A Message from the President Betty Franzatti (208) 712-3059

I'm not ready for 2017 to be over.... I need a couple more weeks! We are off to another New Year and the chance to finish some of those UFOs again. This might actually be the year we do it, right? We have some great programs and activities coming up and, of course, they could involve a new quilt or project. We need to make room for them. Many of our members have been working behind the scenes for the benefit of our guild and I want to send a big THANK YOU to them. Patty Nutting, Mary Steel and Diana Swindle represented us at a table during a recent craft fair and netted the guild $285.50 after expenses. Diana has also been working on selling our cookbooks on eBay. Kay Van Cleve and Carol Niehoff have been out and about selling raffle tickets for our 2019 Raffle Quilt. Just think......if every member bought or sold just 10 tickets each, the guild would net over $1,600. Wow!!! Sharon Howe has a great program planned for the January General Meeting and everyone who attends will have the opportunity to learn some new techniques and skills. Pam Moore has been busy organizing some surprises for this year's Activity Day activities (2nd Saturday in February, April, June, August, October, and December. Income since our last General Meeting on November 27th is $3,770.75 of which $1,800 is retreat deposits. Expenses for the same period were $384.00. The Christmas Bazaar had income of $295.50; it was a great success.

Pat Speth, the Nickel Quilt Queen, will be our guest speaker and instructor in May. Pat loves scrappy and five inch

squares; hence the title Nickel Quilts. Not only does she use Charm packs for her designs, but cuts five-inch squares

from her stash. Participants are encouraged to scrap it up.

I’ll have further information on Pat's class in the March newsletter. Meanwhile, you can look her up on you tube, or

google her name, check out a book from Bear Paw Quilting and Bernina, or talk to a friend who has taken her class.

Many of our guild members have participated in the Nickel Quilt Classes.

I wish you all a year full of good health, filled with friendships old and new, inspirational projects, (finished of

course) and most of all kindness.

Ala-Carte is on the schedule for the upcoming January meeting. There are 8 instructors signed up to teach a

technique, or show and tell a product after our business meeting. I am looking forward to learning new things, or

perhaps having my memory refreshed on an older technique.

Meg Hawkey from Crabapple Hill is coming

to North Idaho Quilters on March 26th.

Many of you have been anxiously awaiting

her class and the feedback has been

enthusiastic and wonderful to hear.

I am still hoping to have a supply list for the

class by the January 22nd meeting. Stay

tuned for any further announcements. I have

21 signed up with room for four more. I

know that each of you will have an amazing

time and return home with a treasure

designed by a world renowned instructor,

author and pattern designer.

Activity Day Pam Moore (208) 772-1130

ACTIVITY DAY BLOCK *Clarice Drube

Four by Four Big Square Materials: White (solid or small prints) and brights

Makes a 12 1/2" block. Please make 2 blocks: 1 for door prize drawing, and one for Community Service.

Blocks do not have to be identical.

Our next Activity Day is February 10th at the American Legion Hall , 1138 E. Poleline Avenue, Post Falls. Please bring a luncheon dish to share. We gather at 9:30 am and have the room until 3pm. There are many things to do at Activity Day: Vilene will have a Community Service quilt to tie. You can bring your hand work or bring your sewing machine and sew a project. Bring the supplies on the supply list for the Chenille Potholders and join in the fun! There will be a few extra supplies for making the potholders.

From white fabric, cut 2 - 6 1/2" squares for the two "A" blocks. From bright fabrics, cut 8 - 3 1/2" squares to form the two "B" blocks. Stitch together four of the bright fabric squares to make a 6 1/2" four-patch block; make 2. Sew the four small blocks together to make a 12 1/2" block matching the diagram.

Four by Four Big Square Block

SUPPLIES NEEDED for each potholder: - New, unwashed cotton flannel: Cut five 9 inch squares (can be anywhere between 7 and 10 inches – whatever is comfortable for you) Only the top and bottom squares will be visible. Find good contrasting colors for the middle 3 layers – patterns will not show after they are “chenilled”.

- Thin batting, ironing board fabric or Insul-Bright – 1 square same size as above squares

- 1 package of extra wide, double fold bias tape – color to coordinate with above selected fabric. Can make binding from bias strips of flannel, but does not wear nearly as well as the commercial bias tape.

- Bring cutting mat, ruler, and rotary cutter if you would prefer to cut squares at activity day.

- Bring your sewing machine. A clover slash cutter or good sewing scissors and a walking foot will be helpful.

If you have made similar potholders, please bring to share ideas.

“Which Way Do I Go?” - Chenille Potholders

Chenille potholders are planned as the “activity” for NIQ Activity Day on February 10, 2018. These potholders are easy to make, are sure to be a hit with family and friends and (for those of you who want to make one or more extra) promise to be a best seller at the Country Store during the 2019 NIQ Quilt show.

* Clarice Drube passed away last August. It was her mission before her death to have our Activity Blocks completed and ready for 2018.

Although simple in design, they are a tribute to Clarice and all she did for our guild and our craft.

MEMBERSHIP DUES ARE DUE NOW!!

Membership is alive and healthy. As we start 2018, we have a total of paid 182 members which includes about 29 NEW members. Membership's main goal for 2018 is to keep the new members informed of all of our activities so they can get the most out of their membership dollars. I will be e-mailing them about the upcoming meetings and programs plus information concerning Activity Day. The second goal is to make sure that those wanting to come to a meeting and do not like to drive at night or any other time, will be offered a ride from a member living in their area. Please, if you do need a ride, contact me at the above number, and I will find a member willing to take the opportunity to help a member enjoy our guild. My third goal is to meet as many of you at different activities to help you be involved and meet our members. I thoroughly enjoy my experiences with the guild and its many talented members. I learned early that the best way to get something from a group is to give something to the group. I hope I have succeeded. Additionally, if I can help you with any other guild-related information, please call me.

"Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day.". - Sally Koch

Happy New Year everyone! Here comes another year, with all the hopes and ideas we all plan to achieve. I am making my lists with great expectations of getting them all done.....LOL!! As you do YOUR planning, please include coming to help with Community Service projects. We meet at Bear Paw on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. Our next events are January 9th and February 13th. I also be setting up quilts to be worked on at Activity Day. We have a lot of fun and get a lot of quilting done. The magic is in our fingers and hearts and are poured into every quilt we complete. Have a great New Year. May you achieve all you want and may you get all your UFOs finished!

Happy New Year from your Hospitality Committee! The beginning of the year often has us thinking about improving our eating habits but by the end of the month we're also looking ahead to Valentine's Day. For the January meeting we invite you to share treats that are love inspired. We all like to shower our loved ones with sweet treats but maybe you have something that is less sugar and more healthy minded. Whatever you want to bring to share it will be appreciated. We will again have a board for you to post a copy of your recipe for members that are developing their collection.

Important Note: If you or another member you know doesn't receive the newsletter, be sure to contact membership and confirm your email

information. Typos mean we're human, but can be corrected!

Quilt Retreats Nancy Barr (208) 691-8432

Guild members voted at the November meeting for the theme of the 2019 Quilt Show and the winner is….................. It’s a Quilt World, After All!

Thanks to everyone for casting your ballots. Our featured quilter for the show will be Barb Lambrecht. We are very pleased she has agreed to show her variety of beautiful and unique quilts. I hope you all are thinking, planning, sewing and quilting your entries for the quilt show, June 14 - 15, 2019.

Bring your sewing machine and a couple or three projects to work on, either to complete or start anew and join the group attending the Spring Retreat at Palouse Divide on April 12-15. Palouse divide is a conference center in the woods east of Potlatch, Idaho at the top of Palouse Divide (old ski resort). It is about 95 miles from Coeur d' Alene via US 95. Directions: Drive south on US HWY 95 toward Moscow/Lewiston for about 66 miles and turn left onto HWY 6. Drive about 23 miles and turn right onto NFD 377 Road. Palouse Lodge is approximately 6.2 miles.

2019 Quilt Show Linda Cathey (208) 215-4658

Each attendee will have an individual banquet size table to set up your own sewing area in a large room with a beautiful mountain view. The sleeping area is downstairs where 2-4 people share a room with twin beds with the bathrooms and showers down the hall. Since we are usually all girls we can use the men’s bathroom facilities too. Shirley will prepare our breakfast about 9 and a dinner at 5 for our enjoyment so we aren’t interrupted to go fix dinner! She will accommodate dietary restrictions if attendees have any. She is a pretty good cook too!

Shirley is also into antiques and has several for sale and does have recycled wool for sale. We can bring our own lunches, snacks and wine for happy hour. (I plan on bringing a large pot of soup for one of the lunches). A small kitchenette is available to us in the sewing room.

Please come and enjoy the fun and fellowship. Cost is $240.00 Arrive on Thursday @ noon and leave at noon on

Sunday. Registration form is on the web site www.northidahoquilters.com under Activities. $75.00 holds your spot with the balance due 30 days before the retreat. Fall Retreat is scheduled for September 27-31, 2018 at Glacier Camp at Flathead Lake. Cost is $290.00.

A few silly games and a visit from one or 2 quilt shops from the area are planned for your enjoyment. But agenda is mainly sewing to your heart's content and making new friends from the guild. You can bring your slippers and pajamas and either sew late or early morning which ever you desire. Come have some fun girl time!

The raffle quilt for the next quilt show is off to a good start. We introduced the block at the Nov NIQ meeting. There was a great response and many quilters committed to making a block. We have requested that that the blocks be turned in to us at the Jan meeting. If you have questions you may contact Connie Antonelli or Sally Clouse.

Seems like after the holidays the first thing on everyone’s priority list is to start a new Diet! The Library is no different; it's time to pare down and sort through our library resources to cull out all the not-so-popular sleepers. We’ve received some duplicate copies of books, so this is a great opportunity for us to “share the wealth.” At the January guild meeting, the Library will have some of these books for sale at great prices. Be sure to check this out; you don’t want to miss any “gems.”

Speaking of “gems”, we also plan to continue the sale of our recycled quilt magazines for .25¢ per issue. Be sure to check those out! We’ve generated so much interest in these old issues that you’ll find them located at a separate table from the library. Thanks to all for your donations and interest.

Minutes from November 27, 2017 Meeting Darla Finney (208) 664-5050

President: Betty Franzatti called the meeting to order at 6:03 pm. The September meeting minutes were

approved as published in the newsletter. Linda Clevenger won $72.50 in the 50/50 raffle. Four new members

were introduced. We were all encouraged to meet our new members and make them feel welcome to our guild.

Betty told us that our treasurer, Anita Snook, has permanently moved south. The by-laws state that the

president is to appoint a replacement and she has appointed Andi Schoutens to be treasurer. We all appreciate

Andi's willingness to fill this very important position.

Audit Report: Andi Schoutens reported that Anita Snook did an excellent job keeping the guild records

accurate and easy to evaluate. Andi recommended that if it is the Committee Chairman who is requesting

reimbursement that a Board Member sign as the approval signature. Andi also recommended that Anita's

method for tracking income and expenditures and comparing those figures with the budget be continued as it

allows an easy evaluation of our financial picture. Based on her review, Andi found the financial records to be

in order and she commended Anita for her excellent job as treasurer and keeping the Guild solvent.

Treasurer: Andi Schoutens gave the following Treasurer's report: Treasurer's Report from 9/25/17 through

11/2/17: Income - Operation Account $2,507.15 , Retreat Account $1,445.00, Total Income = $3,952.15;

Expenses - Operation Account $3,603.52, Retreat Account $6,856.00, Total Expenses= $10,459.52; Checkbook

Balance =$5,201.72.

Sally Clouse read a letter to the members that was prepared by Sue Otis. It explained the current financial

situation of our Guild and covered the past surpluses and the past expenses that were both chosen and

unforeseen. We have learned the benefit of a balanced budget. Several fund raiser suggestions were mentioned

and they will be acted on or reevaluated in the coming months and years. Kids' Quilt Camp is able to pay for

itself now and there are many interesting speakers to bring to our meetings that don't need to travel across the

country so they won't cost as much. Operating costs have been reduced by moving our website to a less

expensive hosting company but it was imperative that we carry an insurance policy so that is an added expense.

Sally also mentioned the rumor about the possibility of embezzlement and that it is absolutely false. Everything

that was done in the past and that will be done by our board in the future was done with honesty and with the

best interest of the Guild in mind. We will learn from the past and make the best decisions we can in the future.

Our books are audited annually by members who are not on the board and any member can review the books

upon request. As Guild members we can do our part by entering our quilts into the quilt show and helping to

make it a success and also by encouraging our friends to become Guild members.

Activity Day: Vice-President Pam Moore reported that 27 ladies attended the last Activity Day and the

project was microwave bowl covers. They made extras that will be going to the craft fair on Saturday,

December 2nd in Post Falls. The next Activity Day will be Saturday, December 9th and attendees will be

making pinwheel blocks that will be donated to Community Service. Instructions for the blocks are in the

newsletter. Community Service members will be there to tie quilts. There will be a potluck and Pam asked

anyone attending to bring a dish-to-share and to bring the recipe so people can take a picture with their phones

if they want to make it at home. There will also be a Christmas Party and if you want to exchange a gift just

bring a gift wrapped only in a brown paper grocery bag so that all the gifts look the same. They will be meeting

at the American Legion on Poleline in Post Falls at 9:30 am to 3 pm on Saturday, December 9th.

Fundraising: Patty Nutting/ Dianna Swindle reported for Patty that the Craft Bazaar will be on December 2nd

at the Presbyterian Church in Post Falls. She also said there are past quilt show pins for sale for $1 each.

Quilt Show: Linda Cathey reminded us that the date for our next quilt show is June 14-15, 2019. Linda told

us that every member can have a quilt ready to enter in the show if they get started now. The quilt show

committee had their first meeting in November and are proud to announce that the featured quilter at the show

will be Barb Lambrecht. They also narrowed the quilt show theme down to three possibilities and handed out

ballots so guild members could vote for their favorite one. The choices were: It's a Quilt World After All,

Threads Through Time, and Threaded Memories. The winning theme will be announced in the January

newsletter.

Minutes from November 27, 2017 Meeting Darla Finney (208) 664-5050

Membership: Nona Kay Barclay reports that 79 members attended the meeting tonight. We have 178

members which includes 28 new members. Nona Kay reminded us that it's important to make new members

feel welcome and invite them to sit with us and include them in our conversations. She would like volunteers to

be Quilting Buddies or "QB's" for Newbies. Also, we need to bring those members who can't drive at night to

our meetings. She asked that anyone who needs a ride to contact her and she will find someone who can pick

them up. Nona Kay has old printed directories for anyone who wants one.

Programs and Workshops: Sharon Howe/ Nona Kay Barclay reported for Sharon that the workshop for Meg

Hawkey is in March. Registration for the workshop has only one place left and the cost is $50. Meg will have a

new design just for our workshop. Pat Speth will be our speaker and have a workshop in May and sign-ups for

that will begin in January.

Raffle Quilt: Connie Antonelli showed a sample of the blocks for the 2019 raffle quilt. The block is the

"courthouse steps". Members were asked to make them out of civil war type fabrics. We are not to use any

solid, metallic, batik, or 30's fabrics. Instruction sheets were provided and members are to bring the blocks to

the January meeting. Contact Connie at 208-682-6387 or [email protected], or Sally at 208-765-5725

or [email protected], for more information.

Library: Michele Sowers reported that recycled magazine sales have been very successful and members seem

to be enjoying it. Kathleen Billingsley will help and they plan to bring them to Activity Day also.

Raffle Quilt Ticket Sales: Kay Vancleave & Carol Neihoff; The Guild was given three quilts to donate to

charities as raffle quilts. The board decided that we would raffle them ourselves during those years that we don't

have a quilt show. Kay displayed the first quilt to be raffled and told us that the tickets are $1 each and members

were encouraged to buy 10 tickets or take 10 to sell. She also expressed appreciation to Cherie Vidovich for

printing the tickets for us again.

Greeter Coordinator: Arless Scheet; There is a sheet with groups listed that are available to be greeters and

Arless asked members to include their group if it's not already listed. She also told new members to talk to her

and she would be happy to introduce them to other members.

Retreats: Nancy Barr; Arless Scheet reported for Nancy that information for upcoming retreats is on the

website. The spring retreat will be held at Palouse Divide on April 12 - 15 and the cost is $230. The fall retreat

will be at Glacier Camp and the cost for that one is $290. A $75 deposit is required for each retreat. Arless said

to be sure and fill out the form for the retreat you want to attend and include which retreat your deposit is for on

your check. She also said that the form for the Glacier Camp has been corrected showing September. 27- 30,

2018.

Website; Mary Wallgren; If we see any mistakes on the website Mary wants us to let her know. She said Sue

Otis did a good job setting up our website and she will do her best to maintain it. Mary also reminded us about

the coupons that only members received from Quilting Bee that are good until March and encouraged us to use

them.

Carlene Litz showed us a recipe book. It was one of "too many" that were ordered five years ago. Carlene said

there are 12 members who contributed to the recipe book that are attending the meeting tonight. She held up a

beautiful redwork dish towel that would be awarded to the person who got the most signatures in a recipe book

from those contributing members. The winner would need to buy a recipe book to collect the signatures and the

books are $5 each.

Betty Franzatti asked everyone who made a mystery quilt last year at Activity Day please bring them up for

show and tell. Pam Moore said there are 15 people who have signed up to get the pattern for this year's mystery

quilt and the sign-ups are now closed.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:43 pm.
