This small Work was commenced in th e form of a

Memoir

of

t h e

Saviour,

an d arranged

f o r

th e

benefit

of a

c l a s s

of

young

persons, to whom

their

teacher was

desirous

of imparting

a clear

and

accurate knowledge

of Hi s Life an d Actions. The

early

part of

the

history

i s

easily

arranged

from

t h e

narrative

of

t h e

Evangelists

; but

i t i s

n o t

easy

to

s e l e c t

t he most

suitable

n ar

r a t i v e ,

when

two,

three,

or

four

r e l a t e t h e

same

occurrence

with equal truth an d simplicity. This led

t he

writer t o di rect

t h e

at ten ti on of

h er pupils

to

t h e

several narratives, o n e a f t e r

t h e

other,

an d

to present

th e minute

circumstances

to

them

again

in

the f orm of

questions

upon t h e whole, which

e l i c i t e d

a

simply beautiful

d e t a i l

of each event, presenting

a picture

so

vivid

as

to leave th e con vi cti on of i t s

truth upon

th e mind of

each attentive l i s t e n e r .

The

Work thus insensibly assumed the

form of a Harmony,

before

t he Author

was aware

that such

works

already existed in

t h e literary world. The

d i f f i c u l t i e s

of

historical

arrangement

have since

that period b e e n removed

by

t h e

us e

of t he

co mp en di o us wo rks

of

Crabbe,

Doddridge,

Newcome, an d

others,

which

are

beyond th e reach of children,

and t oo large f o r

class-books.

I t h as also b e e n t h e Author s

practice

to

refer to t he wri ti ng s of t h e Old

Testament,

when

t h e

Prophecies are

quoted or alluded

t o ,

an d some times to t he

Epistles

in

confirmation

of

doctrine. After a l l ,

i t i s but an

outline, incomplete i n many

points,

an d i t i s merely as such

that i t

i s

offered to th e Christian Teacher, in t he hope that,

i f h e adopt

the plan, his
