    1. Jinn Resembling Snake

Once, Ghau-e-Aam was busy delivering a speechin an Ijtim at his Madrasa when a big snake fell onto himfrom the ceiling. The audience got into a panic and stampededbut Ghau-e-Aam did not even move from his

place. The snake wrapped itself around his blessed body underhis clothes.

The snake then came out of his collar and wrapped itselfaround his blessed neck but our Murshid, the spiritual king of

Baghdad, his honour, Shaykh Abd-ul-Qdir Jln neither became frightened nor discontinued his speech. Thesnake then jumped onto to the ground, stood on its tail, utteredsomething and went away. After the snake disappeared, peoplegathered around Ghau-e-Aam and asked as towhat it said to him. He replied that the snake said

that it had tested a lot of friends of All but it had notfound anyone as steadfast as him. (Bajat-ul-Asrr, p. 168)

Dear Islamic brothers! It came out that the snake was, in fact, aJinn that had come to test our Ghau-e-Aam whoremained steadfast by the grace of Allah .

    2. A Big-EyedMan

Read another account of the same snake and admire thesteadfastness of Ghau-e-Aam . Ghau-e-Aam says that once he was busy offeringal at Jmi Masjid Manr when the same snake came andplaced its opened mouth at the place where he wasto perform Sajda. Pushing the snake away, he

managed to perform Sajda but it wrapped itself around hisneck. It then went under a sleeve of him and came out from

the other. When he finished the al, the snakehad disappeared.

The next day, he went to the same Masjid where he saw a big-eyed man. He realized that theman was not a human but a Jinn. The Jinn then told Ghau-e-Aam that he was the same snake that had botheredhim. The Jinn goes onto say that he, in the form of a snake,

tested a lot of friends of All but none of them was assteadfast as our Ghau-e-Aam . Having said this, the Jinn repented of misdeeds in the blessed court of Ghau-e-Aam .(Bajat-ul-Asrr, p. 169)

Dear Islamic brothers! How diligently our Ghau-e-Aam would offer his al! On the other hand, we are soheedless that if even a fly settles on our body while we areoffering al, we lose our concentration. We cant even bearan itch. The foregoing parable also shows that even jinns are

the devotees of our Ghau-e-Aam .

    3. Satans Dangerous Attack

Ghau-e-Aam says, Once I went to a junglewhere I stayed for many days without eating and drinking. I

had become very thirsty. Suddenly, above my head, a cloudappeared from which raindrops started falling which I drank. A

bright face then appeared in the cloud, illuminating the sky. Iheard a voice saying, O Abd-ul-Qdir! I am your Creator and

I have made all arm things all for you. Ghau-e-Aam goes onto say, I recited ,turning the brightness of the cloud into smoke. Then I heard a

voice, O Abd-ul-Qdir! Before this, I led seventy saints ofAll astray but your knowledge has saved you. Ghau-e-Aam says, I replied, O the accursed one, it is not

my knowledge, it is the grace of my Allah that has savedme.(Bajat-ul-Asrr, p. 228)

ThiefComes Where He Sees WealthDear Islamic brothers! No doubt Satan is very cunning and

tricky. He tries his best to trick us even by magic. Therefore,we should always be aware of his attack. We should not rely onour wisdom and intellect; instead, we should implore All

to help and save us from the tricks of Satan.

    Remember! The thief steals from the person who has wealth;

similarly, if someone has the wealth of mn, Satan willdefinitely try hard to snatch his mn. Further, if a person hasstrong faith and performs good deeds in abundance, Satan willalso make every possible effort to lead him astray. As ourMurshid Ghau-e-Aam had very strong faith aswell as a huge treasure of good deeds, Satan tried to trick himmany times but he failed each time by the grace and mercy ofAll .

    4. More Tricks of Satan

Advising his disciples and devotees, Ghau-e-Aam ShaykhAbd-ul-Qdir Jln says: During the days when Iused to stay in jungle, frightening-faced troops of Satan, equipped with different dangerous weapons, would attack me.They would throw flames of fire at me. With the help of All

when I ran after them they would disperse. Sometimes,Satan would come alone and try to threaten and frighten meinto going elsewhere but I would slap him, making him go

away. I would then read so hewould burn. (Bajat-ul-Asrr, p. 165)

    5. Hand from Ghayb (Unseen)

Ghau-e-Aam says, Once a foul-smelling andextremely horrifying-faced person came and stood in front ofme. He then said, I am Satan and I have come to serve youbecause you have exhausted me and my followers. Ghau-e-Aam says, I asked him to go away but he refused.Suddenly, a hand from Ghayb (unseen) appeared and struck

such a blow on the head of Satan that he sank into the ground, but he still managed to attack me with a flame of fire.Meanwhile, a horse-man with his face covered came andhanded me a sword. Seeing this, Satan ran away. (Bajat-ul- Asrr,

    6. Traps of Satan

Ghau-e-Aam says, Once I saw Satan sitting afarand throwing dust onto his head. Satan then said crying, O

Abd-ul-Qdir! I am disappointed to have failed to lead youastray. I replied, O the accursed one, shove off! I can never beheedless of you. Satan said, This mindset of yours is the mosttroublesome for me. He then revealed to me many traps andtricks. I asked him about them, he replied that those were theworldly traps whereby he hunts people like me. In order to besafe from them, I kept striving for a whole year until all thetraps broke. Then lots of things appeared to me. I asked as towhat those things were, I was told that those were the thingswhich cause heedlessness. I then strived for another year untilall those traps also broke.(Bajat-ul-Asrr, p. 166)

    Keep Trying to Rectify Yourself

Dear Islamic brothers! Indeed it is very difficult to subdue Nafsand Satan. Our Ghau-e-Aam had to struggle hardfor many years so as to subdue Satan. Here, there is a great

lesson for those who give up hope and utter such disappointingsentences as I have made many efforts staying in the companyof Prophets devotees in the Madan environment, I travelledwith Madan Qfila as well, but I could not yet overcomeNafs and Satan. Such Islamic brothers and everyone elseshould keep struggling hard throughout their life for their

rectification seeking help from Allah .

    7. Ghusl for Forty Times in One Night

It is stated in Bajat-ul-Asrr that Shaykh Abd-ul-Qdir Jln says, , I spent many years in the junglesof Karkh. I used to survive on tree leaves and herbs. Every year,a person used to come and give me a wool gown to wear. Inorder to get rid of the love of the world, I endured manyhardships. I remained anonymous; people would consider medumb, unwise and insane due to my silence. I used to walk onthorns barefoot, enter terrible caves and horrific valleys withoutany fear. The world used to appear to me in a beautiful form,

but , I never turned my attention towards it. MyNafs used to plead to me that it would obey whatever I likedand sometimes it used to argue with me. Allah gave me

    victory over it.

For a long time, I stayed on the plains of Madyan and keptbattling against my Nafs. For one year, I consumed the thingslying on the ground and did not drink water. For the otheryear, I drank only water and did not eat anything. Then forone year, I neither ate nor drank anything. I would encounter

extreme hardships. One night, I was tested in extremely coldweather, I would repeatedly fall asleep and Ghusl becameobligatory on me (due to nocturnal emission). I wouldimmediately go to the river and make Ghusl over there. Onthat night alone, I had to make Ghusl forty times (in icy coldwater). (Bajat-ul-Asrr, pp. 164-165)

    Hardship Turns into Ease

Quoting Shaykh Abd-ul-Qdir Jln , AllmaImm Sharn writes in the bookabqt-ul-Kubr,

At the beginning, I faced many hardships; when these hardshipsreached their peak, I lay on the ground and kept reciting verses5 and 6 of Sra Alam Nashra which are as follows:

So, without doubt, there is ease with hardship. Without doubt,

    there is ease with hardship.

(Pra 30, Sra Alam Nashra, Ayah 5, 6) (Kanzul mn [Translation of

    Quran])

By the blessing of these verses of the Holy Qurn, all thosedifficulties were removed. (abqt-ul-Kubr, pp. 178, vol. 1)

    We ShouldAlso Try

Dear Islamic brothers! Surely, one has to make sacrifices toachieve something. Our own Shaykh Abd-ul-Qdir Jln also made many sacrifices and struggled hard in

order to attain the closeness of Allah and pleasure of HisProphet , overcome his Nafs and Satan, remainsafe from sins and distant from the love of the world, enjoingood and gain many rewards by preaching and thus bringingcountless disbelievers into the fold of Islam.

Although we cannot bear as many hardships as our Ghau Pk did, we can at least make a little effort without

    giving up hope.

    8. 25Years in the JungleO those who have utmost devotion for Shaykh Abd-ul-QdirJln ! He spent twenty-five years in the

jungles of Iraq enduring extreme hunger and thirst to gain thepleasure of Allah . If only we also travel with the MadanQfilas of Dawat-e-Islami to propagate the Islamic teachingsand Sunna of the Holy Prophet throughoutthe world!

    9. Picking Bits of Food from the Floorand

    Eating Them

The king of Baghdad, Shaykh Abd-ul-Qdir Jln stated: I would intend to pick up the fallen things, leaves andgrass to eat, but I would leave them making self-sacrifice forothers who would also be in search of those things. I would

remain hungry. When I became extremely weak and was closeto death, I found something lying on the floor near the flowermarket and picked it up. I sat at a corner to eat it. Suddenly, Isaw a non-Arab youngster who had fresh bread and roastedmeat, he sat and began to eat. When I saw him eating, mydesire for food intensified. When he would take the morsel in

his hand to eat, I would spontaneously open my mouth so thathe may put the morsel into my mouth.

However, I rebuked my Nafs and asked it to be patient as Allah is with me. I clarified to my Nafs that I would never ask

the young man for anything to eat. All of a sudden, turningtowards me, the youngster said, Brother! Please come and joinme in this meal. I refused but he insisted. My Nafs also insistedthat I eat but I kept advising it to have patience. However, I atea little due to the insistence of the young man. He then askedme, Where are you from? I told him that I was from Jln. He

said that he was also from Jln. He further asked me if I knew(Shaykh) Abd-ul-Qdir , the grandson of thefamous ascetic saint (Wal) of Allah , Sayyid AbdullaSawma . I replied that I was the same person.Listening to this, he became a little anxious and said, When Iwas leaving for Baghdad, your mother gave me eight gold

coins to give to you. Having reached Baghdad, I kept lookingfor you but no one gave me your whereabouts until all mymoney was spent. I have been hungry for three days. When Ibecame helpless due to extreme hunger, I bought some breadand this roasted meat with some of your money.

He then said, Your honour! Please eat this food withouthesitation because you are its owner. Previously, you were myguest, now I am your guest. Giving me the remaining moneyhe said, I apologize to you, I bought this food in the state ofhelplessness due to extreme hunger. (Shaykh says) I became

very happy when I heard this. I then gave him the remainingfood and money; he accepted and left. (Tabqt-e-Hanbilah, pp.250, vol. 3)

    Great Excellence of Self-Sacrifice

Dear Islamic brothers! The foregoing parable containsinnumerable Madan pearls for us. On the one hand, ourbeloved Ghau-e-Aam set an excellent example ofself-sacrifice by giving food and money to the young man evenin the state of extreme starvation and poverty, on the other, there are we, the so-called devotees of Ghau-e-Aam. Ourcondition is that even if we eat the meal of the Niyz ofGiyrwn, we miss no opportunity to gobble food voraciously, depriving others of their share.

O admirers and devotees of Ghau-e-Aam! Whenever yourNafs tries to make you devour food in big morsels withoutchewing them properly while eating with others, recall the

foregoing parable of Ghau-e-Aam as well as thefollowing ad of the Holy Prophet ,Whoever gives the thing that he needs for himself to any otherperson, Allah will forgive him. (Itaf-us-Sdat-il-Muttaqn) Itis stated in Faizn-e-Sunnat, vol. 1, page 482 that Shaykh AbSulaymn says, To refrain from satisfying any

desire of Nafs is more beneficial to heart than even fasting fortwelve months and worshipping at night.10. A Strange Way of Staying Awake

Advising his disciples and devotees, Ghau-e-Aam

says, I spent 25 years of my life in the jungles ofIraq. I managed to offer Isha and Fajr al with the same

Wu for 40 years. Similarly, I kept the routine of reciting thewhole Qurn, for 15 years, in Nafl al after Isha. At the

beginning, I would fasten a rope around my waist and tie theother end of the rope to a hook in the wall so that I would notfall asleep. (Bajat-ul- Asrr, pp. 118)

One night, when I intended to perform my usual worship, myNafs suggested that I take a little rest first and perform worship

afterwards. At the very same moment and place where thisthought occurred to me, I recited the whole Quran standingon one leg. (Bajat -tul-Qdiriyya)

O devotees of Ghau-e-Aam! Did you see how abundantlyour Ghau-e-Aam would perform worship! All

forbid, if we are lazy in offering even five times dailyal, how can we be able to justify our claim of being devoteesof his?

    11. Help of a Person in the Grave

    On Wednesday 27th ul-ijja, 529 A.H., Shaykh Abd-ul-Qdir

Jln along with a Qfila of Islamic scholars andpious men visited the grave of his honourable teacher Shaykhammd in the Shniziya cemetery. Ghau-e-Aam kept making supplication at the grave for along while. As he returned, his face showed signs ofdelight. He was asked as to why he made supplication

for so long. He replied, On Friday, 15th

Shabn 499A.H., I and my respected teacher Shaykh ammd

who is resting in this grave were on our way to Jmi-ur-Rufa with a Qfila to offer al-tul-Jumua. On the way,

while crossing a bridge, Shaykh ammd suddenlypushed me, causing me to fall into a canal. It was very cold but

I recited and made the intention for Friday bath. Havingperformed bath, I came out, squeezed the water from mywoollen robe and joined the Qfila.

The disciples of Shaykh ammd began to laugh, but he rebuked them saying, I did so just to test

Abd-ul-Qdir and I found him as strong as a rock. Ghau-e-Aam goes onto say, While supplicating, I saw myrespected teacher Shaykh ammd , in his grave, dressed in clothes embroidered with diamonds with a rubiescrown on his head, golden bracelets around his hands andgolden shoes in his feet, but the odd thing was that his righthand was not moving. I asked him the reason for it, he replied,This is the hand whereby I shoved you, causing you to fall intothe canal. Will you forgive me? I forgave him. He then said,Please make supplication to All so that He enables me to use my right hand. I prayed to All and

five thousand saints of All said from inside theirgraves. By the grace of All he became able to use hisright hand. He then shook hands with me out of happiness.

This news spread throughout Baghdad. Listening to it, thedisciples of Shaykh ammd were somewhat

offended and made their way to the court of Ghau-e-Aam to enquire about it, but no one had the courage to

do so. Ghau-e-Aam got to know about theirinner state and said, Choose two Shuykh for the solution to

    this problem.

The disciples of Shaykh ammd chose ShaykhYsuf amdn and Shaykh Abd-ur-Ramn Kurd who had spiritual insight and gave Ghau-e-Aam two days respite that both the chosen Shuykh should express

their approval for what Ghau-e-Aam had said within twodays. Ghau-e-Aam said, this problemwill be solved even before you leave.

Ghau-e-Aam then lowered his blessed head.Seeing this, all others present over there also lowered theirheads. Suddenly, Shaykh Ysuf amdn

    entered

barefoot and said, With Alls command, I have justseen Shaykh ammd who asked me to go to theMadrasa of Abd-ul-Qdir Jln and declare whatShaykh Abd-ul-Qdir Jln has said about him(Shaykhammd) is true. Meanwhile, Shaykh Abd-ur-RamnKurd also arrived and said the same. Upon hearing

    this, the disciples of Shaykh ammd apologized toGhau-e-Aam . (Bajat-ul-Asrr, p. 107)

Dear Islamic brothers! The foregoing faith-refreshing parablecontains many words of wisdom for us. If our Islamic teacheror Murshid ever carries out any such act whose logic we could

not comprehend we should not object to it as it may result inloss for our Hereafter. Instead, we should stick to patience, as

    15

our Ghau-e-Aam set an excellent example ofpatience when his respected teacher Shaykh ammd

pushed him, causing him to fall into the canal. He made theintention of Ghusl for Jumua and did not utter even a wordof complaint.

Objecting to Ones Murshid Leads to Ruin

Undoubtedly, the Islamic student and the disciple objecting tohis Islamic teacher and Murshid remain deprived of the blessingsof knowledge and gnosis and fall into the abyss of ruin.

Al arat, Imm of Al-e-Sunnat, Reviver of Sunna,Eradicator of Bida, Scholar of Shara, Guide of Tarqa,Allma, Mauln, Al-j Al-fi, Al-Qr Ash-Sh ImmAmad Raz Khn narrates: A disciple must notobject to his Murshid as this is a deadly poison for him. Therewould hardly be any disciple that manages to attain salvationin spite of objecting to his Murshid. If he ever fails to

comprehend the wisdom of any act on the part of his Murshid,he should recall the events of Sayyidun Khir as he did such acts that apparently seemed to be highlyobjectionable (like damaging the ship of a destitute person andkilling an innocent baby).

However, when he justified his acts, it would becomeclear what he did was right. Likewise, the disciple should have

    16

a firm belief that his Murshid has an irrefutable proof for thepermissibility of the act that does not seem to be right to the

disciple. Sayyidun Imm Abul Qsim Qushayr writes in the booklet Risla-e-Qushairiya that he heard Sayyidun Abu Abd-ur-Ramn Sulam say,His (Abu Abd-ur-Ramn Sulams) Murshid, Ab SaalSalk said to him, Anyone who says why in anymatter to his Murshid will never be able to attain salvation.

    Perfectand Imperfect Murshid

Dear Islamic brothers! The foregoing blessed Fatwa of Alarat appertains to only a perfect Murshid. As forthe so-called Murshid who is not only a blasphemer of the

Holy Prophet and his companions but also an apostate and areligious bigot, it is impermissible and sin to become a discipleof such a person.

Similarly, the person committing major sins with impunity orcommitting minor sins repeatedly is Fsiq-e-Mulin (open

sinner). For instance, the one committing such sins as missingal openly, taking drugs, abusing, meeting and talking withunveiled women freely, allowing women to kiss or press hishands or feet, watching films and dramas openly, shaving hisbeard or trimming it less than a fist-length such a person isan absolute open sinner and, thus it is not permissible at all tobecome his disciple. One should be careful and cautious beforebecoming disciple.

Therefore, it is stated on page 278 of the first volume of Bar-e-Sharat, a masterpiece ofadr-ush-Shara, Badr-ut-arqa,

Allma Mauln Mufti Muhammad Amjad Al Aam , There are four preconditions for a Murshid (spiritualguide). These preconditions must be fulfilled before Baat:

    1. The Murshid must be a Sunni Muslim with correct Islamicbeliefs.

    2. He must have so much Islamic knowledge that he canfind out necessary rulings from books.

    3. He must not be a Fsiq-e-Mulin (an open sinner).4. His spiritual order must be connected with the Holy

    Prophet . (Bar-e-Sharat, Fatw-e-Razaviyya,

    pp. 603, vol. 21)

If a Murshid fails to fulfil even a single of the foregoing fourpreconditions, it is not permissible to become his disciple. Ifsomeone unknowingly became a disciple of such a Murshidwho is not of the above-mentioned calibre, it is mandatory for

the disciple to break his Baat (i.e. no longer remain thedisciple of such a person). For this, he does not have to informthat imperfect Murshid. Instead, just saying that he has brokenhis Baat is enough.

Further, losing belief in ones Murshid automatically leads to

the termination of Baat. He can now become a disciple of anyperfect Murshid. Furthermore, it is also not necessary to inform

the new perfect Murshid about the termination of previousBaat with so and so person.

ThePerils of Terminating Baat of Perfect Murshid

By Shara and arqa, it is strictly prohibited to break Baatof a perfect Murshid, without a valid Shar reason. In this regard,a number of sayings of saints have been narrated in different

    authentic books.

The reason of its prohibition in Shara is that one should atleast be grateful to the person who has shown benevolence tohim. By virtue of doing Baat with a perfect Murshid, adisciple attains a lot of blessings such as spiritual link with thefriends of Allah

, ease in the path ofarqa and, at times,

occurrence of a complete Madan transformation in life.Breaking Baat instead of being grateful to Murshid in returnfor such great blessings is nothing but an utter ungratefulnessthat is prohibited by Shara. Therefore, a ad says:

The one who has not expressed his gratitude to people, in fact, has

not expressed his gratitude to Allah .

(Jmi Tirmi, pp. 384, vol. 3, ad 1962)

Further, when a person becomes a disciple of a perfect Murshid,he attains many blessings, though sometimes, he may not

observe it. So, when he is attaining blessings, he should let itcontinue as stated in the following ad:

One should stick to the means whereby he gets sustenance.

    (Shuab-ul-mn, pp. 89, vol. 2, ad 1241)

It should also be kept in mind that the termination of theBaat of a perfect Murshid without Shar reason usually leadsthe disciple to committing many sins. For instance, the disciplebreaking his Baat usually looks down upon his formerMurshid, which is an extremelyarm act leading to onesruin.

Similarly, the termination of Baat amounts to deliberatelyhurting ones Murshid, which is also arm. Likewise, thosebreaking Baat indulge in backbiting and having ill opinionabout their former Murshid, opening the door of many othersins. Therefore, it is better and safer to stick to only one courtas it is fruitless to wander hither and thither on the path of

    arqa.

Glad-Tidingsforthe QdirsIt is stated in Bajat-ul-Asrr that Ghau-e-Aam says, I was given an extremely large register in which the

names of my companions and those of my would-be disciplestill the Judgement Day were inscribed. I was then told that

these people have been blessed due to their spiritual link withme. I asked the angel of Hell whether any of my disciples was

in Hell. He replied in the negative. He furthersaid, I swear by the glory and greatness of my Creator !My hand of protection is above my disciple as the sky is abovethe earth. Even if my disciple is not righteous, no matter, by thegrace of Allah , I am righteous. I swear by the glory andgreatness of my Creator ! I will not leave the court of my

Creator unless I make each and every disciple of mineenter the Paradise. (Bajat-ul-Asrr, p. 193)

Ghau-e-Aam further says, Allah haspromised me to make my disciples and friends enter Paradise. Therefore, the one who calls himself a disciple of mine, Iinitiate him into my Spiritual Order and pay attention towardshim. I have made the Munkar and Nakr promise that theywould not frighten my disciples in their graves. (Derived from
