Programs rapidly becoming major functions of fire departments across Virginia and the U.S.

““Survivability of the fire service is no longer Survivability of the fire service is no longer dependent on fire suppression.”dependent on fire suppression.”

Page 8: A Guide for Station Personnel

Impact of Fire EducationImpact of Fire EducationFire deaths in the U.S. have dropped

• 12,000 fire deaths a year in the 70’s • Current average of 3,400 or less

What We Have LearnedWhat We Have Learned

Conditions are Critical Prior to Arrival of Fire Department

• Little or no opportunity to perform effective life saving rescue

• Fire suppression personnel at a higher risk of injury and/or death

Virginia Fire Marshal Academy CWYC 2011 9

“In most cases, life safety is too critical to rely on response time”

Page 10: A Guide for Station Personnel

Educating Today's CitizensEducating Today's Citizens

• In a uniformed and consistent manner • Establish age appropriate objectives • Apply proper presentation skills • Communicate objectives effectively.

Consider the Differences

• Would a scout group have different needs than students in a classroom?

• Would seniors living in their own home need a different program than the ones living in assisted living?

• Would a family from another culture understand the safety messages we grew up with?

• Along with working smoke alarms reduce the potential of fire death by 80%

• Reduces risk for firefighters by reducing the severity of the fire

• Cost effective - about the same cost of upgrading your carpet or cabinets

• Potential for lower insurance rates• Over 95% effective• Reduces overall damage including water

damage

Fire will always be a potential threat to the lives and the well being of every American. It is appropriate to close with the

reminder that today’s firefighters and educators

have to be better trained to meet the demands of Public Safety, this includes Fire and

Life Safety Education.
