When Jenn approached us last spring about a guitar raffle to raise funds for Liberty House, we had no idea that her family’s journey of healing would become an inspirational story of giving. "We lived in a home where dad and husband was angry and controlling, unsatisfied with himself," Jenn said. "I realized that he was jealous of his own children and the life that they had." Jenn and her boys, Nathan and Nash, had to "walk on egg shells" at home, fearing their father might lash out at them unexpectedly. "We never knew when he was gonna snap at us," Nash said, "and sometimes he just spanked us for no reason." Buying guitars became a fixation. Their father accumulated 72 guitars, choosing not to pay the mortgage and often aquiring them just to spite others and his family. "There was a red GHL," Nathan said, "I remember he said that I was able to play that one, but when he saw me playing it, he got mad at me, and I got a spanking." In the midst of escalating challenges at home, Jenn’s husband died of a heart attack, and she, Nathan and Nash were able to begin healing from the trauma they had experienced. To begin, they wanted to do something about the guitars. Partnering with Tim, owner of Guitar Castle, they put the red GHL up for raffle, and decided the proceeds would go to Liberty House to help children in situations like Nathan and Nash. Later, the winner of the guitar raffle wrote Jenn, Nathan and Tim a letter saying the story of the guitar had moved him immensely. Because he was a drummer, he decided to sell the guitar and donate the money from the sale to Liberty House. Furthermore, he chose to double the contribution with his own funds. There are many pathways to healing and hope. Jenn, Nathan and Nash turned a symbol of pain into inspiration for others. With immense gratitude, we want to share that inspiration with you.

"We never knew when he was gonna snap at us," Nash said, "and sometimes he just spanked us for no reason."

Buying guitars became a fixation. Their father accumulated 72 guitars, choosing not to pay the mortgage and often aquiring them just to spite others and his family.

"There was a red GHL," Nathan said, "I remember he said that I was able to play that one, but when he saw me playing it, he got mad at me, and I got a spanking."

In the midst of escalating challenges at home, Jenn’s husband died of a heart attack, and she, Nathan and Nash were able to begin healing from the

trauma they had experienced.

Page 2: A Family's Story of Healing

As the Program Manager for Hope & Wellness, I have been present for many life-changing moments.

Two years ago, I witnessed a seasoned detective read a story to a bright-eyed child. Before that meeting, the detective had been haunted by the image of the child’s terrified eyes in the midst of being tortured. However, on the day of their reunion, there was laughter and healing.

A year ago, I sat with a family as they met the officer who rescued the children from the gruesome scene of their parent’s death. Again, I saw healing as those last images of horror were replaced with warm hugs and tokens to award the bravery of the children.

I have listened as a child, afraid to say the name of his perpetrator for nearly a year, suddenly found the courage to say it over and over again and then sit with sheer delight and surprise when he realized the huge mountain he had just climbed.

I have said goodbye to someone who conquered both cancer and the ghosts of her trauma and set out on her path to become a healer for others.

These stories inspire and remind me of the courage and resiliency in the children and families we see. And yet, new stories of hope and healing are being made each day.

I find irony in the pattern that, while it is my job and passion to inspire children to heal from trauma, I am often inspired by them. I am want to see more, care more, help more.

The Hope & Wellness team often sees children who are at the lowest points in their lives, but, as we have seen over and over, children CAN heal.

As a supporter, YOU have made this possible.

Spreading Inspiration

Alison Kelley, JD Chief Executive Officer

Your generosity has been a blessing this year, and we are so excited to strengthen our programs and offer new efforts for

children and families in Marion and Polk Counties! In 2019, be sure to sign up for a Stewards of Children® training if you haven’t already and let us know if you would like us to come train your group or organization. Also, we are recruiting five

more qualified mental health therapists to help us serve more children and expand our therapy services to adult survivors of childhood abuse. Working together, we can make a big difference for our community! Thank you for all you do to

help others and the children served by Liberty House!

Holiday SoiréeA Gathering of HopeOver the course of a year, Liberty House sees over 1,100 children for concerns of abuse, neglect, trauma or grief. This would be impossible without amazing community support. The Holiday Soirée is a celebration with great food, dancing and fundraising to benefit the vulnerable children in our community. Among the great fun and impassioned speakers was a room full of people who stepped up and made a contribution to change the lives of children. Thank you to everyone who attended!
