DESCRIPTION

Our skin plays a vital role in our health and well-being. As our body’s largest organ, the skin offers protection, enables sensation, provides heat regulation, and absorbs essential minerals that are required for a healthy body. Not to mention that the healing of cuts and wounds depend on how healthy the skin is. It has served us well through the years, and if we want to retain all the benefits that it offers then we must give it the skin care that it truly deserves.

Normally, we wouldn’t give that much importance to our skin, since, well, it’s just there. But in reality, it has served us well throughout the years. Maybe it’s about time we give it the skin care it deserves.

We have been taught that the skin is the body’s largest organ and it consists of different layers. In case you’ve missed it or the teacher might have forgotten to tell you, the skin as well as its layers is actually the main components of the integumentary system.

In school, we have been taught about muscular, skeletal, circulatory, digestive, nervous, and all the other systems inside our bodies. The external system or the integumentary system that covers all of these internal bodily systems has been disregarded in the school textbooks.

Why is Skin Care Very Important?

Skin care is very important because it helps maintain a healthy skin. In turn, having a healthy skin lets you maintain these vital features:

Protection

The skin serves as the body’s protection from the external environment, especially from the viruses and bacteria that may be harmful to the human body. Just imagine living without skin and that your internal organs are exposed to the external environment. You’d be more susceptible to diseases, right?

Also, the skin has its own repair mechanism that allows it to repair damaged areas such as wounds and cuts.

Sensation

The skin also provides us with the sense of feeling through sensation. This important sense won’t be realized without our skin. The nerve endings contained in the skin layer allows us to react in the advent of

heat and cold and other external vibrations, pressures, and even in injuries.

Heat Regulation

Our skin also serves as a regulator of body heat. In warm weather, the skin perspires to cool the body off. The sweat serves as ventilation when the temperature is too warm. When it’s too cold, we get those goose bumps alerting our body that the temperature outside it is cold and that heat should be locked inside.

Control of Evaporation

Since the skin is the outer covering of the body, it possesses a semi-dry outer layer and very tiny pores to help control the evaporation of fluids. Just imagine if the skin has large pores where bodily fluids can easily evaporate through, well, you’d be dehydrated in such a short period of time, wouldn’t you?

Storage

In case you didn’t know, the skin acts as a storage facility for lipids and water. This is when water retention happens and the stored water acts as an emergency hydration system when the body needs a boost.

Absorption

The skin absorbs small amounts of traces of elements in its surroundings. This is the reason why elements like nitrogen and carbon dioxide can diffuse into the dermal portion. Also, skin absorption makes anti aging cream and various skin products work. Without absorption, these skin care products won’t be of any use.

Water Resistance

Aside from protecting the internal parts of the human body, the skin’s water resistant outer layer prevents essential nutrients from being washed off when the body is exposed to water.
