Summary

This document provides an introduction and overview to a few of the different softwares that are available for alarm management systems mainly for the oil and gas industry It also provides some alternatives to using alarm management systems

The following alarm management systems are covered DynAMo ProcessVue Exaquantum AlarmInsight AgileOps and TiPS LogMate This comparative paper provides an overview of some of the different specifications for the alarm management systems

An alarm system is a basic operator support system for managing abnormal situations by warning the operator about abnormal process conshyditions that require timely assessment and possibly corrective actions to maintain plant goals in terms of safety productivity environment and efficiency

Introduction

5

As a best practice in designing an alarm system an alarm philosophy and specification is developed during engineering phase which forms the basis for alarm system design

After commissioning and when the system is opshyerational there is no process or system that will conshytinuously monitor the alarm system for its efficient functioning or if it is supporting the operators in the desired way

If there are too many alarms during and after an incidence too many unwarranted alarms with incorrect priorities set or too many alarms are shelved or standing without any operator response then an alarm system is considered inefficient Such a system over a period of time could cause fatigue to operators and could lead to incidences involving production loss or safety risks

Hence an alarm management system has become a necessity to continuously identify the deshyficiencies in the alarm system and corrective actions are taken to improve and maintain the higher effishyciency and usability of the system With the continshyuous improvement in alarm system the alarm manshyagement system also helps create a better working environment for operators as they do not get overly stressed due to too many or unwarranted alarms

Why do we need alarm management systems

Many alarm system owners would use an alarm management system to help them to fetch KPIrsquos and to analyse the efficiency of their process control and alarm system Nevertheless many site owners will not use an alarm management system and instead try to extract the data from their alarm system or historians to make their own reports and KPIrsquos By doing this they are cutting the cost of licenses Additionally working on the alarm management system can be time consuming if your employees are not trained well or donrsquot have the time to use the system regularly

The alarm system also provides historical data in the form of an alarm and event log which is used for analysing the process to avoid getting into abnormal conditions and assessing the right correcshytive actions to avoid any incidences

About alarm management systems

The concept of alarm management became more structured and understandable with the inshytroduction of various standards such as EEMUA 191 ISA 182 and IEC 62682

Alarm management standards provide KPI metrics to identify how well an alarm systems is functioning and to help rationalise the system in order to make it more effective and usable

With the development of standards control system suppliers and other leading software suppliers started designing their own alarm manshyagement software applications These software systems collect the alarm and event data from the control system store them in the database and analyse the data to provide various KPI reports in graphical or tabular formats The reports can be downloaded in different formats such as excel or PDF for distribution Some applications also provide scheduled reports directly emailed to the configshyured email IDs

With the help of these KPI reports operations management can analyse the alarm system perforshymance and decide on the corrective actions needed in order to improve the performance KPI metrics thresholds in the standards provide necessary guidelines to achieve the level of performance of an alarm system but sometimes companies develop

alarm system performance KPIs

For a greenfield project it is important that the alarm management system and improvement processes are developed and implemented from the project stage That will make AMS application a part of standard operating procedure and will conshytinuously support operations throughout the life cycle

For a brownfield installation it is advisable to implement the alarm management application to review how the alarm system is functioning Correcshytive actions such as an alarm rationalisation project will help make the alarm system more efficient Alarm management application will provide a conshytinuous feedback based on which regular correcshytive actions can be taken

Involvement of operators and strong desire from operations management is quite vital in improving the alarm system Inputs from other stakeholders such as instrument electrical IT and safety discishyplines will be helpful in rationalising the alarms

Remember that improving an alarm system improves the working environment for operators and will contribute to higher safety and better proshyductivity Oslashyvind Hagen copy Equinor

Alarm services

An alternative to alarm management systems is alarm management services Alarm manageshyment services provides you with the maintenance necessary to reduce alarm system degradation The companies providing this service are alarm experts Normally they perform these services without using expensive licensed tools and instead use the alarm system itself to extract data and analyse these to create reports to the customers

One advantage with this approach is that the alarm service provider will monitor your alarm system performance on a regular basis as opposed to when performing this yourselves it will be dependent on available resources in you organisashytion Depending on the contract monitoring can be done daily and give you a unique possibility to get feedback when a change causes change(s) in the alarm performance For example if your system is changed by your control system supplier and they use a wrong priority or for other reason your alarm service supplier sees any upsets in the system the alarm service provider can warn you so you can make corrective actions while the control system supplier is still working on the system

With these types of service agreements you will have access to alarm specialists at any time in addition to the alarm system having regular health checks

The service provider can also take responsibilshyity to make work packages to rectify or adjust the alarm system when needed to avoid the alarm system degrading year by year The service provider can get to know your installation almost as well as your own employees over time and can use the knowledge to provide you with more advanced services such as alarm cleaning standardisation of texts and grouping alarms so that the installation is operated safely with focus on environment health and production

This includes but is not limited tobull Avoid creeping changes on the alarm systembull Improving and optimising the alarm systembull Updated and maintained alarm systembull Reduced chance of human mistakes and less

risk of shutdownsbull Better informed operators who are equipped

to handle difficult situationsbull Improved working environment for operatorsbull Cost effective by eliminating alarm project

after modificationbull Results in improved production and safety

The service prover will ensure thatbull An alarm specialist is available to the company when neededbull The alarm philosophies are followed in modshyifications so the system will remain healthy at all timesbull The alarm system health check will be performed regularlybull The personnel will be trained to handle the alarm system and its functionalitybull Systems are up to standards and according to the applicableguidelinesbull Alarm projects according to IEC 62682ISA 182 with guidance from EEMUA 191 and company regulations

Page 3: A comparison of Alarm Management Systems · 2021. 1. 15. · COMPARISON OF ALARM MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS - REV 02 6 About alarm management systems The concept of alarm management became

4

Oslashyvind Hagencopy Equinor

The service prover will ensure thatbull An alarm specialist is available to the company when neededbull The alarm philosophies are followed in modshyifications so the system will remain healthy at all timesbull The alarm system health check will be performed regularlybull The personnel will be trained to handle the alarm system and its functionalitybull Systems are up to standards and according to the applicableguidelinesbull Alarm projects according to IEC 62682ISA 182 with guidance from EEMUA 191 and company regulations

bull All Alarm management applications support current alarm management standards bull They are module based and licensing cost is based on modules selected no of tags and users bull Hardware and software requirements are similar and will vary based on required system sizebull Applications use Microsoft SQL as databasebull Applications provided by Control System suppliers have a proven interface with their control system But these can be used with other systems as these applications are System neutralbull All Applications use common protocols to fetch the data such as OPC ODBC etc and support all major

control systems

When selecting the Alarm Management tool one should look for following at the leastbull No of tags average no of alarms and events generated by the systembull Network topology and security and how the AM equipment will be connectedbull Data connectivity via OPC or ODBC or any other methodbull Data security and backupbull KPI Metrics reporting format (tabular or graphical)bull Ease of getting customized reportsbull User roles and responsibilitiesbull Service Support and response timebull Software Upgrade and updates

When looking into the different alarm management systems the specifications and benefits a few general observations about all the systems were made
