Early conditions set in from the north with a mid pond start and a work up to the shore. With shifts and slow spots it kept everyone on their edge. The wind was trying to edge around to the NE but just held onto that northerly aspect. Early pacesetters included Ron, Al, Brian and Selwyn but as it all settled in Brian forged ahead with a string of firsts to lead by lunch closely followed by Selwyn. The rest were having fun and taking their turn to climb up the ladder in the variable conditions. Every now and then Glenn was putting the skid up everyone with a burst of speed from his beautiful red gunboat. By the afternoon, the wind had sprung to the NE with an easterly flavour and it was back on again. Plenty of more opportunities for passing as the lightish conditions (1-10 km/h) waxed and waned. This set the scene for a grand jostle for the top places, the key was picking the side to be favoured... this was some luck and a lot of judgement. Sailing at it’s best!

A lovely blue balmy winter’s day greeted the sailors of these graceful machines. Barry, Brian, Ralph,

Ron, Glenn, John, Gary, Al and Selwyn all shook hands chased the ducks off the course and started

the games.

Early conditions set in from the north with a mid pond

start and a work up to the shore. With shifts and slow

spots it kept everyone on their edge. The wind was

trying to edge around to the NE but just held onto that

northerly aspect. Early pacesetters included Ron, Al,

Brian and Selwyn but as it all settled in Brian forged

ahead with a string of firsts to lead by lunch closely

followed by Selwyn. The rest were having fun and

taking their turn to climb up the ladder in the variable

conditions. Every now and then Glenn was putting the

skid up everyone with a burst of speed from his

beautiful red gunboat.

Brian held onto a slender lead until the last 4 races and Selwyn finished strongly with a burst of first

places to finish, just pipping Brian by a few points. Third was also a battle between Gary and Ralph

and it went right to the wire with a tie at the end. Ralph won with a count back. A number of new

sailors to this fleet are rapidly learning the ropes. Watch out in the future for John, Barry and Ron. All

keen and angling to get their skills up.

All “minor rules discussions” were handled on the water and everyone did a great job contributing to

a lovely calm and peaceful day.

Catering at the pond is famous (true) and this tradition was carried forward with our new President

Dennis Yarrow, who along with his helpers (Al, Ralph and Ron) kept the tea and food up to the

standard expected. Dennis also did a grand job as PRO. Thanks also goes to Brian and Al for setting

up the race scoring and results system and all the others who helped out to make the day work.

Then of course, just to keep all the blokes calm, a great big thanks to Cathy and Helen for spending

the day with us and keeping all the results and scores up to date. We really appreciated it.
