Graham Vincent

53 years ago a revolution orchestrated by the now legendary Che Guevara and Fidel Castro led a new communistCuba down the path of isolation, the prevailing symptom of which is the US blockade of the country.

The blockade, rejected by the United Nations for the past 20 years, deprives many young Cubans the opportunity toequip themselves for sport. The Olympics for them must look as distant a conception as democracy does for Cuba.

But dreams can come true. Donations from the concert at Bolivar Hall, featuring Cuban and Spanish musicians, willbe presented during the Rock Around the Blockade solidarity brigade trip to Cuba in February.

Young Cubans are looking for inspiration from several medal prospects ahead of this summers’ games. MijainLopez, Cuba’s top male athlete of 2010, is reigning Olympic champion and four times world champion in wrestling, and Dayron Robles won Olympic gold in 2008 in the 110m hurdles.

Countryman Ahmed Dickinson plays guitar at the musical celebration, alongsidepianists Eralys Fernandez and Neus Guiu, and violinists Paula Martinez and Emma Blanco.

Not only a worthy cause, the classical concert will be an opportunity to get acquainted to some outstandingmusicians.

The event is being organised by Rock Around the Blockade, a British campaign in solidarity with socialist Cubaagainst the US blockade, and marks the year of the London Olympics.

Time: 6.45pm of Friday 20 January. Tickets £10 (buy online: http://ratb.org.uk/events/london/200-concert).Place: Bolivar Hall, 54 Grafton Way, London, W1T 5DL, Nearest tube: Warren Street
