Statement I've spent many years assembling this collection, and it's still a work in progress. What I've learned is that a collection, like any work of art, is alive, and grows and changes according to the attention you give it. If I had the time, I'd cull some sections of the collection, and build others up, especially the strong simple faces I like best - the antiques, the gothics, the early Page fonts, and especially those of Vanderburgh & Wells. I'd gradually move the collection towards the goal I once had in mind: a thousand fonts that represent the designs I most love. But I no longer have the time. Other matters call, and I'd like to find a good home for the collection with someone who'll appreciate it and care for it, and carry it forward. In the material which follows, I've tried to be as accurate and complete as possible. I've included two inventories: a simplified list of fonts in alphabetical order, and the main inventory, which lists the fonts numerically by location in cabinet and case, and includes notes on condition and content. To cross-reference between the two, use the item numbers in the far left column of each. The collection as it stands now is about one-third historic and fancy fonts, one-third modern 20th century fonts, and one-third gothics. It fills eleven cabinets, including three large Hamilton wood type cabinets, seven regular Hamilton cabinets, and one roll-top cabinet. Also included are a two smaller collections, one of borders, catchwords & ornaments and one of sorts, as well as several wood type catalogs and books and a 36-inch wood type composing stick from the old print shop at St. Meinrad's Abbey Press. Two final notes: Throughout the inventories, 'RRK' refers to 'Rob Roy Kelly', that is, to Kelly's encyclopedic American Wood Type, 1828-1900, followed by the page on which the font in question is found. And from the sorts collection, item 419: a 15 line Vanderburgh &Wells Pica Antique - one of my favorite faces. These sorts were found in a dusty cabinet composed entirely of V&W fonts, in pristine condition. Only a half dozen cases were left in the cabinet. Who knows where the others are now - including the rest of this beautiful font…

"In closing, I'd like to recount an interesting incident which adds another dimension to the allure of wood type… a mother and child incident [at an antiques mall not long ago]. The boy, about 11 years old, was unhappy with the mall experience; but his eyes lit up on spotting [our] array of type cases holding type, cuts and other seductive what nots. After inspecting things for a while, he started on a second tour despite his mother's tuggings. The mother persisted, the boy resisted. My wife, who had been observing this with quiet amusement (having raised three sons) asked him why he found the type of such interest. He caressed the piece he had in hand - thought a bit and said, "It's real."
