    The task of editing, deciding which material would be excluded fromthe original dictation and that to be included in the published version, wasentrusted to William Thetford.The edit of the Text used herein is Bill’s, ashe was directed by Jesus.The Workbook and Manual are as close to the un-edited generation of “scribed” dictation from Jesus to Helen as is availableto us at this time.

    Similarly, the CAPITALIZATION and hyphenation of some of thewords, along with the use of parenthesis and punctuation, remain consistentwith the style of the “scribes” used in the source material.

    We recognize and honor the original intent of our Savior Jesus to beknown as author with Helen as a “just” scribe whose name is not to beassociated with authorship, but with the willingness to hear his voice andtake notes.

    In the months from September to the beginning of December 1975,reportedly Helen scribed the section of A Course In Miracles which hasbeen known up till now as the Clarification of Terms and was considered asan “appendix.”

    For this presentation of Jesus’ masterpiece, it has been placed asPREFACE and is simply titled THE USE OF TERMS which is consistentwith the original heading of the dictation and retains the style of itsscribing.

    If you find our placement of THE USE OF TERMS inappropriatewe ask your forgiveness, yet having been guided in this, we pray that yourexposure to and application of this “required course” allows anunderstanding for this seeming liberty.

    You will read in the section entitled The Use Of Terms a referencedeclaring that “SOUL” had been excluded due to the controversial natureof the term itself. In this edition of A Course In Miracles you will noticerestoration of the “SOUL” to the prominent position it originally occupiedwithin the lexicon of understanding the Course was initially given toHelen and Bill to aid them by Jesus Himself.As you read this masterpiece,you will come to understand that the SOUL is not controversial to Jesus atall, it is actually infinitely abundant, eternally vital and wholly complete. Theseeming controversy caused by the use of the term “SOUL” could only bewithin a mind divided against itself unaware of its REALITY.

    This is not a course in theoretical philosophy, nor is it concerned withprecise terminology in connection with origins. It is concerned only withAtonement, or the correction of perception.The means of the Atonementis forgiveness. The structure of “individual consciousness” is essentiallyirrelevant, because it is a concept representing the “original error” or the“original sin.”To study the error itself does not lead to correction, if you areindeed to succeed in overlooking the error. And it is just this process ofoverlooking at which the course aims.

    All terms are potentially controversial, and those who seekcontroversy will find it.Yet those who seek clarification will find it as well.They must, however, be willing to overlook controversy, recognizing that itis a defense against truth in the form of a delaying maneuver.Theologicalconsiderations as such are necessarily controversial, since they depend onbelief and can therefore be accepted or rejected. A universal theology isimpossible, but a universal experience is not only possible but necessary. Itis this experience toward which the course is directed. Here aloneconsistency becomes possible, because here alone uncertainty ends.

    This course remains within the ego framework, where it is needed. Itis not concerned with what is beyond all error because it is planned only toset the direction towards it. Therefore it uses words, which are symbolic,and cannot express what lies beyond symbols. It is always the ego thatquestions because it is only the ego that doubts.The course merely givesanother Answer, once a question has been raised. However, this Answerdoes not attempt to resort to inventiveness or ingenuity.These are attributesof the ego. The course is simple. It has one function and one goal. Only inthat does it remain wholly consistent because only that can be consistent.

    The ego will demand many answers this course does not give. It doesnot recognize as questions the mere form of a question to which an answer isimpossible.The ego may ask,“How did the impossible occur?”,“to what didthe impossible happen?”, and may ask in many forms.Yet there is no answer;only an experience. Seek only this, and do not let theology delay you.

    You will notice that the emphasis on structural issues in the course isbrief and early. Afterwards and soon it drops away to make way for thecentral teaching. Since you have asked for clarification, however, these aresome of the terms that are used:

    The term “mind” is used to represent the activating agent of spirit,supplying its creative energy.When the term is capitalized it refers to Godor Christ (i.e. the Mind of God or the Mind of Christ).

    Spirit is the Thought of God Which He created like Himself.The unified

  • Spirit is God’s one Son, or Christ. In this world,because the mind is split, theSons of God appear to be separate. Nor do their minds seem to be joined. Inthis illusory state the concept of an “individual mind” seems to bemeaningful. It is therefore described in the course as if it has two parts; spiritand ego. Spirit is the part that is still in contact with God through the HolySpirit, Who abides in this part but sees the other part as well. The term“soul” is not used except in direct Biblical quotations because of its highlycontroversial nature. It would, however, be an equivalent of “spirit,” withthe understanding that being of God it is eternal and was never born.

    The other part of the mind is entirely illusory and makes onlyillusions. Spirit retains the potential for creating, but its Will which is God’s,seems to be imprisoned while the mind is not unified. Creation continuesunabated because that is the Will of God.This Will is always unified, andtherefore has no meaning in this world. It has no opposite and no degrees.

    The mind can be right or wrong, depending on the voice to which itlistens.“Right-mindedness” listens to the Holy Spirit, forgives the world, andthrough Christ’s vision sees the real world in its place.This is the final vision,the last perception, the condition in which God takes the final step Himself.Here time and illusions end together. “Wrong-mindedness” listens to theego and makes illusions; perceiving sin and justifying anger, and seeingguilt, disease and death as real. Both this world and the real world areillusions, because right-mindedness merely overlooks, or forgives whatnever happened. Therefore it is not the “One-mindedness” of the ChristMind,Whose Will is one with God’s.

    In this world the only remaining freedom is the freedom of choice;always between two choices or two voices. Will is not involved inperception at any level and has nothing to do with choice. Consciousness isthe receptive mechanism, receiving messages from above or below; fromthe Holy Spirit or the ego. Consciousness has levels and awareness can shiftquite dramatically, but it cannot transcend the perceptual realm. At itshighest it becomes aware of the real world, and can be trained to do soincreasingly. Yet the very fact that it has levels and can be traineddemonstrates that consciousness cannot reach knowledge.

    Illusions will not last.Their death is sure, and this alone is certain intheir world. It is the ego’s world because of this. What is the ego? But adream of what you really are. A thought you are apart from your Creatorand a wish to be what He created not. It is a thing of madness, not reality atall.A name for namelessness is all it is.A symbol of impossibility; a choice foroptions that do not exist. We call it that to help us understand that it isnothing but an ancient thought that what is made has immortality.But whatcould come of this except a dream which like all dreams could only die?

    What is the ego? Nothingness, but in a form that seems like something. In

  • a world of form the ego cannot be denied, for it alone seems real. Howcould God’s Son as He created him abide in form or in a world of form?Who asks you to define the ego and explain how it arose can be but hewho thinks it real, and seeks by definition to ensure that its illusive nature isconcealed behind the words that seem to make it so.There is no definitionfor a lie that serves to make it true. Nor can there be a truth that liesconceal effectively.

    The ego’s unreality is not denied by words nor is its meaning clearbecause its nature seems to have a form.Who can define the undefinable?And yet there is an answer even here.We cannot really make a definitionfor what the ego is, but we can say what it is not.And this is shown to uswith perfect clarity. It is from this that we deduce all that the ego is. Lookat its opposite and you can see the only answer that is meaningful.

    The ego’s opposite in every way, – in origin, effect and consequence –we call a miracle.And here we find all that is not the ego in the world. Hereis the ego’s opposite and here alone we look on what the ego was. For herewe see all that it seemed to do, and cause and its effects must still be one.Where there was darkness now we see the light.What was the ego? Whatthe darkness was.Where was the ego? Where the darkness was.

    What is it now and where can it be found? Nothing and nowhere.Now the light has come. Its opposite has gone without a trace.Where evilwas there now is holiness.What is the ego? What the evil was.Where is theego? In an evil dream that but seemed real while you were dreaming it.Where there was crucifixion stands God’s Son.What is the ego? Who hasneed to ask? Where is the ego? Who has need to seek for an illusion nowthe dreams are gone?

    What is a miracle? A dream as well. But look at all the aspects of thisdream, and you will never question any more. Look at the kindly worldyou see stretch forth before you as you walk in gentleness. Look at thehelpers all along the way you travel, happy in the hope of Heaven and thecertainty of peace.And look an instant, too, on what you left behind at lastand finally passed by. This was the ego – all the cruel hate, the need forvengeance and the cries of pain, the fear of dying and the urge to kill, thebrotherless illusion and the self that seemed alone in all the universe.

    This terrible mistake about yourself the miracle corrects as gently as aloving mother sings her child to rest. Is not a song like this what you wouldhear? Would it not answer all you thought to ask, and even make thequestion meaningless? Your questions have no answer, being made to stillGod’s Voice,Which asks of everyone one question only:“Are you ready yetto help Me save the world?” Ask this instead of what the ego is, and youwill see a sudden brightness cover up the world the ego made. No miracleis now withheld from anyone.The world is saved from what you thought it

  • was.And what it is, is wholly uncondemned and wholly pure.The miracle forgives; the ego damns. Neither need be defined except

    by this.Yet could a definition be more sure, or more in line with whatsalvation asks? Problem and answer lie together here, and having met at lastthe choice is clear. Who chooses hell when it is recognized? And whowould not go on a little while when it is given him to understand the wayis short and Heaven is his goal?

    Forgiveness is for God and toward God but not of Him. It isimpossible to think of anything He created that could need forgiveness.Forgiveness, then, is an illusion, but because of its purpose, which is theHoly Spirit’s, it has one difference. Unlike all other illusions, it leads awayfrom error and not towards it. Forgiveness might be called a kind of happyfiction; a way in which the unknowing can bridge the gap between theirperception and the truth. They cannot go directly from perception toknowledge because they do not think it is their will to do so.This makesGod appear to be an enemy instead of what He really is.And it is just thisinsane perception that makes them unwilling merely to rise up and toreturn to Him in peace.

    And so they need an illusion of Help because they are helpless; aThought of peace because they are in conflict. God knows what His Sonneeds before he asks. He is not at all concerned with form, but having giventhe content it is His Will that it be understood.And that suffices.The formadapts itself to need; the content is unchanging, as eternal as its Creator.

    The Face of Christ has to be seen before the memory of God canreturn.The reason is obvious. Seeing the Face of Christ is perception. Noone can look on knowledge. But the Face of Christ is the great symbol offorgiveness. It is salvation. It is the symbol of the real world.Whoever lookson this no longer sees the world. He is as near to Heaven as possible outsidethe gate.Yet from this gate it is no more than just a step inside. It is the finalstep.And this we leave to God. It is a symbol, too, but as the symbol of HisWill alone it cannot be divided.And so the Unity that it reflects becomesHis Will. It is the only thing still in the world in part, and yet the bridgeto Heaven.

    God’s Will is all there is. We can but go from nothingness toeverything; from hell to Heaven. Is this a journey? No,not in truth, for truthgoes nowhere. But illusions shift from place to place; from time to time.Thefinal step is also but a shift. As a perception it is partly unreal. And yet thispart will vanish.What remains is peace eternal and the Will of God.Thereare no wishes now, for wishes change. Even the wished-for can becomeunwelcome.That must be so, because the ego cannot be at peace. But Will isconstant, as the gift of God.And what He gives is always like Himself.

    This is the purpose of the Face of Christ. It is the gift of God to save His

  • Son. But look on this and you have been forgiven. How lovely does theworld become in just that single instant when you see the truth aboutyourself reflected there. Now you are sinless and behold your sinlessness.Now you are holy and perceive it so. And now the mind returns to itsCreator; the joining of the Father and the Son; the Unity of unities thatstands behind all joining but still beyond them all. God is not seen but onlyunderstood. His Son is not attacked but recognized.

    The world you see is an illusion of a world. God did not create it, forwhat He creates must be eternal as Himself.Yet there is nothing in the worldyou see that will endure forever. Some things will last in time a little whilelonger than others. But the time will come when all things visible will havean end.The body’s eyes are therefore not the means by which the real worldcan be seen, for the illusions that they look upon must lead to more illusions(of reality).And so they do. For everything they see not only will not last butlends itself to thoughts of sin and guilt.While everything that God created isforever without sin and therefore is forever without guilt.

    Knowledge is not the remedy for false perception since, being anotherlevel, they can never meet.The one correction possible for false perceptionmust be true perception. It will not endure. But for the time it lasts, itcomes to heal. For true perception is a remedy with many names.Forgiveness, salvation,Atonement, true perception, all are one.They are asone beginning with the end to lead to Oneness far beyond themselves.True perception is the means by which the world is saved from sin, for sindoes not exist.And it is this that true perception sees.

    The world stands like a block before Christ’s face. But true perceptionlooks on it as nothing more than just a fragile veil, so easily dispelled that itcan last no longer than an instant. It is seen at last for only what it is.Andnow it cannot fail to disappear, for now there is an empty place made cleanand ready.Where destruction was perceived the face of Christ appears, andin that instant is the world forgot, with time forever ended as the worldspins into nothingness from where it came.

    A world forgiven cannot last. It was the home of bodies.But forgivenesslooks past bodies.This is its holiness; this is how it heals.The world of bodiesis the world of sin, for only if there is a body is sin possible. From sin comesguilt as surely as forgiveness takes all guilt away. And once all guilt is gonewhat more remains to keep a separated world in place? For place has gone aswell along with time. Only the body makes the world seem real, for beingseparate it could not remain where separation is impossible. Forgivenessproves it is impossible because it sees it not.And what you then will overlookwill not be understandable to you, just as its opposite was onceyour certainty; just as its presence once had been your certainty.

  • This is the shift that true perception brings: what was projected out isseen within and there forgiveness lets it disappear. For there the altar to theSon is set, and there his Father is remembered.Here are all illusions broughtto truth and laid upon the altar. What is seen outside must lie beyondforgiveness, for it seems to be forever sinful.Where is hope while sin is seenas outside? What remedy can guilt expect? But seen within your mind, guiltand forgiveness for an instant lie together, side by side, upon one altar.There at last are sickness and its single remedy joined in one healingbrightness. God has come to claim His Own. Forgiveness is complete.

    And now God’s knowledge, changeless, certain, pure and whollyunderstandable, enters its Kingdom. Gone is perception, false and truealike. Gone is forgiveness, for its task is done. And gone are bodies in theblazing light upon the altar to the Son of God. God knows it is His Own asit is his. And here They join, for here the face of Christ has shone awaytime’s final instant, and now is the last perception of the world without apurpose and without a cause. For where God’s memory has come at lastthere is no journey, no belief in sin, no walls, no bodies, and the grim appealof guilt and death is there snuffed out forever.

    O my brothers, if you only knew the peace that will envelop you andhold you safe and pure and lovely in the Mind of God, you could but rushto meet Him where His altar is. Hallowed your Name and His, for they arejoined here in this holy place. Here He leans down to lift you back to Him,out of illusions into holiness; out of the world and into eternity; out of allfear and given back to Love.

    There is no need for help to enter Heaven, for you never left. Butthere is need for help beyond yourself as you (are) circumscribed by falsebeliefs of your Identity,Which God alone established in reality. Helpers aregiven you in many forms, although upon the altar They are one. Beyondeach one, there is a Thought of God, and this will never change. But theyhave names which differ for a time, for time needs symbols, being itselfunreal.Their names are legion, but we will not go beyond the names thecourse itself employs. God does not help because He knows no need. ButHe creates all Helpers of His Son while he believes his fantasies are true.Thank God for them, for they will lead you home.

    The Name of Jesus is the name of one who was a man, but saw theface of Christ in all his brothers and remembered God. So he becameidentified with Christ, a man no longer but at one with God.The man wasan illusion, for he seemed to be a separate being, walking by himself, withina body that appeared to hold his self from Self, as all illusions do.Yet who cansave unless he sees illusions, and then identifies them as what they are? Jesusremains a Savior because he saw the false without accepting it as true.AndChrist needed his form that He might appear to men and save them from

  • their own illusions.In his complete identification with the Christ, the perfect Son of God,

    His one creation and His happiness, forever like Himself and one with Him— Jesus became what all of us must be. He led the way for us to follow him.He leads us back to God because he saw the road before him, and hefollowed it. He made a clean distinction, still obscure to us, between the falseand true. He offered us all a final demonstration it is impossible to kill God’sSon; nor can his life in any way be changed by sin and evil, malice, fear ordeath. And therefore all your sins have been forgiven you because theycarried no effects at all. And so they were but dreams. Arise with him whoshowed you this because you owe him this who shared your dreams that theymight be dispelled.And shares them still to be at one with you.

    Is he the Christ? O yes, along with you. His little life on earth was notenough to teach the mighty lesson that he learned for all of us. He willremain with you to lead you from the hell you made to God. And whenyou join your will with his your sight will be his vision for the eyes ofChrist are shared. Walking with him is just as natural as walking with abrother whom you knew since you were born, for such indeed he is. Somebitter idols have been made of him who would be only brother to theworld. Forgive him your illusions and behold how dear a brother he wouldbe to you. For he will set your mind at rest at last and carry it with youunto your God.

    Is he God’s only Helper? No indeed. For Christ takes many formswith different names until their oneness can be recognized. But Jesus is foryou the bearer of Christ’s single message of the Love of God.You need noother. It is possible to read his words and benefit from them withoutaccepting him into your life.Yet he would help you yet a little more if youwill share your pains and joys with him, and leave them both to find thepeace of God.Yet still it is his lesson most of all that he would have youlearn, and it is this:

    “There is no death because the Son of God is like his Father. Nothing youcan do can change Eternal Love. Forget your dreams of sin and guilt, andcome with me instead to share the resurrection of God’s Son.And bringwith you all those whom He has sent to you to care for as I care for you.”

    Jesus is the manifestation of the Holy Spirit,Whom he called downupon the earth after he ascended into Heaven, or became completelyidentified with the Christ, the Son of God as He created him.The HolySpirit, being a creation of the One Creator, creating with him and in Hislikeness or Spirit, is eternal and has never changed. He was “called downupon the earth” in the sense that it was now possible to accept Him and tohear His Voice. His is the Voice for God, and has therefore taken form.This

  • form is not his reality Which God alone knows along with Christ, His realSon,Who is part of Him.

    The Holy Spirit is described throughout the course as giving us theanswer to the separation and bringing the plan of the Atonement to us,establishing our particular part in it, and showing us exactly what it is. Hehas established Jesus as the leader in carrying out this plan, since he was thefirst to complete his own part perfectly. All power in Heaven and earth istherefore given him, and he will share it with you when you havecompleted yours. The Atonement principle was given to the Holy Spiritlong before Jesus set it in motion.

    The Holy Spirit is described as the remaining communication linkbetween God and His separated sons. In order to fulfill this special functionthe Holy Spirit has assumed a dual function;He knows because He is part ofGod. He perceives because He was sent to save humanity. He is the greatcorrection principle; the bringer of true perception, the inherent power ofthe vision of Christ. He is the light in which the forgiven world isperceived; in which the face of Christ alone is seen. He never forgets theCreator or His Creation. He never forgets the Son of God. He never forgetsyou. And He brings the Love of your Father to you in an eternal shiningthat will never be obliterated because God has put it there.

    The Holy Spirit abides in the part of your mind that is part of theChrist Mind. He represents your Self and your Creator,Who are One. Hespeaks for God and also for you, being joined with both.And therefore it isHe Who proves them one. He seems to be a Voice, for in that form Hespeaks God’s Word to you. He seems to be a Guide through a far country,for you need that form of help. He seems to be whatever meets the needsyou think you have. But He is not deceived when you perceive your selfentrapped in needs you do not have. It is from these He would deliver you.It is from these that He would make you safe.

    You are His manifestation in this world.Your Brother calls to you to beHis Voice along with him.Alone he cannot be the Helper of God’s Son, forhe alone is functionless. But joined with you he is the shining savior of theworld, whose part in its redemption you have made complete. He offersthanks to you as well as him, for you arose with him when he began to savethe world. And you will be with him when time is over, and no traceremains of dreams of spite in which you dance to death’s thin melody. For inits place the hymn to God is heard a little while.And then the voice is gone,no longer to take form but to return to the eternal formlessness of God.

    Introduction to Miracles

    This is a course in miracles. It is a required course. Only the time youtake it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish thecurriculum. It means only that you may elect what you want to takeat a given time.The course does not aim at teaching the meaning oflove, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, atremoving the blocks to the awareness of love’s Presence, Which isyour natural inheritance.The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.

    This course can therefore be summed up very simply inthis way:

    Nothing real can be threatened.Nothing unreal exists.

    Herein lies the Peace of God.

    PRINCIPLES OF MIRACLES1. There is no order of difficulty among miracles. One is not

    “harder” or “bigger” than another. They are all the same. Allexpressions of love are maximal.

    2. Miracles as such do not matter.The only thing that matters is

  • their Source,Which is far beyond human evaluation.3. Miracles occur naturally as expressions of love.The real miracle

    is the love that inspires them. In this sense, everything thatcomes from love is a miracle.

    4. All miracles mean life, and God is the Giver of life. His Voicewill direct you very specifically.You will be told all you needto know.

    5. Miracles are habits and should be involuntary.They should notbe under conscious control. Consciously selected miracles canbe misguided.

    6. Miracles are natural.When they do NOT occur something hasgone wrong.

    7. Miracles are everyone’s right, but purification is necessary first.8. Miracles are healing because they supply a lack in that they are

    performed by those who temporarily have more for those whotemporarily have less.

    9. Miracles are a kind of exchange. Like all expressions of love,which are ALWAYS miraculous in the true sense, the exchangereverses the physical laws.They bring MORE love both to thegiver AND the receiver.

    10. The use of miracles as spectacles to INDUCE belief is wrong; or,better, is a misunderstanding of their purpose. They are reallyused FOR and BY believers.

    11. Prayer is the medium of miracles. Prayer is the naturalcommunication of the created with the Creator.Through prayerlove is received, and through miracles love is expressed.

    12. Miracles are thoughts. Thoughts can represent lower-orderor higher-order reality. This is the basic distinction betweenintellectualizing and thinking. One makes the physical and theother creates the spiritual, and we believe in what we makeor create.

    13. Miracles are both beginnings and endings. They thus alter thetemporal order. They are always affirmations of rebirth, whichseem to go back, but really go forward.They undo the past inthe present, and thus release the future.

    14. Miracles bear witness to truth. They are convincing becausethey arise from conviction.Without conviction they deteriorate

  • into magic, which is mindless, and therefore destructive; orrather, the uncreative use of mind.

    15. Each day should be devoted to miracles.The purpose of time isto enable man to learn to use it constructively. Time is thus ateaching device, and a means to an end. It will cease when it isno longer useful in facilitating learning.

    16. Miracles are teaching devices for demonstrating that it is moreblessed to give than to receive.They simultaneously increase thestrength of the giver and supply strength to the receiver.

    17. Miracles are the transcendence of the body. They are suddenshifts into invisibility, away from a sense of lower-order reality.That is why they heal.

    18. A miracle is a service. It is the maximal service one individualcan render another. It is a way of loving your neighbor asyourself. The doer recognizes his own and his neighbor’sinestimable worth simultaneously.

    19. Miracles make minds one in God.They depend on cooperation,because the Sonship is the sum of all the Souls God created.Miracles therefore rest on the laws of eternity, not of time.

    20. Miracles reawaken the awareness that the Spirit, not the body, isthe altar of truth.This is the recognition that leads to the healingpower of the miracle.

    21. Miracles are natural expressions of total forgiveness. Throughmiracles, man accepts God’s forgiveness by extending it to others.

    22. Miracles are associated with fear only because of the fallaciousbelief that darkness can HIDE.Man believes that what he cannotsee does not exist, and his physical eyes cannot see in the dark.This is a very primitive solution, and has led to a denial of theSpiritual eye. * The escape from darkness involves two stages:A. The recognition that darkness CANNOT hide. This step

    usually entails fear.B. The recognition that there is nothing you WANT to hide,

    even if you COULD.This step brings ESCAPE from fear.23. Miracles rearrange perception, and place the levels of perception

    When you have become willing to hide nothing, you willnot only be willing to enter into communion, but will alsounderstand peace and joy. Your commitment is not yet total,and that is why you still have more to learn than to teach.Whenyour equilibrium stabilizes, you will be able to teach as much asyou learn, which will give you the proper balance. Meanwhile,remember that no effort is wasted, for unless you rememberthis, you cannot avail yourselves of MY efforts, which ARElimitless. Only eternity is real.Why not use the illusion of timeconstructively?

    24. Miracles enable man to heal the sick and raise the dead becausehe made sickness and death himself, and can abolish both. YOUare a miracle, capable of creating in the likeness of your Creator.Everything else is only your own nightmare, and does not exist.Only the Creations of Light are real.

    25. Miracles are part of an interlocking chain of forgiveness which,when completed, is the Atonement.This process works all thetime, and in all the dimensions of time.I am in charge of the process of Atonement, which I undertookto begin.When you offer a miracle unto any of my brothers, youdo it unto YOURSELF and me. The reason YOU come beforeME is that I do not need miracles for my own Atonement, but Istand at the end in case you fail temporarily.The purpose of mypart in the Atonement is the canceling out of all lacks of lovewhich men could not otherwise correct.The word “sin” shouldbe changed to “lack of love,” because “sin” is a man-made wordwith threat connotations which he made up himself. No REALthreat is involved anywhere. Nothing is gained by frighteningyourselves, and it is very destructive to do so.

    26. Miracles represent FREEDOM from fear. “Atoning” reallymeans “undoing.”The undoing of fear is an essential part of theAtonement value of miracles.

    The purpose of the Atonement is to restoreEVERYTHING to you; or rather, to restore it to yourAWARENESS. You were GIVEN everything when you were

  • created, just as everyone was.When you have been restored tothe recognition of your original state, you naturally become partof the Atonement yourself. As you share MY inability totolerate lack of love in yourself and others, you MUST join theGreat Crusade to correct it. The slogan for the Crusade is“Listen, learn, and DO; ” – Listen to my voice, learn to undoerror, and DO something to correct it.

    The power to work miracles BELONGS to you. I willprovide the opportunities to do them, but YOU must be readyand willing, since you are already able. Doing them will bringconviction in the ability, since conviction really comes throughaccomplishment.The ability is the potential; the achievement isits expression; and the Atonement is the Purpose.

    27. A miracle is a universal blessing from God through me to ALLmy brothers. It is the privilege of the forgiven to forgive.

    The disciples were specifically told to be physicians ofthe Lord and to heal others. They were also told to HEALTHEMSELVES, and were promised that I would never leavethem or forsake them. Atonement is the natural profession ofthe Children of God, because they have professed me.“Heavenand earth shall pass away” simply means that they will notcontinue to exist as separate states. My word, which is theResurrection and the Light, shall not pass away because Light iseternal. YOU are the work of God, and His work is whollylovable and wholly loving.This is how a man MUST think ofhimself in his heart, because this is what he IS.

    28. Miracles are a means of organizing different levels ofconsciousness.

    Miracles come from the below or subconscious level.Revelations come from the above or superconscious level.Theconscious level is in between, and reacts to either sub- orsuperconscious impulses in varying ratios. Consciousness is thelevel which engages in the world, and is capable of respondingto both. Having no impulses from itself, and being primarily amechanism for inducing response, it can be very wrong.

    Revelation induces complete but temporary suspensionof doubt and fear. It represents the original form of

  • communication between God and His Souls, involving anextremely personal sense of closeness to Creation, which mantries to find in physical relationships. Physical closenessCANNOT achieve this. The subconscious impulses properlyinduce miracles, which are genuinely interpersonal, and resultin real closeness to others. This can be misunderstood by aPERSONALLY willful consciousness as impulses towardphysical gratification.

    Revelation unites Souls directly with God. Miracles uniteminds directly with each other. Neither emanates fromconsciousness, but both are EXPERIENCED there. This isessential, since consciousness is the state which induces action,though it does NOT inspire it. Man is free to believe what hechooses, and what he DOES attests to what he believes. Thedeeper levels of the subconscious ALWAYS contain the impulseto miracles, but man is free to fill its more superficial levels,which are closer to consciousness, with the impulses of thisworld, and to identify himself with them. This results inDENYING himself access to the miracle level underneath. In hisactions, then, his relationships also become superficial, andmiracle-inspired relating becomes impossible.

    29. Miracles are a way of EARNING release from fear.Revelation induces a state in which fear has ALREADY

    been abolished. Miracles are thus a means, and revelation is anend. Miracles do not depend on revelation; they INDUCE it.Revelation is intensely personal, and cannot actually betranslated into conscious content at all.That is why any attemptto describe it in words is usually incomprehensible. Revelationinduces ONLY experience. Miracles, on the other hand, induceACTION. Miracles are more useful now, because of theirinterpersonal nature. In this phase of learning, working miraclesis more important because freedom from fear cannot be thrustupon you.

    30. Miracles praise God through men. They praise God byhonoring His Creations, affirming their perfection. They healbecause they deny body-identification and affirm Soul-identification. By perceiving the Spirit, they adjust the levels and

  • see them in proper alignment. This places the Spirit at thecenter, where Souls can communicate directly.

    31. Miracles should inspire gratitude, not awe. Man should thankGod for what he really is.The Children of God are very holy,and the miracle honors their holiness. God’s Creations neverlose their holiness, although it can be hidden. The miracleuncovers it, and brings it into the light where it belongs.Holiness can never be really hidden in darkness, but man candeceive himself about it.This illusion makes him fearful, becausehe knows in his heart it IS an illusion, and he exerts enormousefforts to establish its reality. The miracle sets reality where itbelongs. Eternal reality belongs only to the Soul, and themiracle acknowledges only the truth. It thus dispels man’sillusions about himself, and puts him in communion withhimself AND God.

    32. Christ inspires all miracles, which are really intercessions.Theyintercede for man’s holiness, and make his perceptions holy. Byplacing him beyond the physical laws, they raise him into thesphere of celestial order. In THIS order, man IS perfect.The Soul never loses its communion with God. Only the mindNEEDS Atonement. The miracle joins in the Atonement ofChrist by placing the mind in the service of the Spirit. Thisestablishes the proper function of the mind, and corrects its errors.

    33. Miracles honor man BECAUSE he is lovable. They dispelillusions about him, and perceive the Light in him. They thusatone for his errors by freeing him from his own nightmares.They release him from a prison in which he has imprisonedHIMSELF, and by freeing his mind from illusions, they restorehis sanity. Man’s mind CAN be possessed by illusions, but hisSpirit is eternally free. If a mind perceives without love itperceives an empty shell, and is unaware of the Spirit within it.But the Atonement restores the Soul to its proper place. Themind that serves the Spirit is invulnerable.

    34. Miracles restore the mind to its fullness. By atoning for lack,they establish perfect protection.The strength of the Soul leavesno room for intrusions. The forgiven are filled with the Soul,and they forgive in return. It is the duty of the released to release

  • their brothers.The forgiven ARE the means of Atonement.Those released

    by Christ must join in releasing their brothers, for this is thePlan of the Atonement. Miracles are the way in which mindswhich serve the Spirit unite with Christ for the salvation, orrelease, of all God’s Creations.

    35. Miracles are expressions of love, but it does NOT follow that theywill always have observable effects. I am the only one who canperform miracles indiscriminately, because I AM the Atonement.You have a ROLE in the Atonement,which I will dictate TO you.Ask ME which miracles you should perform. This spares youexhaustion, because you will act under direct communication.

    36. Christ-controlled miracles are part of the Atonement, butChrist-guidance is personal.The impersonal nature of miraclesis an essential ingredient, because this enables ME to control theirdistribution. Christ-guidance leads to the highly PERSONALexperience of Revelation. This is why it involves PERSONALchoice.A guide does NOT control, but he DOES direct, leavingthe following up to you. “Lead us not into temptation” means“guide us out of our own errors.”“Take up thy cross and followme” means “recognize your errors and choose to abandon themby following my guidance.”

    Remember that error cannot really threaten truth, whichcan ALWAYS withstand it. ONLY the error is really vulnerable.You are free to establish your kingdom where you see fit, butthe right choice is inevitable if you remember this:–

    “The Soul is in a state of grace forever.Man’s reality is ONLY his Soul.Therefore man is in a state of grace forever.”

    Atonement undoes all errors in this respect, and thus uprootsthe REAL source of fear. Whenever God’s reassurances areexperienced as threat, it is ALWAYS because you are defendingmisplaced and misdirected loyalty. That is what projectionalways involves. Error is lack of love. When man projects thisonto others, he DOES imprison them, but only to the extentthat he reinforces errors they have ALREADY made.This makes

  • them vulnerable to the distortions of others, since their OWNperception of themselves is distorted. The miracle worker canONLY bless, and thus undoes their distortions, and frees themfrom prison.

    37. Miracles are examples of right thinking. Reality contact at alllevels becomes strong and accurate, thus permitting correctdelineation of intra – and interpersonal boundaries.As a result,the doer’s perceptions are aligned with truth as God created it.

    38. A miracle is a correction factor introduced into false thinkingby me. It acts as a catalyst, shaking up erroneous perception, andreorganizing it properly.This places man under the Atonementprinciple,where his perception is healed.Until this has occurred,revelation of the Divine order is impossible.

    39. The Spiritual eye is the mechanism of miracles because what Itperceives IS true. It perceives both the Creations of God and thecreations of man. Among the creations of man, It can alsoseparate the true from the false by Its ability to perceive totally,rather than selectively. It thus becomes the proper instrumentfor reality testing,which always involves the necessary distinctionbetween the false and the true.

    40. The miracle dissolves error because the Spiritual eye identifieserror as false, or unreal. This is the same as saying that byperceiving light, darkness automatically disappears.

    Darkness is lack of light, as sin is lack of love. It has nounique properties of its own. It is an example of the “scarcity”fallacy, from which ONLY error can proceed. Truth is alwaysabundant.Those who perceive and acknowledge that they haveeverything have no need for driven behavior of ANY kind.

    41. The miracle acknowledges all men as your brothers and mine. Itis a way of perceiving the universal mark of God in them.Thespecialness of God’s Sons does NOT stem from exclusion, butfrom inclusion. ALL my brothers are special. If they believe theyare deprived of anything, their perception becomes distorted.When this occurs, the whole family of God, or the Sonship, isimpaired in its relationships. Ultimately, every member of thefamily of God must return. The miracle calls him to return,because it blesses and honors him even though he may be

  • absent in spirit.“God is not mocked” is not a warning, but a reassurance on

    this point. God WOULD be mocked if any of His Creationslacked holiness. The Creation IS whole, and the mark ofwholeness is holiness.

    42. Wholeness is the perceptual content of miracles. It thus corrects,or atones for, the faulty perception of lack anywhere.

    Here we begin to make the fundamental distinctionbetween miracles and projection.The stimulus MUST precedethe response, and will also determine the kind of response that isevoked. Behavior IS response, so that the question “response towhat?” becomes crucial. Since stimuli are identified throughperception, you first perceive the stimulus and then behaveaccordingly. It follows, then, that:

    “As ye perceive,So shall ye behave.”

    The Golden Rule asks you to behave toward others as youwould have them behave toward you. This means that theperception of BOTH must be accurate.The Golden Rule is therule for appropriate behavior.You cannot behave appropriatelyunless you perceive accurately, because appropriate behaviorDEPENDS on lack of level confusion. The presence of levelconfusion ALWAYS results in variable reality testing, and thereforein variability in behavioral appropriateness. Since you and yourneighbor are equal members of the same family, as you perceiveboth, so you will behave toward both. The way to perceive forGolden Rule behavior is to look out from the perception of yourOWN holiness, and perceive the holiness of others.

    The emptiness engendered by fear should be replaced bylove, because love and its absence are in the same dimension, andcorrection cannot be undertaken except WITHIN a dimension.Otherwise, there has been a confusion of levels. Death is ahuman affirmation of a belief in “fate,” or level confusion.That iswhy the Bible says,“There IS no death,” and why I demonstratedthat death does not exist. I came to fulfill the law byREINTERPRETING it. The law itself, if properly understood,

  • offers only protection to man. It is those who have not yet“changed their minds” who entered the “hellfire” conceptinto it.

    I assure you that I will witness for anyone who lets me, andto whatever extent he permits it. YOUR witnessing demonstratesYOUR belief, and thus strengthens it.Those who witness for meare expressing, through their miracles, that they have abandonedthe belief in deprivation in favor of the abundance they havelearned BELONGS to them.

    43. A MAJOR contribution of miracles is their strength in releasingman from his misplaced sense of isolation, deprivation and lack.

    Miracles are affirmations of Sonship, which is a state ofcompletion and abundance.Whatever is true and real is eternal,and CANNOT change or BE changed. The Soul is thereforeunalterable because it is ALREADY perfect, but the mind canelect the level it chooses to serve.The ONLY limit which is puton its choice is that it CANNOT serve two masters.

    The mind, if it elects to do so, becomes a medium bywhich the Soul creates along the line of its own Creation. If itdoes not freely elect to do so, it retains its creative POTENTIAL,but places itself under tyrannous rather than genuinelyauthoritative control. As a result it imprisons, because such arethe dictates of tyrants.To change your mind means to place it atthe disposal of TRUE Authority.

    The miracle is thus a sign that the mind has chosen to be ledby Christ in His service.The abundance of Christ is the naturalresult of choosing to follow Him. ALL shallow roots must beuprooted, because they are not deep enough to sustain you.Theillusion that shallow roots can be DEEPENED, and thus made tohold, is one of the distortions on which the REVERSAL of theGolden Rule rests.As these false underpinnings are given up, theequilibrium is temporarily experienced as unstable.However, thefact is that NOTHING is less stable than an orientation that isupside down. Nor can anything which holds it that way be reallyconducive to greater stability.

    44. Miracles arise from a miraculous state of mind. By beingone, this state of mind goes out to ANYONE, even without

  • the awareness of the miracle worker himself. The impersonalnature of miracles is because the Atonement itself is one, unitingall creations with their Creator.

    45. The miracle is an expression of an inner awareness of Christ,and the acceptance of His Atonement. The mind is then in astate of grace, and naturally becomes gracious, both to the Hostwithin and the stranger without. By bringing in the stranger, hebecomes your brother.

    46. A miracle is never lost. It touches many people you do not evenknow, and sometimes produces undreamed of changes in forcesof which you are not even aware.That is not your concern.Themiracle will always bless YOU.

    The miracles you are NOT asked to perform have not losttheir value.They are still expressions of your own state of grace,but the ACTION aspect of the miracle should be Christ-controlled because of His complete awareness of the WholePlan. The impersonal nature of miracle-mindedness ensuresYOUR grace, but only Christ is in a position to know wheregrace can be BESTOWED.

    47. Miracle-mindedness means miracle-readiness. Readiness meansthat you should always keep your perceptions straight, so thatyou will ALWAYS be ready, willing and able. These are theessentials for “listen, learn and do.” You must be READY tolisten, WILLING to learn, and ABLE to do. Only the last isinvoluntary, because it is the APPLICATION of miracles whichmust be Christ-controlled. The other two, which are theVOLUNTARY aspects of miracle-mindedness, ARE up to you.

    48. Awe is an inappropriate response to miracles. Revelation isliterally unspeakable because it is an experience of unspeakablelove. Awe should be reserved for revelation, to which it isperfectly and correctly applicable. It is NOT appropriate formiracles because a state of awe is worshipful. It implies that oneof a lesser order stands before a greater one. This is the caseONLY when a Soul stands before its Creator. Souls are perfectcreations, and experience awe only in the Presence of theCreator of perfection.

    The miracle, on the other hand, is a sign of love among

  • equals. Equals cannot be in awe of one another because aweimplies inequality. It is therefore an inappropriate reaction tome. An elder brother is entitled to respect for his greaterexperience, and a reasonable amount of obedience for hisgreater wisdom. He is also entitled to love because he IS abrother, and also to devotion if he is devoted. It is only mydevotion that entitles me to yours.There is nothing about methat YOU cannot attain. I have nothing that does not come fromGod. The main difference between us as yet is that I haveNOTHING ELSE. This leaves me in a state of true holiness,which is only a POTENTIAL in you.

    “No man cometh unto the Father but by me” is among themost misunderstood statements in the Bible. It does NOT meanthat I am in any way separate or different from you EXCEPT INTIME, which does not really exist at all.Actually, the quotationis more meaningful if it is considered on a vertical rather than ahorizontal axis. Regarded along the vertical, man stands belowme and I stand below God. In the process of “rising up,” I AMhigher.This is because, without me, the distance between Godand man would be too great for you to encompass.

    I bridge the distance as an elder brother to man on the onehand, and as a Son of God on the other. My devotion to mybrothers has placed me in charge of the Sonship, which I canrender complete only to the extent to which I can SHARE it.This may appear to contradict the statement “I and my Fatherare one,” but there are still separate parts in the statement, inrecognition that the Father is greater. (The original statementwas “are of one kind”). The Holy Spirit is the Bringer ofRevelations. Revelations are INDIRECTLY inspired by me,because I am close to the Holy Spirit, and alert to therevelation-readiness of my brothers. I can thus BRING down tothem more than they can DRAW down to themselves.

    49. The Holy Spirit is the Highest Communication Medium.Miracles do not involve this type of communication becausethey are TEMPORARY communication devices. When manreturns to his original form of communication with God, theneed for miracles is over. The Holy Spirit mediates higher to

  • lower communication, keeping the direct channel from God toman open for revelation.Revelation is not reciprocal. It is alwaysFROM God TO man. The miracle IS reciprocal because itinvolves equality.

    50. The miracle is a learning device which lessens the need fortime. In the longitudinal or horizontal plane, the recognition ofthe true equality of all the members of the Sonship appears toinvolve almost endless time. However, the sudden shifts fromhorizontal to vertical perception which the miracle entailsintroduces an interval from which the doer and the receiverBOTH emerge much farther along in time than they wouldotherwise have been.

    The miracle thus has the unique property of shorteningtime by rendering the space of time it occupies unnecessary.There is NO relationship between the time a miracle TAKESand the time it COVERS. It substitutes for learning that mighthave taken thousands of years. It does this by the underlyingrecognition of perfect equality and holiness between the doerand the receiver on which the miracle rests.

    We said before that the miracle abolishes time. It does thisby a process of COLLAPSING it, and thus abolishing certainINTERVALS within it. It does this, however, WITHIN the largertemporal sequence. It establishes an out-of-pattern time intervalwhich is NOT under the usual laws of time. Only in this sense isit timeless. By collapsing time it literally saves time, much asdaylight saving time does. It rearranges the distribution of light.

    51. The miracle is the only device which man has at his immediatedisposal for controlling time. Only revelation TRANSCENDStime, having nothing to do with time at all.

    The miracle is much like the body, in that both arelearning aids which aim at facilitating a state in which theyare unnecessary. When the Soul’s original state of directcommunication is reached, neither the body nor the miracleserves any purpose.While he believes he is in a body, however,man can choose between loveless and miraculous channels ofexpression. He can make an empty shell, but he CANNOTexpress nothing at all. He can wait, delay, paralyze himself,

  • reduce his creativity to almost nothing, and even introduce adevelopmental arrest or even a regression. But he CANNOTabolish his creativity. He can destroy his medium ofcommunication, but NOT his potential.

    Man was NOT created by his own free will alone.Only whatHE creates is his to decide. The basic decision of the miracle-minded is not to wait on time any longer than is necessary.Timecan waste as well as be wasted. The miracle-worker, therefore,accepts the time-control factor gladly, because he recognizes thatevery collapse of time brings all men closer to the ultimateRELEASE from time, in which the Son and the Father ARE one.

    Equality does not imply homogeneity NOW. Wheneveryone recognizes that he has everything, individualcontributions to the Sonship will no longer be necessary.Whenthe Atonement has been completed, ALL talents will be sharedby ALL the Sons of God. God is NOT partial. All His childrenhave His total Love, and ALL his gifts are freely given toeveryone alike.“Except ye become as little children” means that,unless you fully recognize your complete dependence on God,you cannot know the real power of the Son in his truerelationship with the Father.

    You who want peace can find it only by completeforgiveness.You never really WANTED peace before, so therewas no point in being told how to achieve it. No learning isacquired by anyone unless he wants to learn it, and believes insome way that he NEEDS it.While the concept of lack does notexist in the Creation of God, it is VERY apparent in thecreations of man. It is, in fact, the essential difference. A needimplies lack by definition. It involves the recognition that youwould be better off in a state which is somehow different fromthe one you are in.

    Until the “separation,” which is a better term than the“fall,” nothing was lacking.This meant that man had no needs atall. If he had not deprived himself, he would never haveexperienced them.After the separation, needs became the mostpowerful source of motivation for human action.All behavior isessentially motivated by needs, but behavior itself is not a Divine

  • attribute. The body is the mechanism for behavior. The beliefthat he COULD be better off is the reason why man has thismechanism at his disposal.

    Each one acts according to the particular hierarchy ofneeds he establishes for himself. His hierarchy, in turn, dependson his perception of what he IS; that is, what he LACKS.A senseof separation from God is the ONLY lack he really needs tocorrect.This sense of separation would never have occurred ifhe had not distorted his perception of truth, and thus perceivedHIMSELF as lacking. The concept of ANY sort of needhierarchy arose because, having made this fundamental error, hehad already fragmented himself into levels with different needs.As he integrates HE becomes one, and his needs becomeone accordingly.

    Unified need produces unified action because it produces alack of ambivalence.The concept of a need hierarchy, a corollaryto the original error that man can be separated from God,requires correction at its own level, before the error of perceivinglevels at all can be corrected. Man cannot behave effectivelywhile he operates at split levels. However, while he does,correction must be introduced from the bottom UP. This isbecause he now operates in space, where concepts such as “up”and “down” are meaningful. Ultimately, space is as meaningless astime.The concept is really one of space-time BELIEF.

    The physical world exists only because man can use it tocorrect his UNBELIEF, which placed him in it originally. Hecan never control the effects of fear himself because he MADEfear, and believes in what he made. In attitude, then, thoughNOT in content, he resembles his own Creator,Who has perfectfaith in His creations BECAUSE He created them. Belief in acreation produces its existence.That is why a man can believe inwhat no-one else thinks is true. It is true for him because it wasmade BY him.

    Every aspect of fear proceeds from upside-down perception.The more truly creative devote their efforts to correctingperceptual distortions.The neurotic devotes his to compromise.The psychotic tries to escape by establishing the certain truth of

  • his own errors. It is most difficult to free him by ordinarymeans, because he is more consistent in his own denial of truth.The miracle, however, makes no such distinctions. It correctserrors BECAUSE they are errors. Thus, the next point toremember about miracles is:

    52. The miracle makes NO distinction among degrees ofmisperception. It is a device for perception-correction, effectivequite apart from either the degree or the direction of the error.This is its TRUE indiscriminateness.

    Christ-controlled miracles are selective ONLY in the sensethat they are directed towards those who can use them forTHEMSELVES. Since this makes it inevitable that they willextend them to others, a strong chain of Atonement is welded.However, Christ-control takes no account at all of the magnitudeof the miracle itself, because the concept of size exists in a planethat is itself unreal. Since the miracle aims at RESTORING theawareness of reality it would hardly be useful if it were bound bythe laws which govern the error it aims to correct. Only manmakes this kind of mistake. It is an example of the foolishconsistency which his own false beliefs have engendered.

    The power and strength of man’s creative will must beunderstood before the real meaning of denial can be appreciatedand relinquished. It is NOT mere negation. It is a positivemiscreation.While the miscreation is NECESSARILY believed inby its maker, it does not exist at all at the level of true creation.

    53. The miracle compares what man has made with the higher levelcreation, accepting what is in ACCORD as true and rejecting thediscordant as false. All aspects of fear are untrue because they DONOT exist at the higher creative levels, and therefore do not existat all.To whatever extent a man is willing to submit his beliefs tothis test, to that extent are his perceptions corrected.

    In sorting out the false from the true, the miracle proceedsalong the following lines;

    “If perfect love casts out fear,And if fear exists,Then there is NOT perfect love.”

    DISTORTIONS OF MIRACLE IMPULSESYou are involved in unconscious distortions which are producing adense cover over miracle impulses, and which make it hard for themto reach consciousness.The nature of any interpersonal relationshipis limited or defined by what you want it to DO. Relating is a way ofachieving an outcome.The danger of defenses lies in their propensityfor holding misperceptions rigidly in place. All actions which stemfrom reverse thinking are literally the behavioral expressions of thosewho know not what they do. A rigid orientation can be extremelyreliable, even if it is upside-down. In fact, the more consistentlyupside-down it is, the MORE reliable it is.

    However, validity is still the ultimate goal, which reliability canonly serve. Hostility, triumph, vengeance, self-debasement, and allkinds of expressions of lack of love are often very clearly seen in thefantasies which accompany them. But it is a PROFOUND error toimagine that because these fantasies are so frequent, or occur soreliably, that this implies validity. Remember that while validityimplies reliability, the relationship is NOT reversible. You can bewholly reliable and ENTIRELY wrong.While a reliable instrumentDOES measure something, what USE is it unless you discover whatthe “something” is? This course, then, will concentrate on validity,and let reliability fall naturally into place.

    The confusion of miracle impulses with physical impulses is amajor source of perceptual distortion because it INDUCES, ratherthan straightens out, the basic level confusion which underlies theperception of all those who seek happiness with the instruments ofthis world. Inappropriate physical impulses (or misdirected miracleimpulses) result in conscious guilt if expressed and depression ifdenied. ALL real pleasure comes from doing God’s Will. This is

  • because NOT doing It is a denial of self. DENIAL of error results inprojection. CORRECTION of error brings release.“Lead us not intotemptation” means “do not let us deceive ourselves into believingthat we can relate in peace to God or to our brothers withANYTHING external.”

    Child of God, you were created to create the good, thebeautiful, and the holy. Do not lose sight of this.The love of God, fora little while, must still be expressed through one body to anotherbecause the real vision is still so dim. Everyone can use his body bestby enlarging man’s perception so he can see the REAL vision. THISvision is invisible to the physical eye. The ultimate purpose of thebody is to render itself unnecessary. Learning to do this is the onlyreal reason for its creation.

    Fantasies of any kind are distorted forms of thinking becausethey ALWAYS involve twisting perception into unreality. Fantasy is adebased form of vision.Vision and revelation are closely related, whilefantasy and projection are more closely associated because bothattempt to control external reality according to false internal needs.Twist reality in ANY way, and you are perceiving destructively.Reality was lost through usurpation, which in turn produced tyranny.I told you that you are now restored to your former role in the planof Atonement, but you must still choose freely to devote yourselves tothe greater restoration. As long as a single slave remains to walk theearth, your release is not complete. COMPLETE restoration of theSonship is the only true goal of the miracle-minded.

    NO fantasies are true. They are distortions of perception, bydefinition. They are a means of making false associations, andobtaining pleasure from them. Man can do this only because he IScreative. But although he can perceive false associations, he can nevermake them real EXCEPT TO HIMSELF. Man believes in what hecreates. If he creates miracles, he will be equally strong in his belief inTHEM. The strength of HIS conviction will then sustain the beliefof the miracle receiver. And fantasies become totally unnecessary asthe wholly satisfying nature of reality becomes apparent to both.

    The Illusion of Separation

    This section deals with a fundamental misuse of knowledge, referredto in the Bible as the cause of the “fall,” or separation.There are somedefinitions which I asked you to take from the dictionary which willbe helpful here.They are somewhat unusual, since they are not thefirst definitions which are given. Nevertheless, the fact that each ofthem does appear in the dictionary should be reassuring.

    Project (verb): to extend forward or out.Project (noun): a plan in the mind.World: a natural grand division.

    We will refer later to projection as related to both mental healthand mental illness.We have already observed that man can create anempty shell, but he cannot create nothing at all. This emptinessprovides the screen for the misuse of projection.

    The Garden of Eden, which is described as a literal garden inthe Bible, was not an actual garden at all. It was merely a mental stateof complete need-lack. Even in the literal account, it is noteworthythat the pre-separation state was essentially one in which manneeded nothing. The “tree of knowledge” is also an overly literalfigure.Th
