I had yarns with a couple of lovely Noongar people [part of Justin’s heritage is Noongar], and caught up with country music friends like Bec Hance, Kate Hindle and Ben Sorensen.” But the biggest highlights for Justin were performing to such appreciative audiences and enjoying the impressive talents and variety of all the other artists. He said, “I’ve worked at dozens of festivals, here and overseas, and Boyup Brook would have to be one of the most well run, engaging and friendliest I’ve ever had the pleasure of performing at.” The Country Music Club’s Music Director, Sharon Winter said, “We would like to thank all of the individuals, businesses, sponsors and community organisations who shared their time, expertise and contributions to support the Festival.” Above: Headline artist, John Williamson Above: Mounted Police on parade as part of the Ute and Truck Muster

A Fabulous Festival for All

Music, dancing, poetry, art, markets, workshops, utes and trucks, tourists, volunteers and amazing community spirit contributed to making the 2016 Boyup Brook Country Music Festival such a success.

The five day Festival, held from February 17 to 21, presented fabulous artists with great variety from icon, John Williamson to the energetic Irish/Scottish combination, the Borderers, the impressive vocal range and yodelling of Justin Standley to Rohan Powell and the Walk the Line Band, who performed tribute shows to Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash. “This is a great Festival,” said Rohan Powell. “So many artists from the Eastern States are lining up to be invited to the Boyup Brook Music Festival.”

The Ute and Truck Muster was full of diversity from the convoy of seven ‘Quick Brick’ trucks, vintage trucks and cars to the modern utes throbbing, roaring and tooting their way down the street with flags flying. Perhaps what made this year’s parade so special was the spontaneous applause that was directed toward the volunteer Fire Brigade vehicles as they passed by. The mounted police were also popular with the crowd that lined the entire parade route.

Again the Bush Poets did not disappoint with their many activities over the Festival, starting on Thursday at the Tennis Club and culminating in another huge Bush Poets Breakfast at the Music Park on Sunday morning.

Summing up his first experience of the Boyup Brook Music Festival, Justin Standley said, “Thursday night’s concert was a cracker and set the tone for the rest of the performances.”

“There have been so many highlights,” Justin added. “I could have stayed a week at Harvey Dickson’s Country Music Centre and would still be discovering new and interesting things to admire. I had yarns with a couple of lovely Noongar people [part of Justin’s

My Inbox….

Welcome to the March edition of The Boyup Gazette. February has come and gone and with it, another successful Country Music Festival. Well done to the Country Music Club, volunteers and entire community to once again put on another memorable event.

I would like to take the opportunity to mention our emergency services crews who, in recent months, have unfortunately been kept extremely busy with a number of serious accidents. The work of our Police, Fire, Ambulance and medical personnel is to be commended. Our thoughts are with those directly involved in the accidents and their families, but also with those who have attended the incidents (many in a voluntary capacity) as part of their contribution to the community.

March is a busy month starting with the Camp draft and Open Tennis Tournament and finishing with Easter, along with plenty of activities in between. Time to get out the diary and jotting down some dates….

Until next month

Cheers, Jodi

Landscapes, portraits, abstracts and quilts made up just some of the masterpieces on display at the 2016 Boyup Brook Art Awards. This event was held in conjunction with the annual Country Music Festival from 18 – 20 February.

The Art Awards, now in its seventh year, brings another dimension to the Festival and aims to support, promote and encourage regional artists.

This year, it attracted over 160 entries by 54 artists from 22 locations, including 11 local Boyup Brook artists.

Donnybrook Artist (and former Boyup Brook resident) Christine Blowfield was awarded the Open Prize for ‘Blue Gums’ commenting “I was really surprised and honoured to win the Open Award.” Blowfield not only caught the eye of the judge, Jane Holland, but also the public taking out the People’s Choice award for ‘Golden Light’.

This year was the first time the Boyup Brook CRC coordinated the event with CRC Manager, Jodi Nield paying tribute to everyone involved with the event. “Thank you to our generous sponsors, the talented artists, CRC staff and volunteers who contributed their time during the week.”

“It was also fantastic to see so many community members and visitors wander through the exhibition, resulting in quite a number of pieces sold.” A percentage of the art sales proceeds will be put towards community arts projects in the coming year.

Congratulations to the following prize winners:

Open Prize: (All entries eligible) Winner: Christine Blowfield, Blue Gums

Councillors Corner Cr Eric Muncey

The Annual Electors Meeting was held on Thursday 18th February 2016, it was a poor turn out with only 7 residents in attendance. The main topic of discussion was about trees in the town. It was suggested that the box trees from the War Memorial to the BP be replaced with new trees.

As you can appreciate our Manager of Works and Services Manager gets inundated with telephone calls regarding general concerns and complaints. Enquiries of any nature should be made through the front desk Customer Service Team. All enquiries are electronically registered and will be actioned by the relevant staff member.

I still encourage residents to contact their Ward Councillor if they wish to raise any matters.

I wish to welcome Sergeant Jodie Shuttleworth to the Boyup Brook Shire, please welcome and support Jody if you see her around town.

Comfortmakers

Each year a group of women have gathered to make simple patchwork quilts for the needy.

The fabric is donated by anyone cleaning out their sewing cupboards. Cotton only. Financial help was given over the years by the Lions Club and personal donations. The money is needed for the batting which is purchased each year.

Once again we had an exhibition of the quilts at the CRC last year and received a lot of donations in the coin tin. A big thank you to the CRC staff for all their help .

Last year we received a certificate of thanks from the St Vincent de Paul in Bunbury for our endeavours in producing up to 25 quilts a year to be distributed by them for ones in need.

We meet in the Parish House corner of Jayes Rd. and Robinson Ave. You do not need to sew, we need to have people to pin, iron and match up fabric and all newcomers are welcome.

We will reconvene as a group again on March 4th from 10.30am onwards. Come and say hello!!

Second Hand Books for BlazeAid

Once again, one of the most popular stalls of the Country Music Festival street carnival on Saturday February 20 was the Combined Churches Book Stall, held in the grounds of St Saviour’s Anglican Church.

Many thanks to all the people who contributed in any way to the event’s success. $1,780.00 was raised through the book sale and a further $275.10 was donated from the jumble sale held at the same time.

A number of people work for several weeks prior to the day of the stall sorting and pricing the hundreds of books and then setting up. This year there was fabulous selection of books available so a special thank you to those who donated so much.

Our thanks also to the Country Music Committee for their support of this Book stall.

This year the decision was made to pass the money on to the 'Blaze Aid volunteers' who do so much to assist in particular fire victims from the rural regions. Currently they are in desperate need for equipment to complete tasks such as re-fencing and provision of tools and materials in general support for farmers in the Waroona–Yarloop–Harvey region following the devastating fires there. It is hoped this donation will go someway to assist farmers to get back some part of their livelihood once more.

BlazeAid is funded totally by volunteer groups with no additional Government funding and currently have two camps in operation in WA, one in Grass Patch and the other in Waroona. We have been assured this donation will go directly to assist the Waroona Camp with all equipment purchased ultimately staying in WA for use in the future.

Funding for Boyup Brook Pool

$3 million to revitalise regional pools thanks to Royalties for Regions

Local public swimming pools and aquatic centres in the Warren-Blackwood area will be in top shape this summer, thanks to a funding boost made possible by Royalties for Regions and The Nationals WA.

Member for Warren-Blackwood Terry Redman, welcomed this week’s announcement of almost $3 million in funding for the Community Pool Revitalisation Program – which will be put towards 94 aquatic centres, swimming pools and water playgrounds in regional communities.

“The program was a Nationals WA election commitment, and will help local governments with the funding necessary to maintain and upgrade their aquatic facilities, purchase new equipment, provide staff training, or to subsidise the cost of entry to the pool,” Mr Redman said.

Margaret River, Boyup Brook, Bridgetown, Donnybrook and Manjimup pools in the Warren-Blackwood area will all receive funding from the program that allocates up to $32,000 per aquatic centre.

“Royalties for Regions is ensuring community swimming pools continue to be safe and vibrant places to enjoy physical activity and a healthy lifestyle,” Mr Redman said.

Minister for Sport and Recreation and acting Minister for Regional Development, Mia Davies MLA, announced the funding this week.

“Particularly in regional and remote communities, aquatic centres are important facilities because there’s evidence that when they are well patronised, they contribute to a reduction in chronic disease and improved educational and social outcomes,” Ms Davies said.

“We also know that active children learn better, aside from the mental and physical benefits, there are also great community and social outcomes for kids who are active.”

For a full list of successful Community Pools Revitalisation Program recipients, visit www.dsr.wa.gov.au/cprp-successful.

Once again we had a safe and successful fox shoot, which surpassed our most optimistic expectations! The fox tally was up by almost 50% from last year’s tally (316) with 466 foxes shot. 21 cats were brought in to the weigh-in as well as 110 rabbits. About 127 people were involved in the fox shoot over the weekend of which around 80 attended the breakfast at the Boyup Brook Pistol Club.

A total of $800 was raised for the Royal Flying Doctor Service – this comprised the team entry fees and money donated to the pistol club for the breakfast that they put on for us.

From this result, as well as discussions with shooters and farmers, the rabbit numbers are down for this time of year and the fox numbers are unusually high in some parts of the shire. It was decided that we should have another fox shoot in April, just before lambing. This will be held on the weekend of 8 and 9 April and we will only require tails for the count. There will be a breakfast at the pistol club at 9:00 on Sunday 10 April – no team registrations or prizes and anyone is welcome to take part.

After the prize giving, a regular visitor from Perth, Derek Hall, North Metro Shooters and Fishers Party delegate, spoke about some of the proposed changes to the WA Firearms act and how these changes will affect our fox shoot and farmers in general. Proposals include yearly renewal of all property letters (these are a once-off requirement for a licence application at present), limiting shooters to properties for which they have formal written permission only (no more verbal permission) and requiring farmers to keep a register of everyone shooting on their land as well as installing a safe for these firearms (license holders are required to ensure the safekeeping at present – as it should be). The few proposals listed here will mean a massive amount of unnecessary paperwork every year, just to run our fox shoot. This year we had about 100 people shooting on 83 different properties with most teams shooting on more than one property – it would be impossible to comply with all this paperwork as suggested, not to mention the policing issues! Please take this up with your local member.

Thank you to all who participated and gave their time in various ways to make this possible. A big thank you also to our many sponsors who helped to make this the biggest shoot so far – Boyup Brook Pistol Club, Boyup Brook Co-Op, Boyup Brook

Farm Supplies, Greenline, Hiview Merino Stud, Blackwood Shooting Supplies, Insight Gunsmithing, Peter Bradford, Claremont Firearms, Roy Alexander & Sons, Beaton Firearms, Southwest Firearms, Sportsmarine, Shooters Shed, Mitre 10 Bridgetown, Gun Mart & Tackle, Belmont Guns & Tackle, Boyup Brook Post Office and Rylington Park.

As always, this event has built and strengthened relationships in a healthy outdoor environment with a significant environmental outcome.

The Blackwood Basin Group (BBG) in conjunction with Soil Restoration Farming (NSW) are excited to be co-hosting Agro-Ecologist, Educator and Systems Thinker – Nicole Masters from New Zealand as well as Walter Jehne – Soil Microbiologist and Soil Ecologist from the ACT, in their first appearance on their WA tour at a Soil Health Forum in Boyup Brook on Thursday 17 March.

The forum ‘Answers and Actions for Healthy Soils in a Western Australian Climate’ will showcase the increasingly talked about theme of protecting and enhancing our soil microbiology in order to combat limiting factors in plant performance in our climatically-changing farming environment and looking towards versatile tools to address stagnant problems and unlocking the potential in yield, quality, food nutrition and profit, now and for the future.

Nicole is the director/owner of Integrity Soils, New Zealand and has extensive practical and theoretical experience in regenerative/holistic farming practices. She has been communicating these methods throughout Australasia and North America since 2003; helping to inspire and guide farmers into new and innovative ways to produce food with soil as a major driver for ecosystem health.

Walter is the co-founder of Healthy Soils Australia and has extensive field and research experience at a national (CSIRO) and international (UN) level in the management of soil biology

for regenerating soil health to improve productivity and resilience in agricultural systems.

Last year he spoke at a UN conference in Berlin, Germany celebrating the Year of the Soil.

“This is an exciting opportunity for food producers to draw on international knowledge and tools from soil health experts that are passionate about unlocking the potential and harnessing what their soils have to offer in this ever demanding economic climate,” said Sara Weir, BBG Project Officer.

“This topic of the importance of a cleaner growing, safer and more versatile farming system is becoming increasingly talked about and it’s great to be able to open communication channels to give WA farmers a chance to work more towards a sustainable farming ecosystem.

The packed cropping and mixed farming forum will look into combining the best of chemistry, physics, biology and microbiology with sound on-ground farm practices. Attendees will also hear from Agronomic Consultant, Deb Archdeacon from Agronomica, who will introduce a local (Boyup Brook) stubble and fish emulsion project and speak on how stubble retention fits into building soil carbon, productivity and resilience.

Running from 9am-5pm at the Boyup Brook Football Club, with a cost of $50 per person or $90 per couple, completing the day with a sundowner, the day is sure to be of benefit to anyone that attends.

Please download your registration form from www.soilrestorationfarming.com.au/events and send back to [email protected] to secure your opportunity to attend this exciting soil health forum. Otherwise, contact Sara Weir from the BBG on 9765 1555 or email [email protected] for more details.

If you miss Nicole and Walter in Boyup Brook, they will also be making an appearance in York and Dandaragan in the following days.

This project is generously sponsored by Nutrisoils, EcoGrowth, Hi-Tech Ag Solutions, Healthy Soils Australia, Best Environmental Technologies, and supported by the South West Catchments Council, through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme

The Art of Doodling

How often do you sit with a pen in hand and make a few lines, shapes and scribbles here and there on the nearest piece of paper?

It happens more often than you think and recently, the Boyup Brook Community Resource Centre conducted a workshop dedicated to doing just that - doodling.

A number of community members let their creativity flow during the ninety minute session with participant Trish Pottinger saying, “It was great fun and it makes me feel more creative and relaxed.” This statement reinforced the claim of workshop facilitator and artist, Amanda Doust that “Doodling is fun, brings joy and reduces stress levels.”

Make Tax Claims With Phone App

Federal Member for O’Connor Rick Wilson MP is encouraging workers to tally work-related deductions using the myDeductions tool within the ATO’s phone app.

“The 2015-16 financial year is going to be the first time taxpayers can use the myDeductions tool to complete their return,” Mr Wilson said.

“In the 2014-15 financial year, 8.4 million individual taxpayers claimed work-related expenses. Rather than storing the piles of receipts at home, this is a great tool to ensure all work-related expenses, including car trips and donations, are stored and accounted for electronically. All work-related expenses in the myDeductions tool can be uploaded when tax returns are being filled in, or sent directly to the tax agent.”

There are three simple rules for workers to follow: The money needs to be spent by them; The expenses must be work-related; and There must be a record to prove it.

“While people incur different expenses during the year it is important for taxpayers to check what they are entitled to, based on the type of work they do,” he said.

“I encourage workers to download the ATO app and use the myDeductions feature, if they haven’t already.”

To get started visit www.ato.gov.au/mydeductions.

The CRC has recently received funding from the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) to improve the knowledge and understanding of Boyup Brook’s teenagers when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle.

After conducting several HEAL (Healthy Eating Activity Lifestyle) programs for the wider community, facilitator Jodi Nield collaborated with the Boyup Brook District High School to apply for funds to roll out a teenager specific HEAL program across the entire middle school.

The program will run for eight weeks in Term 2 and will foster a positive attitude to leading a healthy lifestyle in formative years, developing lifelong habits and reducing the risk of lifestyle health issues into adulthood.

FOR SHEEP AND CATTLE

The Priority Bittern and Waterbird Biodiversity Enhancement Project, coordinated by the Blackwood Basin Group (BBG), recently ran a Black Cockatoo identification and information workshop.

The four year project, funded by the Australian Government, aims to create a wetland haven at Schwenke’s Dam, Greenbushes, to attract critically endangered waterbirds.

Cockatoo Workshop The cockatoo workshop was a complete success. The morning started off with the hint of rain making everyone a little nervous about the bush walk, but the rain soon cleared leaving the keen bird watches with the perfect weather to search for cockatoo signs.

Tegan Douglas, the Forest Black Cockatoo Project Coordinator from Birdlife Australia, showed everyone how to be bird detectives out in the field and use the signs of scat, feeding, and roosting to determine which cockatoo has been in the area.

After morning tea back in Greenbushes, Tegan took the group through the more specific ways of telling the differences between Baudin’s, Carnaby’s, and the Forest Red-Tailed Black Cockatoos based on appearance and calls.

“We are all set now to take part in the Great Cocky Count in April, the biggest single survey for black-cockatoos in Western Australia,” said Project Officer, Margaret Jakobson.

If anyone is interested in joining the Great Cocky Count go to www.birdlife.org.au. Remember, local knowledge is critical in increasing the knowledge of where these magnificent birds are.

Garden Club Cuttings

The Garden Club AGM was held on a very very hot day at Lance and Margaret Hester’s , out at Norlup on 9th Feb.

A good turnout of 25 or so members were there. We had an earlier start time than usual 9am to beat the heat. Lance gave a talk about the early years at the property, where Lance and Margaret have lived for over 50 years.

There was much laughter when Lance retold stories about fixing up the old homestead. A walk around the beautiful old garden was then enjoyed by many, roses, lavender, daisies, wisteria amongst the huge old trees and a cuppa and cake to finish.

Many thanks to Lance and Margaret, and also for the cold icy water. Thanks must also go to Sue and Phyll for all your very interesting outings and garden visits that you both have arranged and Margaret for all the delicious cakes.

Just a reminder that membership payment is due $20 single and $30 couple.

Our next visit will be to the Ashbil Community Garden in Bridgetown, meet at the Shire Hall at 9.15 to leave at 9.30am Tuesday 8th March or make your own way there, Stewart St , at the back of Scott’s Tavern. Please bring plants to swap, chair, cup, friends and $2 for non-members.

Aged Care Improvement Grants

Up to $19 million will be made available to improve residential aged care and dementia care in regional areas, thanks to the Royalties for Regions funded Southern Inland Health Initiative.

Member for Warren-Blackwood Terry Redman, said the one-off grants would help older people to remain living in their communities.

“Grants will be made available to private and not-for-profit organisations to enhance facilities and services which allow aged residents to remain healthy and active members of regional communities,” Mr Redman said.

“It’s an important initiative from Royalties for Regions which will go a long way towards keeping our aged residents in the community and in an environment which is familiar and safe to them, close to friends and family.”

Mr Redman said aged care would be a significant challenge for Australia in the very near future.

“Within the next five years it’s estimated that18 per cent of Australia’s population will be over the age of 65.

“The demands for aged care facilities and services will greatly increase over the next decade as many older residents seek to continue to live independently within their communities,” Mr Redman said.

“For this to happen, it’s crucial that Government and the aged care sector work together to invest in aged care initiatives, especially in regional areas.”

Acting Regional Development Minister Mia Davies said it was important to provide regional seniors with the opportunity to remain in their communities as they age.

“The best residential aged care options are strengthened through collaboration and therefore I encourage eligible private providers to apply for these grants,” Ms Davies said.

Proposals which reflect contemporary aged care practices, partnerships and investment beyond the allocated grant will be considered favourably.

The grants are available in the Great Southern, Goldfields, Mid-West, South West, and Wheatbelt.

Information about the grants can be accessed at www.tenders.wa.gov.au.

The Southern Inland Health Initiative is transforming health care in the State’s south, made possible by $500 million from Royalties for Regions.

Mobile Black Spot Petition

A Kojonup veterinarian is calling on Boyup Brook residents to join her fight for increased funding to improve mobile phone black spots after her partner was tragically killed.

Katharine Marsh is spearheading a petition aimed at the Federal government to increase mobile phone black spot funding and commit to a deadline to rectify currently identified locations.

“I am campaigning for this issue after my partner, Mick, tragically passed away following a motorbike accident which occurred in a mobile phone black spot, delaying emergency assistance for 20 – 30 minutes,” Miss Marsh said.

“My experience is not an isolated incident - others have been affected in a similar way. Recent bushfires in late 2015 - early 2016 have also highlighted the problems of mobile phone black spots preventing access to emergency services.”

There are more than 6,000 nominated mobile phone black spots throughout Australia, including near capital cities, along major highways and transport routes and in whole towns and villages. WA has 570 black spots registered.

Miss Marsh said where there is a black spot, there is no mobile network coverage and emergency services like ‘000’ and alternative numbers such as ‘112’ will not work.

“If you are faced with a life-threatening emergency and are in a mobile phone black spot area you will not be able to obtain emergency assistance. This could be the difference between life and death,” Miss Marsh said.

“The technology exists to eradicate mobile phone black spots – it is simply a matter of further funding.”

The Federal Government has committed $160 million, with the Round 2 locations expected to be announced at the end of this year.

“After this current round, there are no further plans for funding for mobile phone black spots, yet current funding is like to leave at least 1,000 black spots still unaddressed,” Miss Marsh said.

“If mobile phone black spots in your area miss out this time there is no guarantee as to when they will be resolved.”

To download the petition visit: http://triple0foraustralia.wix.com/tr ip le0foraus tra l ia o r ht tps: / /www.facebook.com/triple0foraustralia/

Miss Marsh is aiming to collect 100,000 signatures by April 30 to send to the Standing Committee on Petitions for presentation to the Australian parliament.

Cocky Count Back for 2016

The 2015 Great Cocky Count was a great success. It resulted in us gaining an even better understanding of cockatoo numbers across the southwest and identify important roosting habitat, which helps us in planning for their recovery.

We are excited to announce the eighth annual Great Cocky Count is happening Sunday 3 April 2016!

The Great Cocky Count is an annual citizen science survey that aims to count as many Black-Cockatoos as possible across WA on a single night. Getting involved is easy – as a volunteer you simply go to the roost location we allocate to you and count all the cockatoos flying into their night-time roosting trees. The survey only takes an hour, starting 30 minutes before sunset.

To register as a volunteer, go to the Great Cocky Count Website and fill in the new online registration form or downloadable version. Registrations close on Sunday 20 March.

Do you have a black cockatoo roost or nest site near you? BirdLife are trying to locate more roost and nest sites across WA, so please contact us at [email protected] to let us know if you are aware of any near you.

More information about the Great Cocky Count and BirdLife’s Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo Recovery Program is available at http://birdlife.org.au/projects/southwest-black-cockatoo-recovery/great-cocky-count-swbc

The present town hall was built in Boyup Brook in 1936 the same year as the Bank of New South Wales. Both were built by the same contractor at the same time.

To celebrate the opening of the Town Hall a community concert was organised, for the early part of the evening. Boyup always had a wealth of talent, so there was an assured evening of entertainment. I don’t know the names of the cast, but I do recall my mother of whom her family were very proud was one of the soloist, and teamed up with another lady in a duet. Later years we learnt that ladies name was Dorrie Brooks, after an opening ceremony and a gala ball. Myself and my siblings were very young and left the venue before the festivities commenced. However, the event was an occasion to be remembered for many years by a lot of people.

Over the years many happy events have taken place at the hall, and still are today. Although the hall was first opened it was noted for the acoustics as being second to none of any hall of that era in the area.

We are forever grateful to the civic minded forbears who were responsible for the hall being built, remembering that we were still trying to recover from one of the worst depressions in history, and there was no grants or handouts like today. Also we were only three years before World War II. The diligent handling of finances during that time is a big credit to all concerned.

There are many events that have taken place in the hall over the years, and on all occasions we have relied in local talent for backup. To mention a few in my opinion doesn’t give fair recognition to everyone who deserves it.

Some of the events over the years in the Town Hall: Can anyone remember the West Australian Symphony Orchestra visiting Boyup Brook? The welcome home of World War II servicemen and women? The War Efforts Queens. Each representing an organisation, namely Show Queen (Val Smith), Flax Queen (Betty Forrest), Sport Queen (Maisie Cummings)? Between them they raised over six thousand pounds. A ball was held to celebrate the occasion. Then we had the Debutantes; The Apple Queen contestants being selected to compete in the Apple Festivals, and the contestants who were selected to enter for Miss Australia Quests, to mention just a few.

I can’t recall how many years it was used as a picture theatre for a weekly picture screening. Peggy Clancy looked after the ticket sales, while Mrs Palmer ran the kiosk. In short the Town Hall was the hub of social activity for as long as I can remember.

Perhaps one shouldn’t single out particular people for mention. But during the war years we relied on a few people very much as far as providing music for dancers, there was a local group consisting of three pianists Josie Outridge (nee Barron), Rae and Vivian Brooks. Mick Dryden played the drums, and Jim Thompson, violin and between them they kept the crowd hopping around on the dance floor on many occasions during the dark years of the war.

We all know that there have been many celebrity people visit and meet the people in the hall over the years, but no one can over shadow the contributions of the local citizens. I am sure we can all recall happy occasions of some sort. There have also been some lively meetings, and also was the venue for the final meeting winding up the affairs of the Flax Mill.

One of my earliest memories of a picture show in the hall featured Shirley Temple, childhood film star, about eight years old. She won the hearts of everyone with her tap dancing and singing The Good Ship Lollipop. From the time she was in her early twenties she entered the political world very successfully. I dreamt that when I get to the Pearly Gates and she is not waiting for me I am going to lodge a complaint.

Nine organic gardeners from across the Blackwood River Valley met with Sharyn Carroll and Shelley Cullen, the organisers of the Organic Garden Trail (Margaret River) to investigate the formation of a Blackwood River Valley Organic Garden Trail.

Facilitated by the Blackwood River Valley Marketing Association Inc. (BRVMA), their committee is excited about the prospect of an Organic Garden Trail being established in their area.

A presentation to the gardeners present explained how the garden trail worked, what support is given by the organisers and what is expected of the gardeners involved.

Underlined was that organic gardens are not all the same, and the trail can encompass permaculture gardens, commercial properties, hobby farmers, organic orchards, parkland type gardens, community gardens and anything in between.

The only requirement being that all gardens are operated under the organic gardening principle, but not necessarily certified organic.

The gardeners who attended were enthusiastic in their support of this idea and cannot wait to see the trail established. Adrian Price of Boyup Brook said that it was of great value to meet and chat with others wishing to promote chemical free food production.

Anita Iuretich, of Forestview Farmstay, Bridgetown was the first to put her hand up with the words “ I’m in”.

Christine King of Greenbushes said she was impressed with the organic garden trail presentation in Bridgetown.

“The promotional materials; website, pamphlets and signs were excellent. I feel the trail would be a great addition to the attractions in the Blackwood River Valley”.

Gardens from Nannup, Balingup, Boyup Brook, Greenbushes and Bridgetown are required to build a comprehensive trail.

If you are interested in showcasing your organic garden, or simply want more information, contact Sharyn Carroll on 0402 944 729 or visit the Organic Garden Trail website www.organicgardentrail.com.au.

Jesus dismissed a crowd of listeners and fans in order to spend time with His Father in prayer. As a result, when He returned to the crowd He was empowered to work miracles.

Think about it; before an airliner takes off, the attendant tells you that if the plane gets into trouble you should secure your own oxygen mask before attempting to help others with theirs. After all, unless you’re getting enough oxygen, how can you help them?

So, are your own needs being met? If not, it’s time to start taking care of yourself before you burn out. You can’t travel quietly through life hoping people will recognise when your plate is full. Speak up, or they’ll just keep pouring on more problems and responsibilities. Personal empowerment begins by taking control of your life.

Overloaded people fail at marriage, ministry and management. They fail at parenting, partnership and personal endeavours.

Like an airplane, if you carry too much baggage you won’t get off the ground.

When you’re motivated by the need to please others or impress them, you’ll take on too much and fail to reach the heights God planned for you. Or you’ll crash because you ignored your limitations.

Every situation that arises doesn’t warrant your attention! Was Jesus misunderstood when He dismissed the crowd? Probably. And you’ll have to make that same decision too.

People who don’t recognise your needs and respect your goals will drain you, divert you, and keep you grounded.

So what’s the answer? Give what you can, and learn when to say ‘enough!’

Live Performance by Emily Barker

We are excited to bring the feature film 'Hector' to Bridgetown.

Hector is a UK full length feature film directed by Jake Gavin making his debut in the industry. The musical score for the film is composed by Emily Barker, also making her debut as a composer in film.

“I am really excited to bring this film to my home town, Bridgetown and to play a live set including songs that I wrote for the film. The film is really touching and after reading the script, I wrote three songs immediately – before I'd seen any footage whatsoever! I am looking forward to sharing them with you.” [Emily]

'Hector' stars Peter Mullan as Hector McAdam, also starring Keith Allan and Sarah Solemani.

The film is about family, friendship and human compassion. Hector embarks on his annual pilgrimage from Scotland to a London shelter for the homeless, to share Christmas with some of the friends he has made over the years. Aware that this may be his last journey, Hector agrees to reconnect with his past and reunite with those he left behind.

Audiences responded with both laughter and tears when the film received its world premier at the 2015 Edinburgh International Film Festival. It has gained critical acclaim in the UK since its release.

The film will shown on a BIG full size cinema screen with full sound at the Bridgetown Town Hall on Sunday 13th March @ 6pm.Emily will perform live prior to the commencement of the film. A Q&A session with Emily is scheduled after the film.

The Championship Mixed Doubles event, sponsored by local accountants MacNeils, was held in very hot conditions on Saturday, February 27.

Eight pairs contested the event with the winners being John and Julie Robinson who defeated Craig and Jodi Nield (pictured below) in a match tiebreak after they reached one set all. Winners of the plate were Sharon Nield and Mal Prosser.

A great day of tennis was followed by refreshments and pizza.

The annual Boyup Brook Open Tournament will be conducted on March 5 and 6 and has attracted almost 100 players.

The event caters for all ages and abilities from Under 10s to SuperVeterans and everyone in between.

A highlight is the large number of Boyup Brook junior members who have entered the Tournament, many for the first time, which is a reflection on the investment the Club has made into the junior program through professional coaching.

The courts are looking a picture, thanks to the fantastic efforts of the Shire Works team and our visitors are in for a great weekend of tennis in a social atmosphere.

The weekend following the Tournament will see another event with a long standing history, the Loving Cup. This event sees partners off the court pair up on the court and this year, the Tennis Club is inviting former members to join in the fun.

The Loving Cup will be played on March 12 with matches commencing at 2pm. If you would like to participate, please RSVP to Club Captain, John Robinson (0409 104 303) by Wednesday, 9 March. We also encourage everyone to wear red or pink on the day. After all, every tennis match begins with love.
