A NOTE TO THE READER

German and Italian antiquarian booksellers and auctioneers are veryfond of using abbreviations in their catalogs, sometimes on a ratherlavish scale. This enables them to convey a large amount ofinformation in a relatively short space, but readers not completelyfluent in those languages are likely to be left somewhat bewildered, even discouraged, by strings of vowels and consonants occurringeither singly or in unfamiliar combinations in the midst of what wouldotherwise be a fairly comprehensible text.

For them, this little dictionary, the first one of its kind, I think, maycome in handy. Each abbreviation is followed by the full resolutionof the German and Italian word and by its English translation, in mostcases with one or more examples iUustrating the context and thecombinations in which the abbreviation is most likely to occur.Sometimes abbreviations listed among the examples are also givenas main entries, a redundancy that readers might appreciate.

Abbreviations for reference works are not included.

This little dictionary should not be construed as an attempt tostandardize the often colorful, imaginative and idiosyncratic world ofbooksellers' abbreviations. A moderate amount of chaos is essentialto our trade — may it continue to be so despite this attempt to makeit a little more comprehensible.

I am very pleased that the ILAB has agreed to act as publisher anddistributor.

Part I: GERMAN ABBREVIATIONS

German abbreviations are generally the same regardless of singularor plural, gender and case ending: kl. (klein = small) can mean klein, kleine, kleiner, kleines, kleinem etc.Nouns and adjectives and their corresponding abbreviations canoften be added at the end of a word. In such cases, the main entryabbreviation may be repeated with a hyphen, as in Abb., -abb., whichstands for the noun Abbildung (illustration), or the same noun usedas a suffix -abb., as in Textabbildung (text illustration). This has notbeen done with strict consistency, but I have tried to include all suchcombinations in the examples.
