Air Quality in Delhi

The Air Quality in Delhi, the capital of India, according to World Health Organization (WHO) survey of 1600

world cities, is the worst of any major city in the world, including Karachi, and Beijing, which also have poor

quality of air.

(The two other cities, in India, that have worse air quality than Delhi, are Gwalior, in Madhya Pradesh, and Raipur, in Chhattisgarh)

In Delhi poor quality air damages irreversibly the lungs of 2.2 million or 50 percent of all children.

A Note…..

• Air Pollution in India, it is estimated, kills 1.5 million people every year; it is the fifth largest killer in India. India has the world highest death rate from chronic respiratory diseases, and asthma, according to WHO.

• There are many types of pollutions and pollutants .

• But in Delhi acute is air and water pollution and because of air pollution (The 1997 White Paper sponsored by the Ministry of Environment)

• Everyday many people are killed because there are no forests in Delhi.

• Air pollution in Delhi is mainly caused by factories and industries . People throw wastes in the rivers and snack’s wrappers and kitchen wastes on the roads

• Forests already proposed various measures to bring down pollution caused by traffic, including smoothing

• The flow of traffic with parking regulations and bringing down total traffic by mandatory limits on driving

Pollution in Delhi

Who does the pollution Bring

The pollution is from –• The vehicles• The smoke from factories and industries• Burning of plastic and polythene wastes• By the growing population• By cutting of trees• By burning solid wastes.

As many as 500 vehicles exist for every Kilometre of the road stretch in Delhi whereas the figure for Mumbai and Kolkata is 350, and for Chennai, this figure is less than 100 vehicles

smoke and causing noise when people are sleeping

Suspended particulate matter

• These are fine particles of soot, dust etc. They are found in ambient air due to the combined effect of various natural factors. In the case of Delhi, presence of extensively large arid and semi arid regions in north-west, loss of moisture from top soil strata, etc. and anthropogenic factors, i.e., extensive urbanization and construction activities, increasing vehicular

Why & How we breath

All animals and plants breath to live. We can’t live without air for 5 minute

even . The oxygen of the air is transferred in the tiny clustered

chambers called aveoli to the tiny blood vessels and in reverse carbon

dioxide is transferred out.

In the cell , the food (glucose) is broken down into carbon dioxide and water (aerobic respiration) using oxygen and energy is

released. For that, pure air is essential for all, to survive. Once it was free and abundant, but not Now and in Delhi –the WORST.

Should Delhites be forced to abandon Delhi again and go Daulatabad.

Gilman started in 1886 during the Colorado Silver Boom, but Eagle Mine later became the center of lead and zinc mining in Colorado. In 1984, the EPA ordered Gilman to be abandoned because of toxic pollutants and contamination of ground water

• “I was very struck by the fact that theimpacts of climate change areundermining a whole range of humanrights: rights to food, safe water andhealth and education. But it is alsodisplacing people, which is very likely tocause not just human distress butpotentially conflict. So for me it’s a very, very serious issue of human rights.”

My concern ….My idea …..• Like me, you all must have felt the fresh

breath after the spell of a rain in Summer after noon.

• Like me you all must have observed the particles in the sun beam entering through the slit of the window.

• Observed the difference in breathing, in morning & Afternoon , before and after a spell of rain.

• From that I got the Idea - Washing of the Air, Cleansing the dust & pollutants.

• But Delhi air is Very Dirty- It needs Detergent, Soda etc .

• While we clean, the dirt of the clothes are being separated by detergent water.

My device – “Pramila Air Purifier “

My device is Simple, Cheap, Affordable by slum dwellers yet effective in such emergency

but in emergency my device will help to a great extent.

and of course it is a modest approach...

I do agree with Sunita Narain (DG-CSE) who said“…we must focus on prevention and not treatment . We need

to improve the environment ,reduce the disease burden ……”

Apparatus & ingredients required (with apx. Cost Rs.1100) :

1. One 9 inch high speed exhaust fan (Rs.700).2. G.I. Wire to make the shape of funnel and holding the apparatus (Rs.50).3. Polythene Sack to make funnel over the G.I. wire frame (Rs 2/).4. 2 big water Jars or Dalda dubba (Rs 50)5. 2 small chocolate Jars (for air chambers) (Rs 15) which can be put inside the

big jars.6. 1” Polythene pipes 4 meters (Rs. 60) so that funnel cab kept out side the

living room to avoid noise of the fan.7. Synthetic mosquito net 3 meters (Rs.60)8. Frame making ( welding) charge (Rs.50)9. M-seal or fevicol to make connections and covers air tight (Rs30).10. 2.5” Polythene pipe of 1 meter for filling and drainage of detergent water

and soda water to fit with Big Jars (Rs. 10)11. One pouch Surf Exel & 250 gms Baking soda. (Rs.50)

The principle:

• First air is suctioned through a large area single layermosquito net filter.

• Then filtered through double layered mosquito netwhich will absorb coarse dusts and fine fibrousparticles.

• Then Air is blown to pass through two liquid chambersin series:

• Chamber-1 - the detergent water chamber. The air isblown into solution through numerous small pores, which will pass through the solution in small bobbles. This will create foam continuously in small amount .The Liquid layer & foam layer will catch most of theParticulate Matters, Organic molecules, unburnedcarbon, unburned fuels, oil vapors (from kitchen andindustries) .

• Chamber-2 – Backing soda water. The airfrom chamber -1 is passed throughbacking soda water which will absorbfurther particulate matters, carbondioxide, Nitrogen oxides, detergent smelland pure air will be released in the inplace of poluted air of Delhi.

Procedure

• Make big funnel by using G.I wire & pollythine sack, which can house an exhaust fan mounted reverse position to suck air.

• The Funnel mouth is kept downward, so that heavier pollutants will fall down without entering it.

• Mount the exhaust fan in reverse to act for sucking the air.

• Hang a circular mosquito net piece complete loosely from the mouth of the funnel and put a small sand pouch in its centre so that it will not be sucked by the fan and to keep it in hanging position.

• Similarly hang the double layered mosquito net above the first layer net.

• From the apex of the funnel, channelize the air inside an air chamber floating beneath the detergent water (6 ltrs water+4 spoon surf exel) in a sealed bigger chamber which has room for air above the level of the detergent water. The room above the detergent water, is divided by a layer of mosquito net so that foam will not be allowed to enter into the top portion of the chamber.

• The air release from the first chamber be passed similarly again through backing soda water. In both the chamber heat will be produced due to bursting of bubbles and reaction of carbon dioxide with backing soda solution and released air will be warmer.

• In both the chambers, dirty solutions are drained and fresh solutions are filled after every 4 to 5 days depending upon the dirt it accumulated.

Pictures and procedure of my Device

Advantages

• It is cheap ( less than Rs.1100)• It can be done by child like me.• It is easy to maintain.• Raw materials are easily available.

My small suggestation

• Let the children be in the house in the very polluted days.

• Let the C.D.s/ DVDs with best teachings of the best schools be provided to students in minimum cost ,who can learn by DVD players when not going to school.

• Don’t burn incense sticks in home and temples.

Live and let others to live in earth

Do not destroy the habitable condition of earth

Do not allow the furious sun rays to enter

My big appeal
