80 MAPS OF NORTHAMPTO:\i SHIRE

Chauncey Esqr Simon Adams Esqr Francis Beynon Esqr Before whom this Map was then laid, for their Observation and Correction, (previous to its Publication) By the late Sir Thomas Cave Bart At whose request, those Gentlemen made such Alterations, Additions and Improvements in their respective Hundreds as were found necessary, and communicated them to the Publisher the Year following. London: Published as the Act directs, August 2d 1779, by William Faden, (Successor to the late T. Jefferys) Corner of St Martin's Lane, Charing Cross. Scale of Statute Miles,S (= 4i ins.). Four sheets, each 241 x 24 inches. /255

The first map of the county on a large scale. It shows hundreds, towns, villages, hamlets, churches, gentlemen's seats (with the owner's names), parks, forests, water and wind mills, hills, tumuli, rivers, brooks, crosses, main and secondary roads, turnpikes, toll gates, dykes, and the Peterborough Grand Fen.

Top, left, a view of the Queen's Cross; left centre, a short table of "Explanation," and the scale. Lower right, the dedicatory title and imprint.

The border-is formed by a thick line and a thin line with a double inner line marked off into degrees and minutes of latitude and longitude. This latter is based on the meridian of Greenwich and is accurate.

It was reprinted in 1780 and 1791.

The map of Northamptonshire seems unchanged from the issue of 1767. John Bowles's name has beeh removed from the imprint of some of the other maps in this edition of the Atlas, and the space left blank. John Bowles died in 1779, so allowing for time to use up old tacks of maps, I assum~ the date of 1780 for this edition.

I should have expected the correct map for this edition of the atlas to bear the imprint of Robert Wilkinson, Robert Sayer and Carington Bowles but have not yet found it in that state. The map of Northamptonshire in the British Museum copy of the atlas is still unchanged from 1767.

84 ivIAPS OF NORTHAMPTON SHIRE

Bottom right, the title is in a shaded lozenge placed across a finely engraved star indicator of the points of the compass with an elongated northern point crowned with a fleur-de-lis, and Cary's name at the southern point. Below this is the scale.

The border is formed by a thick and a thin line with a double inner line marked off into degrees and minutes of latitude and longitude. The latter, being taken from Eyre's map, is correct. Below the bottom border, the imprint and date. The back is plain.

Cary introduced a new high standard of draughtsmanship and engraving, which, coupled with improved cartographical material (due to the numerous recent large-scale surveys of the counties) being available, made this atlas a great advance on any previous work of its kind.

The firm of Cary re-issued this atlas a number of times with the maps and title-page dated 1787, a number of times dated 1793, in 1809, 1812, 1818, 1821, 1823, 1825, 1826, 1827, 1831 and probably at other dates as well. Their successor, G. F. Cruchley, published further editions, brought up-to-date as regards parliamentary representation and by the addition of railways, in 1863, 1868, 1872 and 1875.

267. Cary, J. A reprint of No. 266.

In CARY'S NEW AND CORRECT ENGLISH ATLAS ... 1787. 4to. 266/268

Although the date on the title-page of the atlas and at the foot of each map was kept unchanged at Sept. 1st, 1787, many of the maps were revis~d between that date and 1793. The map of Northamptonshire, in the earliest copy I have found so far, shows a number of roads reduced from turnpike to secondary status. These include the roads from Northampton to Banbury, Northampton to Towcester, and a section of Watling Street from the eighth milestone beyond Towcester to the eighteenth. The mileage numbers on this latter stretch, nine to twenty inclusive, have been removed. The road from Daventry to Newbold has been raised to turnpike status.

268. Cary, J. A further reprint of No. 266.

In CARY'S NEW AND CORRECT ENGLISH ATLAS ... 1787. 4to. 267/269

The road from Northampton to Flower has been raised to turnpike status.

In this edition of the atlas, only the title-page and the map of Durham bear the date 1793, the remainder of the maps still bear the date 1787. Thirteen of the maps however have had the imprints reengrav d in a shorter form. That of Northamptonshire now reads

Gimson, of Markfield near Leicester, possesses a copy of the 1795 edition of this work and most of its maps show plate numbers in the tqp right-hand corners of each map, but at a considerable distance from the map proper. I suppose that they were usually cropped off and lost, in the binding of the work. The number on the map of Northamptonshire is "16."
