A Brief History of Wine in Texas Grapes have grown naturally on the banks of rivers and streams for thousands of years in the wonderful land we now call Texas. However, it was the missionaries of the Spanish Empire that were the first to plant vineyards intended for winemaking near present day El Paso. Other immigrants from Europe came to Texas later in the 19th Century and brought their own grape varietals and began planting vineyards throughout Texas. These vineyards helped to cultivate a wine culture in Texas that would thrive until prohibition and be reborn in the late 1970’s. The most interesting figure in the history of Texas wines is Thomas Volney Munson. Any discussion of Texas or French wine would be incomplete without mention of Thomas Volney Munson. In fact, were it not for T.V. Munson, there might not be a French wine industry to discuss at all. Munson lived in Denison, Texas and was a horticulturist and prestigious breeder of native American grapes. Munson was fascinated by native American grapes, spending his entire adult life developing hybrids of both wine and table grapes while cross-breeding and grafting the vines. This experience in the development of grapevines grafted onto transplanted rootstock would soon be of critical importance. Late in the 19th century, Phylloxera (a native American aphid like insect that feeds on grape roots) had made its way to France and began decimating the vineyards, crippling the French wine industry. France’s wine production dropped to 25% of the pre-Phylloxera production levels and caused a financial crisis there. T.V. Munson had the solution and began working with the French government grafting rootstock from the native American vines that had developed a resistance to Phylloxera over the centuries. This saved the much celebrated French Wine industry and Munson was awarded the Legion of Honor, Chevalier du Merite Agricole, by the French Government and has several statues dedicated to him throughout villages in France. Many years after Munson and Prohibition, the Texas Wine Renaissance began in the 1970’s with the aid of several universities. Texas Tech University Alum helped invigorate the West Texas wine industry and established Llano Estacado Winery. In the early 1980’s, the University of Texas established a vineyard near Fort Stockton that is now St. Genevive Winery, the largest wine producer in the state. By 1992, Texas Wineries were producing over one million gallons of wine in 27 bonded wineries. By 2008, that number had grown to 158 wineries and the Texas Legislature designated eight appellations in the state, including the Texas High Plain appellation, with Lubbock as the hub and focal point. With this wine menu, we are celebrating the long Texas tradition of wine making, reaching back to its Spanish pioneers, European Settlers and the visionary Texans that have brought our wines into the 21st Century.

A Brief History of Wine in Texas

Grapes have grown naturally on the banks of rivers and streams for thousands of years in the wonderful land we now call Texas. However, it was the missionaries of the Spanish Empire that were the first to plant vineyards intended for winemaking near present day El Paso. Other immigrants from Europe came to Texas later in the 19th Century and brought their own grape varietals and began planting vineyards throughout Texas. McPherson has been a vital name to the Texas Wine industry since the 1970’s working with many wineries and pioneering viticulture in the Texas High Plains. McPherson continues to lead the way with their winery in

Lubbock (that was converted from a Coca~Cola bottling plant) and with their promotion of Mediterranean wines. They have married tradition, knowledge, and innovation to create some spectacular wines.

Llano Estacado began in the 1970’s with help from a horticulturalist from Texas Tech University who believed that the Texas Climate was ideal for producing excellent wine. Llano made a splash at the San Francisco Fair with a

“Double Gold” for its 1984 Chardonnay putting Texas on the map for wine. Ever since, Llano Estacado has been building on that tradition while becoming the best selling premium winery in the state of Texas.

that produces high quality grapes. Cap*Rock has won over 400 awards for its wines. Recently Cap*Rock

was purchased and with the guidance of the new owners, it is quickly raising the standard of Texas Wines.

Landon Winery’s History: “Following in the family tradition of his German grandfather in Missouri who made his own wine from grapes cultivated on his farm, our winemaking experience goes back to 1989 as vintner Bob Landon tried his hand at

making wine in the basement of their Dutch Colonial home in Kansas City, Missouri. Fifteen years later in 2004 they started their winery business in Texas. We’ve come a long way since the basement, winemaking experiments in small batches to be a large Texas winery (with our stainless steel tanks and American & French oak barrels).

Landon Winery has earned hundreds of medals, awards, and recognitions for its wines.”

Family owned & operated, Pedernales Cellars is dedicated to world-class wines, sustainable practices, and Texas Hill Country hospitality. Visitors can tour the underground winemaking cellar, then relax with a glass of

“Naturally beautiful, our fertile vineyards provide an abundance of premium fruit for fine Brennan wines. Geographically, our vines reside at the junction of the state’s two most acclaimed winemaking regions, the legendary

Hill Country and the Texas High Plains. The rolling topography, rich soil, warm days, cool nights and a semi-dry growing season yields grapes of spectacular color and flavor. Our two main vineyards produce a diverse selection of

varietals that thrive in the Lone Star climate – classics like Cabernet and syrah grow in Comanche Vineyard, and you’ll find rising stars like Viognier and Nero d’Avola on our Newburg vines.”

Wine Advocate 94: "A great effort from Far Niente in this truly magnificent vintage, with its similarities to 2002, the Far Niente 2012 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon has a dense purple color, plenty of structure and aging potential, and an impressive inner core of sweet crème de cassis fruit, licorice and background vanilla. This wine is still very much an infant in its evolution, and should keep for 20-30 years. Many 2012s are excessively generous, open-knit and fleshy, but this is holding a lot back. And wow, it is "locked and loaded." I wouldn't be surprised to see this wine increase in score in about 5-10 years, and actually merit an even higher score. Bravo!"
