A fascinating chapter in history reopens.. .

Our imaginations run with thoughts of music filled with infectious rhythms and passion. Vistas filled with breathtaking terrains to architecture designed by famed architects. There is no limit to the depth of the culture of Cuba, this is why writers such as Ernest Hemingway were once drawn here.

There is no better way to witness the colorful mosaic of Cuba than aboard the 210-guest MS Saint Laurent. Her size allows her to reach small inlets and ports that are untouched by larger vessels, allowing her guests to witness a rich culture built by generations of European, African and revolutionary influences.

World known rhythms such as Mambo and Cha-cha-cha originated in Cuba; as well

as the first known Salsa called “Echale Salsita” (Spice it up a little) recorded back in the 1930s.

Following breakfast, guests aboard will be treated to a fascinating lecture on the colorful history, people and the culture that shaped Havana today. We will then disembark and begin our cultural exploration of this beautiful city by foot through the atmospheric squares of ‘Havana Viejo’, calling on artists in their studios as we pass. Visit Hotel Ambos Mundos, where Ernest Hemingway kept a room for years. The hotel served as a refuge for writing such works as “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and a base for frequenting his favorite bars. After dinner, we encourage guests to enjoy an evening performance at the historic Tropicana Cabaret or alternatively stroll to nearby Café Taberna, where one can enjoy Cuban music inspired by the famed Buena Vista Social Club.

“The most beautiful land that eyes have ever seen.” ~ Christopher Columbus

This morning we head west into the province of Pinar Del Rio to the famed Viñales Valley. A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, Viñales boasts Cuba’s most strikingly beautiful landscapes and is where the island’s best tobacco is grown. Survey an orchid garden with staff from the University of Pinar del Rio. Visit a family-run tobacco farm and learn why their crops are among the world’s best. Also, interact with workers at a tobacco-sorting facility. The valley is punctuated by huge limestone caves that form inside one of the many spectacular mogotes – limestone karst outcroppings. A small boat takes us on a river running inside the cave. Sample the homegrown vegetables grown at an organic farm while meeting the family who is responsible for the land. Cap-off our day by meeting locals in the small community of Viñales before returning to Havana.

Explore Maria La Gorda, on the Bahía de Corrientes, beginning in La Bajada. Meet with a local naturalist at Guanahacabibes National Park, the largest of Cuba’s six nature reserves. In addition to butterflies and bird life such as the endemic bee hummingbird and yellow-headed warbler, Guanahacabibes is home to a large profusion of orchids and epiphytes with a total of 16 species, some indigenous and some recently discovered. At a Meteorological Center, learn about forecasting weather patterns, storms and hurricanes that have left their mark in Cuba, along with how historic storms have impacted ordinary Cubans. Participate in an expert discussion at the “Honey House” on beekeeping and honey production.

Referred to as “the Pearl of the South,” Cienfuegos has a distinctly French spirit

with a Caribbean flair.

Enjoy a walking tour of Cienfuegos’ city center this morning. Founded in 1819 by the Spanish, but initially settled by the French – it became a trading place for sugar cane, tobacco and coffee. The city first developed in the neoclassical style, later becoming more eclectic but retaining a harmonious overall landscape. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, we’ll meet with a local specialist to discuss the significance of buildings such as Government Palace (City Hall), San Lorenzo School, the Bishopric, Ferrer Palace and the former lyceum. Discover the transformative power of art in the lives of ordinary Cubans while visiting a graphic arts workshop. After a performance by the Cienfuegos Choir — we’re invited to join the choir for songs in the spirit of musical exchange.

Che GuevaraErnesto “Che” Guevara’s face and fascinating legacy is as synonymous with Cuban culture as the country’s world famous cigars. A confidant of Fidel Castro and one of his military advisors, Che was a key figure in the Cuban Revolution with his decisive victory at Santa Clara. Post revolution, Guevara held a variety of internal posts in the new government but left Cuba to aid causes in other countries. Despite his departure, the many murals, tributes and statues attest to his continued importance in Cuba’s history and lore.

Called “the museum city of Cuba”, Trinidad offers a window

into another era.

Today, a city historian leads a walking tour of Trinidad, an architectural jewel proclaimed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Red tiled roofs atop pastel stucco structures line the cobbled streets. This port city reflects its 16th century past and founding by Conquistadors. Eighteenth century smugglers and pirates made frequent calls here or even used this port as their base of operations in the Caribbean. The wealth and importance of Trinidad continued into the 19th century, when sugar barons reigned. Mingle with local residents and call on artists in their studios as we wind our way through the city. Guests will stop at the Museum Romantico and the Architecture Museum. At Casa Del Alfarero Santander, an artisan workshop, meet local artists and learn about traditional pottery techniques. This pottery studio has been run by the same family for decades.

Home of legendary rum and birthplace of the revolution, Santiago de Cuba has soul. Proximity

to Jamaica and other tropical isles has infused the city with a distinctly Caribbean spirit.

The second largest city of Cuba, established in 1515 by Conquistador Diego Velazquez de Cuéllar, the city remains today as an important seaport to the island. Well known for it’s traditional dances unique to this region of the island we’ll witness locals explaining their dance as well learn about the Afro-Cuban religions such as Santeria widely practiced in the area. Following, we’ll visit the local citadel of San Pedro de la Roca a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most complete and best-preserved examples of Spanish American military architecture based on the Italian and Renaissance design principles.

In the heart of the Cuchillas del Toa Biosphere Reserve, Humboldt National Park

is widely recognized as the best-preserved mountainous ecosystem in the Caribbean,

full of diverse flora and fauna.

Today we visit the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park. A complex geology and topography of the area has given rise to the diversity of ecosystems and species unmatched in the Caribbean which has created one of the most biologically diverse tropical island sites on earth. Named after German naturalist-explorer Alexander von Humboldt who first came here in 1801, endangered bird species protected here include the Cuban Amazon Parrots, Hook-billed Kites and Ivory-billed Woodpeckers.

A traveler’s favorite, Gibara la Blanca, the white town is a small, charming and quiet cocoon by the sea, wrapped by hills

and woven with culture.

After a leisurely morning of cruising and lunch onboard, you’ll step ashore in the colorful port of Gibara where Christopher Columbus landed on October 27, 1492. Our comfortable coaches will be waiting to take you about 20 miles into the interior to explore the sites and culture of Holguín, a city where the rhythms of life have changed little over the years. Accompanied by our experienced Cuban guides, you’ll spend time with artisans and musicians, hearing their stories and learning about their daily life and passions. You’ll return to ship with time to refresh before this evening’s farewell dinner. This evening, our ship completes its 360° circumnavigation of the island and begins its return journey across the Florida Straits. An evening briefing will include important disembarkation information and a recap of our voyage.
