or fly tying tips until the religious education classes were dismissed from the Church basement, where our meetings were held. Once the kids vacated the basement, the group would rush in to set up the twenty or so folding chairs and the officers table. Henry Prussen and his wife would set up the coffee urn and the Dunkin’ Donuts boxes for the after meeting refreshments. The 7:30 arrivals would mill around continuing their conversations that had begun in the parking lot. Meeting numbers tended to be small for those beginning meetings. My first active involvement in LITU was as the program chairman. With my background in education, I figured the best way to increase member interest in our monthly meetings would be to organize a structured meeting with an activity to suit different aspects of our diverse group. With the okay of our board we introduced an ‘early-bird’ tying session for those who arrived before the 8:00 meeting. A business meeting would follow and a feature visual presentation would take us to an exotic trout location or highlight a local habitat. We would end with refreshments and conversation. The last order of business was to refold the chairs and return to basement to its original state. Once we inaugurated the ‘early-bird’ tying session, the parking lot group turned into a ‘Chinese fire drill’ once the kids vacated the basement! A tying table was set up before anything else, and a member tier would begin a simple tie. As time went on we had exhausted the talents of our members and I decided to reach out to well known tiers who

Page 18: A Brief History, Anecdotes, Newsletters and Notes …...2009/07/31  · 13 of the history when you are finished. Best Regards, Paul. From Sal Palatucci: I left that box at my Mother’s

18

would volunteer their time for one of our tying sessions. Being a novice in the 70’s to trout fishing, I had to rely on recommendations from some of our older members. The first suggestion that I received was for a tier that lived about an hour north of NYC. The announcement was published in the Paumonok before the next meeting. There was much excitement and enthusiasm for this gentleman. Again, the teacher in me required that I call him the week of our meeting, going over the time (7:30), the format (tying first) and most importantly, the directions to our meeting place. The big night finally came. Our first ‘name’ tier. The size of our turnout required more than twice as many folding chairs as usual. Members rarely seen and some that came as a result of a brief mention in Nick Karras’ Newsday column assured our Board of Directors that we were on to something Big! At 7:15 I began pacing the parking lot hoping our guest would arrive before the start of our tying session in order to set up properly. I ran downstairs a few minutes later thinking that he may have come in through another entrance. 7:30 came, the tying table was bare and I frantically checked the parking lot for our guest tier. 7:45 and I checked the parking lot, again no tier. The mumbling grew louder at 8:00. At 8:15 our dejected Board began its business meeting. The new comers seemed confused by our lack of ‘structure’ and our apparently dull committee reports. I dreaded giving the program chairman’s report. As I stood up awaiting a barrage of barbless hooks, in staggers our guest fly tier! The crowd roared its approval at his arrival. Apparently he had gotten lost after crossing the Throgs Neck Bridge. Doing what came natural for an upstate fly tier, he proceeded to stop at a number of Long Island saloons to get directions to Bethpage! As the group quieted down and the concluding time of our meeting approached, I tried to salvage what was left of our guest tier evening. We huddled in the corner and he assured me he could still do his demonstration. He told the group to gather around him (I hoped not too close since many had a long distance to drive home after breathing his ‘cologne’)!!! As we gathered around, he reaches into his pocket and pulls out a size 14 hook, a spool of thread and some tying material. He proceeds to tie a Quill Gordon dry fly in his fingers to the astonishment of all that remained in the Church basement! For the remainder of the evening he dazzled us with his tying tricks. He generously donated the flies to an impromptu raffle which definitely helped our anemic treasury. All of our members and visitors left satisfied. The meeting was a memorable one for those of us who knew that it started out like a Marx Brothers movie. The numbers attending our meetings did increase as time went on. But, I researched our guest tiers more thoroughly from that evening on. We were fortunate to have Mary Dette, Dave Whitlock, Lefty Kreh, Boston Globe sports writer, Paul Kukonnen, Hank Leonhardt and Bill Luzardo of L&L Products and a host of others join us in those early years. But that was the night that I wondered if any thing would go right for our chapter. Fortunately LITU has prospered in the succeeding years into a diversified and vibrant organization dedicated to promoting and protecting our trout and their habitat. Good luck as you go forward.

LITU Top 5 Accomplishments for www.TU50.org Submitted in April 2009 to www.tu50.org (limited to 250 character/spaces) #1 - Founded in 1970 by Ted Powers and the momentum was picked up by Sal Palatucci. It grew to over 150 members and began doing stream work as well as educating the public via The Way of the Trout viewings and our annual Casting Clinics which continue. #2 - LITU was formed as three great trout streams were moving from private to public holdings: the Connetquot, Nissequogue & Carman’s. LITU worked to see that these river parks were managed and enhanced, protecting them from intrusions by other projects. #3 - LITU grew to over 700 & held the 2nd Conservation Banquets in TU history. In 1983/4, we birthed the NYC & the Art Flick Chapters. Success due to dedicated members - Peter Dubno, Boyd Shockley, Bob Maas, Sol Harz, John Fischer and predecessors. #4 - Support of Esopus, Beamoc, Croton, Schoharie - Milburn Creek, Orowoc Creek, Carlls River, Wantagh Creek, Nissequogue & Massapequa Creek, (once the best brook trout fishery in the East); Trout in the Classroom under J. Fischer has 25 schools. #5 - Surveyed Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor for brook trout migration; Active on Delaware River Commission, in NYSCTU; thermal monitoring LI streams; Adopt Serviceman, Veterans Outreach & Scout Programs under presidents J. Plackis, R. Lutz and J. Mooney. What is left to do? Plenty. Brook trout restoration efforts & building the capacity of our Trout in the Classroom program; continue to educate public & young conservationists (H. Prussen Jr. Scholarship); remain vigilant over VPN, Didymo & invasives of all types.

A Catalog of Paumonok Newsletter

Vol. 1 – Vol. 36 Editors note: I have tried to list the contents of each newsletter that we have as well as the officers and directors during each newsletter year (September to June) . In some cases I have bolded an entry as I felt it had some significance and noted when, for example, a new advertiser appeared. I have tried to be consistent in this but since the project took about 6 months; I varied at times based on keenness of mind or just laziness. What I had hoped to accomplish was to have both this index and a preserved archive of our newsletters for the sake of posterity. There remain some missing issues, especially the early years when I am told the newsletter was more of a letter. I hope who ever follows will continue to seek out the missing issues and amend both the collection and the index. There may be some interesting projects that a person with time on his or her hands and a knack for nostalgia may want to pursue. For example there are many short stories and articles on techniques and various rivers, flies of the month, etc. that could be put into compendiums for joy or market. There are mile markers of how the organization has progressed, regressed and grown that a historian may find interesting to write about. And, if we somehow let others know that this archive is available, perhaps some grad student or writer would find the flow of our little organization of interest. Even if none of these come to be, it has been a personal joy and pleasure to relive our history through this process. Tom McCoy 7/30/09 Special thanks to those who dug into their basements and provided the source material for what follows – Henry Prussen, Lou Ruggerio, Sol Harz, John Fischer, Boyd Shockley and Peter Dubno .
