A Collective Win!I sincerely thank all of you for making LANCO Daya very memorable one. It was a success only because of the collective efforts you chipped in,coupled with your exemplary commitment.Success can never shy away from us if this spirit of togetherness continues to remain.

We have been constantly trying to improve our in-house magazine both in terms of look and contents. As I have underscored many a time, only a collective effort can make it happen. We seek your valuable suggestions as well as inputs to makethe magazine serve as a vital 'link' both within and without.

As our Chairman has rightly pointed out, the first quarter has shown that everything is movingahead as planned. This should indeed propel us to take more challenging initiatives and work with greater zeal and commitment.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

A feel-good factorto begin with

Dear Lanconians,

The first quarter of 2005 - A Year of Happenings - hasgracefully ushered in a feel-good factor across LANCOGroup, brought about mainly by the successfulsynchronisation of ABAN’s 120 MW Gas-based CombinedCycle Power Project in Tamil Nadu and the fast-paceddevelopments in LANCO Amarkantak Power, paving theway for its early financial closure.

That ABAN has successfully synchronised its Gas Turbinewith the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Grid is a matter ofgreat pride for all Lanconians. I congratulate all those whoworked hard for its completion as per schedule.

Equally important are the milestones achieved byAmarkantak, including the financial sanction by the PowerFinance Corporation Limited, other financial institutionsand major banks. Amarkantak is now being developed as a600 MW project in the first phase, of which the 300 MWPathadi Project is set to achieve financial closure in May2005. Once that happens, Amarkantak will become thefirst Coal-based Independent Power Project in the countryto have achieved financial closure under the newElectricity Act 2003.

Incidentally LANCO Annual Get-together organised earlythis year comes out with a timely message. The event was

a grand success because every Lanconian worked for itwith exemplary dedication and family spirit. This hasindeed reaffirmed my faith that together we can makethings happen, taking LANCO Group to greater heights.

We are placed at a time when the Indian economy is doingwell. Our GDP growth for the financial year 2005-06 isestimated to be at 6.9 per cent, the highest compared toother developed and developing countries. The industryand service sectors are expected to grow by 8.4 per centand 8.9 per cent respectively. The growth in the forexreserves, from a mere USD I billion in 1991 to the currentlevel of USD 130 billion, is indeed encouraging. India hasemerged as one of the most preferred destinations forForeign Direct Investments, ranking third after China andthe United States. In fact, India is expected to overtake theUnited States in a short time.

All this indeed augurs well for LANCO, which is makingstrides in the core sectors of the economy - PowerGeneration, Engineering & Construction, Manufacturingand Information Technology. It is for us to seize themomentum and make things happen, especially whenLANCO is marked out to be a key business player in Indiaand even beyond the borders.

CHALLENGE

Each day as anew

CHALLENGE

Who inspired you in your journey of success right from childhood?

What has made you to be part of LANCO Group?

How did you conceive LANCO Kondapalli Power?

Could you recall any particular event in the process of executingLANCO Kondapalli Power Project that you cherish the most?

What has made you to go for promoting the Kondapalli Toys? Whatare your plans for its future?

I see a lot of mementoes in your office. What do they mean to you?

I hear you are very fond of books. What kind of books you enjoyreading?

While my maternal grandfather KatragaddaMadhusudhan Rao, who was a freedom fighter, industrialist, educationist and philanthropist, taught meto be humane and treat everyone equal, it was my fatherYarlagadda Sreeramulu, who influenced me in opting for acareer in power sector. He worked with the AndhraPradesh State Electricity Board (APSEB) and wasinstrumental in developing various power projects inAndhra Pradesh and other parts of the country.

It was Founder Chairman L Rajagopal who influenced meto become part of LANCO. The young and dynamicleadership of LANCO in general and his vision andsincerity in particular greatly appealed to me. And myphilosophy of creating wealth, not just money, matchedwith that of LANCO. All this has led me to be part ofLANCO.

LANCO was looking for opportunities in powergeneration. Around that time the APSEB invited privateparticipation in tariff-based short gestation power projectsin the state. We participated in the bid and were awardedthe project. In spite of many hurdles, we managed to getall the necessary approvals, constructed the plant andcommissioned it successfully.

Transporting of heavy equipment proved to be a bighurdle. Once while transporting a heavy machine, a statuein the middle of the road blocked our way. The policeofficial concerned initially refused to shift the statue, as itwould have political overtones. But later when he was

told that it was the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, he readilygave the go-ahead for its removal. It was just asubconscious reaction, for he knew Mahatma Gandhi wasthe only national leader not owned by any particular casteor region. This incident has made me realise how badly weneed to be a homogeneous society to become a greatnation.

Society being one of the stakeholders of business, it is ourresponsibility to take care of the community around us.The traditional art of making Kondapalli Toys was goingthrough a bad phase, with only a few artisans showing anyinterest in its survival. Even those few were living inmiserable conditions due to declining market demands.Through persuasion and training, they have now beenbrought around to using natural colours and making toysto meet modern tastes.

As part of our social responsibility I take time out to lectureto students in colleges and schools on personalitydevelopment. I talk to them about life, mostly based onmy own life experiences. The mementoes speak of theirappreciation.

Books likeand have touched me by the

vivid portrayal of the lives and sufferings of immigrants tovarious parts of the world. I read such books for inspirationfrom the commonalities that exist between the strugglesof early immigrants and the difficulties in setting up aGreenfield industry.

One evening in 1990, my wife took me to a family in our

neighbourhood on a courtesy call. It was also to express

condolences over the death of one of their close relations.

I was not willing to visit, for I had not known them. Yet we

were warmly welcomed in.

Leaving me with the man of the house, who was a retired

scientist, my wife went in to condole the grieving woman.

There were journals on science spread on the small table in

front. I flipped thorough one of them.

In a bid to break the silent atmosphere, I tried to get the

man into a conversation. “How do you spend your time?” I

ventured to ask. Quick came the retort: “I do not spend my

time but I use it!” I felt so humbled that I resolved then and

there to think many times before speaking. It was also an

enlightening experience. Thereafter I have never tried to

ask anyone “How do you spend your time?” Let us

emulate him by using time rightly.

Ugadi (Telugu New Year) heralds the beginning of Chaithra Masa (First Month

of Telugu Calendar) and also marks the beginning of new life with vibrant and

verdant fields and meadows, full of colourful blossoms signifying growth,

prosperity and well-being. It is believed that Lord Brahma started creation on

this day - Chaithra Shuddha Prathipade or Ugadi.

The celebration of Ugadi is marked by religious zeal and social merriment.

People eat Ugadi pachchadi (a mixture of new jaggery, raw mango pieces,

tamarind and neem flowers) to signify that life is a mixture of good and bad,

joy and sorrow, success and disappointment, and all of them have to be treated

alike. People also speculate what the New Year has in store for them. They

therefore listen to Panchanga (Vedic Calendar forecast) on Ugadi. Experts

open the new Panchanga on this day and explain the forecast of rain, crop,

storms, crop prices and other relevant things. Predictions of the whole year

help in preparing people to face any situation in life.

Kavi Sammelanam (poetry recitation) is a typical Telugu Ugadi feature. Poets

of many hues - political, comic, satirical reformist, literary and melancholic -

make an appearance on the Ugadi stage. Ugadi is thus a festival of many

shades, celebrated with pomp and fervour as “Gudipadava” in Maharashtra.
