A History of the Sun City Yacht Club (NEW SECTIONS ADDED APRIL 2021)

A history of the yacht club will inevitably include some aspects of the history of Two Rocks and Yanchep. Several club members; Ann Santry, Sarah Knapp and John Utley are compiling the history through club records, other historic documents such as newspapers and Wanneroo Museum archives together with conversations and interviews with people who’ve been involved with the club and the local communities since the earliest development of ‘Yanchep Sun City in 1969.

The club’s website provides us with an opportunity to reprise the club’s history as we interact with readers and perhaps prompt memories for an evolving document.

The structure is by no means settled but we’re proposing the following outline and hope to fill in the various sections as time goes by. We’d love to have your feedback and contributions, whether as corrections or as new material. You can email us at [email protected] or phone 0428 628 753

Preface

Section 1 – The Sun City Yacht Club

From the inauguration of the Sun City Yacht Club on 11th November 1974, through the relocation of the club into the current buildings, the co-ordination of marine safety through two-way radios in the club office leading to establishment of Two Rocks Volunteer Marine Rescue Group and other significant events in the club’s development through till the present.

Section 2 – The Americas Cup

The little club that roared! Southern Cross training off Two Rocks for the 1974 Americas Cup and subsequent challenge by Sun City Yacht Club for the 1977 Americas Cup.

Section 3 - Dinghy Sailing – SEE BELOW

Dinghy sailing has played a critical role in the club since the beginning. Many accomplished sailors had their first experience with SCYC. We’re telling that story

Section 4 – The Tall Ships

From 1974 until the Challenger Harbour was built at Fremantle in 1983-84, the only place that recreational sailors could shelter along the coast between Rockingham and Jurien or Geraldton was at Two Rocks. This led to the development of some keen keelboat racing out of Two Rocks and even keener social sailing with the locals fondly referring to the keelboats as the ‘Tall Ships’

Section 5 – Social Events…and the People

The Club Opening Days, lots of different social events and the characters that made them a success.

Section 6 – SCYC and the Community

The events and features that still resonate with long term Perth residents such as the Birdman Rally and Atlantis Marine Park as well as local events including the once regular Blessing of the Fleet, art exhibitions, fairs and carnivals.

Appendices

We’d like to create a long term source of information about the club in terms of a detailed set of appendices, such as the following: 1) Chronological table 2) List of Founding Members 3) Club Committees = SEE BELOW 4) Club Commodores 5) Club Trophy Winners 6) Anecdotes and Interviews 7) Letter from Alan Bond from Karnet Prison 8) Letter acknowledging SCYC as winner of the Thomas Lipton Cup and hence challenger

for 1977 Americas Cup 9) Club newsletters

The following was compiled by John Utley – some of the dates are uncertain and no doubt, there are many more interesting details that can be added if readers come forward.

Section 3 - Club Dinghy Sailing

The building of the Two Rocks marina in 1973-74 proved an immediate attraction for sail boats including an off the beach catamaran race from Pinnaroo Point in Whitfords up to Two Rocks. According to the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club (ORSSC) historian Ian Younghusband as recorded on the ORSSC website, the inaugural race in November 1974 involved 22 surf cats, growing to 83 boats in the following year and expanding to 144 boats, in 14 classes at its peak. The catamarans at times achieved impressive speeds over this 20NM direct line distance with a record of 1 hour 51 minutes and 20 seconds recorded by a Hobie 16 held until 1996.

The success of the catamaran event would have been a substantial motivation for the fledgling Sun City Yacht Club to acquire its own catamarans. In 1976 the club purchased three 13’ fibreglass Hawke Cats with half the funding provided by Yanchep Sun City and the boats appropriately named Sun City I, II and III.

The young and not-so-young sailors were very willing to challenge the elements with frequent racing outside the marina including runs down to the wreck of the Alkimos, to Yanchep Lagoon and to The Spot as well as spectacular racing within the marina.

Some of the most active years for the catamarans were those from 1975 to 1981 during which time, SCYC hosted the 1978 Hawke Surf Cat State Championships. At that event, the club’s John McCosham was the overall winner, progressing on to become National Champion later in the year in Tasmania. Catamarans remained a substantial part of the club’s activities through till at least 2005.

Other dinghy classes; Flying Ants and Mudlarks were also introduced early in the club’s history with Flying Ants racing for club honours from 1976 and Mudlarks from 1981. These tiny dinghies would often race outside the marina as well as on weekends away in Moore River and at events on the Swan River. Many juniors learnt to sail in Mudlarks during this period with John Elkington as their instructor. John would walk along the small beach with a thin cord in his hand attached to a dinghy as the sailors learnt to tack and gybe in parallel with the beach until ready to sail independently further out in the marina.

Innovation and volunteer labour was the key to developing the Mudlarks with parents supplying materials including plywood, sails and rigging, member Les Isitt making the hulls and another member, Vic Lawson using caravan awning tracks, cut down and attached to aluminium poles to make the spars.

A number of club trophies were introduced during this period, including the Diamond Island Trophy for a race up to Diamond Island in Moore River, the Sunflower Boutique Trophy for Mudlarks and the Flying Ants Championship Trophy.

In the mid or late 1990’s, the club acquired its 1st 420 class dinghy and in 2005, by then with several 420’s in the club fleet, Ray Knapp and John Chapman organised a formal junior dinghy sailing course. Four juniors completed that first course and a number of further courses were held under the tutelage of Ray and John, and later, instructor John Bell.

In the early 2000’s, the club obtained a Mirror class dinghy, one of most popular dinghy classes worldwide. The WA Mirror Association ran several events from Two Rocks as part of their Travellers Championship and continued to provide support to SCYC in terms of instruction and advice and the donation of several boats; Black Magic was donated by WA Mirror Association stalwart Mark Pitt and the Mirror Association donated another boat in 2010, both boats still with the club in 2020. Mirrors were common amongst the other dinghies racing in the marina, and in the Spot Race, from 2010 up till the present and members have represented the club at Mirror state titles a number of times in the last decade.

In 2011, Commodore Ann Santry negotiated the donation of 9 Reacher class fibreglass training dinghies from East Fremantle Dinghy Sailing Club. These dinghies had for many years been the mainstay of junior dinghy sail training at East Fremantle and were now to provide that role at Sun City. The generous donation by EFSC was a stepping stone for the yacht club to expand into Australian Sailing sanctioned Start Sailing courses and from 2014, several club members completed the courses required to qualify as dinghy sailing instructors. A Start Sailing course was run in 2014 at Sun City with the support of Ian Conboy from Hillarys Yacht Club and Start Sailing courses have been provided by SCYC instructors since 2017.

For many years, small aluminium dinghies with 10 to 18HP outboard motors provided support for the sailing dinghies. While wonderful within the marina, these small ‘tinnies’ were only safe outside

the marina in very mild conditions and the club had for a number of years looked jealously at the Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIB’s) utilised as support and rescue boats by other clubs but could not afford the generally significant expense to purchase one. A chance meeting between former Commodore Wayne Hartas and Yachting WA Presidente Rob Rooke led to the heavily subsidised purchase in 2019 of a RIB from Australian Sailing and that quickly led to new opportunities and more frequency of dinghy sailing outside the marina.

2019 was a busy year for the club in terms of new boats and later that year, SCYC acquired four Pacer class sailing dinghies, together with two Laser class dinghies, on very generous terms from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club – the Pacers are one of the most popular training dinghies in Australia and particularly suited to adults where the Reachers are better suited to the smaller juniors. This allowed the club to better provide for both junior and adult dinghy sail training, including several ‘She Sails’ course run by club instructor Mariska Van De Capelle.

Whilst dinghy sail training became a mainstay of club activities from 2014, dinghy racing within the marina continued with occasional forays beyond the marina, including the reintroduction of the Spot Race in 2017 after a hiatus of 40 years. This race takes dinghies from a start inside the marina to a mark 2 nautical miles south, opposite the popular surfing location known as The Spot, and back to a finish inside the marina.

As the marina filled with new pens in 2020, and with the support of the club RIB, the club has taken the opportunity to race outside the marina more frequently, perhaps in keeping with earlier years in the club’s history.
