With an estimated 800 to 1,000 year history of cultivation, Koshu is the oldest Japanese grape variety. Nowadays it is also the top variety for Japanese wine, with many types of Koshu wine available. Theseinclude wines made using the sur lie method, wines with citrus notes, fullerand more rounded wine fermented or aged in oak barrels, orange winemade by leaving grape skins and seeds in the juice, sparkling Koshu wine and more. In 2010, the Koshu grape was registered on the list of grape varieties recognized by the International Organization of Vine and Wine(OIV). Following successful promotion efforts in the EU market, the variety is now known all over the world as a wine grape, and elegant Koshu wines with fresh, acidic, umami palates are attracting worldwide attention.

In the Meiji period, Yamanashi, especially the Kyotoh-Yamanashi area, was known as a prominent silk-producingregion. However, when that industry started to decline fromaround the 1960s, many farmers left sericulture and went intofruit growing. The mulberry trees used to feed silkwormsgradually gave way to fruit trees and grapevines as vineyards spread throughout the region.

The Japanese wine industry began in the Meiji period. The first private winemaking company, the Dai-NihonYamanashi Budoshu Gaisha (precursor of ChâteauMercian), was founded in Katsunuma in August 1877. In October of the same year, two young men, MasanariTakano and Ryuken Tsuchiya, were dispatched toFrance with a view to them learning winemakingtechniques. After returning to Japan in May 1879, they started wine production with the local specialty Koshu grapes the following autumn.Although commercial wine production started inKatsunuma, grape growers were already activelymaking wine at home across the region for personalconsumption. During World War II, winemaking cooperatives were set up in individual regions, with growers providing grapes to be made into wine fortheir fellow members to enjoy. Nowadays, with some 60 wineries, the Kyotoh-Yamanashi area is Japan’s top wine-producing region.

Early in the Edo period, a doctor named Tokuhon Kaidevised a revolutionary cultivation method where grapes were hung over bamboo trellises. Similar to the pergola system, the approach—which maximizes airflow to promote the drier conditions that grapes prefer—became the standard method of vine cultivation in Japan. In the mid-Meiji period, after wire shelvingreplaced bamboo, vine trellises became a familiar feature of the picturesque local mountain slopes and plains. This area’s success as a grape producing regionis also due in part to a superior environment for grapecultivation, with a well-drained alluvial delta and a broadtemperature differential between day and night. Afterthe end of the Meiji period, the land was further improved via efforts including flood control measures like piling stones and building dams upstream to prevent the buildupof sediment and curb regular overflowing of the Hikawa River, which runs east to west across the region. These efforts improved drainage in the sandy soils of theriverside fields, enabling the expansion of vineyards.

Known as “Koryu,” at over 100 years old, this is theoldest Koshu grape vine in existence.

Kyotoh-Yamanashi Wine Country has 60 wineries: 36 in Koshu, 12 in Yamanashi, and 12 in Fuefuki.

Many welcome visitors for wine-tasting and tours. Why not take a winery tour and enjoy

A banquet with isshobin wine bottles. Wine bottles are a common offering at Ichinomiya Asama Shrine, where wine is considered a sacred beverage.

Unique wine cultureIn this region, where grape producers have focused on wine for over 100 years, a unique wine culture has developed. Wine became a familiar beverage, from ceremonies to everyday life, sold in 1.8-liter “isshobin” bottles (which are typically used for sake), and sipped from regular teacups. In one significant sacred custom, many local wineries make offerings of their produce to Ichinomiya Asama Shrine in Fuefuki.

With its roots in the Dai-Nihon Yamanashi Budoshu Gaisha, Mercian has a longHistory, and alwaysworks to bring innovationto the Japanesewine industry. Weatherpermitting, you can also enjoy food and wine inthe garden here.

Wineries based in historic properties originally used for raisingsilkworms are unique to Katsunuma. Savor the rare opportunity to enjoy Koshu wine tasting in traditional buildings refurbished in a modern Japanese style.

In 1891, after the Dai-Nihon Yamanashi Budoshu Gaisha was dissolved, RyukenTsuchiya founded Maruki Winery, now Japan’s oldest remaining winery. Sheep are grazed in the vineyardfor no-till farming.

DNA analysis confirms the origins of Koshu grapes as a cross between Asian wild grapes and a European variety that grew naturally in the Caucasus region, and came to China via the Silk Road.

According to a story from the Nara period, while still a novice, a prominent monk named Gyoki saw a vision in a dream of the Yakushi Nyorai (the Healing Buddha) holding a bunch of grapes. Later, when carving a statue of the Yakushi Nyorai to be enshrined at Daizen-ji Temple (located in Katsunuma Koshu), he discovered a grapevine. It is said that grapes were grown initially by monks for medicinal purposes, before the cultivation of Koshu grapes was also taught to local villagers. A second story, from the Kamakura period, tells of a person named Kageyu Amemiya, from the Katsunuma region, who found a peculiar vine not native to the area. He replanted it on his own land and established the vines by improving cultivation methods. That vine is said to be the forerunner of today's "Koshu" grape variety.

The Yakushi Nyorai statue holding grapes at Daizen-ji Temple. It is unveiled once every five years (the next gokaicho [opening of the statue gate] is scheduled for 2023).

1 Masanari Takano (left) and Ryuken Tsuchiya (right) traveled to France to learn about winemaking. 2 At Lumiere, a winery with over 130 years of history, underground stone fermentation tanks, built in 1901 and designated as a tangible cultural property, are still in partial use today.
