TRANSCRIPT
• Need to train over 1000 incoming contractors to understand the Human Performance mission, what Human Performance Tools are, and how to use them.
• 50% of the incoming contracted workforce have never been in a power plant, much more a nuclear power plant.
• Management was giving us 1-2 hours for each session.
• I was not going to be the only one teaching this training module.
• Less than $1000 budget… (like way less)
The SituationThe Situation
It’s a little out there, but I really liked how the
Managing Distractions training went. I trust you, what do you need from
me?”R.Smith

• What Human Performance Tools can we have the students experience during the training?
• How do we include everyone and make them feel valued while keeping them engaged?
• How can we do this in as few meetings as possible?
• How can we maintain a training atmosphere of professionalism?
• How many people do we need to support this and who will they be?
• What resources do we have and what do we need?
• What will we do if we don’t get enough performance department support? A film festival is nothing without film to judge.

will put the corresponding video numbers for your
selections.
These are the voting categories:
1. Best Overall: Clearly the best choice
2. Most Informative: I learned something
3. Most entertaining: I was engaged with interest

Conduct a Human
Performance Film Festival DLA
PRE-JOB BRIEFING:• Ensure ALL personnel involved are in attendance
• Eliminate distractions
The doors are shut – we should keep side
conversations to a minimum, unless they are relevant to
discuss the video clip being observed.
• Verify personnel possess proper qualifications
Qualifications are not relevant for this task
• Define job assignments and responsibilities
Your job is to pay attention to the movie clips, taking
any notes that seem appropriate to remind you of the
video clip content. From here you will look at all 7
human performance tool videos in aggregate and
grade the three you feel fit into the ballot categories:
Best Overall, Most Informative, and Most Entertaining.
The Human Performance Film FestivalThe Human Performance Film Festival
After this, you will write in your ballot your recommendations and
then complete the two questions and feedback section on the back
of the ballot.
• Identify the task to be performed
You will use place-keeping to keep track of which video we are
currently watching, and then participate in a short discussion after
each video.
• Discuss precautions/limitations and prerequisites
Prerequisite – ensure you have a pencil to write in the ballot
Precaution – these will be binned for voting and feedback following
the class, so please print neatly on the ballot.
• Discuss critical steps
It is critical that you sign the attendance sheet on the way out next to
your printed name in order to receive credit for this training.
• Discuss how status control is maintained
No manipulations performed during this activity
• Identify specific safety concerns (e.g. permits, hazards, energy
sources, radiological concerns/postings, PPE, etc.)
Poor lighting - It will remain fairly dark in this room throughout the
activity, so we must be careful not to trip over anything or
anybody if you need to move throughout the room while a movie clip
is playing. The ushers will ensure lights come back on when
appropriate.
Choking hazard – popcorn, in this environment has a possibility to
cause an issue, so be mindful of this to avoid choking: Alternate
chewing solid food and taking sips of a beverage and wait until
you've chewed and swallowed to speak.
• Discuss specific human performance tools applicable to the task
On the way in you wrote your name on the attendance sheet and you will SELF-CHECK on the way out of this classroom where your name is to sign the completed attendance.
You used PEER-CHECKING (verification practices) to ensure you were in the correct seat.
You used THREE-WAY COMMUNICATION to order your popcorn and water.
You will use PLACE-KEEPING as we step through the upcoming movies.
We are currently conducting a PRE-JOB BRIEFING.
The TWO-MINUTE DRILL and QUESTIONINGATTITUDE tools are not going to be actively used during this training, however, you are expected to understand them, and have to answer the quiz questions on the back of the ballot in the follow up section, prior to obtaining credit for the course.

The Clean UpThe Clean Up
This film-festival teaching and delivery methodologyformat for training purpose was created anddesigned by me, but there is not way I would havebeen able to do this without the burning desire andcommitment from the wonderful people workingwith me at the time at Wolf Creek at all levels. Iencourage you to think of new ways this would fitinto the training environment and please let meknow what you came up with. It works well withonboarding Human Performance Tools forsupplemental staff as shown, but it probably couldwork just as well with many varieties of Safety,Human Resource Issues, Concepts for Business,College, Grade School, or new Leadership Training.
