Helpful Tips

Asking for Recommendations

Recommendations offer valuable insight in determining how others view you. You should ask individuals who

will support and advocate for you. Some suggestions would be teachers, counselors, coaches and community

leaders. Do not ask family members. Select individuals you interact with often and who are familiar with your

talents, successes and abilities. When requesting a recommendation from someone, be respectful of their time

and schedule.

Provide them with the Recommendation form included in this booklet. Also, supply them with details about

yourself including any awards, your activities and community involvement, your employment or other pertinent

information they may not know about you.

Be sure to give them appropriate time to complete their recommendation. And always thank them for their

support.

Essay Writing

In addition to a GPA requirement, many scholarship applications require an essay. An essay can provide a

valuable window into your abilities and personality that numerical data cannot provide. A well-written, carefully

constructed essay can give you an advantage in being selected as the recipient of that scholarship.

Be sure to specifically answer the question that is asked on the scholarship application. Create an essay that

is well thought out and reflects your viewpoint. Proofread before submitting! Have someone else review your

application not only for content, but to assist in finding grammatical errors.
