Who has to the peacock given

His feathers shot with shining eyes

Which scatters light of heaven?

And when he spreads his tail fanwise

And dances with such wonderful grace

Does not in vision rise

The beauty of Lord Krishna's face?

Sleek and mobile hues that crowd

When sunset seeps through folds of cloud:-

Of sapphires, the liquid blaze:

The glinting and luminous replies

Of girls' lampblack painted eyes-

Of all rich tints, the essence is

caught in peacock-feather eyes.

O proud, blessed peacock- feather eyes!

That rose in peerless abandon

from Krishna's twisted 'knot of hair'

in his romance you had your share-

what breath-taking images crowd

in your each fresh-revealing shine

-of his irresistible flute-notes

-of beautiful women loved in song!

PEACOCK FEATHER EYES

The stillness of the night, the nip in the air, the cold winds, the dark blanket of the sky which enclosed

everything in it except the little twinkling stars who had something to say.

I felt as though they all wanted to say something to me, may be, the answer to my unquenched thirst

which was buried deep inside my heart. May be, they wanted to say that I could let the night embrace me. May

be, I could vent out all my grief to the darkness. I could feel that the night was not so cold anymore, so dark

anymore. May be, after losing everything, I could just embrace the darkness of the night and forget the grief of

losing someone close to my heart…Priyanka Walad

Some customs, holidays, and traditions are very hard to trace to their beginnings. Why April fools' Day?

and how did it originate? - has been explained in several ways, but no one is quite sure.

First of all, there is a day like our April Fool's day in nearly all parts of the world. It is a day when practical

jokes are played on friends and neighbours, like sending them on foolish errands or tricking them into doing silly

things.

It is believed that our April Fools ' Day started with the French. When the calendar was reformed, the first

nation to adopt the reformed calendar was France. Charles IX ordered, in 1564, that the year should begin with st

the 1 of January. Until then, New Year's visits and the exchange of New Year gifts has been associated with the st

1 of April.

stNow, after Charles had issued his decree, all that became associated with the 1 of January. But there

were many people who objected to the change and refused to go along with it. The other people made fun of

them for this. They did it this way: they sent them mock gifts, they pretended to be visiting them, they invited st

them to mock New Year's celebrations all on the 1 of April. In other words, they were April Fools- people who st

still felt April 1 was the beginning of the New Year. Also, the custom of fooling somebody on this day started with

the mock gifts and celebrations they had with these people.

TAKE TIME

When miners go out in search of diamonds and gem stones, they don't collect all the stones lying there. There, they pick only those which stand out among the rest. Even this crude diamond cannot be labelled as the leader of the stones. They are naturally made. After proper refining, polishing and all that procedure, the aesthetic value of diamond increases by leaps and bounds. It then shines majestically making the trespassers force a look at it. Before, refining and all, the crude diamond looks more or less like the stones adjacent to it. But now after these painful processes, it outcasts everyone and everything.

It exactly is the case with great leaders. How true it is that great leaders are not born, but they are made. Nobody comes but as a multi-talented; highly skilled person from a mother's womb. They sharpen their skills; work hard towards their goal.

Leadership quality, like any other skill, is an art. As all the painters and artists can't be Michelangelo or Leonardo Da Vinci, every Tom, Dick and Harry can't be a great leader. Once a leader, the person has to guide the entire section or entire group of people. He cannot be a person of coward or timid character. He must possess strong will and must be very active. Good speaking skills and self-reliance must be his weapons. He needs to be a friend, philosopher and a guide, a torch bearer and a friend. He must not only be trustworthy and honest but also must have the ability to encourage the people he is leading, so as to increase their productivity.

LEADERS ARE NOT BORN, BUT MADEI firmly believe that-

'A team being led without a leader, Is like a boat sailing on dry land.'

He is no fool, who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose. - Jim Elliot 12

A person sitting in an A.C. chamber, ordering the employees or the people under him to meet his needs, proclaiming himself as the boss - to call such people as 'leader' would be sin in itself. They ruin the very meaning of a true leader. They must not be bossy or sarcastic or move around with the notion that they rule the world. A person with such authority must use his power for good.

It must be remembered that with power comes more responsibility. Being the leader of a group, a person enjoys power; the need to motivate his subordinates to ensure that they do rightful duties is his responsibility.

Gandhiji, the father of our nation, was a mediocre person throughout his life. But there was also a time when he led one billion people of this country teaching his principle of non-violence and truthfulness. Was he tagged as a leader by birth? No! he was a common man leading a common life. The incidents of Dandy March shall remain etched in our mind forever. Similarly, there are many who have motivated and changed many people's life for betterment. Mata Amrutanandamayi is an exceptional spiritual leader. Also is Dalai Lama. You also have Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Swami Vivekananda…., the list is indeed endless.

So, as I said, there are no guide books or any hard and fast rules that describe how a leader should be. On the whole to be a leader or to lead a a group of people is a great the ability to change and challenge the odd.

Abhiram Varma Roll No.-30, XII D

It is ten past midnight. I'm surrounded by huge books, trying my best to understand and memorize every word written in them, for tomorrow is a big day for me. Tomorrow is my exam, and passing it will give me the title of 'The Judge of a Court of Law', an honourable title indeed. I have been appearing for the exam since the last two years, but failed each time. I have worked much harder this year, but because of all the previous failures in my life, my self-confidence has become very low. Nevertheless, I have tried my best, and hope to pass tomorrow.

My daughter has been a constant source of support and inspiration for me. She is the apple of my eye, a darling angel in my life. I have been raising her up on my own since the last fifteen years, and she has grown up to be a fine young woman. She is the one who encouraged me to go on trying for the examination, despite failures. If not for her, I would have given up long ago.

Suddenly, I felt my cell phone vibrate. I saw that it was a friend who was calling me at that ungodly hour. Not very happy at that, I picked up the phone and said hello. 'Hello!,' came the excited whisper of my friend from the other side. 'Mate, listen! I'm really not prepared too well for this examination, even four of our other pals aren't.' So, we had met at the club in the evening, and we decided on several things, if you know what I mean.' 'Well, no buddy, I really cannot understand what you mean.' I replied. To this he said, 'How dumb are you? What I mean is we are all friends, right? We are doing this together. Suppose you hear me cough while writing the paper tomorrow, it means that you are supposed to look at me, and I will tell you which question I want you to answer, is that alright?' Now, I was scandalized. We are all lawyers, and we cheat in the exam which will declare us a judge? How disgusting is that! I responded angrily, 'Have you no shame? First of all, you could have studied well instead of hanging around in a club on the eve of the exam. And secondly, you are a lawyer. If you don't follow the law, who will?' He groaned in disappointment. 'Oh! I knew it was no use telling you about our plan, Goodnight!' saying this, he hung up.

Their plans made me angry. Cheating to pass an exam is, I believe, really wrong. It is not a very big deal if you fail, it is definitely better than copying, at least. But I was ashamed to accept that their scheme would work. They would pass

with flying colours, and I, I will probably fail again, and will see the disappointment in my daughter's eyes, while all of them will be successful. As the night proceeded, I became more and more greedy. I started thinking along their lines. How can it be wrong if it makes my daughter happy? Strained by my thoughts, I fell asleep, tensed about the coming morning.

After rising from a troubled sleep, I did not realize how the time passed. My daughter drove me to the exam hall, and wished me luck. I couldn't face her. I proceeded towards the hall, and saw my friends. They were probably scared of me, wondering if I will blow their cover. I had not planned on doing that, though, especially as I was getting attracted to copying and cheating myself. Really, how childish all that was!

The examination started, and an hour got over in what seemed like a few moments. The exam was not really tough, but mere my nervousness made me feel like, I was doing everything wrong. I wondered how the invigilator missed all the signals my friends sent to each other. Little did I know that he was a sharp man with keen eyes? He had observed and noticed everything in the first half hour, and as the second hour got over, he caught two of my friends cheating red-handed. That was the end of it. They were all caught eventually, and were sent out of the hall. Relieved as I was, I wrote the paper with very less tension in my mind.

As I met my daughter outside the hall, I told her everything, and what she said made me happier than anything else. She said she was more proud of me for not copying than she will be if and when I pass, which I did. Never will I forget that experience and my daughter's support. Indeed, truth will set you free.

It is said that variety is the spice of life and if all the people in this world would have had the same sets of thoughts, then there wouldn't have been any differences among people, which divides and causes rifts.

But the fact is that people have different aspects of looking at things. It depends on us whether we perceive things to be good or bad.

It all comes down to a matter of “consciousness” apparently. If you've got it, you have a running commentary going through your head all day, you have an abstract idea of yourself in the world and you're aware of your own morality. If you haven't got all that, you are a fair game for life on battery farm. Yet we don't pretend that human babies, though pre-verbal, self-centered, guilt-free and amateurs at using tools, are incapable of feeling pain. And we'd like to look pretty automation like, if viewed with a coolly objective eye.

At this point, I would like to bring under consideration, the examples which have been mentioned earlier by my friends. Whether be it the nuclear deal or mobile, television issue or any other burning topic, the point is that it depends on your perception. If you perceive something to be good, you will acknowledge all its advantages but if you perceive the same thing to be bad, you will look at the darker side.

Everything depends on your perspective. You can say that the glass is half-full with water or half-empty or you can even complain because roses have thorns or you can rejoice because thorns have roses. It's your perception that matters.

You should prefer to be an optimist rather than a pessimist. You can transcend all negativity when you realize that the only power it has over you is your belief in it.

The British Council, a premier institute for the promotion of English as an effective tool for global communication, organizes an annual event called Debating Matters, India. It is a competition open to bona fide students of Junior Colleges of all the states in India. The country is divided in four regions (Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western regions)

Atomic Energy Junior College, Anushaktinagar, Mumbai falls in western region of the format. The contest involves a preliminary screening contest called the On-line Elimination Test (OET) which is taken on-line. The contest requires a junior college to field a team of six members. The on-line contest entails the students to answer five questions on a generic question, which checks their debating abilities and reasoning capabilities. The time allowed is 60 minutes. The

stOET was tackled by the students of AEJC on the 21 of August, 2010. It is reported that more than 400 junior colleges participated in the OET. Of these, twelve colleges were selected for the regional round. AEJC was placed third in the overall selection list. The other schools selected were a virtual who-is-who of premier schools of Mumbai.

thThe regional round for the twelve selected schools was held on the 27 September, 2010 at Xavier's Institute of Management and Research, Fort, Mumbai. The contest was scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM and finish at 7:30 PM.

In the first round, the team of Sanket Choudhary, XII C and Devashree Vyas, XII B pitted their skill against the team from Jamnabai Narsee School, where they spoke in favour of the motion for the topic 'A caste based census is central to attaining social justice in India'. A tough topic to defend, the AEJC team showed great character to win the round.

In the second round, the team of Karthik Subramnium, XIC and Apeksha Katarni XI C matched their wits against the team of Podar International School. The AEJC team spoke against the topic 'It's time for India to grow GM food crops'. The team impressed all by their research of topic and their debating skills and won the round with ease. In the third round the first team of Sanket Choudhary and Devashree Vyas took on the team of Mahinder United World School (An International School with students of foreign countries only). The topic was 'Industrialisation in India does not benefit the poor'. The AEJC team spoke in favour of the topic. After a tough fight, team AEJC won the contest and with it a straight entry into the final.

The final was against Symbiosis School. The topic for final round was, 'The importance of learning English is overstated' and team AEJC spoke for the topic. In spite of the disadvantageous side of the debate, team AEJC fought hard. By the narrowest of margins, Symbiosis School was declared the winner and team AEJC the Runner-up.

The programme ended with the prize distribution at the hands of the Director, British Council, who had flown down from England for the event.

As far as I can remember,

I can only see sadness in my life,

Smiles of dearest friends,

lost in my eyes.

When I try to look out for them in the morning light,

I can only see them ignoring me whole throughout my life.

Boring they called me, whenever I passed by.

Have you ever tried to understand the loneliness I had inside?

My own trusted friends were the ones to betray me,

then how could I trust any one else who came by my side?

I believe you now, I believe you all,

I am the boring one out of you all.

But have you ever tried to look inside my heart,

You wont find any hatred for you,

but only love all through.

I wish I was loved by, I wish you cared .

I think I am not the fortunate one to get your love and care.

But friends, I loved you all,

all through out my life.

Now, the best friend of mine, too, ignores me,

gone are the days she used to adore me.

I never imagined your going away from me,

Do you think, that's what I deserved for trusting with all my heart?

You don't know but I cry when you ignore me & still you don't care at all,

I thought you would return to me , but you didn't understand me at all.

Days have passed but still I am waiting for all of you,

With hope of love from all of you.

Now I am not a best friend of you any more,

I wish I could smile with you some more.

I am sorry that I was always sad and even made you sad.

I thought I could share with you all that I had.

Darkness in my life forces me to surrender,

I don't know till what point I can hold on to my faith,

But I still believe in you because my heart still has faith,

Faith in you all......

Man is not made to be idle. “In the sweat of thy face shall thou eat bread” was the curse given to man by God,

according to the Bible. It is more a blessing than a curse. We should not be like drones but should try to procure honey from

every flower like honey bees. There are so many things in this wonderful world and we are the only beings gifted with

intelligence to understand them. So, it should be our constant endeavour to use this gift for a better understanding of the

people of this world.

Our brain is idle when we do not have anything to think about. And this may lead to dangerous consequences.

When you do not think for yourself, you allow others to influence you. Other thoughts occupy you mind and any

mischievous element can easily exploit you for its own purpose. The devil need not be the devil about whom we may have

read a great deal though none has seen it in person. Any wicked idea or workshop where it forges these is the mind of a

person who refuses to think for himself. That is exactly the reason why much emphasis is laid on education. A truly

educated person should be able to discriminate between the right and the wrong and should be able to work for the good.

Education should train us to think, it should inculcate in us the right values of life. That is why it is always healthy to

encourage hobbies.

Disastrous are the results of idleness. A man with an idle mind suffers and makes others also suffer, like so many

dandies who are frequently seen at any so-called fashionable place, gambling, drinking and indulging in other excesses.

Work is worship and is the fruit of life; but it need a direction and purpose.

“In works of labour or of skillLet me be busy too;

For Satan finds some mischief stillFor idle hands to die”.

Rupal Sharma

AN IDLE MIND IS A DEVIL'S WORKSHOP

One cannot give what he does not possess.

To give love, you must possess love.

One cannot teach what he does not understand,

To teach love, you must comprehend love.

One cannot know what he does not study.

To study love, you must live in love.

One cannot appreciate what he does not recognize.

To recognize love, you must be receptive to love.

One cannot have doubt about what he wishes to trust,

To trust love, you must be convinced of love.

One cannot admit what he does not yield to.

To yield to love, you must be vulnerable to love.

One cannot live what he does not dedicate himself to.

To dedicate yourself to love, you must be forever growing in love.

The Universe has called it as Global Warming.

Ozone layer is getting thinner day-by-day,

Sunrays will burn our skin is what scientists say.

Trees are being cut like anything,

Chemical reaction will destroy everything,

Our world is developing new technologies,

Pollution is affecting the human bodies.

Carbon is increasing in the air,

Effect has started on skin, eyes and hair,

Destruction of natural resources is unfair,

Nature is our responsibility; we have to care.

What if ice all over the Earth becomes water?

What if in summer we have to wear a sweater?

In rainy season we have to pray for water drops,

Without water how will survive, our crops?

Present generation is becoming selfish,

Cosmetics will create a sea without fish.

Reading books is one of the charms of a cultured

life. The man who does not read book is imprisoned in his

immediate world. But the moment he takes up a book, he

enters a different world. If it is a good book, he is

immediately put in touch with one of the best talkers in

the world. The talker takes him to a different age or

unburdens to him some of his personal regrets.

Creative literature attracts all. It nourishes youth,

entertains the old, and provides solace in adversity.

Literature is a form of artistic creation, and as such, it is

both a criticism and idealization of life. To quote Hudson,

“an expression of life through the medium of language is

called literature.” It prepares us to face life cheerfully. It

widens our experiences of life by revealing those aspects,

which are commonly hidden from our view.

Great works in literature are noted for their imagination

and understanding of human nature. They affect our

innermost feelings and emotions. Through his great

tragedies, Shakespeare impresses on us the unity of the

human soul and its emotions, behind the diversity of our

ideas and customs. We are on in emotional life whether

we have white face like Hamlet or a black one like

Othello's. When he drew Hamlet's, he pictured the

uncertainties and indecisions which visit us, though in

different circumstances. His Macbeth mirrors our

dishonest ambitions. Through these great tragedies,

Shakespeare reminds us that although evil might succeed,

its triumph is short-lived. Great poems and novels also

give us an insight into life.

A book does not always mean a novel. Famous

autobiographies, biographies and books that involve

mystery are also worth reading. Autobiographies and

biographies help us to understand the difficulties and

sufferings that great men have had to face in their lives.

We are reminded of Gandhiji's autobiography, “The Story

of My Experiments with Truth”. On the other hand, books

Tell me just one emotion that makes this boring life bearable. No it's not love; faith and all that crappy things. It's HUMOUR! Small wisecracks; puns; hilarious situations all add up the required masala and help us going with this life. After five primary senses if you have got an extra humour sense, it's just as delightful as the strong smell of coffee after all the perfumes have numbed your smell reception. It not only enhances the personality of the individual but also helps him to socialize faster than his 'nerd-type' counterpart. A person who is witty can get away in parties; get-togethers; and might be the only person the crowd wants to talk with. Such person definitely has to be an extrovert in order to express his views and feelings. Do you even know that humour is the only emotion that won't ditch you and might be the one good reason for a successful relationship between any two persons? Well, that's very simple. Love is just abstract feeling and now-a-days has more analogy with material success than pure-love as we say it. Faith and hope are just feel good factors and diminishes with time and experience. But as long as you are sharp and witty you can catch up with your life and can live it with extra vigour. And as the saying goes ' life is a tragedy for those who think and a comedy for those who believe' … So buck up life I'm not meant to be wasted in being sulky and annoyed.

The most important part of delivering a joke is that the way you deliver the punch-line. It should be full of expression and the character you are playing should come alive in front of the audience. Consider this one:-

An employer asks for a three day leave…Boss: What is this?

Employer: Leave application sir, as I have to attend my mother's funeralBoss: So….. your mother is dead?

With proper voice modulation and perfect timing you can rock the people to the core. And what for sure will follow is uproar of laughter from the people. As you are having fun what about some more?

Man with his deep penance evokes the Almighty and as usual the Almighty grants him a wish.Man: I want a bridge to be built that connects earth and heaven.

Almighty: That is not possible my son. Think about other things…Man: Okay then, I want all men of this world to be intelligent enough to understand the needs, the wants, the

psychology of the woman and to interpret the complexities of the complex 'in itself' mind of the beautiful creation….Almighty: Would you like two lane bridge or four lane one?

or this one:A boat ferrying nine men and a single woman topples. A chopper comes to its rescue. The pilot the people floating

on the lake to get hold of the rope dangling below the chopper. It was after all the ten people were hanging on the rope when the pilot realized that the weight was too much so one person would have to let go. Being the only woman all the men agreed that she should let go. Agreeing to the demands and wishes of the men, woman said “After all it's the woman who makes all the sacrifices. First for her parents, then for her husband and then for sons and daughters… and she doesn't even have a life of her own…” saying so she was moved to tears. Men on the other side couldn't stop their emotion as well. They all were sentimental and started clapping for the woman.

Now in this case you don't have to explain the aftereffect. Leave it to the imagination of the people. It shall have more effect rather than divulging everything and diluting its effect.

For small conversations you don't need such long jokes. Just witty thoughts and ideas are enough to rejuvenate a conversation.

How about this:If 33% reservation for women in the parliament is implemented then gossiping would be the fundamental right of

every citizen of this country and the women of this country shall have equal rights on the issues of debit cards and credit cards of their husbands or fathers.

HUMOUR, THE BEST OF ALL SENSES!

Be great in little things. - St. Francis Xavier 20

or this one:Politicians are like nappies. Both must be constantly changed and for the same good reason.

or what about this?It was our money which made all the biggest scams in our country. When are we getting our dues?

The feeling of making someone happy and complacent is what gives the real satisfaction. Even if the laughter remains only for a couple of seconds, you made the person forget his world, world full of bank balance sheets, bills, rising prices, family conflicts, workload and every damn thing and made him feel more relaxed and at peace. So go on brighten up someone's day. And remember if you make a joke of any person, laugh at the joke not at the person. So cheer up and enjoy life's precious moments before it slips away.

JUST ANOTHER DAY AT COLLEGE

One day a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with a firm purpose of showing his son how poor people can be. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?" "It was great, Dad." "Did you see how poor people can be?" the father asked. "Oh Yeah" said the son. "So what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father. The son answered, "I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a lake that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our portico reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them." With this the boy's father was speechless. Then his son added, "Thanks dad for showing me how poor we are." It's all in the way we look at things!

The steeple clock struck midnight at the distance, drowning out the watchman's snoring. By his side was a newspaper with an unusual headline-

"Strings Of Mysterious Deaths Continue"

She sat reading in her room, on the second floor of the empty hostel. She sighed deeply. “My life is so monotonous,” she thought, “Wish I had gone with the other girls to the movies. College starts tomorrow and I haven't had any fun in the holiday.”

The ringing of her cell phone startled her out of her thoughts. She answered it. “Hello?” “Hello.”

“Who is this?”

“This is the person who is walking to your hostel to kill you. Beware! I am only a mile away!”

"Try something better!” she snapped.

She hung up, cursing the prankster, whoever he was, and flipped through the pages of her book to find where she'd left off. She spent the next few minutes reading about the boy locked in a haunted house, blissfully unaware of the horror that awaited her, when her phone rang and broke the silence. The same eerie voice greeted her, “I'm coming to get you! Are you afraid?”

"Shut up and leave me alone!" she shouted before hanging up. Utterly frustrated by now, she put down her book and went up to the window.

Knock-Knock.

She spun around. Did someone just knock on the door, or was it her mind playing tricks on her? Be brave, she told herself.

The phone rang again and this time, it made her jump three feet in the air. The same voice again. “I'm standing right outside your hostel and I can see in your window!” She parted the curtains and peered outside, but saw nobody.

A cold wind swept into her face, making her shiver. A believer in the paranormal, she was starting to get scared, though she would never admit it. The watchman's chair stood empty. She said into the phone, “WHO ARE YOU?" The only reply she got was, “I'm climbing up the stairs now." What she heard in the background were not footsteps, but soft thudding noises, the kind made by ghosts in movies.

That sent a chill down her spine. She hastily disconnected the call and instructed herself to stop panicking, though her mind was filled with scary thoughts. The phone interrupted her thoughts again. She picked it up with trembling hands. The now familiar voice said, “I'm standing right at your doorstep. Are you ready to die?”

Shaking all over, all she could think of right now was to hide someplace safe. Hastily, she entered her closet and locked it from inside.

“I'm entering your room. I'm inside now.”

That's strange, she thought. She hadn't heard the door open. Or had she?

“I'm standing outside your closet. Now I'm entering.”

She was scared of death and couldn't think of any way to escape. She closed her eyes, prepared for the worst.

“I'm right beside you in the closet...”

The next day, the newspapers flaunted yet another unusual headline-

"Hostel Girl Found Dead In Closet.

thIt was a normal evening on the 24 of December 1999 in the Tribhuvan international airport, Kathmandu. Indian airlines flight number IC 814 was to depart from the terminals of the above said airport and everything was normal, according to most of the common people except five noxious and a few of corrupt crew members. Nobody on board would have ever imagined that this could turn out to be a day which could change their lives or even end the same.

thIC 814 ready to take off at 1653 hrs on the 24 of December and proceedings were smooth for the Boeing A300. It would have been three quarters of an hour since the flight had taken off; there was a terrifying notice and violent introduction of five hijackers in the flight who were armed with guns. The pilot captain Devi Sharan was forced to open the cockpit doors and was forcefully made to fly west whereas the flight had to fly to its destination at Delhi, Indira Gandhi International Airport.

The Chief hijacker forced the pilot to take the flight to P.O.K (Pakistan Occupied Kashmir) but the pilot low on fuel in his aircraft refused to do so. In order to refuel the aircraft the pilot had to land at Amritsar airport. By this time the news of the hijack had been spread out and almost everyone had got knowledge of this. When the pilot landed his aircraft in Amritsar and requested for fuel from the A.T.C (Air Traffic Control) they did not respond to the plea and in turn expected guidance from the Delhi police force and this delay was aggravating the hijackers.

The aggression of the hijackers had reached the top when they ordered the pilot to take the aircraft off in the air and fly it towards POK. Captain Sharan having no other option had to take off the aircraft in the air with the destination of IC 814 unknown!! Next the hijackers ordered Sharan to take the flight to Lahore, Pakistan. With the radio transmissions when the captain spoke to Pakistan ATC, they refused the landing of the flight in Lahore and also they switched off the runway lights so that the captain could not land the aircraft. Now captain Sharan low on his fuel attempted a crash land onto the runway.

He saw a series of lights and anticipated it to be the runway and when he brought the aircraft dangerously close, he and his co-pilot realized that it was the road and not the runway. Seeing this move of the captain ATC allowed him to land onto the runway. The aircraft was refueled but Pakistan ATC denied to off board few women and children who were on the aircraft. After being refueled the air craft was again taken off in the air heading towards a new destination, unknown!!

No one knew what was going on, in the minds of the hijackers. Meanwhile when this ordeal was taking place, the friends and relatives of the hostages organized an official press conference with the Foreign Affairs Minister and the Prime Minister of India and some intelligence agencies had figured out that the hijackers belonged to Pakistan and were a part of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen.

Getting back to the aircraft, it was taken to Kandahar, Afghanistan by the hijackers and 27 out of the total 176 passengers were freed except one Rupin Katyal, who was stabbed to death.

A team of interlocutors was organized to negotiate with the hijackers. The hijackers demanded the release of Maulana Masood Azhar and two other terrorist who were kept in jail in different parts of India.

It was later found out by the Indian Special Forces that the chief of the hijackers Ibrahim Azhar was the younger brother of Maulana Azhar.

The negotiators and the hijackers had 48 hour long discussion and the latter weren't in a mood to budge on their demands. Finally, the Indian negotiators had to agree to the demands of the evils and release the three terrorists from the prison, which in turn meant putting the lives of 100,000s of others on the line. The prisoners were released and the hijacked

stairplane was brought back to India on the 1 of January 2000 i.e. 173 hours after the hijack.

Its ten years past, since that incident happened and it still remains as an aggression and streak in the minds of true Indians who haven't forgotten the shame India faced during that incident and the very aggression has helped in the development and preparation on any confrontation of our country to such high level since that time. There's still a long way to go and I'm sure that India will be able to balance all the negatives it has faced in the past decades as it has been balancing

My New Best Friend

Today I met a great new friendwho knew me right away

It was funny how she understoodall I had to say.

She listened to my problemsShe listened to my dreams

We talked about love and life. She’d been there, too, it seems.

I never once felt judged by herShe knew just how I felt

She seemed to just accept me.And all the problems I’d felt.

She didn’t interrupt meOr need to have her say

She just listened very patientlyAnd didn’t go away.

I wanted her to understandHow much this meant to me

But as I went to hug herSomething startled me.

I put my arms in front of meAnd went to pull her nearer

And realized that my new best friendwas nothing but my mirror.

th th The first thing that strikes our minds when we hear of the 26 of January or the 15 of August is, a day of holiday or

a day of rest and leisure. The value of these days is disappearing like vanishing forests in India. We have become so selfish

that we hardly spend a minute to think about the struggle and sacrifices of our freedom fighters who fought for our

country's independence. We do not realize the importance of these National Festivals.

We are fond of celebrating other days. We can often see people greeting each other, “Happy Friendship Day”,

“Happy Valentines' day”, this day, that day, etc., but we seldom see people greeting each other saying “Happy

Independence Day” or “Happy Republic Day” it's hard, really hard. These days are our National Festivals but we never

even celebrate these days with a festive spirit. These important national festivals are just left behind as routine days, a

formality to be completed by schools, colleges and government offices. The common mentality is that we have to go to

schools or colleges, see the national flag there, spend some time and take our share of sweets and come back home and the

routine formality of celebrating Independence Day is over. Even for this, hardly 20 % of population of the students is

present.

On the other hand we celebrate other days like “Friendship Day”, “Chocolate Day”, “Valentine's Day”, “Father's

Day”, “Mother's Day”, etc., with a lot of interest. Here I would like to throw some light sincerely on the increasing

popularity of such days. We celebrate “Friendship Day” with a lot of interest. Everybody ties a colourful band on another's

wrist and writes names on the other's hand. It seems to be very funny. Do we really need to depend on bands and cards to

convey our feelings to our friends? Have we become so weak that we need a specific day to tell somebody “I am your

friend? And the proof of this is that I have tied a band on your wrist and given you a card”. The funniest part of this day is

that people often do not know who is tying a band and to whom!

Such days have been brought into existence by some cards and gifts companies with a view to earn money and we

have blindly fallen into their traps. Tomorrow, they will introduce “Happy Sunday”, “Happy Monday”, “Happy Tuesday”,

etc., and we would oblige them by observing such days also. Where have our senses gone? What a shame! We are allowed

western cultures to eclipse over Independence Day and Republic Day of our national importance.

My intention is not to interfere in individual's freedom or to tell anybody to kill his/her interest in anything. My

motive is just to emphasize that we ought to attach due importance to our national festivals and sovereignty which have

been achieved due to the efforts and sacrifices made by our forefathers and freedom fighters for our country.

Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam and citizens of India aspire to see their country as a developed one by 2020.Millions of such

aspirations will become a reality only when the generation next promises to imbibe the feeling of patriotism in itself. For

this we should first learn to respect our brave soldiers, freedom fighters who sacrificed their present for our better future.

Thus I conclude hoping for a change.

Jai Hind!!!

Learning is an intricate process which is defined as change in behavior of the learner (a newly acquired

knowledge, a more skillful action or a new mind-set). Learning can be enhanced with various types of teaching aids as they

not only excite and inspire but also capture the attention of the students during the instructional process.

Teachers prepare their lessons with suitable teaching aids to make their presentation attractive and most effective.

Charts, models, toys, paper cuttings are some examples of teaching aids. Schools are equipped with different types of

projectors which can magnify the presentation for mass viewing. What about worksheets, crosswords and interesting

puzzles that will keep the students glued to their studies - can they be called as teaching aids?

What is a good teaching aid - the one that helps to reduce the efforts of teaching or the one that helps the learning

process easier? For example, a chart showing a diagram relieves the teacher from the difficult task of drawing it every time

that topic is taught in the class; but deprives the students of the chance to watch and learn how to draw such a diagram.

Though it would be time consuming, when the teacher makes the drawing on the board, the students observe and learn the

drawing skill. Therefore such teaching aids, like charts, merely reduce the difficulties of teachers, and hardly help the

learners.

Some teaching aids like mock models, working models etc are huge and heavy hence difficult to be carried to the

class rooms. On the other hand, some models are very tiny that one cannot show them to the whole class. In such cases, the

teacher has to call the students in smaller groups to a laboratory or workshop for its demonstration.

In a student centered learning system, it is considered that knowledge is constructed by students and that the

teacher is a facilitator of learning rather than a presenter of information. In this scenario, a teaching aid used by a teacher

must be a cent per cent aid for the learner. That is why I would prefer to use the term 'learning aid' to 'teaching aid'. A

teaching aid is not in the possession of the student, and hence cannot be available when he/she wants to learn the subject.

Therefore, if the teaching aids are meant for making the learning process easier, then every student must have a teaching

aid with them.

How can we provide teaching aids individually for all students? One thing that can be done is to keep such models,

charts etc displayed in such places where the students can freely observe them. I had tried this by preparing a display table

of different types of motors dismantled and displayed in the Electrical Lab. They are heavy objects and cannot be carried to

the class room. Whenever the students visit the lab they can see them. But I experienced that few students really showed

curiosity to see them, others saw them only when I directed them to watch it. I learned that it is when the students want to

watch it one should display the model; and not when the busy school schedule permits.

How can I take these models wherever I want? I got the answer from the 'digital world', where you can make any

number of copies. Take photographs of those objects and prepare interactive animation software that simulates the

experience in the lab. I have done some work in this direction and have produced some software which enables the students

TEACHING AID Vs. LEARNING AID

to learn the working principle of motors, to revise the “Ohm's Law” experiment, or to calibrate a voltmeter, ammeter or

energy meter all sitting on their home computer. Not only revising their practical, they can also perform the practical with

all alternatives like using meters of a different type, least count or zero error which they cannot experience in a lab due to

practical difficulties.

A teacher teaching a lesson and a student learning it are not necessarily two simultaneous activities. While

attending a lecture the students will be busy listening to it, doubts may develop in their mind which will hamper further

understanding of the lecture. The completion of learning takes place only when the students clear the doubts developed in

their mind one by one with their own thought process. This may take place any time later but not necessarily at the same

time of instruction. It is during this time the learning aids play their vital role.

For example, in Physics, a teacher teaches the principle of Vernier calipers demonstrates its use and finally makes

the students perform the practical. Thereafter the instrument is not available for the students for further practice. This

deficit can be compensated by a piece of animation software. Students can even experience a backward reading vernier

with such software, which otherwise remains a mere mention in the theory book.

Worksheets, crosswords and interesting puzzles are also good learning aids. In software-form they can be made

self assessing to create interest in the students to answer more and more to bring their scores high. Different incentives can

be provided at various levels to motivate them. (One can see how eager our children are to water and fertilize their plants in

their Farmville).

A learning aid is a teaching aid prepared by the teacher and given to the students that the students use voluntarily.

In this era of the fifth generation computers, internet and the digital cameras, I find this method very feasible and effective.

I will list a few, not all, advantages of this software technique below.

1. Difficulty of large models to be carried is eliminated

2. Tiny models can be magnified and displayed

3. Electrical Circuits can be practiced without fear or hazards

4. Experiments can be practiced with all variant form of equipment, instrument etc

5. 'Teaching aids' for every student (I mean learning aids)

6. Multiple copies can be produced without added cost

STATUS OF WOMEN IN INDIA

Since Independence there has been much change for the betterment of women in India. There is considerable increase in

the number of career and professional women. There are women judges, lawyers, executives, entrepreneurs, engineers,

doctors, bank managers, pilots and women, players and sports persons. They are there in every walk of life competing with

men quite successfully. They are equal before law and there is no discrimination on the basis of sex. By virtue of various

Acts and status, their rights, privileges and prerogative have been secured and protected.

There have been women political leaders, governors, chief ministers, cabinet ministers, speakers of the legislatures and

judges of the apex court. Mrs. Indira Gandhi has been a popular Prime Minister of India and remained on this highest

executive post 1966-77 and again between 1980-84.

Women are still very much disturbed and worried about their present status and want fundamental changes in their social,

family and economical status. They want to contribute towards national progress, family welfare and social prosperity on

equal footing. They feel that they are not able to play their desired role to the maximum limit in the society only because

there has not been any fundamental changes in the attitude of men towards them. Their emancipation and empowerment

are not real and concrete but only theoretical and imaginary.

Unless women themselves are united and wage a unified struggle against gender bias, male domination and

discrimination, nothing appreciable and lasting can be achieved. Humanity can achieve its crowning glory and the highest

achievement only when women are really emancipated and empowered. Without their active and willing cooperation

nothing great and lasting can be achieved.Rinny Sunny
