Let’s start with some real basics.

Of course, price is always an issue but not if you buy an inferior product that will need regular warranty work.

Now here is a very sad but worrying thing – many companies who supply inferior garage doors continually go out of business on a regular basis so as not to have to honour their customer’s warranty claims! They then start a new and identical business under a new name. It is an ongoing cycle for many of them.

So, what should you be looking for?

• Our number one recommendation is to look for a supplier whohas been in business for at least five years.

• Then we would advise you to check out the length of theirwarranties. Our recommendation is that you need at least 5years on the actual door and at least 5 years on the motor. A few companies will offer even better than that. Also an important part of any warranty should be the length of warranty on the colour integrity being maintained.

With inferior doors you will notice colour fading after as little as a few years. So we would suggest that you accept nothing less than ten years warranty here. The same applies to scratch resistancy. At least ten years.

• Build quality is a very tough subject as you simply won’t knowthe answer to that without asking the right questions but thequality of the panels is the first thing. Many companies buy theirpanels in from Macedonia and other Eastern Europeancountries. They are not made of the same quality materials.

• Another big challenge you may face is not knowing whatthickness and strength the barrel is. Basically, the roller doorsand roller shutters wrap around the barrel. Poor quality barrelsoften twist and buckle rendering your door useless.

• The next thing to look out for is the linkage between the rollerslats. Cheaper doors use plastic fittings to attach the slats to thebarrel. They very regularly break and your door will not move upor down.

• Another thing that may or may not be of interest to you is thebottom panel. Many companies simply do not strengthen thebottom panel to keep cost down. Good companies make thebottom panel out of fortified aluminium (known as EXTRUDED).This makes the security of your garage door for superior and willwithstand a crow bar being used, which is a common way forthieves to break in.

• Insulation values also vary immensely and, if this is important toyou, then choose a door that has a minimum of 13mminsulation.

• Another thing to look out for is a full box that encloses your rollerslats in a case that protects them from the elements. This is nota particularly cheap option and many companies do not providea box. We strongly advise that you include this as an option if itis not standard.

• Finally – the tube motor. This is of course what makes everything go around as such.

Once again, the temptation for more unscrupulous small manufacturers, who even work from their own garage at home, to use inferior motors to cut cost. These motors are often made in Asia and below standard. We would advise you to accept nothing less than five years warranty on the motor.

• You have every right to ask many of these questions and we would strongly recommend that you do. A new garage door is quite a large investment and we would simply like to think that we have helped you here to avoid buying an inferior product.
