Welcome to our latest edition of the Stickney News. With the cooler days and darker nights you will have more time to read it! If you are putting on an event, or know of an event taking place anywhere in the village, that people might be interested in attending, don't forget to let us know so we can advertise it in this magazine. We are still hoping for some new ideas for the Stickney Show so if you think “Oh, it would be great if we had ‘such and such’ at the show do let us know so we can try to incorporate it. We would also like some ‘new blood’ on the committee, if you can spare a couple of hours every month.Welcome to any new comers to the village. We hope you soon settle in and find things to interest you and places or events where you can make new friends. You will find lots of information in the mag and important telephone numbers are on the back page.

WHAT IS THE GUNPOWDER PLOT?

Guy (Guido) Fawkes led the Gunpowder plot in 1605. It was a plan to blow up King James I and his government. Fawkes, and his group, put 36 barrels of gunpowder in cellars under the Houses of Parliament in London, ready to set off a massive explosion. One member of the group sent a letter to his friend who worked in Parliament, warning him to stay away on November 5.The King's supporters got hold of the letter and the plot was rumbled!Guards broke into the cellars where the gunpowder plotters were waiting. They were arrested, tortured and executed. The Gunpowder Plot was about religion. England was a Protestant country, and the plotters were Catholic. The group

wanted to return England to the Catholic faith. They thought they could do this by killing King James I and his ministers.

ST LUKE’S CHURCHHARVEST SUPPERS have been enjoyed in Stickney, Stickford and New Leake, each having its own followers coming together to share the evening banter and say thank you to those who had prepared and presented the food.  Then came the fun of the auctions, demonstrating generosity in giving and bidding.  In Stickney the event raised £320.30 for our church funds, and eight bags of tins and packet foods are ready to be taken to Centrepoint Outreach in Boston.  We thank the Primary School for all their contributions and for sharing their Harvest Celebration in St Luke's. Contributions to the VICTORIAN WINDOW repairs are trickling in.  Three bring and buy stalls, a small competition and donations have raised over £200 so far towards our target. If you can add to the fund, however small an amount, it will be appreciated. Our CHRISTMAS BINGO is fast approaching, booked for SATURDAY 26 NOVEMBER at 7.30pm in Stickney Youth Centre. All donations of prizes are very welcome and enable us to raise more for funds:  please pass them to Bev Gosling,Doreen Cooley or Angela Brady, together with any small items suitable for the tombola.NOVEMBER is a special month for REMEMBERING.  On Saturday 05 the Gunpowder Plot, then FRIDAY 11, at 10.45am we meet around Stickney War Memorial to pay tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives in times of conflict.  On SUNDAY 06 NOVEMBER at 5.00pm in St Luke's the names of our own loved ones will be read out and candles lit during our annual Memorial Service.  Names can be added to the list at the back of Church and everyone is welcome to share in the time of reflecting. St Luke's Church will be hosting the PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 November.  Times and details will be announced. A Songs of Praise will round up this event at 6.00pm on the Sunday, and we hope many of you will come to appraise the entries and the resulting 2017 calendar.Eight of us joined together one afternoon in Church for tea, cakes and GRAVE TALK.  It was very interesting to share some of the plans we have made for our own funerals, and a few ideas for our bucket lists.  Our lively discussion was a response to set questions.  More Grave Talk will happen in the future, it would be good to have several small groups for these shared conversations.SUNDAY 27 NOVEMBER will be the first Sunday of Advent.  Material will be available shortly for Advent group discussion or individual study.  If you would like to find out more please contact Rev Fran on 01205 481183.

Stickney Jubilee Committee www.facebook.com/StickneyShow

The Parish Council Jubilee Committee held an open meeting on Thursday 29 September 2016. Two members of the public were present, this gave the Committee members a chance to thank them for the work they did at the Show in 2016 and they have kindly volunteered to do the same again in 2017. If anyone else would like to be put on a list of volunteers to help at Stickney Show 2017 please contact the Chairman of the Committee, Harry Dodds on 480463, or email the Parish Council on [email protected]. Volunteers for the Show are not expected to attend Committee meetings.

If any members of the Public have any ideas of what they would like to see at Stickney Show then please let the Committee know using the above contact details.

Six donations of £150.00 each will be donated to local groups, a presentation evening will be arranged when the cheques will be presented to the Primary School, William Lovell Academy, Patients Support Group, Fen Bank Greyhound Sanctuary, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and St Luke’s Church Window Appeal.

There will be just three fund raising events for Stickney Show in 2017, these will be a Pig Racing Evening, an Easter Bingo and a Horse Race Night, look out for the dates in the village notice boards and in the Stickney News.

Support from Parishioners is important to the Committee members, just attending the fund raising events helps towards the success of the Stickney Show. In turn the Committee can then share the success of the Show by giving some of the profit back to Community Groups and those organisations who attend the Show at no cost.Raffle ticket sales enabled the Committee to give donations to the Primary School for the use of the tables at the Show, the William Lovell Academy for the use of the field, the electricity, water etc (nothing seemed too much trouble!), the Horncastle Ukulele Band who entertained all day and to Ferret Rescue who did not charge for attending the Show.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

The British Legion was founded in 1921 as a voice for the ex-service community, as a merger of four organisations: the Comrades of the Great War, the National Association of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers, the National Federation of Discharged and Demobilized Sailors and Soldiers and the Officers' Association.

It was granted a Royal Charter on 29 May 1971 to mark its fiftieth anniversary which gives the Legion the privilege of the prefix 'Royal'.

Earl Haig, British commander at the Battle of the Somme and Passchendaele was one of the founders of the Legion and the President until his death.

Perhaps best known for the yearly Poppy Appeal and Remembrance services, the Legion is a campaigning organisation that promotes the welfare and interests of current and former members of the British Armed Forces. The Legion support nearly 36,000 War Disablement Pension cases for war veterans and make around 300,000 welfare and friendship visits every year.

Legion campaigns include calls for more research into: Gulf War syndrome and compensation for its victims; upgrading of War Pensions; the extension of endowment mortgage compensation for British military personnel serving overseas and better support for British military personnel resettling into civilian life.

Gardening Tips for NovemberLate autumn marks the transition between the end of one growing season and the start of the next.  There is a real urgency about getting the last crops in before the weather deteriorates in earnest until only the last apples remain on the trees to finish ripening for store.  By the end of November hardy vegetables for use during winter or next spring will have the kitchen garden to themselves.

Here then are a few easy jobs we could be thinking about as we contemplate the coming hiatus in our gardening labour.

1]  Ensure brassicas are netted against hungry pigeons, cabbage white caterpillar damage is no longer a threat, so fleece is not necessary now.

2]  Empty and use contents of compost bins, using only well-rotted dark crumbly material, which should bear no resemblance to the material you put in.

3]  Carrots which you grew for overwintering will benefit if you remove the foliage and cover with a layer of straw as insulation.

4]  Cover rhubarb crowns with a mulch of manure.  Then come early spring they can be covered with either a purpose made 'forcer' or an old dustbin or tall coal scuttle to exclude light.  This will ensure some early rhubarb.

5]  You can still sow broad beans either under glass in boxes to be planted out next year, or if you have a warm sheltered bed, you could try sowing a dwarf variety now.

6]  For an early harvest next spring, sow a fast maturing carrot variety under glass, in a soil border or a growing bag cleared of its summer crops.

7]  At the same time sow a hardy cos or greenhouse lettuce in pots and next month transplant the seedlings between the rows of carrots.

In conclusion a quote from Rose G. Kingsley:

“In the garden, Autumn is, indeed the crowning glory of the year.”

Happy gardening.

MEETING HELD ON THURSDAY 06 OCTOBER 2016

There were four members of the public present. Concerns regarding the amended planning applications from American Caravans were expressed, these will be considered when the item is discussed.

Apologies were accepted from Cllr Spring and Dist Cllr Jones

Present: Cllrs Spring, Dodds, Cooper, Wood, Perham and Bolland (Chairman)

Also Present: County Cllr Ayling and Dist Cllr Ashton

Reports From Representatives On Outside BodiesCounty Cllr Ayling reported: A meeting has been held at Stickford House regarding the picnic site, this will be discussed as an agenda item. Due to boundary changes in Lincolnshire, Stickney will be in the Wainfleet Ward for County elections.

Dist Cllr Ashton reported: Footway lighting is being converted to LCD and will not be charged to parishes. The green waste collection charge has been fixed for four years.

Cllr Dodds reported: Jubilee Committee Report: There was a disappointing turnout of members of the public at the meeting held on 29 September where residents were invited to attend and give ideas to the Committee for fund raising or for the Stickney Show 2017.Christmas Tree Information: Cllr Dodds reported various prices, sites and types of trees and lights available. There are four options to be considered at the next meeting.

Cllr Edwards reported: She was unable to attend the West Fen Parish Meeting, but had received the following information: Solar Century will carry out some maintenance to Folly Lane up to the entrance to the Solar Farm. The grant available from Solar Century is £9,527.00 for Stickney, West Fen and Carrington. It was suggested that all three areas should join forces and have a defibrillator at various sites across the area. West Fen would like a village sign/nameplate.

To Receive Declarations of Interest in Accordance with the Localism Act 2011Cllr Cooper declared an interest in item 13 on the agenda, and signed the book accordingly.

Audit for the Year Ended 31 March 2016The audit has been returned and, other than an incorrect date entered on the form, the external auditor has approved the audit. The Notice of Conclusion of Audit was placed in the notice boards as required.

Picnic SiteThe Clerk outlined figures sent to the Council by LCC covering various options. LCC would favour the removal of the toilet block, at its own expense, and capping off the services for use in the future. Items for the Parish Council to consider the costs of:Insurance costs – no additional costs due to being included in the Parish Council land/assets.Rates – thought to be no cost, but checks being made with Valuation Office. Bin emptying – request for bins to be supplied and emptied have been sent to ELDC. Electricity and water supply – a standing charge will apply. Grass cutting – quotations will have to be sought.Fly tipping removal. A public meeting will be held when all the above information is in place

Burial of Bones found at The HolliesThe Bones of a lady found at land at The Holies have been buried in the cemetery. The cost of the grave digger is £200.00 and the cost of a headstone will be £300.00. The Parish Council have agreed to pay for this using money reserved to purchase land for a cemetery.

Page 17: parishes.lincolnshire.gov.ukparishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Files/Parish/128/...  · Web viewWe thank the Primary School for all their contributions and for sharing their Harvest

Planning Applications Received The following plans were looked at and OBJECTIONS were made by the Parish Council:S/169/01602/16 (amendment) - American Caravans Direct - Erection of 1 bungalow and construction of vehicular access at Land adjacent to Station Business Park, Main Road.S/169/01601/16 (amendment) - American Caravans Direct - Erection of a building comprising of workshop, stores, sales office, reception, staff room and wc’s and construction of a vehicular access at Land adjacent to Station Business Park, Main Road. These applications are the same as the previous ones submitted using the same references, therefore the objections for both of the applications remain: The land is green field land, as it was for a previous application, which was refused, and instructions to remove chalk from the site have been ignored. It is stated on the form that there are no trees or hedges at the site, this is not true – there are three ancient hedges and some trees. The entrance to the site showing lorries is dangerous, just off the A16, the waiting area should be within the site and well away from the A16. The noise will be a disturbance to residents in adjacent properties when the lorries arrive out of normal working hours. The proposed new entrance is in the 60mph limit on the busy, and narrow (24’8”) at this point, A16. Following a house fire at the north end of the village concerns have to be raised regarding the water pressure for the emergency services. With the above concerns it is clear that this is definitely not a site for a residential property.Has the situation regarding sewerage disposal been resolved? There is a new line drawn on the plans, but no documentation from Anglian Water. Has the situation regarding trade waste and effluent been resolved? The form still indicates there will be none. This site is prone to flooding, where will the surface water go if the land is developed? Caravans are being sited for sale on the road side of the boundary fencing at this site. There are great crested newts in this area.

Planning DecisionsFULL planning permission has been received for:S/120/01240/16 - A R Craven - Erection of a free range poultry unit at Land at Poplars Farm, Midville Lane

RepairsThe road surface at Holmes Road is in a poor state of repair.ANY POT HOLES OR STREET LIGHTS IN ALL DAY OR OUT AT NIGHT CAN BE REPORTED TO THE PARISH COUNCIL CLERK AT ANY TIME. Alternatively it can be done direct via the LCC website where repairs are shown on a map so may have already been reported. It is tedious to register but if you let the site remember your details it is easy (use a very obscure password as you will not need to remember it!) after that you can report any highway issue direct.

The next Parish Council Meeting will be held on Thursday 03 November 2016 in the Youth Centre at 7.30pm. There will be a public forum from 7.15pm.
