    INTRODUCTION

The information in this guide is intended to furnish researchers with the location of source material relating to New Netherland, describe relevant documents and collections, and di-rect researchers to available translations and digitized manuscripts. Originally compiled in 1977 and 1978, A Guide to Dutch Manuscripts Relating to New Netherland in United States Repositories was updated in 20102012 under a project of the New Netherland Research Center and the New York State Archives with support from the New Netherland Institute and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The information compiled during that project is included in this updated guide.

The following restrictions were imposed on the compilation of material: 1) The time period extends from the earliest years of Dutch West India Company activity in New Netherland to the final relinquishing of control of the territory to the English in 1674; the interim pe-riod of English government from 1664 to 1673 is included because the continuity of New Netherland was only disrupted at the executive level. 2) All the manuscripts represented in the guide are in the Dutch langauge with the exception of some non-Dutch records in-cluded within the same volume. Records gathered during the compilation of this material that fall outside these restrictions have been retained in Appendix E. 3) All of the records are located in repositories in the United States. See Jaap Jacobss New Netherland: A Dutch Colony in Seventeenth-Century America for a list of related collections and repositories located outside the United States.

The guide is organized as follows: The repositories appear in alphabetical order by state. (For easy access to each state or repository, open the bookmarks panel in Adobe Reader.) The documents in each repository are listed first by archival collection, then chronogically. In order to facilitate future updates, the numbering system of the original guide has been abandoned; the numbers in brackets preceding most entries refer to the numbers in the original guide. Entries preceded by an asterisk were added during the 20102012 update.

Each entry begins with a keyword in upper case letters followed by a brief description of the essential information in the document. Keywords in blue link to online catalog entries in the New York State Librarys Historical Document Inventory (HDI). The date of the document is located below the description at the left margin; the repositorys identifica-tion number or code appears on the same line right of center. This descriptive informa-tion is followed by information on available translations and digitized manuscripts. When available online, blue text links to translations.1 When only available in print, red text links to its entry in Google Books or WorldCat. Below this is information on access to those documents that have been copied for the New Netherland collection at the New York State Library; these copies are indicated either as A-FM (microfilms) or SC16676 (a collection comprising photocopies of originals). The New York Colonial Manuscripts at the New York State Archives are not described in detail because of the availability of E.B. OCallaghans Calendar of Historical Manuscripts. The appendices contain material

too extensive for inclusion in the entry text, especially the translations of the New York Colonial Manuscripts printed in the NYCD series. In order to maintain a compact format, abbreviations are employed for frequently used sources (consult the list of abbreviations at the end of the introduction). Information appearing in brackets has been inferred from other sources.

This guides electronic-only format allows for easy updates. With this in mind, please con-tact us with any errors or omissions, or with information on any new collections that fit within the parameters of this guide.
