In1914GertrudeVanderbiltWhitneyopenedtheWhitneyStudioanexhibitionspaceforyoungandinnovativeartistsnearherownstudioinGreenwichVillage.Thefollowingyear,sheorganizedtheFriendsoftheYoungArtists,whichwouldbecomeby1918TheWhitneyStudioClub,hiringJulianaForceasitsdirector.AftertheMetropolitanMuseumofArtrejectedhergiftin1929of500plusworksprimarilybycontemporaryAmericanartists,shedecidestoopenTheWhitneyMuseumofAmericanArtin1930,whereitwillremainatthatlocationuntil1954,whenitmovestemporarytoWest53rdStreet.OpeningintheWhitneyMuseum’soriginallocationonWest8thStreettenyearslateristheNewYorkStudioSchoolofDrawing,PaintingandSculpturefoundedbyMercedesMatter,artist,educatorandoneoftheFoundingMembersofAmericanAbstractArtists.
