Rome Pre-Tour June 20-23, 2020

(As of 6/19/19) Day 1: Saturday, June 20, 2020: DEPARTURE FOR ITALY

• We depart the United States on our overnight flight to Italy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day 2: Sunday, June 21, 2020: WELCOME TO ROME!

• We arrive in Rome and are met by an Ayelet Tours representative. • We transfer to our hotels to check in and refresh. • This afternoon, we enjoy a city bus tour, including Palatine Hill, Piazza del Popolo and Castel

Sant’Angelo with a few stops for photo opportunities. Lunch stop (on own) along the way. • We return to our hotels with time to refresh before our evening program. • We enjoy an evening at leisure and dinner on own.

Overnight in Rome ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day 3: Monday, June 22, 2020: NAPLES & POMPEI

• Breakfast at our hotels. • Early this morning, we depart for Naples, founded by Greek settlers in 470 B.C.E. Today, Naples

has retained the imprint of the successive cultures that emerged in Europe and the Mediterranean basin. This makes it a unique site, with a wealth of outstanding monuments such as the Church of Santa Chiara, the Castel dell’Ovo and Maschio Angoino. We enjoy an amazing tour in this wonderful city!

• After time for lunch on own at one of the many restaurants or pizzerias, we proceed to Pompei for a tour of the ruins. Pompei is one of the most significant proofs of advanced Roman civilization and, like an open book, provides outstanding information on the art, customs, trades and everyday life of the past. The city has re-emerged from the darkness of centuries precisely as it would have been when it was unexpectedly buried in a thick layer of ash and lava which poured down from the devastating eruption of Vesuvius in 79 C.E. The scale of the tragedy was enormous - in what had been one of the most active and splendid Roman centers, life came to a permanent standstill.

• We return to Rome for an evening at leisure to wander the streets of Rome and have dinner on own. Overnight in Rome

• Breakfast at our hotels. • Today, we travel to Tivoli, located on Monti Tiburtini (Tubirtine Hills). Tivoli was founded in

1215 B.C.E. in the province of Rome. The poet Virgil called it Tibur Superbum, a name that can still be found in the city’s coat of arms. Tivoli, in addition to being known for its Sulphur mineral springs used since ancient times, is best known for its two villas on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites; Hadrian’s Villa (Villa Adriana) and Villa d’Este.

• Lunch on own. • This afternoon, we visit the reform Jewish community in Rome for a discussion of liberal

Judaism in the region. • Later this afternoon, we join the main CA Italy tour for a welcome ceremony at the Great

Synagogue.
